             Jourdan Bobbish, left, and Jacob Kudla were reported missing Sunday.  /  Family photos        After two teenage boys went missing, friends said their two families — who lived a minute's drive apart in Westland — tried all last week to gird themselves for the worst.
But on Saturday, they were left reeling all the same by brutal findings about the teens, who were inseparable in life and now in death. Two bodies found in a field near Detroit City Airport were confirmed to be the missing youths.
Hours later, at a court hearing in downtown Detroit, two men who could be tied to the youth's deaths were ordered held on charges that they stole items from the car the teens had been driving.
The identities of Jacob Kudla, 18, and Jourdan Bobbish, 17, were confirmed by the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office, said Reba Jacobs, Kudla's cousin.
"We're OK, saddened," Jacobs said. "Kind of ready for it, expected it, but didn't want it to be true."
Bobbish's father, Mike Bobbish, said his family is holding up, despite "a lot of crying."
He said the teens probably were easy targets, young men with new sneakers riding in a car with a souped-up sound system.
"They're in a bad area, naive, tougher than they really are. Something happened," Bobbish said, hours after authorities confirmed the identities of the bodies.
The medical examiner's office said the decomposed bodies were identified through dental records. Kudla died of multiple gunshot wounds and Bobbish from a single gunshot wound to the head, a spokesman said.
The bodies were found Friday in a field filled with trash and high grass on Detroit's east side. Kudla and Bobbish had been missing since last Sunday.
Meanwhile in court, Casey Jason Green, 39, and Larry Anderson, 40, were ordered held on $250,000 bond in the theft of the 2001 Chevy Cavalier, which family members said was owned by Kudla's father and routinely driven by his son.
The car was found abandoned in the 8500 block of Beechwood, near Joy Road and I-96 — far from where the boys' bodies were found — with its sound system missing, authorities said.
Magistrate Renee McDuffee in Detroit's 36th District Court refused a defense attorney's request to let the defendants post 10% bonds, which would have freed them for $25,000 apiece.
Arguing against the lower bonds, prosecutor Michael Harrison said that when police arrested the two men at 1 a.m. Tuesday, they were removing items from the car and were bleaching the vehicle's interior and exterior.
"That's highly unusual behavior for car thieves," Harrison said.
Anderson's attorney, Marvin Barnett, argued that the bond was excessive and set high because the car, but not his client, was linked to a homicide. "This case is not about a murder," he said.
McDuffee declined to reduce the bond.
"When somebody uses a chemical such as bleach, it's not to shine the car. It's to remove evidence," she responded from the bench.
Green and Anderson are charged with larceny from an auto and obstruction of justice, both 5-year felonies, and tampering with evidence, a 4-year felony.
An investigator said Thursday that police still didn't know how the car made it from Detroit's east side, where the boys were last seen, to the spot where it was found on the west side.
Jacobs, who has spoken this week on behalf of the Kudla family, said medical examiner's office personnel called at about noon Saturday with news of the bodies' identifications. She said the family deeply appreciates receiving an outpouring of support — from food and prayers to offers to search from family, friends and strangers.
"On behalf of both families, we appreciate and are thankful for everything that everyone has done," she said. Detroiters in the vicinity of where the bodies were found turned out in droves to help in the search, and others in Westland — "even people who don't even know us" — showed their concern, she said.
A joint church memorial service for the two teens is being planned, probably to be held Saturday, said Jacobs, 28, of Detroit. She said details of the service likely would be decided by the Kudla and Bobbish families Sunday
Kudla, a Schoolcraft College student known as Jake, and Bobbish, a high school senior, "are like brothers" and often drove to Detroit together, Jacobs said Friday. "We have a grandma and uncles who live on Detroit's east side, and it's normal for them to visit," she said.
Assistant Wayne Count Prosecutor Maria Miller said in an email Saturday that Detroit police are still actively investigating the teens' disappearance.
