Taxpayer Funding for Muslim Schools Against So-Called Bigots

TWO Adelaide schools are at risk of racist and religious-based attacks, and will receive extra funding for protection. 
 
Burc College at Gilles Plains and the Islamic College of SA in West Croydon have qualified for federal funds that can be spent on security guards, CCTV, security lighting and fencing.

The Islamic College has received hate mail in the past, while the Association of Independent Schools of SA was concerned Burc College could be a target because it is multicultural with a Turkish influence and bigots could mistake it for an Islamic school.

The Federal Government made the announcement as they warn about the heightened threat of terrorist attacks and consider sending more troops to fight Islamic State.

The Federal Government yesterday announced 54 Government, Jewish, Islamic and Independent schools would share $18 million under the ongoing Schools Security Programme.

Another 44 schools applied but missed out on money.

Justice Minister Michael Keenan said yesterday that it had been an election commitment to "continue assistance to schools at risk of attack, harassment or violence caused by racial or religious intolerance".

"This support recognises the unique security circumstances that some schools unfortunately face," he said.

Mr Keenan also emphasised there was "no particular threat" but that "some schools have a higher risk profile and therefore they have higher security needs".

"It would clearly be better that we lived at a time when we don't need to have programs such as this but while we have a heightened security environment, the schools who are assessed at being at higher risk, for whatever reasons, be it the background of their students ... can expect that their Federal Government will join with the state and territory governments to provide the extra security that those school communities need."

AISSA chief executive Carolyn Grantkalns said they suggested those two schools apply for money to better protect their "lovely, Aussie" students.

"We thought any Islamic school could be targeted — and (the Islamic College of SA) has in the past received hate mail," she said.

"Burc College are proudly a Turkish school rather than Islamic but not everyone would make the distinction."

A new Islamic school, Garden College at Parafield Gardens only opened recently so may have missed out on this round of funding.

Opposition justice spokesman David Feeney said Labor had set up the Secure Schools Program for infrastructure including CCTV, fencing, lighting and anti-ramming devices as well as for security guards.

"The Abbott Government's announcement today that they will continue funding under the Secure Schools Program is welcomed," he said.

"Labor will continue to support and advocate for the Secure Schools Program; we believe every school kid deserves to learn in a safe and welcoming environment, and in a safe community."

How about get it through your thick heads that Multiculturalism brings racism! Nobody gave white people a vote on having Muslims or Jews in the community!
