Claims Conference ups funding for Holocaust survivors

Allocations for social services raised 21%, to $365 million in 2015. The Claims Conference will raise its allocations to social service organizations serving Jewish Holocaust victims by 21 percent over last year.

The allocations for 2015 will total $365 million, an increase of $80 million over 2014, Julius Berman, president of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, announced in a statement. The allocations are used primarily for

home care, as well as for hunger relief, medical care, winter aid, and transportation for Holocaust survivors in 47 countries.

Protesters broke out in chants and disrupted a public hearing held by the Seattle Housing Authority on Monday night. They were protesting the agency's plan to raise rents for tenants who are deemed able to work.

In a packed community center in West Seattle, Housing Authority executive director Andrew Lofton tried to present the proposal, but had a hard time. The crowd periodically interrupted with chants of "Rent hikes — no!" and "Show me the jobs!"

Speaking on MidPoint, Nye said he blames an older generation of evangelicals "who have very strong conservative views" and who are "reluctant to let kids learn about evolution." Their presence on school boards leads to debates over curriculum, Nye argued, which further inhibits schools' ability to teach facts.

"Religion is one thing. People get tremendous comfort and community with their religions," Nye said. "But whatever you believe, whatever deity or higher power you might believe in, the Earth is not 6,000 years old."

Some Florida city leaders get up and leave a city council meeting before a prayer mentioning Satan, Allah and Zeus is read.

In a video posted to YouTube the Mayor of Lake Worth, Pam Triolo and several commissioners can be seen leaving the room on Dec. 2, as atheist Preston Smith prepared to lead the invocation before a city council meeting. Preston's invocation invokes the names of Satan, Zeus, Allah, Jesus, Buddha and Thor among others.

According to WPTV, another man has put in a request to stand at the podium and lead an invocation. This time with a satanic prayer. "We want to make a circus out of it," explained Chaz Stevens. "We want to make a fiasco out of it, we want to make it so freaking, utterly ridiculous that they rethink this."

South African Prison Rape Survivors Speak Out for the First Time December 13, 2014 Henri Le Riche -- "South African prisons are notorious the world-over for their endemic sexual abuse. -- Oscar Pistorious, Shrien Dewani, and other high profile accused have leveraged this fact in their efforts to avoid time behind bars. Despite this, prisoner rape is not well understood by South Africa's public, and is more likely to be joked about than receive the serious attention it urgently needs. Prisoners — as the 'face' of pervasive violent crime in South Africa — are told that they "deserve to be raped", and the public accepts prisoner rape as a norm. This hostility, the stigma attached to victims, and the lack of support provided by authorities, deter survivors from reporting rape. It causes the dismissal and rejection of those who do speak out, intensifying their trauma. Afrikaners, people of European decent are a small minority of 4 million, living under a black nationalist regime of 50 million. -- A government where minority rights, human rights, and hate crimes against them are denied by the government, media and left leaning human rights organisations. Now, three exceptionally brave men, two white and one black, have come forward to share their stories about surviving rape in South Africa's prisons. They want to bring it out of the shadows, and are demanding action. Vincent, Francois and Thabo are the first South African survivors of prisoner rape to tell their stories in this way: "Vincent* tells how he was raped by two gang members in an overcrowded cell in a Western Cape awaiting trial facility. This was his very first sexual experience. "Vincent asked for help from nurses, wardens, priests, social workers, and even a magistrate who all rejected him and told him to expect this treatment in prison. "He only received medical attention three years after he was raped when he was sentenced, and then learned he was HIV-positive as a result of the rape. "Vincent calls on the Department of Correctional Services to stop this from happening to others, and encourages survivors to speak up. After telling his story, Vincent feels stronger than before, and says "I know I have a purpose in this life." -- Francois was violently raped twice in an Eastern Cape correctional centre, once at knife-point, and on Valentine's Day he was raped a second time. "He reported the rapes to the warders, but never received counseling or support. In despair, Francois attempted suicide. "After being released, he sued the Department of Correctional Services, and after 10 years he accepted a settlement offer based on the promise that they would take action to stop inmates from being raped. When nothing changed, Francois decided to tell his story. Francois encourages other survivors to seek help and says "I know I can make it because I'm a survivor." BERLIN/NUREMBERG (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday condemned anti-Muslim demonstrations centered on the eastern city of Dresden, saying there was "no place in Germany" for hatred of Muslims or any other minority.

In a speech at a party congress of her Bavarian allies in Nuremberg, Merkel also denounced an attack on buildings in a nearby town being turned into refuge for asylum-seekers. The structures were set on fire and daubed with swastikas.

"It is unbearable when homes of asylum-seekers are defiled, when people try to make radical slogans," Merkel said, adding that everyone coming to Germany had the right to be treated decently

The 20 cent increase was announced by Labour Minister Sam Hamad on Thursday morning in Quebec.

