On the subject of farmed animal slaughter, defra state 'it is an absolute offence to cause or permit an animal avoidable excitement, pain or suffering. There are also specific rules on handling, stunning, slaughter or killing of animals.'

Government response

The religious slaughter of animals without prior stunning is permitted in the UK.  The laws governing animal welfare at slaughter in both the EU and UK require animals to be stunned before slaughter, but make an exemption from this requirement for religious slaughter carried out by Jews and Muslims.

The Government recognises the needs of certain communities and accepts the importance which they attach to the right to slaughter animals for food in accordance with their beliefs.

When animals are slaughtered, the process must be humane and comply with the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations 1995, as amended governing animal welfare at slaughter.  When, for reasons of religion, animals are not stunned before slaughter, the operation must be carried out without causing unnecessary suffering, and in compliance with specific controls.

Religious slaughter may only take place in licensed slaughterhouses (approved premises), and Official Veterinarians of the Food Standards Agency monitor and enforce the rules set out in the Regulations daily.

The Government is aware that the slaughter of animals without prior stunning is an issue in which many people and organisations are interested, and, as such, will continue to engage with interested parties in order to find a way forward that is acceptable to those concerned. Dispatches goes undercover in some African churches in the UK, where evangelical pastors perpetuate a strong belief in witchcraft. They preach that some people are possessed by evil spirits, and that these spirits bring bad luck into the lives of others.

The only way to rid the possessed from the witchcraft spell and lift their curse is to 'deliver' them: a kind of exorcism that can be very traumatic. Some pastors charge significant sums of money to perform these deliverances.

Often it is children who are denounced as witches by these pastors, and this labelling can lead to the physical and emotional abuse of those children at the hands of their families. In extreme cases it has led to the deaths of some children.

In parts of Africa, branding a child a witch is now outlawed, but in Britain this practise is perfectly legal, despite the fact it can have horrific consequences.

Dispatches reveals just what goes on behind closed doors in these African churches, exposing the pastors who exploit the religious beliefs of the most vulnerable.

A BLACK Palm Bay teenager could be charged with a hate crime [Edit: He wasn't] after being accused of attacking a white man because he was listening to rap music.

Joshuah Lamb, 14, allegedly punched 22-year-old David McKnight because he did not think white people should listen to that type of music, Florida police were quoted as saying on WFTV.com. [If only more muds did the same, we wouldn't have to put up with mud C-rap music from the media and less White kids would turn into Whiggers ~ Cailen.]

Mr McKnight had been on the sidewalk listening to Wasted by Gucci Mane on a stereo before the incident.

"The argument involved the black male suspect saying, 'You shouldn't be listening to rap music because you're white.'" Palm Bay police spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez said.

"The victim said he can listen to whatever type of music he wanted to and then the fist fight was on."

Mr McKnight said he did not fight back.

"I couldn't get away fast enough, let's just put it that way. Then one of them spit on me, punched me, knocked me down, got a couple of kicks in from a couple of them," he said.

Mr Lamb was reportedly with seven friends at the time.

"I told him to drop it. I was like, 'Just drop it, let's go, there is eight of you and one of me. Just drop it.' And he says, 'I'm not dropping anything.' Bam! Punched me," Mr McKnight said.

"I feel it's a racial thing really," he added.

Mr McKnight suffered a broken toe, concussion, a swollen eye and strangulation marks around his neck.

Officers later arrested Mr Lamb on battery charges and he was now being held in a juvenile detention centre.

State prosecutors were now deciding if he would be charged with a hate crime. [He wont be - which is wrong after what he did, but if it encourages more Blacks to attempt to stop Whites listening to C-rap, then it is still a win for us ~ Cailen.]

[Telstra hit with $18.5m fine]

Telstra hit with $18.5m fine

Telstra will not appeal a massive $18.55 million fine for anti-competitive behaviour by blocking small telco players access to telephone exchanges around Australia.


The judgment is the biggest penalty for an Australian telecommunications company but lags behind the record $36 million handed out to cardboard maker Visy when it was headed by the late Richard Pratt.


The corporate watchdog had pushed for a $40 million fine for the breaches, which occurred between January 2006 and February 2008 under the Sol Trujillo reign at Telstra, but Justice John Middleton believed the telco's conduct was not deliberately anti-competitive.


The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) had taken Telstra to the Federal Court of Australia for refusing competitors access 27 times to installing ADSL equipment at seven exchanges around Australia. [more ...]

WEAPONS such as knuckledusters, flick knives and electronic shock devices will be almost impossible to import under tough laws to be announced today by the Gillard Government.

Switching the election focus to law and order, Labor will release a list of 22 weapons - including ballistic knives, butterfly knives, gas-filled shark darts and body armour - that will effectively be banned.

Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said the move would help make streets safer. "It will mean fewer fatalities and injuries by knives and other weapons," he said.

Mr O'Connor said an elected Gillard Government would immediately impose "an extremely hard test" requiring anyone wanting to import the weapons to prove a lawful domestic purpose.

"There are almost no legitimate purposes for many of these weapons," he said.

"We have to make it very, very difficult to import such weapons."

The list also includes extendable batons, flails, non-ceremonial maces, sheath knives, trench knives and hand or foot claws.

It will also be announced today that state police ministers agreed four weeks ago to review their laws on possession and regulation of knives and weapons, to create uniform national laws.

The package is aimed at appealing to rising voter fears about knife crime.

