City of Sydney councillor in disbelief after flag was 'snatched' from his office because the historical symbol fails to recognise First Nations people

Excerpt: The former City of Sydney flag was spotted in the background as Liberal Councillor Lyndon Gannon was on a Zoom call for a council meeting.

'I wasn't even in my office when they came in to get it,' Cr Gannon said.

The councillor said it 'boggles belief' that council staff were fixated on issues such as the flag rather than substantial problems.

'Instead of spending the last 18 months fixing the rubbish crisis, the rat plague of Kings Cross, the highly politicised NYE children's fireworks, the City has gone around confiscating inoffensive symbols,' he said.

The flag has been stored in council's 'civic collection'.

Cr Gannon decried the obliteration of historically significant items.

'Old histories should not be burned, old statues should not be torn down or defaced, and our flags should not be buried,' he said.
