Farmers' unions say the number of murders each year is rising and attacks are at their highest level since 1990  Working on a South African farm is the country's most dangerous occupation, with twice as many farm workers killed as police officers each year, according to farmers' unions. The number of farm murders rose to 67 in 2014 from 62 the previous year, Afriforum and the Transvaal Agricultural Union (TAU) said. There were 277 farm attacks in 2014, which the organisation believes is the highest figure since 1990.  The 132.2 murders on farms per 100,000 people is more than double the murder rate for policeman at 54.4 per 100,000 people, the unions added, and 32.2 per 100,000 for the country's population as a whole.

Two Italian aid workers abducted by Al Qaeda in Syria last summer today arrived in Rome, where they were welcomed with 'relief' a day after their release. Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni welcomed Greta Ramelli, 20, and Vanessa Marzullo, 21, after their flight from Turkey landed at Ciampino military airport near Rome in the early hours of the morning.

They were captured by militants believed to be from Al-Qaeda affiliated group Jabhat al-Nusra in August while distributing aid in Aleppo.  The foreign ministry said yesterday their release was the result of 'intense work by team Italy' but officials have not revealed whether a ransom was paid or how they came to be freed.

She received her first death threat within days.

One was a fatwa that came from radical and influential cleric Anwar al-Awlaki -- an American-born imam who lived in Yemen -- who said Norris was a "prime target" for execution for creating blasphemous cartoons.

Norris had kicked off controversy in April 2010 with a cartoon published online about an imaginary group called "Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor" that proposed an "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day."

She disappeared, at the advisement of the FBI, in the fall of that year and has been in hiding since.

AfriForum accused the deputy minister of agriculture, Bheki Cele, of misleading the public about the reality on South Africa's farms, and that he does not seriously consider the plea of those who call for the prioritisation of farm murders. This follows after Cele was questioned this morning during a press conference on farm murders, to which he responded that people should stop making a racial issue of farm murders (see report).

Ernst Roets, deputy CEO of AfriForum, said Cele uses this tactic to evade the true extent of the crisis. "Instead of recognising the need to prioritise farm murders, a false accusation of racism is made."

Roets explained that it rather seems as though the government is looking through racial glasses at farm murders and for that reason is not prepared to take any action. "The hard facts are that the majority of farmers who are being murdered, are white. Whether it is simply because most farmers are white, or because there is an underlying racial motive, will at this stage amount to speculation. We know, however, that black farmers and farm workers are also murdered during farm attacks."

Roets added that AfriForum does not distinguished along racial lines when they are asking for farm murders to be prioritised, and that AfriForum even wrote to the president about black farm workers who are being murdered in farm attacks.

"The problem, however, is that the prioritisation of farm murders apparently does not fit within the ruling party's political agenda. If the government uses the necessary resources and displays the necessary political leadership, farm murders will stop. What happens in practice is the opposite of this - farmers are used as political punching bags and cutting remarks are made against those who call for the prioritisation of farm murders."

As the world rightly focuses on the recent terror attacks in Paris on Charlie Hedbo and a kosher grocery store, it should be noted that the second attack is part of a larger problem: the ongoing vitriol toward the French Jewish community.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders invited French Jews to move to Israel. That's a nice gesture, but it's not enough. The United States should join Israel and offer to also open up its shores as a refuge to the endangered Jews of France.

Interpol finally issued an international red notice for Viktor Yanukovych today, almost a year after the former President fled Ukraine following a failed attempt to violently disperse Euromaidan protesters on Kyiv's Independence Square. More than a hundred people were killed when security forces opened fire on demonstrators.

His name appeared on the international police agency's 'wanted' list on charges of "misappropriation, embezzlement or conversion of property by malversation, if committed in respect of an especially gross amount, or by an organized group."