"The community is very concerned about the prevalence of knives and knife attacks," Mr O'Connor said.

"We want to reduce the number of such knives, reduce the easy access, reduce the capacity to conceal weapons and reduce the level of crime."

The promise comes as Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott both take their campaigns to Melbourne today.

The Government believes existing laws that require a letter from police and a permit from Customs before weapons can be imported have failed, with 16,700 bladed weapons confiscated by Customs last year.

Mr O'Connor said the new approach would give Customs more power by forcing importers to prove a legal purpose. "We will reduce quite dramatically the number of knives because it's going to be very hard to demonstrate a legal purpose for some of these," he said.

IT was expected to be a ruling on rival models of human evolution, written in a code of billions of letters. But an analysis of the draft Neanderthal genome sequence, published last week, has widened the dispute over our ancestry.

Opposing camps are claiming support for their theories in the celebrated cavemen's DNA.

Attention is returning to Australian Aborigines and fossils of Indonesian Home erectus for evidence to settle the long-running dispute over human origins and dispersal.

The scientific community was stunned last week when an international team led by the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig published results in Science of its analysis of a sequence covering 60 per cent of the Neanderthal genome.

The work showed that the Neanderthals, who reigned over Europe and the Middle East for more than 100,000 years, contributed between 1 per cent and 4 per cent of the DNA of present-day people outside Africa.

"The Neanderthals are not totally extinct," Max Planck Institute geneticist Svante Paabo told journalists in a teleconference. "In some of us, they live on a little bit."

Since the Neanderthal type specimen (the material on which the formal species definition is based) was discovered at Feldhofer in Germany's Neander Valley in 1856, scholars have been arguing about the status of the stocky hominin.

The debate over Homo neanderthalensis has been politically charged. Some Neanderthal advocates view the hominins, which had protruding brow ridges, big noses and, in some cases, red hair, more as a former ethnic minority of modern humans than as members of a different, extinct species.

The Neanderthals had passable stone technology. They decorated their bodies and probably had some level of language. Some scholars say they buried their dead and cared for their sick and elderly. But, until now, many have doubted that the hominins would have stirred romantic passions in our species.

The place of Neanderthals in the human family tree is critical to two competing models of human evolution. According to the multi-regionalist model, modern humans, or Homo sapiens, evolved in several places, with interbreeding pushing a single species down the same evolutionary pathway. Modern populations retained regional characteristics. According to that theory, the Neanderthals are the ancestors of modern Europeans and other Caucasian people, while Homo Erectus populations (update: with Denisovans) in Indonesia were the progenitors of the Aborigines. The extreme form of the rival "out of Africa" model argues for the evolution of Homo sapiens in Africa up to 200,000 years ago. Our ancestors spread across the globe, replacing the descendants of archaic species who left Africa more than a million years ago.

The Neanderthals, who had evolved from Homo heidelbergensis in Europe, were among the casualties. Neanderthals went extinct, perhaps within 10,000 years of the arrival of Homo sapiens on their territory. Multi-regionalism was once the dominant paradigm but the out of Africa model is now ascendant. In recent years, some scholars have adopted an assimilation model that accommodates limited interbreeding between African newcomers and the locals.

The debate first centred on the fossil record, with scholars arguing over the interpretation of specimens claimed by multi-regionalists to be Neanderthal-sapiens intermediates.

In the late 1980s genetics began to have an effect. The first genetics research supported the out of Africa model, but most of the work centred on the maternally inherited DNA from the mitochondria, structures outside cell nuclei that power cells.

Mitochondrial DNA accounts for just a tiny fraction of our DNA, so it does not tell the full story. And much of the first evolutionary genetics research was on present-day human DNA.

Regions of the Neanderthal mitochondrial genome were sequenced in the 1990s. Eventually, the hominins' full mitochondrial genome was sequenced, but the results found no evidence for Neanderthal DNA in the modern human gene pool.

Technological advances, including high-throughput sequencers and new ways to deal with old, degraded DNA, cleared the way to sequencing the entire Neanderthal nuclear genome, a code written in six billion letters. DNA from cell nuclei codes for most traits.

The ambitious Neanderthal Genome Project was launched in 2006 to resolve the row over human origins.

The team extracted DNA from Neanderthal bones from Vindija Cave in northern Croatia. One specimen was about 43,300 years old, with a second dated to about 47,600 years old. The date of the third bone fragment is even older but it is not known by how much.

The scientists compared Neanderthal DNA with that of the modern chimpanzee and five present-day modern humans: one from Papua New Guinea, two from Africa, one from China and one from France. [The Frenchy was probably a Moroccan quadroon with a turban on its head and a Koran in its pocket ~ Cailen.]

They were surprised to find evidence of "gene flow" from Neanderthals to present-day humans outside Africa. All the non-African populations had the same amount of Neanderthal blood. The simplest explanation, the team argues, is that the encounters happened before the non-African modern human populations diverged and at the gateway, perhaps in the Middle East, through which our species passed as it left the African homeland.

Estimates put the date of the exodus between 50,000 and 70,000 years ago, with modern humans reaching Australia at least 50,000 years ago and Europe about 40,000 years ago.

Neanderthal Genome Project team member David Reich, a population geneticist at Harvard University medical school, says the data refutes "the strong view" of the out of Africa model in which there was "absolutely no mixture" between Neanderthals and the African migrants.

"But the overall view of the out of Africa migration is strongly supported by our data," he says.

