Excerpt: Three-and-a-half hours' drive south of Alice Springs on a dirt road off the Stuart Highway a hand-painted sign on a car bonnet warns: 'No visitors, No travel'.

This is the entry to what is known as the APY Lands, a vast Indigenous enclave in the far north-west of South Australia where no outsider can enter without a permit.

Below and to the east and west are 103,000 square kilometres of country wholly owned by the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (pronounced arn-ahng-oo pit-jan-jah-jarra yan-kun-ja-jarra) who have lived here for tens of thousands of years.

A permit requires approval from the Lands' governing body, known as APY, and to enter without one risks an initial $2,000 fine with a $500 penalty for every unauthorised day.

It is an offence to gamble or to possess, consume or supply alcohol anywhere on APY Lands, with the threat of jail.

Alcohol, mostly cask wine and spirits, still gets in - mostly from Coober Pedy, Marla and Alice Springs - with a 400 per cent mark-up on retail prices. A single can of VB can sell for $10.

The APY Lands occupies about 10 per cent of South Australia - more territory than almost half the countries in the world.

At the last Census, just 2,333 people - 2,048 of them Indigenous - were spread across this ancient landscape. Pitjantjatjara is by far the most dominant language, with just 3.8 per cent of the population speaking only English at home.

[The Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara people of the central desert refer to themselves as Anangu, much like Koori or Murri means an Aboriginal person in the eastern states].

Every three years each of the seven communities elects a man and a woman to represent them on the APY Board which appoints a general manager who is approved by the South Australian Minister for Aboriginal Affairs.

In one town - much like all Aboriginal towns - the youth centre which once offered discos and movie nights is a roofless wreck.

Camp dogs roam the streets, which don't have lighting at night, as young men work on stolen cars that would not be registered in any city and barefoot children kick footballs through the dust.

The median weekly personal income on APY Lands is $296 and median weekly rent for a corrugated steel house is $90.

Most dwellings were built this century and according to one white worker who has conducted maintenance on the buildings their occupants 'are extremely hard on them'.

'They're the best built houses in Australia,' he says. 'They're basically indestructible unless you torch them.'

No one has much interest in the Voice to Parliament.

Token gestures of reconciliation have little place among Anangu, many of whom are just as likely to call Uluru by its former name, Ayers Rock. 'Doesn't matter,' Fraser says.

Nothing much happens in Pukatja before 9am when the roadhouse opens. It closes at midday and reopens at 2pm because that's what's always been done. 

Pukatja Roadhouse sells frozen kangaroo tail for $11 a kilo sourced out of Adelaide, 1,400km away, because the all the local 'roos have been exterminated.

Fixing broken vehicles is something of an obsession on APY Lands, born of necessity and the only visible recycling that goes on. Each community has its own car dump which is raided for spare parts.

Government contractors sign agreements not to speak publicly but one tells Daily Mail Australia vast amounts of money are being wasted on the Lands.

'The government will come out and make some announcement, kiss the babies and shake hands, then six months later withdraw the funding,' a White contractor says.

'It doesn't matter how much money they're going to throw it it, it's not going to change anything.'

'These people are very proud,' he says. 'They stick to their ways. They get sick of white people interfering. And I don't blame them.

Another White service provider picks the biggest problem on the APY Lands as a lack of jobs, followed by little accountability about where government money was spent.

'The problem is a lot of the money doesn't get into the communities,' he says. 'A lot more could be done for them on the budgets I've seen over 20 years.'

The service provider is not complaining about his own circumstances. A couple working on government projects out here can earn $170,000 a year, with free accommodation and no power or water bills.

'If you do a job like this for ten years you could by a house,' he says. 'It's a great lifestyle.'

But the service provider has also witnessed senseless violence among Anangu, including a wife bashing her husband with a steel bar and a man attacking his brother with a wheel brace.

'It's family violence that gets out of control,' he says. 'We call the police and nothing happens. Sometimes they don't even pick up.'

The service provider has had his backyard broken into by kids just to steal an ashtray filled with cigarette butts.

Closed Community - No White Visitors

It was created more than 40 years ago and inflamed the land rights debate in Australia. Red Over Black, a book and documentary released in the early 1980s, claimed the movement was a communist plot to erode Australia's sovereignty

Now, the film is being used as a clarion call by anti-Voice to Parliament campaigners in the referendum to be held on October 14.

ABC Investigations has tracked how the hour-long documentary was repurposed, revealing Australian white supremacists played a major role in its appropriation and dissemination.

The documentary has been circulated among groups promoting Saturday's rallies against the Voice around the country.

Leading far-right and conspiracy theory researcher Kaz Ross described it as a "deliberate infiltration strategy" of the anti-Voice campaign by sections of the far right.

'Communism by the back door'

The ABC has analysed dozens of Telegram channels and Facebook groups showing mentions of Red Over Black — created by former Communist Party member turned right-wing activist Geoff McDonald — dating back to August last year.

During the first re-shares of his documentary, there was no mention of the Voice to Parliament.

But then on January 30, the anti-Semitic website XYZ —  founded by white supremacist David Hiscox —  linked McDonald's work to the proposed Voice and described it as "communism by the back door".

Two days later, a new telegram channel, Aboriginal Voice Exposed (AVE) was created. It would go on to become one of the most shared anti-Indigenous and anti-Voice to Parliament spaces on Telegram.

Its very first post was a link to McDonald's documentary, which it claimed "exposes the Communist and New World Order agenda behind Aboriginal activism and the so-called Aboriginal Voice To Parliament".


