The intersection of racism and diet culture

Not only is toxic diet culture a harmful influence on self-esteem, body image, eating, movement, and our relationship with our bodies and food—it also has a long and ugly racist history that lives on today as an oppressive system in our lives.

Diet culture is directly connected to fatphobia, as diet culture values thinness over everything else. And fatphobia has its roots in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. White European colonists labeled Black people as gluttonous, undisciplined, and hypersexual and held that their love of food made them fat. Meanwhile, the colonists considered themselves the superior race because of their "self-control and moderation," which caused them to be thin.

Soon, fatness became associated with racial inferiority and immorality in the United States. And subsequently, body weight and size became a way for people to distinguish between slaves and non-slaves, with a common belief being that fat people didn't deserve to be free. These fatphobic, anti-Black beliefs live on today through weight stigma in a variety of settings and diet culture.

How diet culture and fatphobia uphold White supremacy

The harmful, stigmatizing, and racist roots of fatphobia live on today as people attempt to prove their superiority through their restraint, "discipline," and thinness—a notion that is connected to healthism. Healthism not only views health as a person's individual responsibility, but it also conflates health and morality, viewing those who can control their weight through exercise and eating habits as superior to those who cannot "control" themselves. Not to mention the fact that healthism, diet culture, and fatphobia send the message that thinness equals good health, which is, of course, incorrect.

In today's society, a thin person has much more privilege than a person living in a higher-weight body. And though many people may not explicitly say they value thinness in order to celebrate Whiteness and be the "superior race," because they're not aware of their implicit biases, the messaging is still the same. The "ideal" body is slim, and beauty standards often adhere to historical White beauty norms. People's desire to lose weight or have a thinner waist comes from the racist need for White people to prove themselves superior to Black people.

So, every time we participate in diet culture or exhibit fatphobic attitudes, including toward ourselves, we are upholding White supremacy—not to mention thin privilege.

On the other hand, rejecting diet culture, celebrating bodies of all sizes and shapes, and adopting a Health at Every Size® (HAES®) framework is anti-racist and can help to dismantle detrimental societal beliefs.

Queensland state MP for Bonney Sam O'Connor highlighted the graffiti on social media, describing it as racist and deploring the act of vandalism.

"In a local park and along with a few houses, on the bus stop and on streets, we had swastikas and anarchy symbols, derogatory terms about Pakistani people, some male genitalia drawn on a slide."

Speaking to SBS Urdu, O'Connor said it is disgusting to see such an incident in one of the most culturally diverse parts of the Gold Coast

"For the vast majority of the community, it [multiculturalism] is something we are really proud of, so to see these images, particularly the fact that they were graffiti-ed on Australia Day was absolutely disgusting. I couldn't believe it.

"It wasn't just done by some bored teenagers. It was someone who really was annoyed with migrants and had some racists thoughts that they wanted to spray illegally on a local park.

Gold Coast Deputy Mayor Donna Gates says that there is a need for more policing in the northern Gold Coast areas.

"We are a multicultural community. One-in-four people who live in the Gold Coast was born overseas and none of us accepts that type of behaviour or graffiti.

We just need to see more police on the ground, officers patrolling the area and taking action against these people who are committing crimes in our region."

There have been other incidents of offensive graffiti in Gold Coast involving a local mosque and a school.

Members of the local Pakistani community who were slurred in the graffiti have condemned the act but say such incidents do not affect their commitment to Australia.

"These are isolated events that occur occasionally but the community now does not react to them," says Nabeel Durrani, who runs a social media group designed to assist Pakistanis in becoming a part of the Gold Coast community.

"We have noticed that there are times when someone from overseas who is not able to adapt to local culture or language. There are few people who react negatively or with racist intent to them.

Durrani says overall the Gold Coast is safe and his community is happy being part of the city.

"A majority of Australians appreciate multiculturalism. They like Pakistani culture, our food and even participate in our cultural events.

"The Pakistani community in Gold Coast include highly-skilled professionals such as doctors and engineers. There is also a vast majority of students from Pakistan who study at Griffith University and other institutions.

Deputy Mayor Gates says the city has a zero-tolerance approach to graffiti and continues to see a reduction in graffiti across the city.

"This is due to a range of programs aimed at preventing graffiti - such as rapid removal, design of our public spaces to reduce opportunities for vandalism, working with retailers of paint products and working with police and other government agencies on education and crime prevention."

The graffiti has now been removed by the local council.

A football fan took his own life after he made racist monkey gestures towards a black player at a local derby match, his inquest has heard

Andrew Paul Hewitt, 52, was filmed making the gesture towards Warrington Town player Bohan Dixon after he celebrated his team's opening goal against Chester FC, and was reported to the police.

The inquest heard he then went home after reading comments on social media and hanged himself in Flint, North Wales on December 1.

Mr Hewitt, a lorry driver, left a note which read: 'I f***** up, sorry'.

The incident happened when Liverpool-born Dixon, 35, was celebrating his team's opening goal in front of 900 Chester fans on November 30 after Connor Woods had scored from the penalty spot.

Chester then equalised in the 85th minute to make it 1-1.

Warrington captain Josh Amis had been sent off for violent conduct at his side's Cal.Delivery Stadium.

The coroners court in Ruthin, North Wales, heard his outraged club shared the monkey gesture footage with police and it also sparked outrage after it was seen online.

But hours after the game, the father-of-one was found dead at his home.

His brother Alan Hewitt told the inquest in a written statement: 'During the game a small group of Chester fans were seen making gestures towards a Warrington player.

'This was completely out of character for Andrew. He must have got caught up in the moment.

Chester had said it was 'angry and dismayed at an alleged instance of racism'.

Mr Hewitt said his brother must have gone home, seem the video and the club's statement as well as the heated reaction online.

He added: 'He must have come to the conclusion that he either faced a lengthy ban from football or a custodial sentence.

'He could not face the embarrassment of either outcome.

Mr Hewitt was pronounced home at 1.35am after he hung himself while home alone.

He had taken his son to the game but his partner Hayley Williams had taken the boy to spend the night with her mother.

North Wales coroner John Gittens recorded Mr Hewitt's death as suicide.

He said: 'My condolences to the family. It is a very sad loss in extremely, difficult circumstances.'

He added that Andrew was 'very much loved' and his death 'leaves a big hole' in his family's lives.