Wages for employees who earn tips will also increase from $9.05 per hour to $9.20.

The minister noted that more than 260,000 Quebecers are paid the minimum wage and that the majority are women.

About 500 Syrian refugees including women and children have staged their sixth day of a hunger strike in front of Greece's Parliament House in Athens. The hunger-strikers, who reached Greece from Turkey in inflatable boats, called on the Greek government to observe their rights as refugees and held placards reading: "We escaped from death in Syria to vagrancy in Greece."

Khalsa, a 40-year-old woman who had been Greece for almost two months, told Anadolu Agency on Monday: "We are seeking asylum and some decent treatment. My four children and and husband are still in Syria." She said she had lost all contact with her family since she had arrived in Athens. Refaat, another Syrian refugee who had been in Greece for four months, said: "We faced problems on our way here, but the Greek authorities treated us well in order for us to arrive safely."

But he said the government needed to listen to them and take into consideration their rights as refugees. "We want the Greek government to give us passports in order for us to be able to leave," he said. One hunger-striker, a 70-year-old man, was taken to hospital after he fainted because of low temperature and a lack of food, health officials said. The refugees said they would continue their silent demonstration until their demands were heard by Greek officials.

MPs from across the political spectrum have called for more research into the attitudes of young Dutch Turks to the Islamic State, after a poll of 300 showed 80% saw nothing wrong in jihad, or holy war, against non-believers. The survey found 90% of young Turks think those fighting against Syrian president Assad's troops are 'heroes' and half thought it would be a good thing if Dutch Muslims went to join the fight.

Social affairs minister Lodewijk Asscher told website nu.nl on Tuesday the results of the survey were 'worrying' and pledged to carry out more in-depth research. He also said the research was contradictory, with high support for jihad but very little support for a religious caliphate. Speaking after a visit to the Kuba mosque in IJmuiden on Wednesday, Asscher said he had failed to find anyone who supported IS, the Volkskrant reports.

The Forum research involved a mixture of online and face-to-face interviews with Dutch Turks aged between 18 and 34. It also showed 74% of Dutch Turks and 61% of Dutch Moroccans oppose the declaration of an Islamic caliphate in the region and a clear majority (62%) consider democracy essential for progress. Just 8% thought a caliphate was better for the Arabic world than a democracy.

Forum said the support for pro-IS fighters among Turkish youngsters may be due to the coverage of events in the Middle East on Turkish broadcasters, watched by 86% of those questioned. By contrast, only 27% of the Moroccan youngsters in the survey watched Moroccan news programmes.

Dozens of pieces of Nazi memorabilia were sold at an ACT auction house on Sunday, shocking a Canberra rabbi who said items from the infamous regime had no place in modern society.Dozens of pieces of Nazi regalia have sold for top dollar at two ACT auctions in the past six weeks, prompting a Canberra rabbi to call the listings an "atrocity".

A Hitler Youth knife, Luftwaffe medals, stamps featuring Adolf Hitler and several items adorned with swastikas were sold at the Auction Barn in Fyshwick in two separate auctions. The Sunday Canberra Times understands the items were sold to the auction house by a Canberra family with German origins.

ACT Jewish Community rabbi Alon Meltzer said he was disgusted to find people were profiting from selling Nazi artefacts.He called on elected officials to denounce the auction and make it clear there was no place for such sales in Canberra. "It's an atrocity. As a rabbi we deal with people who have survived the holocaust, who are now older, who really carry the burden of that emotional strife with them every single day - the fact they don't have their families round them," Mr Meltzer said.



"So to see a place like Canberra, which is a beautiful melting pot of cultures and of diversity, with a lot of tolerance and respect, to see that community have something like this occurring is a blight to the memory of those who were killed."
Auction Barn auction co-ordinator Stan Jordan said the business did not sell items which were considered unethical."[We don't sell] stuff we think we can't sell and then there's stuff which isn't moral to sell," he said.

"[But this] is exactly the same as what we have in the War Memorial. It's just their side of the story isn't it?" "A lot of the items with Nazi symbology on them - the "S" belt buckle, several of the brassards, one of the knives, are Hitler Youth items."The Hitler Youth was the only approved youth organisation in Germany from 1933 to 1945 [so] if we are to assume that this is the collection of personal items of the Luftwaffe man, it is highly likely that he was a member of Hitler Youth."

A German court dismissed a case against a Cologne man for his alleged involvement in the June 1944 massacre of hundreds of civilians in France.

On Tuesday, a Cologne state court tossed the case against the 89-year-old defendant, named only as Werner C., saying there was not enough evidence to connect him to the massacre, The Associated Press reported.

The prosecutor in the western German city of Dortmund charged Werner with gunning down 25 civilians in Oradour-sur-Glane along with other members of his SS tank infantry unit called Der Fuehrer. In all, 642 village residents were murdered. More than half were women and children locked into a church that was set ablaze.

