A HEALTH practitioner working in a remote clinic is facing drug charges and ­concerns have been raised that a lack of supervision of her work practice is placing ­patient's lives at risk. 
 
Documents obtained by the NT News reveal that a formal complaint about the woman, employed by the NT Department of Health as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner, has raised issues regarding her "health, performance and conduct".

The registered nurse who filed the complaint with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) said in it, "I reasonably believe the situation is sufficiently ­serious for immediate action ... to be taken in order to protect patients from Ms (name withheld)".

The complaint against the practitioner centres around her alleged inability to perform her role safely because of her alleged deliberate and persistent breaches of the conditions imposed upon her by her governing board (ATSIHP), her alleged regular misuse of recreational drugs, and her intention not to inform AHPRA of her recent arrest for the same.

"(Name withheld) has frequently been seen at work practising under the influence of drugs, namely marijuana," the document reads.

"Earlier this year (name withheld) was arrested ... and charged with possession/supply of marijuana ... She is due to appear in court again next month."

The registered nurse, who cannot be named for fear of retribution, also claims in her complaint that a senior manger was informed about the practitioner's drug charges but did not report it to AHPRA or take further action. However, Top End Health Service ­Acting Chief Operating Officer Michael Kalimnios said the ­department "provides services to consumers with the utmost care and respect to their needs and safety".

A WOMAN allegedly attacked an ambulance with a machete as paramedics ­attempted to transport a man to hospital. 
 
St John Ambulance spokesman Craig Garraway said paramedics were called to Dundee Beach to transport a man suffering mental health issues to hospital about 9pm on Friday.

"We went to pick the ­patient up from a house but a lady we believed to be his partner didn't want us to take the man away and started trying to attack the paramedics with a machete," Mr Garraway said.

"She smashed the back window with the machete ... the patient was still inside the ­ambulance at the time.

"The paramedics were in the car and started driving out with the patient in the back ... they were all quite distraught.

"The paramedics were quite upset about the whole ­process."

Mr Garraway said the paramedics and the patient escaped without any physical injuries.

"They were left quite shaken though, and the ambulance received a lot of damage," he said.

ASSAULT rates have dramatically decreased in Alice Springs during the past year, but imprisonment numbers in the area continue to grow, according to the Criminal Lawyers Association. 
 
Offence statistics for Alice Springs from NT Police reveal there were 1453 reported assaults in the region in 2014 compared with 1942 the previous year, a drop of 25.2 per cent.

The latest Correctional Services Annual Statistics report shows there was a daily average of 621 adult prisoners in Alice Springs Correctional Centre during 2013-14. That's compared with a daily average of 602 in 2012-13.

"The most common offences for prisoners held in custody on 30 June 2014 were acts intended to cause injury (53 per cent of prisoners), followed by sexual assault and related offences (12 per cent of prisoners) and homicide and related offences (8 per cent of prisoners)," the report said.

Criminal Lawyers Association of the Northern Territory president Russell Goldflam said imprisonment rates were "not going down" and didn't correlate with the police figures.

"If there's a 25 per cent reduction in assaults then why are we not sitting with our feet up on the desks?" Mr Goldflam said. "I can assure you we're not sitting with our feet up on desks.

"We're not seeing (a reduction) in trends of the number of prosecutions commenced in the Supreme Court. We're not seeing a reduction in my office in the number of clients."

Mr Goldflam said he didn't believe the police figures were fudged.

"I know the senior police in Alice Springs wouldn't be making it up," he said.

"I'm just baffled, because if there's a terrific reduction in assaults then why are punters still going steadily through the system?

"Maybe police are now spending less time prosecuting assaults and running around chasing other things."

Department of Correctional Services spokesman David Harris said there was a "definite slowdown of prisoner growth" from 2012-13 to 2013-14 when taking population growth into account.

"We don't do formal rates per prison (but) we do look at numbers of prisoners for each prison," he said.