The "great majority" of the ancestry of populations outside Africa today is from Africa.

"There's only a small percentage that seems to come from this other, Neanderthal-related source."

However, it is unclear how much interbreeding it would take to scuttle the Africanist model.

Meanwhile, the failure of the analysis to pick up a stronger signal in the European [or perhaps quadroon ~ Cailen] Homo sapiens sampled than in the other non-Africans seemingly weakens the multi-regionalist case.

However, the lead author of the Science paper, Richard Green, now of the University of California, Santa Cruz, says that the team could not rule out "a smaller and later contribution just in Europe".

Leading multiregionalist theorist Milford Wolpoff, of the University of Michigan, says his model has been misrepresented in the past.

"In our original statement, we said that most evolution until the Late Pleistocene was at the centre - Africa - with genes under selection dispersing outwards," he says.

"The difference between us and the African replacement theory is not over Africa. It is over replacement.

"Either there was a speciation or there was not, and the Neanderthal genetic evidence joins anatomical evidence to show there was not.

"It's that simple, but politics has not gone away, and now lots of folks are claiming that they never denied intermixture. That's politics, not science.

"The fact is that no form of species replacement can be correct now, and evolution within a species, without speciation, is called multi-regional evolution."

Leading out of Africa theorist Colin Groves, a primatologist at the Australian National University, disputes Wolpoff's reading of the European fossil record.

The Neanderthal genome work is continuing, but Groves thinks the last word in the wider debate may come from Australia. He and Flinders University palaeoanthropologist Michael Westaway last year published results from the biggest anatomical study of fossil skulls from Australia, Indonesia Africa and the Middle East.

The research, led by Westaway and published in Archaeology in Oceania, supported the out of Africa theory, finding no evidence in the ancestral Australians of characteristics inherited from Indonesian Homo erectus. "The anatomical features of Homo sapiens are sharply distinct from those of the populations it displaced outside Africa," Groves says.

A MEMBER of the Ballarat Jewish community has accepted Liberal candidate for Ballarat Mark Banwell's apology for using the word "holocaust" in an inappropriate way.

Ballarat Hebrew Congregation honorary secretary Bernie Stone said Mr Banwell's choice of word was "unfortunate".

Former soldier Mr Banwell made the slip on local television last night, when he said the Federal Government's Building the Education Revolution scheme "would be a holocaust" in a year's time.

"He's obviously tried to look for a word with some clout, but he's chosen the wrong word," Mr Stone said.

Mr Stone said he could not speak for all Jewish people but, personally, he appreciated Mr Banwell's attempt to make amends.

In a statement, Mr Banwell apologised for using "a most inappropriate characterisation".

"As has been clearly established there has been massive waste and mismanagement in this program," he said.

"In describing it I used a most inappropriate characterisation. I apologise for doing so. It was not my intention to cause offence, but freely acknowledge I have done so."

Mr Banwell's opponent, Ballarat Labor MP Catherine King, said the gaffe showed "an extraordinary lack of judgment".

``I understand that inexperienced and new candidates do make slips, and I accept that he has apologised to the community,'' she said.

``It's a matter for Tony Abbott how he wishes to deal with his candidate here in Ballarat.''

RIOTERS exchanged gunfire with police in the French Alpine city of Grenoble, setting fire to shops and cars after police shot dead a man [sand nigger] accused of robbing a casino.

Youths torched between 50 and 60 cars in the southeastern city nestled in the French Alps, as well as construction equipment and two shops, while police said they made five arrests.

Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux showed up at the scene later, vowing to quickly restore order to the working class La Villeneuve neighbourhood.

The rioting started after a memorial service for 27-year-old Karim Boudouda, who had died 24 hours earlier in a shootout with police after allegedly holding up the Uriage-les-Bains casino near Grenoble.

Shortly before midnight, a group of around 30 youths armed with baseball bats and iron bars attacked a tram in Boudouda's La Villeneuve district and forced the passengers to get out.

Police intervened to protect the passengers, and the youths began torching vehicles and attacking police who responded with tear gas.

About 2.30am (10.30am AEST), a youth emerged at the front of the rioters and fired a shot at police, who returned fire four times, police spokeswoman Brigette Jullien said.

Nobody was injured in the riots, said police, who arrested two men aged 18 and 20 for setting fire to vehicles and three more for attempted looting of shops.

By the afternoon while the neighbourhood appeared calm, Mr Hortefeux, with a horde of media in tow, made a lightning 15-minute tour of La Villeneuve and promised quick action by the authorities.

"When I say quick, I mean immediately, that's how we are going to re-establish public order and the authority of the State," he told an instant press briefing outside the police headquarters.

"I've asked the prefect to use all means to secure the neighbourhood ... for now and for as much time as necessary for calm to return,"he said.

"There is a simple and clear reality in this country: there's no future for hoodlums and delinquents because in the end the public authority always wins."

Some local residents listening to the interior minister, who also promised to crack down on drug and arms trafficking, were not totally reassured.

"I don't know what to think" of his visit, a florist in the neighbourhood said.

"On the one hand it's reassuring, on the other it can only stir up the hatred of some people," he said, adding that he wanted to empty his florist shop in case there were more incidents.

"The minister's visit only risks aggravating the situation," said another resident who also asked not to be named.

According to police union SGP-FO, violence has been on the rise in recent months in Grenoble.

