For good or bad, the nature of immigration in Canada has changed under the Conservatives. Prime Minister Stephen Harper confirmed that when he spoke about the changes to immigration brought in under his watch during a candid response in New York earlier this year.

"We have been quite systematically re-orienting our immigration over the last several years to make it more focused on economic needs and focused on more long-term labour market needs," Harper told Wall Street Journal editor Gerard Baker on Sept. 24.

While many changes were initiated by Employment and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney during his five years as immigration minister, his successor, Chris Alexander, has overseen the most recent and oftentimes controversial changes to immigration policies.

Australia's anti-halal campaigns gather pace

Groups call for changes to halal certification on grounds of consumer cost and choice  A campaign to boycott halal-certified food is gathering momentum in Australia under the guise of a consumer choice drive. The Boycott Halal in Australia and Halal Choices groups oppose halal certification on the grounds of the cost to the consumer as well as animal welfare and argue that certifying bodies funnel money to terrorism.

The former is planning to petition the government for changes to the Competition and Consumer Act so halal certification is paid for only by those who buy halal products, known as 'user-pays.' The worldwide campaign has a strong social media presence with more than 54,000 Facebook followers and urges people to "boycott all companies and organizations that promote or use halal products and services."

Boycott Halal claims halal products "fund Islamic expansion by any means."

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Fire officials said no hazards were found at the Jewish Community Center after four people complained of feeling ill and dizzy. Scottsdale, Tempe and Phoenix fire departments responded to the center on Scottsdale Road just north of Cactus Road Monday.

Scottsdale Captain Danny Ables said paramedics received a medical call reporting that someone felt ill and was dizzy. While the paramedic was treating that patient, additional people complained of similar symptoms. The call was then elevated to a hazardous materials investigation. Ables said four people were treated and all refused additional treatment. Tempe Fire's HAZMAT team investigated the building and found no hazards.