In the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris last week Haaretz published a daring cartoon juxtaposing journalists killed in Gaza by Israel during the brutal summer slaughter with the journalists killed at the office of the satirical magazine in Paris. This set off a chain reaction which ultimately led to calls for murdering Haaretz journalists after Ronen Shoval, founder of the neo-Zionist and proto-fascist ImTirtzu movement, called for an investigation of the newspaper's editors.

According to the Mondoweiss report, the offending cartoon by Noa Olchowski was published with a series of cartoons Haaretz ran in their Hebrew edition, a project by the site's graphic designers to pay tribute to Charlie Hebdo cartoonists gunned down at the magazine's Paris office. Including the hashtags #JeSuisCharlie and #JeSuisGaza it reads (original Hebrew):

Three mosques in Sweden have suffered arson attacks in recent weeks, even before two Islamist gunmen killed twelve people at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, the French satirical magazine, on Wednesday.

"The person said with an extremely firm voice that "the mosque is soon going to blow", then he hung up," the mosque's press spokesman Mohammed El-Alti told TT of the threat.   

Around 120 people had gathered in the mosque to hear a lecture.  "They had to get out as quickly as possible and then the police came," El-Alti said. The police on Friday night assured that there was no risk that the threat could be successfully carried out, although they would give no details of what measures had been taken. 

"We have registered an offence of serious threats against the group," said  Ulf Lörstad from the local police. "We have received a whole lot of emails, and also someone rung us," El-Alti added.

NASHVILLE -- The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating three church fires in Lauderdale and Haywood counties, according to the bureau. It is standard ATF protocol to investigate all fires and attempted fires at houses of worship, according to Michael Knight, public information officer with the ATF's Nashville Field Division.

All three fires occurred in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Jan. 7. No injuries or fatalities were reported. The Tennessee State Fire Marshal's Office Bomb and Arson Unit along with local police and fire departments are assisting. A certified fire investigator from the bureau is coordinating the efforts to determine if the fires are connected.

The churches include Trinity Methodist Church, 5659 Nunn Road, Brownsville, Haywood County; Springhill Baptist Church, 237 Springhill Road, Ripley, Lauderdale County; and Cowboy Church (nondenominational) 5880 Henning Orysa Road, Henning, Lauderdale County, according to a release from the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance.

It is believed that the local school boarded handed down discipline for the image that circulated on instagram, a photo sharing website because of the "painful history of racial strife" in the area.

Lets make this abundantly clear: this picture did not cause a shred of pain to anyone who saw it.
Is it stupid? That is irrelevant in 2015. If pictures are causing you "pain" then you really need to consult the help of a psychiatrist.

"We want this to be an educational experience so that families or groups of school kids can see how it really was: To experience the tiny rooms and the dampness of the bunker. We want to recreate it to show people," Mr Mersmann to the Local news site.

The museum, named Top Secret, is not in fact in Berlin but in Oberhausen, a town in North Rhine-Westphalia. Top Secret is no stranger to controversy. It made the news when it opened a replica of the building Osama bin Laden was living in before he was captured and killed by American special forces in 2011.

But the museum's director assured critics that the site would not become a place of "pilgrimage" for neo-Nazis. "We certainly don't want to recreate a place for the misguided people who still see him as a hero to come as a pilgrimage," he said.

Hitler moved to the Führerbunker in January 1945 and remained there until his suicide in April, just days after marrying Eva Braun, when he realised the war was a lost cause.

In 1947 Soviet troops attempted to blow up the bunker, but succeeded in damaging a number of walls. In 1958 the East German government began to more thoroughly demolish the complex. The site was left unmarked for many years, and it was only in 2006 that the location was received an official information board. It had been policy to ignore such sites, so they would not become places of pilgrimage for Nazi supporters.

Admission to the ICC will allow Palestinians to bring accusations against Israeli officials responsible for military crimes
UNITED NATIONS, January 3. /TASS/. The State of Palestine will become a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 60 days, Palestine's permanent observer to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, told journalists.