A book called "The White Man's Bible" is racist but is not violently inflammatory and must be returned to the prisoner from whom it was seized in 1986, a federal judge in San Francisco has said.

The book was confiscated from the maximum-security cell of inmate Norman Willhoite in November 1986 by T.V. Arzatee, a San Quintin guard. At the time, the guard said the book could provoke racial violence.

In a ruling released yesterday, U.S. District Judge Fern Smith said the state failed to prove that the book presented any imminent danger. The issue was before Smith on a petition by Willhoite for the book's return.

"Although the book clearly advocates racial purity, it does not advocate direct acts of violence or any illegal activity," Smith said. "Further, even though advocating racism, the book is not sufficiently racially inflammatory to be reasonably likely to cause violence at the prison."

Excerpts of the book in court files refer to blacks as "subhuman" and said of whites, "We must organize and expand until we embrace the planet Earth. Let the Jews and mud races take note." It also calls for hanging white "race traitors." The author is identified as Ben Klassen of the Church of the Creator.

EVERY Australian school student would be taught positive things about Islam and Muslims and that Australia was a racist country, under a plan being proposed by an education think tank.

The plan is outlined in a booklet Learning From One Another: Bringing Muslim Perspectives into Australian Schools published this week by the Australian Curriculum Studies Association and The University of Melbourne's Centre for Excellence in Islamic Studies.

It says there is a "degree of prejudice and ignorance about Islam and Muslims" and Australian students must be taught to embrace difference and diversity.

The booklet refers to al-Qa'ida as "a famous name" synonymous with the traditionalist movement in Islam, with no reference to terrorism.

Its authors are offering free seminars to teachers.

IN 1990, Nelson Mandela told Bob Hawke in Australia: "I want you to know, Bob, that I am here today, at this time, because of you."

The former South African president, who had recently been released from prison, uttered those words before his ascent to his country's top job.

Mandela's comment is contained in Blanche d'Alpuget's new book, Hawke, The Prime Minister, a 100,000-word-plus inside account of how Hawke ran Australia from 1983 to 1991.

D'Alpuget quotes Hawke's former chief adviser as head of the Prime Minister's Department, Mike Codd, as saying that Hawke played a significant role in the collapse of apartheid in South Africa.

She documents how Hawke devised the idea of attacking the regime through the global banks that funded its economy, won support from a small group of Commonwealth leaders and proposed that Jim Wolfensohn, later head of the World Bank, orchestrate the campaign.

At one point fearing Wolfensohn might be an assassination target by South Africa, Codd was despatched to New York to brief the banker because "he needed to get his head around just what he had let himself in for".

Codd told d'Alpuget: "The impact was just as we expected on the South African business community. None of us was there in South Africa, so we can't say for sure that this was why apartheid came down, or exactly what percentage of the reason it was, but there's no doubt in my mind that it was very, very significant.

"It was the most powerful individual weapon that had been used against South Africa. Bob had a good idea and he won other people over to it, he got the right group committed."

D'Alpuget quotes South African finance minister Barend du Plessis in 1990 as saying disinvestment was "the dagger that finally immobilised apartheid".

While Wolfensohn had offered to personally approach some of the US banks, future Treasury secretary Tony Cole, then working for Codd, dealt with the European banks, particularly the German ones, which were the biggest lenders to apartheid.

The South African story is one of a series of revelations in d'Alpuget's book, based upon interviews with former Hawke staffers and senior public service advisers. She says in the preface that only when the manuscript was "almost finished" did she seek Hawke's views.

D'Alpuget married Hawke in 1995 after what she describes as an "on and off" relationship of almost 20 years.



If Hawke is alive after the fall of the Australian JOG, he will be hanged as a war criminal for his part in the downfall of White South Africa and the consequent genocide of its people.

VOTERS in Australia and Britain have had their fill of out-of-control multiculturalism.

AT first blush, Julia Gillard's volte-face over immigration would seem to be as unlikely as Osama bin Laden singing the Star Spangled Banner or Richard Dawkins taking holy orders.

Here is a politician with a solid pedigree on the "anti-racist" Left rejecting former prime minister Kevin Rudd's call for a "Big Australia" formed by continuing large-scale immigration.

Instead, Gillard has said she understands the anxieties of folk in western Sydney, western Melbourne or the Gold Coast growth corridor in Queensland.

As for the boats of asylum-seekers, Gillard has made clear she wants to be even more effective in stopping them in order to protect "our sanctuary" and "the Australian way".

In other words, Gillard is signalling that she sympathises with the concern that large-scale immigration and multiculturalism are threatening Australia's core values and identity, a position the Left denounces as bigotry.

Consequently, Gillard's remarks have produced predictable cries of "racism" and "dog-whistling". So why has the new Labor leader ventured into this particular cultural minefield? The explanation is that something tumultuous is happening, not just in Australia but in Britain too, something so unusual that people are stumbling around in a state of stunned disorientation.

It is that politicians are at last actually taking seriously what their electorates are saying to them about immigration and multiculturalism. This is that they will no longer put up with a policy which threatens to destroy their country's values and way of life, and will vote accordingly.

In Britain even more than in Australia - where at least John Howard or Tony Abbott have tackled such issues - race and culture have long been totally taboo. No debate has been possible about whether mass immigration might be a bad thing for communities or the country as a whole.

Even to question this has been to invite instant denunciation as a racist from the dominant left-wing intelligentsia, for whom anti-racism has long been their signature creed.