The defendant reportedly also was charged as an accessory in the massacre by cordoning off and guarding the church or by bringing flammable material inside.

Werner has said he was in the village at the time but did not take part in the killings.

OTTAWA - A slickly produced video released on Sunday urged Muslims to launch indiscriminate attacks against Canadians, similar to those carried out in October in Ottawa and Montreal.

The SITE Intelligence Group, an American based company that monitors trends within the global jihadist movement, said the video was produced by the Islamic State and the Levant. It was also been distributed on Twitter and jihadi forums. On the video a man, who says he is a Canadian and identifies himself as "Abu Anwar al-Canadi," urges his Muslim countrymen to follow the example of Martin Couture-Rouleau.

The 23-year-old is among dozens of Canadians under RCMP investigation after allegedly making their way to Syria. Couture-Rouleau killed one soldier — warrant officer Patrice Vincent — and injured another when he ran them down with a car in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., in October.

The video also references Michael Zehaf Bibeau's October attack in which he killed an honour guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa before being shot dead while storming Parliament Hill. "O people of Canada, you are said to be an educated people," Abu Anwar says in clear English as the video begins.

Riots and clashes with the police in several major cities in Greece have marked the anniversary of the killing of teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos by a policeman. Skirmishes were reported in several Exarcheia spots.

Several store fronts were burned on Panepistimiou street. As the mass of protesters approached Syntagma Square, more molotov cocktails were thrown at police and shop windows. Groups were separated from the main body of the rally and broke store fronts on side streets. After the protesters dispersed in front of the parliament building at Syntagma Square, the battlefield was transferred to Exarcheia Square and side streets where there were multiple arsons of buildings and cars and fights with the riot police. The National Technical University of Athens (Polytechneio) was under siege, while dozens of suspects were arrested. -

PARIS — Thousands of Holocaust survivors and family members in the United States and elsewhere will be entitled to compensation from a $60 million French-U.S. fund announced Friday, as reparations to those deported by France's state rail company SNCF during the Nazi occupation. As part of the deal, the U.S. government will work to end lawsuits and other compensation claims in U.S. courts against the SNCF, which is bidding for lucrative high-speed rail and other contracts in U.S. markets. State legislators in Maryland, New York, Florida and California have tried to punish SNCF for its Holocaust-era actions.

"This is another measure of justice for the harms of one of history's darkest eras," said U.S. Special Adviser on Holocaust Issues Stuart Eizenstat, who spent three years working with French officials on the agreement. The French Foreign Ministry and U.S. State Department announced an accord Friday for the compensation fund, which will be financed by the French government and managed by the United States. The agreement will be signed on Monday in Washington, but for the money to be authorized it still must get approval from the French Parliament, which could take months.

The French government has already paid more than $6 billion in reparations — but only to French citizens and certain deportees. The new deal will allow compensation for Americans, Israelis and some others who were not eligible for other French reparations programs. There are around 250 people in the U.S. who are eligible under the new fund as direct survivors or spouses, according to an advocacy group, but several thousand may be eligible as heirs to survivors or spouses who died between 1948 and today.

The money should break down to about $100,000 each for survivors, and tens of thousands of dollars for spouses, Eizenstat said. SNCF transported about 76,000 French Jews to Nazi concentration camps, though experts disagree on its degree of guilt. SNCF has expressed regret for what happened, but argues that it had no effective control over operations during the Nazi occupation from 1940 to 1944.

Although SNCF is not a party to the agreement, the company will contribute $4 million over the next five years to fund Holocaust memorials and museums in the U.S., Israel and France, according to Eizenstat. The French government pledged to encourage French lawmakers to approve the deal, Eizenstat said. "The objective today was to be able to provide reparations — even 70 years later — that they could claim, given the trauma, the barbarity and the horror that the deportation represented for them," said Patrizianna Sparacino-Thiellay, a French ambassador for human rights and spoliation, who was a key negotiator and architect of the deal.

Amid the legal challenges to SNCF, Eizenstat said the French approached him two years ago to talk about a possible deal, and expressed a desire to conclude an agreement by the end of this year. The French government is holding several events marking 70 years since the Allies liberated France from Nazi control in 1944. Word of the accord comes as France, home to western Europe's largest Jewish community, is battling new concerns about anti-Semitism. French authorities and Jewish leaders denounced a rape and robbery attack with anti-Semitic overtones this week against a French couple.

The number of anti-Semitic incidents in France has grown 91 percent this year compared to last year, according to CRIF, France's leading Jewish organization. Incidents such as graffiti on Jewish gravestones and violent assaults spiked around the Gaza war this summer, and Jewish groups are concerned about rising Islamic extremism and the resurgent far right. U.S. Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney of New York, who had pushed to get the U.S. government to pressure the French government to agree to compensation, hailed the deal as a "breakthrough in a decades-long struggle for justice."
