Can you eat too much fruit?

Under the category of restrictive diets, there might be one even strict than veganism: the world of the fruitarian. Steve Jobs was one, as was Ashton Kutcher, until he wound up in the hospital with pancreas trouble. Even Gandhi lasted on the diet for five years, before going back to vegetarianism (less notable fruitarians include dictator Idi Amin and white supremacist Ben Klassen).

Quote from: MSMApple co-founder Steve Jobs was, briefly and famously, an ardent fruitarian—meaning he ate a diet composed primarily of fruit, which he believed would cleanse his body of harmful fluids.

"There are some people out there who are fruitarians, and from what we can tell they're perfectly healthy," says Dr. Robert Lustig, a neuroendocrinologist and professor emeritus of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco.

Sure, that diet may be healthy (and redundant), but is it too much of a good thing? Time magazine pondered that question this week in an article title "Is it possible to eat too much fruit?" Unfortunately Time's investigation was a bit inconclusive: "there's not a lot of good evidence for or against fruit-heavy diets for modern humans." Although certain populations would not thrive on an all-fruit diet—like children, pregnant women, or diabetic—for "healthy adults, experts say that eating lots and lots of fruit is unlikely to get you into trouble, as long as it's part of a normal diet."

While you might question whether the sugar contains too much fructose, the natural sugar is balanced out by the plentiful fiber available, thereby putting fruit in the definite plus column for a daily diet. But keep in mind that too much fruit might wreck havoc with your digestive tract. Also, it should be noted that pureeing all that fruit into a smoothie can lessen the health benefit, as the process eliminates the fiber while keeping all the sugar intact. But since most of us fall short of our daily five to seven servings of fruits and vegetables anyway, aiming for that amount remains a sensible guideline.

"In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, brave, hated, and scorned.
When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot."
Mark Twain.