The Conservative leader and now Prime Minister, David Cameron, who is driven by the need to bury the label of "the nasty party" that was hung round the Tories' neck, was accordingly too nervous even to mention immigration during the recent election campaign, even though it was at the very top of the list of voters' concerns.

But Cameron didn't win the election, and is now forced to govern in a coalition with the left-wing LibDems. His failure to talk about immigration is said to be the reason why he failed to win an election that was thought impossible for him to lose.

Nothing concentrates the political mind so well as the spectre of defeat. And so now in both Britain and Australia a political sea change is taking place.

In both countries, voters are stating unequivocally that they have seen through all the spin about multiculturalism, all the false arguments about the alleged economic advantages of mass immigration, all the bullying and name-calling about racism.

They look at their neighbourhoods and realise that their culture and national identity are being replaced by something entirely new. No one has ever asked them for their consent to this. And they are simply not going to take it any more.

In Britain, the public services are buckling under the sheer weight of the numbers coming into the country.

More explosive is the cultural transformation, particularly by the large influx and expansion of Muslims who, rather than accommodating themselves to British society, expect it to accommodate itself to them.

So Britain is being steadily Islamised, with more than 1700 mosques, the development of a parallel jurisdiction of sharia law in Muslim enclaves, banks offering sharia financing, extremists given free rein on campuses and relentless pressure to suppress and censor any criticism of Islam or the Muslim community.

In parts of Australia too there are similar worries about the growth of the Muslim community, the pressure not to criticise any aggression it may display and the simultaneous onslaught upon Australian values by the likes of [Muslim cleric] Sheik Hilaly.

Listening to such concerns pays electoral dividends, as shown by Abbott, who has made such headway by defending the traditional values and national integrity of Australia as an entirely justifiable and moral position.

So Gillard is now humming the same tune, saying she sympathises with voters' desire for strong management of Australia's borders, and pledging "sustainable population" increase with the "right kind of immigrant".

A similar political convulsion is occurring in Britain. The Conservative Home Secretary, Theresa May, has promised to put a cap on immigration, a pledge that was in the Conservative manifesto but rarely mentioned during the election campaign.

Even more striking is the abrupt change of tune among several contenders for the leadership of the defeated British Labour Party. While front-runner David Miliband is sticking with its open-door immigration policy, his younger brother Ed has said "we never had an answer for the people who were worried about it".

Former Labour health secretary Andy Burnham claims the party has been "in denial" about the issue, which was "the biggest doorstep issue in constituencies where Labour lost".

Most jaw-dropping of all, former education secretary and hard man of the Left Ed Balls has said high levels of immigration under Labour had affected the pay and conditions of "too many people", and has called for better protection for British workers if the European Union expands any further.

Such death-bed conversions are of course driven by cynical political considerations. Nevertheless, they are levering open an ideological fixation which has not just sunk democratic politics into disrepute but driven culture and morality in both Britain and Australia off the rails altogether.

For the doctrines of anti-racism and multiculturalism have not ended intolerance, prejudice or discrimination. They have instead institutionalised reverse discrimination and up-ended truth, morality and justice.

Following the Marxist doctrine that prejudice is restricted to those with power, they have given Third-World ethnic minorities special protection from rules or conventions that apply to everyone else.

They have also served to falsify the history of both Britain and Australia in the minds of countless thousands of young people, who are taught propaganda based on a false or distorted story of national oppression and shame.

Multiculturalism threatens to undermine societies, by removing the cultural glue that binds all citizens together and balkanising the country into interest groups fighting for supremacy.

Once upon a time, the need to have strong borders and endorse a historic cultural identity were axiomatic elements of citizenship and national survival.

But mass immigration and multiculturalism are predicated on what is called "transnationalism", the belief that the nation is the source of all the ills of the world and must be replaced by supranational institutions and cultural identities.

This is precisely what -at a visceral level - the people of both Australia and Britain understand and are refusing to accept.

And at last, in both Australia and Britain, politicians are being forced to listen.

In an overview of government policies, global trends and personal accounts, the campaign group argues that counter-terrorism efforts and economic marginalisation are increasingly being associated with religion, not ethnicity.

"Religious intolerance is the new racism," said Mark Lattimer, director of Minority Rights Group International.

"Many communities that have faced racial discrimination for decades are now being targeted because of their religion."

The report notes that Muslims have been increasingly targeted by authorities in Europe and the United States as part of counter-terrorism measures.

This is evident from police stop-and-searches to the US restrictions introduced after a Nigerian Muslim was accused of trying to bomb an airliner on Christmas Day 2009.

The restrictions applied to citizens from 14 countries - 13 of them predominantly Muslim, the report notes.

It also highlighted how religious groups can be the focus of nationalist campaigns, such as in Switzerland, where voters chose in a referendum to ban the construction of new minarets after a campaign by a far-right party.

Meanwhile in Iraq and Pakistan, which are on the frontline of the so-called "war on terror", attacks against religious minorities have also escalated in recent years, the report said.

It notes religious groups in Iraq such as the Christians, Mandaeans, Baha'i and Yezidis have become targets of violence since the US-led invasion in 2003.

And in Pakistan, the Taliban have targeted Christians for attack through killings, torture, forcible conversions and burning of churches, it says.

Other discrimination occurs through government registration schemes for religious groups, a practice used in Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan since 2001.

In Egypt, all identification papers must list religious affiliation - but the choice is restricted to Islam, Christianity and Judaism. This means the Baha'i cannot get ID papers, and therefore cannot work or access healthcare.



