DARWIN'S "long grasser" (Boong)population has swollen because itinerant drunks are leaving towns with tougher alcohol restrictions.

Police say Temporary Beat Locations – which they enforce in Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Katherine – have been so successful frustrated drinkers have turned towards Darwin because they think it's an easier place to buy grog.

Police have responded by saying they will throw more police into the fight against drunken itinerants in Darwin.

During the Wet, the number of people sleeping rough in the long grass usually increases as floodwaters prevent them returning to remote communities, where alcohol is banned.

Police sources told the NT News there had been a noticeable increase in the number of long grassers(Abos) in Darwin during this Wet.

One officer said he recognised a number of people from Katherine on the streets of Darwin, whom he believed had moved to get easier access to booze.

A limited TBL trial began in Darwin at the start of last month but it's now been decided to beef up the police presence outside takeaway premises.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Anne-Marie Murphy said at least 24 officers would be on patrol near Darwin takeaway outlets.

If people are unable to prove they intend drinking alcohol outside of a restricted area then police are empowered to tip out their grog.

"Alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour and violence is a problem and police are always looking at alternative measures to reduce alcohol related harm to the community," Ms Murphy said.

"TBL activity is one such measure.

"There are a number of liquor outlets within the Darwin metropolitan division and the Casuarina division where the TBLs will be located. The locations have been identified as problematic in terms of anti-social behaviour."

It's planned to rotate the booze busters through "primary and secondary" alcohol outlets depending on the circumstances.

"Troublesome areas are generally public spaces in the proximity to liquor outlets," Ms Murphy said.

NT CORRECTIONS workers have said a teenager on remand for more than a year over a drunken bashing death is suitable to be released from prison on a supervised bond – despite being homeless.

The young man, now 18, faces a maximum 16 years in prison.

He has admitted violent conduct causing the death of Rick Dermody, 39, in a carpark at Casuarina in 2013.

Defence lawyer Ian Read SC said his client "couldn't believe what he had done".

A Correctional Services pre-sentence report said the teenager was suitable to be supervised by a probation officer if released on a part-suspended sentence.

His parents were negligent and the man who raised him had moved interstate, the NT Supreme Court heard.

Justice Judith Kelly said it was hard to keep track of a homeless young offender and he may fail if released without stability.

"I am concerned about a lack of suitable accommodation," she said. "We can't keep people in jail because they don't have some place to live."

The court heard Corrections' role was more about monitoring compliance than helping kids plan their future. Mr Read said he hoped there would be support for his client.

"He's done well in the confines of jail," he said. "But if he gets out – then what?"

Justice Kelly ordered a more detailed report from Corrections.

Mr Dermody was attacked over "nasty racist slurs" aimed at a gang of about 15 youths on October 28, 2013.

He spat in the face of a young man who was apologising for a previous altercation and swore.

Zachary Wurramarrba, 19, has admitted aggravated assault.

It was previously alleged he and the accused were the instigators and egged on a "shy" boy, also now 18, who admitted kicking the victim in the head.

Prosecutor Matthew Nathan said the fatal bashing was the result of a "pack mentality".

The trio will be sentenced next month.

The bloody boong! poor little "shy abbo" can have a suspended sentence because the white man was racist to him.. doesn't matter if he is dead now and his girl has no father.

Every piece of stinking black shit will see this as the justification they want for killing as many Whites as they want. Killed Whitey? Just accuse him or her of being "racist" and you're home free!

Well, that's the problem we face today. The solution? Do not associate or otherwise have dealings with the inferior mud races. That way, if a mud does try to impose itself upon your life, you know it has done so as to bring harm and sorrow into your life - and so you KNOW what must be done.

Well I try streer clear of Abos as they are often up to no good and this thread is always growing.. and the Gaol is 85% full of them up here so that speaks for it's self.

However, This Rick Dermody guy he treaded a path I tread sometimes. It could have been me that bought booze and just walked underneath the parking lot this mob of boongs bullied and then killed violently.

There is no avoiding Muds and inferior races.. they are like a plague that you have to have contact with somehow on a daily level now. Just try buy food either from a supermarket , petrol station or corner shop now without having dealings with them. Not alone to mention a multicultural workplace.

I am tired of the courts saying "Poor ,little, shy abbo. Comes from a bad family and has such a bad life.. and this big bad white man used epiphets to him and spat at him after he tried to rob him, well we'll give the dear little abo a get out of Gaol free card".

It'll be interesting what those teen coons in Yeundemu get for the murder of the white life guard?

THE alleged murder of Yuendumu pool supervisor Rick Berry by two youths was a "family matter" and has not been seen as a threat to the town's white community.

So say residents, who have vented their frustration over media reports alleging people have been fleeing the town since the incident just over a week ago.

Mr Berry's former employer and chief executive of Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC) Susie Low said misleading reports could have negative repercussions for organisations trying to recruit workers from further afield.

"We are recruiting at the moment, so that was one of the many reasons we decided to put out the statement repudiating some of the press reports, so people were aware this was a family matter," Ms Low said.

"This was not a black versus white (issue).

"And it wasn't even a Yuendumu internal conflict. It was nothing that leached into any of those areas.

"It was all about one family that broke down."

The reports triggered speculation in the wider Central Australian community that circumstances which surrounded a violent family feud in 2010, where around 100 people left the town, could be repeated.

Regional services manager from the Central Desert Council Sasha McKell, who was born and bred in Yuendumu, said: "Yuendumu is getting back on its feet" since the 2010 riots, and many more residents were now choosing to stay long term.

"Lately I've noticed there are more long-termers in Yuendumu," said Ms McKell.

"People are choosing to stay here, raise their kids, be a part of this community, be involved in the community.

"The Walpari people are really gracious and welcoming, and have always embraced all kinds of people to come and stay."

Co-manager of Warlukurlangu Arts Centre Cecilia Alfonso said even during the town's troubled years, they had never had any trouble recruiting.

"(We) have probably six or seven volunteers here, at the moment, from all over the world, we've never had any trouble recruiting," she said.

Former police officer and young community leader Sebastian Watson said Yuendumu "was an open place and there is life in the community".

"We have kids playing around, happy, with smiles on their face," Mr Watson said.

"I would say to people around the world that Walpari people are a good people.''

He said Mr Berry's death had "turned the community upside down".

"We all felt heartbroken, because (Mr Berry) knew the little kids by name."

OHHHH! what a wonderful place to go and work and be part of such a happy and vibrant community?! COME ONE COME ALL!

Doesn't matter some abos had some family problems .. one bad apple doesn't spoil the entire bunch right?

That is why we need separation between the races. Not segregation. Complete and total separation. Throw all the Abos in a fenced off area around Ayers Rock and leave them to prosper in a culturally acceptable fashion. Ship the rest of the muds back to where they belong, and we'll be free once and for all of the pestilence of the inferior mud races.
