Hundreds  gathered at the Nightcliff Jetty last night to remember the lost life of three-year-old Aylan Kurdi. 
 
Aylan was fleeing the war in Syria with his family when he drowned near Turkey.

The Darwin Asylum Seeker Support and Advocacy Network held the vigil for Aylan and to highlight the hundreds of asylum seekers and refugees at Nauru, Manus Island and Wickham Point Detention Centre.

DASSAN advocacy co-ordinator Natasha Blucher said the Light the Dark vigil was a way to bring attention to asylum seekers around the world.

"Vigils like this are a good way of creating awareness in the broader population about what's happening on our doorstep," Ms Blucher said.


"I think it's easy for people to forget that Wickham Point Detention Centre is right there."

More than 200 people gathered at the foreshore beside the jetty at dusk to listen to volunteers talk about working at detention centres.

Rapid Creek resident Gabrielle Cleary said she had attended multiple vigils because she wanted her voice to be heard.

Of course It is, So is Greece, or even Hungary. However Germany seems to be trying to prove they aren't NAZI anymore or something .. so they are writing invitations for the entire nation of Syria to move there!

Why the hell is this Natasha clown trying to draw attention to reffos? It isn't like people know about this vermin already. SYRIAN refugees will be coming to the Territory as part of the Coalition Government's plan to resettle 12,000 refugees fleeing conflict in Syria and Iraq.

Member for Solomon Natasha Griggs said today that she has been in talks with Immigration Minister Peter Dutton about the Territory's role in the refugee crisis.

"I have advised Minister Dutton Territorians are willing to help," Ms Griggs told the NT News.



"I see this as a win-win for both refugees and North Australia gearing up for the sort of nation building projects outlined in the recent White Paper."

Mr Dutton announced the 12,000 refugees would be admitted earlier today, with a focus put on "those most in need" including women, children and persecuted minorities who have sought refuge from conflicts in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.


A team of federal Government officials will depart for the Middle East soon to identify and process potential candidates for resettlement.

It was not immediately known how many refugees will be brought to the NT.



"We have good community infrastructure, low unemployment and a historically high rental vacancy rate," Ms Griggs said.

"Quite a few community and church organisations have been in touch with me looking to assist.

"The Abbott Government will continue to be tough on people smugglers and compassionate to those in need."

All refugees will undergo security, health and character checks before being admitted to Australia and receiving permanent protection, the federal Government said.

This Natasha Griggs senator doesn't speak for everyone in the NT! If she reckons they are going to work, she's got another thing comming. Who's going to train these people to be suitable to work in the construction industry? Who's going to pay for it? Can we communicate with them?.. Give them instructions?

I don't see how it could be considered a "win win!" Probably have no viable skills,can't speak our toungue, they breed like wildfire. Judging from what the Lebs have been like in Sydney and how they've turned the place upside down I'd say it is a loose /loose situation!

How about we allocate Millions of dollars to underprivaledged white people to find jobs and get skills and accommodation before we get these Syrian scum bags , just to try big note ourselves to the UN and the EU.

We should be taking in the remaining whites in Africa for the needed construction jobs at least we can communicate with them.. and we need more white women to breed with. How about asking us if we want the Syrians here?

But as European governments face global scrutiny over their struggle to accommodate a mass exodus of refugees from war-torn Syria, what are the rich Gulf nations doing to help?

Absolutely nothing.

Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain have offered zero resettlement places to Syrian refugees, according to new data from Amnesty International.

The apparent indifference of the Gulf states is especially blunt considering they are some of the nearest neighbours to devastated Syria, where civil war and the threat of Islamic State militants have displaced millions of people.


Thousands of refugees are risking their lives in desperate hope of finding safety and prosperity in stable nations. Many have died trying to get there.

"I'm most indignant over the Arab countries who are rolling in money and who only take very few refugees," Danish Finance Minister Claus Hjort Frederiksen said in an interview this week.

"Countries like Saudi Arabia. It's completely scandalous."

They're not alone. Russia, Japan, Singapore and South Korea have also been called out by Amnesty International for offering zero resettlement places to Syrian refugees.

More than four million Syrian refugees have been resettled in just five nations: Turkey (1.9 million Syrian refugees), Lebanon (1.2 million), Jordan (650,000), Iraq (249,463) and Egypt (132,375).

Globally, 104,410 resettlement places have been offered, but that's a mere 2.6 per cent of the total population of Syrian refugees, Amnesty International said.

And their lives there are not easy. Funding shortages have forced many refugees in Lebanon to live on less than half a dollar a day, while in Jordan, 80 per cent live below the poverty line.

But in Saudi Arabia, some citizens routinely leave the air-conditioning on in their empty homes while they jet around the world.

In a television interview this week, Kuwaiti commentator Fahad Alshelaimi said his country was simply too expensive for refugees, New York Timesreported.

"You can't welcome people from another environment and another place who have psychological or nervous system problems or trauma and enter them into societies," he said, adding Kuwait was more appropriate for labourers.

Others argue the Gulf states have generously contributed humanitarian aid.

Israel was asked and blankly refused, citing that taking any refugees at all would alter the demographic of Israel from a Jewish one. A valid reason to be sure, but why accept that from the Jew and not the same from Europe or Australia? ... Oi vey! Za Holocaust! Za Holocaust!

UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage who said Mr Juncker "simply had it wrong" and the scenes of refugees being welcomed to Germany had compounded the flow of "biblical proportions".

"All they have to do is throw their passports in the Mediterranean and say they're coming from Syria," he said, adding that he thought the majority are economic migrants.

"We must stop the boats coming as the Australians did," he said.

Travel agents in Turkey report a 30 per cent rise in bookings to the country after the increase in refugee quotas this week.

Mr Junker said the eurozone will announce a major plan for legal migration in early 2016 ... German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for a "binding agreement on a binding distribution of refugees among all member states."

Hungary, Greece and Italy, a number of Eastern European and Baltic states vowed to reject the imposition of any kind of quotas from Brussels.

Britain, Ireland and Denmark are not legally bound to take part.