It should be able to go without saying but some need reminded that religious intolerance is something every Creator has and will experience. In the last fourteen years of Creativity, Creators have learned to ignore external influences and worry more about watching the knives headed for their back. Think about what could cause such a change in behaviour and why anyone would encourage it.

Introduction

The War of Independence plays such an important part in American popular ideology that references to it are especially prone to exaggeration and oversimplification. And two uncomfortable truths about it - the fact that it was a civil war (perhaps 100,000 loyalists fled abroad at its end), and that it was also a world war (the Americans could scarcely have won without French help) - are often forgotten.

Here, however, I have done my best to describe this long and complex war in terms that people will find readily comprehensible, but that avoid some of the Hollywood-style simplifications and inaccuracies that have gained so much currency over the years.

And although as I write this piece, the second Gulf War has only recently ended, and although the Vietnam analogy comes to mind often, I have deliberately avoided reflecting too much on recent American politics. No: what I have tried to do is to give readers the most balanced and objective view I can of a war that has done much, as my television screen reminds me as I write, to shape the world we live in.

Breaking the connection

In one sense it was always a war between cousins, and the long and tangled history of the 'special relationship' between Britain and America, as well as the notion of the unbreakable connections between both, bear witness to a link that at one time was very close indeed.

The war often known in Europe as the Seven Years War was known in North America as the French and Indian War. It involved several countries, with France and Britain on opposing sides, and North America was one of its many theatres of operations. It was ended by the 1763 Treaty of Paris, by which the French ceded territory to Britain in North America and elsewhere. In addition to this success, James Wolfe's victory at Quebec had helped secure Canada for the British Crown, and the 13 British colonies further south seemed safe from any threat that might once have been posed by the French and their Native American allies. Britain and her American colonies at this time seemed very close, both culturally and politically - and it is remarkable how this rosy picture changed so quickly.

In part the deterioration of relations between Britain and her American colonies - which eventually led to the War of Independence - stemmed from a logical British attempt to make the colonies contribute more to the cost of their own defence. It was also partly the result of the desire of some successful merchants in the colonies to break free of controls imposed by the pro-British elite, and from British political miscalculations that saw foreign policy oscillate between harshness and surrender. Another factor was the work of radical politicians and propagandists - such as Sam Adams and Paul Revere - who envisaged a break with Britain when many of their countrymen still hoped that it might be avoided.

The descent into armed conflict between patriot (anti-British) and loyalist (pro-British) sympathisers was gradual. Events like the Boston 'Massacre' of 1770, when British troops fired on a mob that had attacked a British sentry outside Boston's State House, and the Boston 'tea-party' of 1773, when British-taxed tea was thrown into the harbour, marked the downward steps. Less obvious was the take-over of the colonial militias - which had initially been formed to provide local defence against the French and the Native Americans - by officers in sympathy the the American patrios/rebels, rather than by those in sympathy with pro-British loyalists/Tories.

As all these elements of conflict came into play, the British commander in chief in North America was Lieutenant General Thomas Gage. He had long experience of the American continent, and had a beautiful and intelligent American wife, but he was under pressure from London to lance what seemed to be a painful boil.

The outset of war

In April 1775 Gage sent a small force to seize patriot militia weapons and gunpowder at Concord, not far from Boston, but his soldiers became involved in a brief firefight on Lexington Green on their way there. This event was reported far and wide, and the first shot fired there has ever since been described as 'the shot heard round the world'.

There was a bigger clash at Concord, and then a fighting retreat, in which the British force was roughly handled. The militias then closed in and blockaded the British in Boston. Although newly arrived British reinforcements, under General William Howe, who was soon to replace Gage, won a costly battle at Bunker Hill, outside Boston, they could not break the siege.

In mid-1775, patriot representatives of the 13 colonies of America, meeting in Philadelphia as the Continental Congress, appointed George Washington, a well-to-do Virginia landowner, as commander in chief of its military forces. Washington, who thought militias fundamentally unreliable, set about raising a regular force, the Continental Army, and as the initial skirmishes between the patriots on the one hand and the British and their loyalist supporters on the other turned into a full-scale war, both sides were to use a mixture of regular troops, militias and other irregulars.

Washington's early fortunes were mixed. He forced the British to evacuate Boston by sea, when heavy guns taken from Fort Ticonderoga in upper New York State were hauled by patriot forces across a winter landscape and emplaced so as to fire down onto the city. But a patriot attempt to invade Canada failed miserably.

Washington could also do nothing to deny the enormous advantage that command of the sea conferred on the British. In the summer of 1776 General Howe, his army of 30,000 men carried in ships commanded by his brother Richard, landed near New York and duly captured the city, inflicting several sharp defeats on the patriots.

The widening theatre of war

Washington, fearing that his cause would inevitably collapse as short-term enlistment into the Continental Army expired, launched a risky attack on the little town of Trenton, held by a brigade of Hessians (German troops in British service) on Boxing Day 1776. He won this battle, and although the victory was small in tactical terms, it had a wider strategic impact, showing that the patriots were still in the fight.

In 1777 Howe took Philadelphia for the British, and had rather the better of fighting in the central theatre of war. But an ill-judged British attempt to invade from Canada, thrusting down the Hudson Valley towards New York and cutting off the rebellious New England, went badly wrong, and Lieutenant General John Burgoyne was forced to surrender with his entire army at Saratoga in October.