Five days later, the site shared the video again.

"Geoff McDonald is an ex-Communist who blows the whistle on the history behind the Aboriginal rights movement," the post stated.

"And this extends through to the modern Constitutional Voice to Parliament in 2023 under the Albanese Government."

The channel regularly posts anti-Indigenous and anti-Semitic content directly from the XYZ website and also neo-Nazi figure Blair Cottrell.

AVE's posts were also shared by neo-Nazi Thomas Sewell, who earlier this year avoided jail for bashing a black Melbourne security guard.

Around this time, the Red Over Black documentary also began circulating in freedom and anti-lockdown groups, many of which have been promoting Saturday's unofficial anti-Voice rallies.

Dr Ross, who has been closely monitoring these channels, said AVE appeared to be collaborating with other anti-Semitic groups to push the case for a No vote.

She said the freedom groups initially did not have a position on the Voice, but that has since changed.

"They were quite influenced by those Aboriginal sovereign citizens in Canberra and they thought, 'Well, this is good, right? This is giving Aboriginals a voice,'" she said.

"And then over time, they were really bombarded ... new material started coming up through a number of hideously racist Telegram channels."

Video creator unmasked

In late July, four months after it was first published in far-right channels, the Red Over Black documentary was adapted to specifically attack the Voice.

Key parts were incorporated into a new documentary which promised to expose "the secret communist plot" behind the Voice. It was posted by a mysterious YouTube channel called Blacklisted Research.

The new documentary contained false and racist claims about Jews and communists and was widely shared on social media.

A copy of the Blacklisted Research's video was shared more than 4,400 times on Facebook.

Since it was posted on Facebook on July 23, it has been shared almost twice as many times as any post by the official Yes23 campaign. It has outperformed most official Vote No material, including that of senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price and No-vote advocate Warren Mundine, and most of One Nation leader Pauline Hanson's Facebook posts.

ABC Investigations has established the owner of Blacklisted Research is Queensland man Daniel Walker, who has an extensive history of sharing anti-Semitic materials.

In one video he posted last year on a neo-Nazi video-sharing platform, which the ABC has chosen not to name, Mr Walker included a photoshopped image of himself having a barbecue outside the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Mr Walker is then seen telling an Israeli man on Omegle — where participants are randomly matched for video chats — that he hated Jewish people.

ABC Investigations also identified Mr Walker as the administrator for the Blacklisted Research Telegram channel, where some of its subscribers discuss strategies on how to sell a No vote.

When ABC Investigations approached Mr Walker over Instagram he denied he had ever produced videos and blocked the ABC. He later posted about that interaction and other approaches made by the ABC on the Blacklisted Research Telegram channel.

He did not respond to further inquiries.

'They don't even know they've been manipulated'

The claim that the Voice is a Communist plot has become a clarion call for the anti-Voice campaigners, despite similar claims being debunked for decades.

In 1983 when McDonald published his fifth edition of the book Red Over Black, subsequent claims of Communist infiltration through First Nations organisations were rubbished.

Yawuru man Pat Dodson, then a land rights advocate before being elected as a Labor senator, rejected McDonald's accusation of Indigenous collusion with communists.
"The Communist Party doesn't have influence at all," Mr Dodson said.

"In fact, we've been quite vigilant about resisting any kind of overtures from the Communist Party to either allow them to participate in our meetings to present their ideological platforms, as we've been in regards to every other party."

Today, communists in Australia are split on the Voice. The Australian Communist Party has directed its members to Vote No, while members of the Communist Party of Australia were seen last weekend walking in support of the Yes campaign,

Saturday's rallies against the Voice were originally promoted as "freedom" protests, without an overt focus on the referendum.

Asked about his current position on treaties and native title claims, Mr Mundine said: 'Do you know today that 55 per cent of Australia's land mass has been given back to Aboriginals?

'Over the next 10-15 years, it's going to be nearly up to 70 per cent to 80 per cent of Australia's land mass will be going back to Aboriginal people.

'So that's through the acknowledgement that we took this land and we put legislation in place that would return land back to Aboriginal people.'

Mr Mundine described the Uluru Statement from the Heart - which called for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament - as a 'symbolic declaration of war against modern Australia'.

Indigenous senator Lidia Thorpe has lashed out at the Voice referendum after being sent a "disgusting" video shows an apparent neo-Nazi burning the Aboriginal flag and threatening her.

In the video, a man in a balaclava who claims to be from neo-Nazi group Warriors for Convict Resistance reads a statement from his phone endorsing "white Australia".

He then makes racist statements about First Nations people before burning the flag and performing a Nazi salute.

The Australian Federal Police were made aware of the video on Tuesday when it was posted to X, formerly known as Twitter.

It has since been taken down and the account that posted it has been de-activated. The federal police are continuing to investigate.

On Thursday, Thorpe hit back, blaming the campaign on the Indigenous Voice referendum for increased abuse directed towards her.

"The referendum is an act of genocide against my people. And the Prime Minister knows exactly what he's doing," she said.

Thorpe – a former Greens senator from Victoria and a prominent campaigner for a No vote on the Voice – was surrounded by supporters while she made her statement.

She also accused Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the federal police of doing too little to protect her.

"His (Albanese's) violent force that he has sent to protect me can't even protect me, refuse to protect the black sovereign woman because the police are part of the problem in this country," she said.

"You want to paint me as an angry black woman, well you are about to see an angry black woman.