Mansour announced the transfer to the UN Secretariat of documents on joining the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and a number of other international pacts. He said Palestine is becoming the 123rd state member of the International Criminal Court. In line with the established procedure, it will happen in 60 days.

Swiss authorities have decided to let returning an Islamic State jihadist back into Switzerland with a slap on the wrist. The threat posed by returning jihadists has deeply concerned Western intelligence and law-enforcement agencies due to worries they may launch terror attacks in their home countries.

Just last week, France's Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve warned that the threat of an attack by returning jihadists was real and that Europeans needed to mobilize against it. In France, "there are operations, arrests ...every day to avoid it happening," he said.," Cazeneuve said after a meeting with of European Union (EU) interior ministers in Brussels to discuss the jihadist threat.

Nonetheless, Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber ordered that a 30-year-old recent convert to Islam from the western Swiss canton of Vaud work 600 hours of community service instead of receiving jail time. Switzerland is not an EU member. The jihadist must receive psychiatric care in addition to performing community service.

The man, whose identity has not been released, left for Syria in December 2013 and stayed in a training camp for two weeks before having second thoughts. The Islamic State held him prisoner for 54 days before releasing him and allowing him to return to Switzerland. Switzerland's Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) says 55 of its citizens have left to fight for jihadist groups since 2001. Of them, 31 left to fight in Iraq or Syria while 24 traveled to Pakistan, Yemen, Afghanistan or Somalia.

Switzerland is not alone Europe in taking a lenient approach to returning jihadists. Danish authorities similarly have adopted an approach emphasizing rehabilitation rather than punishment. This policy continues despite the fact more Danish citizens have traveled to fight in Syria per capita than anywhere else in Europe. Denmark's second largest city, Aarhus, has welcomed returning jihadists back.

Rather than face arrest, returning Danish jihadists receive free psychological counseling and help finding jobs or university admission. Police in Aarhus have also set up routine meetings this year with a mosque which had connections with approximately 30 jihadists who went to fight in Syria. "In 2013, we had 30 young people go to Syria," Jorgen Ilum, Aarhus's police commissioner, told the Washington Post in October. "This year, to my knowledge, we have had only one."

One of Germany's most famous landmarks will go dark on Monday night as thousands people are expected to flood the streets in anti-Islam demonstrations. As the Pegida movement against the so-called "Islamification of the West" has grown, so has opposition to it and Cologne Cathedral's silent protest is set to be one of the most symbolic so far.

It will turn its lights off for almost three hours during the rally, following the example of the Semperoper concert hall in Dresden, where the protests have been centred. In December, more than 17,000 people marched on the city with the "Patriotic Europeans against the Islamification of the West", filling the city's historic square singing Christmas carols and waving German flags.

They say the government's failure to provide adequate medical care in camps on the Australian territory has compromised the health of refugees. The lawyers say doctors who have visited detention camps agree that standards there fall well short of the Australian regulations. Over the past several years, thousands of people have been held on Christmas Island, in the Indian Ocean. There are currently 759 men, 97 women and 148 children in detention there.

Swedish police have increased security around mosques in Sweden after a mosque in the Eastern city of Uppsala was set on fire on New Year's Eve, making it the third arson attack on a mosque in Sweden since December 25 when a blaze was started at a mosque in the Southeast town of Eskilstuna, injuring five people.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Fire officials said no hazards were found at the Jewish Community Center after four people complained of feeling ill and dizzy. Scottsdale, Tempe and Phoenix fire departments responded to the center on Scottsdale Road just north of Cactus Road Monday.

Scottsdale Captain Danny Ables said paramedics received a medical call reporting that someone felt ill and was dizzy. While the paramedic was treating that patient, additional people complained of similar symptoms. The call was then elevated to a hazardous materials investigation. Ables said four people were treated and all refused additional treatment. Tempe Fire's HAZMAT team investigated the building and found no hazards.