Defeat at Saratoga was not necessarily a military cataclysm for the British, but it encouraged the French, anxious to obtain revenge for the humiliations of the Seven Years War, to go beyond the covert support they had offered the patriots thus far, and join the war. Spain and Holland were to follow suit, and in 1780 a wider League of Armed Neutrality was formed, to resist British attempts to stop and search merchant shipping. The American war was now a world war, which meant that British resources could no longer be concentrated on North America alone.

Saratoga did not improve Washington's position instantly, however, and his army spent a miserable winter at Valley Forge. But in the spring of 1777 Howe's replacement, General Sir Henry Clinton, withdrew from Philadelphia (American Continentals fought creditably when they took on his rearguard at Monmouth), retaining New York as his base in the central theatre, and switching his main effort elsewhere.

There had already been fighting in the south. The British had failed in an attack on Charleston, although from Savannah they had repulsed a powerful French force, sent by sea from the West Indies. In spring 1780, Clinton reopened the campaign in the south, moving by sea to take Charleston in the biggest British victory of the war. He then returned to New York and left Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis in charge.

Formidable adversaries

In August Major General Horatio Gates, patriot victor of Saratoga, was roundly defeated by Cornwallis at Camden. British regulars now had an impressive combination of discipline and tactical skill, which made them formidable adversaries even in the difficult country of the south. But their loyalist allies fared less well. That September Major Patrick Ferguson, with a well-organised loyalist force was routed at King's Mountain, and in January the following year the dashing and controversial Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton ('Bloody Ban' to his enemies) was badly beaten by the unconventional Daniel Morgan at Cowpens.

Cornwallis, although his army was now in tatters, was still a doughty adversary. In March 1781 he won a magnificent victory over Nathanael Greene, Gates's successor, at Guilford Courthouse. But like so many British victories it was won at disproportionate cost, and Cornwallis could not mint strategic currency from tactical success. Exhausted, he fell back towards the coast, and eventually established himself at Yorktown, to the south of the Chesapeake Bay, where he hoped to be supplied or, if the worst came to the worst, to be evacuated, by sea.

In the New York area there had been no developments of real military significance. However, the ambitious Major General Benedict Arnold, one of the patriot heroes of Saratoga, had become embittered, and entered into secret negotiations with Clinton to betray the fort at West Point on the Hudson.

The scheme failed at the last moment and Arnold escaped to enter British service: Major John André, Clinton's adjutant-general, was captured in civilian clothes carrying letters to Arnold, and Washington had him hanged. Washington was badly rattled by the Arnold affair, and he still faced unrest amongst his tired soldiers. And although a substantial French force under the Comte de Rochambeau had landed in Rhode Island, it was hard to see how the war could be won.

Turning point

In the spring of 1781 the picture changed at a stroke. Admiral de Grasse, commanding the French fleet in the West Indies, made a bold attempt to secure control of the sea off the Chesapeake Bay.

Immediately Washington heard what was afoot, he moved south with the bulk of his army and Rochambeau's Frenchmen. The British could not prevent de Grasse from entering the Chesapeake Bay, and when they brought him to battle in early September the result was a tactical draw but a strategic victory for the French.

They still controlled the bay, and Cornwallis was still trapped in Yorktown. Another French squadron brought in heavy guns from Rhode Island, and the French and Americans mounted a formal siege against the outnumbered and ill-provisioned Cornwallis. Although Clinton and the admirals mounted a relief expedition, it arrived too late: Cornwallis had surrendered. When the British prime minister, Lord North, so firmly associated with Britain's war effort, heard the news, he staggered as if shot and cried out: 'Oh God! It is all over'.

Although the war was not formally ended until the Treaty of Versailles in 1783, it was clear after Yorktown that the British, with their world-wide preoccupations, no longer had any realistic chance of winning. There had, however, been some moments that might have led to victory.

Howe, probably hoping to reach a compromise settlement with Washington, showed little killer instinct in his New York campaign. But in this sort of war the British were in any case eventually likely to lose, unless they could strike the patriots such a telling blow as to win the war at a stroke, and it is hard to see how this could have been achieved.

Conversely, the patriots had always been likely to win, provided they struggled on and avoided outright defeat. It is unlikely that George Washington would much like being compared with General Vo Nguyen Giap, who commanded the North Vietnamese army in the Vietnam war. But both shared the same recognition that a militarily-superior opponent with worldwide preoccupations can be beaten by an opponent who avoids outright defeat and remains in the field. It is an old truth, and 21st-century strategists, whatever their political differences, should be well aware of it.

CHRISTIAN Democratic Party MP Fred Nile has succeeded in introducing a bill to ban the wearing of the burqa in the NSW Upper House.

Mr Nile introduced his private member's bill, seeking to ban the wearing of the burqa and other face veils in public, shortly after 8pm (AEST) yesterday.

Last month, a debate on the same bill was voted down by the NSW Upper House.

Greens MP John Kaye said only the four Greens MPs and Family First MP Gordon Moyes voted against introducing the bill yesterday.

"Last month the Coalition and the Government did the right thing and said no, they would not allow the Upper House to be home to this kind of racist dog whistling," Mr Kaye said yesterday. "This time they caved in."

Mr Kaye said Mr Nile's bill has opened the door to a "dangerous and divisive attack on one of NSW's communities".


"Letting loose the ugly bigotry that lies behind this bill will only encourage hostility to the Muslim community," he said.

