Here we have another great Boer general cast in bronze. Christiaan Rudolf de Wet (7 October 1854 - 3 February 1922) was a Boer general, "rebel" leader and politician. He came to be regarded more and more as the most formidable leader of the Boers in their guerrilla warfare. De Wet was one of the leaders in the Maritz Rebellion  which broke out in 1914.

Alter Weiner

Alter was only 15 years old when the evil Nazi's captured him, and forced him into slave labor at Blechhammer. The Nazi's gave Alter only bread made from flour and sawdust to eat for the next 4 years. Here he met his brother that got ten years older in one year. He also got whipped 15 strokes for trying to bribe a Nazi, but got up the next morning to work. He was then moved to the Brande work camp where he was forced to shower all night. Miraculously, Alter survived 5 concentration camps to tell his sad tale to spellbound students.

Doctors who examined him shortly after the "liberation" told him they didn't expect him to live for more than a few years, but here he is, 82 years old - it must have been a miracle. Alter now wants you to buy his book where you can read about his miracle.

'Wit Wolwe' Killer Freed On Parole

Pretoria - The North Gauteng High Court has ordered the immediate release of double killer Pieter Groenewald, seven years after he was jailed for 20 years for a roadside attack on three men. He was convicted in 2003 of the May 1990 execution-style murders of Simon Koba and Prince Makena on the road between Cullinan and Mamelodi.

He'd asked them if they knew who the "Wit Wolwe" ("White Wolf" - a militant rightwing group in the Apartheid era) were before he killed them. Groenewald, son of retired SA Defence Force general Tienie Groenewald, was also found guilty of the attempted murder of Xafier Lekgoate in the same incident. Groenewald was on the run for more than ten years before he was arrested and tried for the murders.

During the trial, he claimed he had acted in self-defence because he feared he was being attacked by Umkhonto we Sizwe operatives.[anc commie "army"] Acting Judge Roelof du Plessis on Wednesday dismissed the Minister and Commissioner of Correctional Service's application for leave to appeal against his November 2009 ruling that Groenewald be released on parole. Groenewald remained in custody while the application for leave to appeal was pending, but the Judge on Wednesday ruled that he now be released, despite any further possible appeal procedures.

Groenewald became eligible for parole in September last year after serving a third of his sentence. He applied to the court for his release after the Parole Board turned down his application, saying he must wait until October this year to apply again. He claimed he did not have a fair hearing because all of the relevant documents and reports - over which he had no control - were never placed before the Board.

The correctional services department opposed his bid for release, but never filed any answering papers and was not present when the application was heard in court. The judge said he regarded their actions as "totally deplorable, reprehensible and completely unacceptable". It was clear that they had no regard for the rights of prisoners and the authority, status and powers of the court, du Plessis said.

He said there was no explanation why all the necessary information and reports were not placed before the Parole Board. Neither was there an explanation why Groenewald should remain further incarcerated because Correctional Services could or did not want to do its work properly. The judge concluded that a referral to the Parole Board would simply lead to a further extension of the parole application and the unfair treatment of Groenewald.

"It is extremely disconcerting that the respondents are apparently trying to enforce their own views on the parole procedure, without applying the law, statutory principles and legal principles applicable to matters, nor do they apparently have regard for the constitutional and human rights of prisoners."

Du Plessis said there had been a tendency lately by government institutions that the rights of prisoners should not be held in high esteem. "... There is simply no justification for this. There is no reason why that should be so and it is not clear why the respondents have this particular view regarding the matter," the judge said.

Unwanted Tickets a New Headache For World Cup

Hamburg - Demand for tickets for the World Cup in South Africa via national football associations has been low raising fears that not all the more than 3 million available for the tournament will be sold. With the deadline just over for sales from national associations for their teams' group games, it appears most of the allocated tickets will have to be returned to world governing body FIFA.