POLICE have released a photo of a man who allegedly punched and knocked out a bus passenger after the victim asked him and his rowdy associates to be quiet during a peak-hour journey at South Plympton on Tuesday. 
 
They allege the assault occurred about 5.25pm on the Metro bus travelling west from the city when a group of four men, including the assailant, boarded and started swearing and arguing with each other.

The male victim is believed to have told them to be quiet and was then punched by the suspect in the head, causing him to lose consciousness.

He suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident.

Police said the suspect then left the bus at a stop on Marion Road.

The attacker is described as being of Aboriginal appearance, aged in his late 20s and weighing 75kg.

He has a muscular build with short black hair, a trimmed beard and was wearing a blue-grey jacket according to police.

A WOMAN has been stabbed to death by her defacto partner in Alice Springs. 
 
Detective Superintendent Brent Warren said a man, 37, was in custody in relation to the murder of the woman, 32 around 5am on Sunday.

"Police were called to an address in Larapinta shortly before 5.00am where a 32-year-old woman had suffered a stab wound to her leg," Supt Warren said.

"She had lost a significant amount of blood.

"Her de facto partner was at the scene when Police arrived.

"She was conveyed to Alice Springs Hospital by St John Ambulance, but died before arrival."

RESIDENTS of the town camp where a young girl was allegedly raped earlier this month have rallied behind calls for improved safety. 
 
Hidden Valley town camp resident Marita McMillan said she was worried about the welfare of children.

"We are frightened because there is too much violence there, and too much drunks and people from other town camps," she said.

A government-convened meeting was held Friday to discuss safety issues and review services. Chief Minister Adam Giles said the alleged rape triggered his call for action.

However, the main indigenous service provider for all town camps in Alice Springs, Tangentyere Council, was not invited.

Chief executive Walter Shaw said he was "astounded".

"If Mr Giles took the time to meet and talk with the Tangentyere Council executive, who are all town camp residents working to improve the lives of their fellow town campers, he would find we have been putting forward solutions around community safety for years," he said.

"But they have fallen on deaf ears."

Mr Giles has said he will contact Tangentyere Council.

When Tangentyere officials do meet with Mr Giles, Mr Shaw said he will be presented a "list of recommendations".

"The list highlights areas of concern where the NT Government and its administration are failing in terms of servicing town campers," he said.

Tangentyere believes the biggest issues are overcrowding and unwelcome visitors.

  A CHRISTIAN church in Alice Springs has had the words "Allah Akbar" scratched into their glass door and windows by a man who is alleged to have assaulted a security guard and thrown rocks at his car.
The phrase "Allah Akbar" is a poorly translated version of the Islamic phrase "Allahu Akbar" which means God is greater or God is (the) greatest.

A security officer saw a man allegedly scratching the front glass doors of the Desert Life Church on Undoolya Road in Alice Springs at 9.30pm on Saturday night.

The security officer stepped in to stop the 23-year-old man from damaging the doors further when police allege he assaulted the security officer.

Superintendent Travis Wurst said the security officer then went back to his vehicle to call police. "The security guard exited the vehicle, a short time later it is alleged the male attacked the vehicle by punching the windscreen and throwing rocks at it," he said.

Desert Life Church senior pastor Keith Ainge said the alleged offender was not known to the church.

"I think from our perspective we are treating it as vandalism, we are not looking at any religious connotation or involvement in it," Mr Ainge said.

However, he said it was possible ISIS's ideology had spread into the community.

"It easily could be, because (ISIS) is in communities everywhere," he said.

Mr Ainge said the violent videos depicting young extremists committing acts of terror was inspiring copycats.

"I'm sure it is, there is no question about it, you only have to read the newspapers," he said. He said he didn't know the perpetrator.

The church's Sunday service attracts 400 people a week.

"I think the main concern is the inconvenience and its cost," Mr Ainge said.

The 23-year-old was charged with assault a person and damage to property and will appear in Alice Springs Magistrates Court on April 9.
