Push for Irish and Polish labour force in Northern Territory

EXPECT to see more Irish in town, and even some Polish, as local businesses search as far as Europe to fill vacant work positions because local workers are difficult to come by. 
 
Vacant positions in the hospitality, trades, and ancillary health sectors have proved so difficult to fill that the Department of Business, the Chamber of Commerce and Motor Trades Association NT have banded together on behalf of local businesses to hunt out European workers.

The Working Abroad expo was held in Dublin, Ireland, last weekend, before moving to Cork and then Warsaw, Poland, this weekend.

Department of Business's director for business and skilled migration, Mary Martin, said Territory businesses struggle to fill their vacancies through advertising to local or national workers.

"Ireland and the UK have long been a key source for skilled professionals and trade workers to the Territory," Ms Martin said.

"Most recent statistics show they are key source countries for skilled migrants and ­temporary skilled workers for the NT."

It's the first time an expo like this has been held in ­Poland.

"Poland in fact, is the biggest source of tradespeople within Europe," Ms Martin said.

"Working Abroad expo is about engaging with potential skilled people from key countries that have similar working conditions, the right trades and skillets and who are interested in living and working in the NT."

Ms Martin said most Europeans only consider Sydney, Melbourne or possibly the Gold Coast to live and work, and the expo was a chance to highlight the Territory.

"(This) enables us to focus attention on the Northern Territory to many people who are actively considering an international work experience, and what the Territory has to offer as a work and lifestyle destination," she said.