"While no woman should be forced to wear a burqa or any other form of clothing, this absurd bill will do nothing to enhance the rights of women."

Mr Nile has denied the bill is racist, saying his concern lay with issues of security and women's rights.

The bill has been adjourned until September 2010.

POLISH authorities have arrested at the request of Germany a suspected Mossad agent thought to have played a role in the Dubai assassination of a Hamas commander.

"He was arrested in Warsaw and is suspected of being involved in illegally obtaining a (German) passport," a spokesman for German federal prosecution said, confirming a report in German magazine Der Spiegel.

The game involved some students playing the role of Nazis, who blindfolded and dropped off other students playing Jews who must find their way back to the campus, said Sherry Johnstone, assistant superintendent of personnel for Desert Sands Unified School District.

It was not immediately clear exactly how losing players were punished, she said.

Seven seniors at La Quinta High School could be suspended or barred from graduation, among other measures, Ms Johnstone said.

"This is appalling to us," she said.

"We want our students to understand the horror of a title like this."

The district started investigating a week ago after students reported the game to administrators.

The game was promoted online, attracting about 40 students. Seven showed up to play one evening in the campus parking lot, Ms Johnstone said.

The district is working with Jewish organisations to review its tolerance curriculum. A voluntary tolerance program will be held after school.

The matter also has been referred to La Quinta police. A call to the Police Department was not immediately returned.

6.0 ANTISEMITIC ORGANISATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS

6.1 Introduction
Australia continues to be host to a plethora of organisations which promote antisemitism, including some who have this as their primary purpose. The groups vary greatly in their membership, their activities and their target audiences.

Amongst the small group of individuals who, figuratively and literally, wave the flag for US-based neo-Nazi groups including the Ku Klux Klan, the Church of the Creator and White Aryan Resistance, transference of allegiance takes place at a pace which seems to be determined by the intent of gaining optimal media interest.

6.9 Extremist "Churches"
The Church of the Creator variety of anti-Semitic pseudo-Christian is most publicly represented in Australia by Creativity South Australia. Examples of the views of this group included Cailen Cambuel on The Church of Creativity S.A. site writing "Doctor Frederick Toben of the Adelaide Institute http://adelaideinstitute.org has been sentenced to three months prison for refusing to kowtow to Jewish supremacist "holocaust" dogma, in which six million Jews were supposedly murdered by various means including cyanide gas, by the Nazis during WWII. He has also won a fourteen day reprieve to file papers for an appeal.", adding "In Europe, Canada and Australia, Jewish supremacist groups have convinced lawmakers and judges that those who refuse to believe the myth that the German people deliberately caused the deaths of six million Jews during WWII, and express their lack of belief in public are automatically guilty of a crime in a similar vein to murder. Believe you me, this is not an overstatement. Jewish supremacist groups often speak of people who "deny the Holocaust" as horrific latter day monsters who intend to exterminate the Jewish race at the first opportunity." (13/5/09). Cailen Cambuel wrote a letter to the Adelaide Advertiser, which he published on the Church of Creativity S.A. website, in which he wrote "In this case, Dr Toben's conviction will only make matters worse for the Holocaust Believers, as those that are labelled Holocaust Deniers are persecuted and continue to grow in number of influence. Politically correct inquisitions not withstanding, unverified historical events are faith based at best and anything based purely on faith will eventually fail. Therefore, the choice for the Holocaust Believers is to either allow an investigation which will result in the unadultured truth being revealed, or deny the possibility of any investigation which can only result in an eventual reversal of condemnation where the believer will be ridiculed for his/her faith." The Australian chapter of the World Church of the Creator, which had no more than three identifiable supporters, has established a presence on the Internet as well as taking part in a minor way in public debate in online newsgroups and in the Queensland regional media. The World Church of the Creator Australia refers on its homepage to "the parasitic Jews". "Shaun Simmonds" of the WCOTC urged "creators" to take action in Australia in the battle to "re-take" Australia from Jews and "non-whites", in an internet discussion group.

FORMER One Nation leader Pauline Hanson's Queensland home remains on the market, but not for everyone.

Muslim buyers, for example, aren't welcome.

Ms Hanson, who has put up for sale her million-dollar property in Coleyville, southwest of Brisbane, announced she was moving to Britain earlier this year.

Her hardline views on race sparked a national debate over immigration policy and Aboriginal disadvantage from the time she entered parliament in 1996 at the same election that made John Howard prime minister. [Anyone who denies Abos are racially disadvantaged and demands that their special JOG privileges be cancelled and made available to all Australians based on their economic status rather than race, is a "racist" and declared "unAustralian." While taking the Channel 7's Sunrise program on a recent tour of her home, she said she would not allow certain members of the Australian community to purchase the property.

Asked if Asians were welcome to express interest in the property, Ms Hanson said she would not sell the home to an Asian who lived overseas.

But she had no problem with selling the property to "an Australian who is of Asian background". [Hanson is a nationalist who just happens to be White, not a racialist or even a White Nationalist as some claim her to be, nevermind racist. Cailen.]

"No problems whatsoever," she said.

Asked if she would be prepared to sell the property to a Muslim, she said no.

"Because I don't believe that they are compatible with our way of life, our culture.

"And I think we are going to have problems with them in this country further down the track, so I have no intention of selling my home to a Muslim."

Ms Hanson's interview with Sunrise was broadcast this morning.