According to Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung, the German football federation DFB has only had around 1,000 orders for its allocation of 21,000 tickets for the three group games against Australia, Ghana and Serbia.  The English and Dutch associations, which traditionally have large fan followings, have also not managed to sell their contingents. The Dutch, who have sold between 2,000 and 3,000 tickets per group match but had reckoned on up to 10,000, have now asked FIFA to extend the deadline.

Elsewhere it has been the same story, prompting the Sueddeutsche Zeitung to ask : "If the three federations known for fans who like travelling (with their teams) have such problems what does it look like for Paraguay, Serbia or Honduras ?" The DFB would not comment on the ticket numbers. However, in the first of the five ticket sales phases, there were some 25,000 orders from Germany for all the 64 matches in the tournament from June 11 to July 11.

FIFA's third sales phase, which began on December 5, is underway until January 22 when an electronic random draw will take place if demand exceeds supply. According to FIFA at the end of last year there was strong initial demand, with applications reaching the 500,000 mark within the first 10 days of the third phase, of which 386,300 were from South African residents. In the first two phases only 53.6 per cent of the 674,403 sold were in South Africa.

South Africa's 2010 World Cup organizers said this week they were considering over-the-counter ticket sales due to the slow ticket applications for matches featuring the national team and other African countries. Danny Jordaan, head of the local organizing committee, said : "Usually the hosts are the ones who sell most tickets but Bafana Bafana does not even feature in the top 10 and it's a concern". [ ... racisms fault, no doubt]

Jordaan told Talk Radio 702 one reason for the sluggish sales was South Africa's "culture of waiting ... and buying late". [ ... no danny boy ... its SA crime rate] With Jordaan this week again forced to dismiss security concerns, this time following the gun attack on the Togo team at the Africa Cup of Nations, the poor ticket sales are another public relations setback for the organizers. However, it is hoped the next sales phase from February 9 until April 7 will see demand, when sales are on a first-come first-served basis, pick up.

The final sales phase will be from April 15 until the end of the tournament on July 11 at point of sale. South Africa media reports say the cost of tickets and the process on applying online - a facility not widely available to many people -has so far deterred local fans. The Times online wrote that the idea of having to apply for a ticket and then wait weeks to hear if the application has been successful is "a strange and foreign concept to most South African sports fans". [ ... as the majority are blacks]

It was "little surprise" that most South Africans are choosing to wait until the application process is complete, and they can simply go out and buy a ticket on a first-come, first-served basis, it said. Some tickets are being earmarked for free distribution for welfare institutions and clubs, as happened at the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa to help fill the stadiums.

But if sponsors as expected also begin returning large portions of their allocations, it could lead to a "festival of free tickets" at this year's tournament, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung wrote.

Elderly Woman In Serious Condition After Brutal Farm Attack

An elderly woman farmer is in a serious condition in Stutterheim Hospital after being severely assaulted on Wednesday afternoon. Jean McLeod, 79, was attacked as she was entering her farm – situated a few kilometres outside Stutterheim.
According to police information, McLeod arrived home from a shopping outing in Stutterheim. She entered the house with her groceries, neglecting to close the door behind her because her arms were full. When she turned back to lock it, she was accosted and overpowered. She was then allegedly dragged to an old shed on the property and assaulted.

Police spokesman Captain Thozama Solani yesterday confirmed the incident, saying the victim had broken ribs and was taken to hospital in a critical condition. Solani said after McLeod had been beaten, sand was put into her mouth and thrown into her eyes. She was then gagged with masking tape and her legs bound.

The attacker then ransacked the house and drove off in the victim's vehicle. Groceries, paintings, jewellery, and about R500 in cash was stolen from the house. McLeod managed to free herself and crawled to the house to call police. The vehicle stolen from McLeod were found on the road to Cathcart. "Apparently the driver lost control and it veered off the road," Solani said.

The attacker has not been found. Solani said McLeod had identified the attacker as "someone who used to come to collect old stuff like wire from the farm for his personal use". [ ... when are Whites going to learn to stop helping these retards ?] Yesterday, neighbouring farmers were shocked to hear about the attack on McLeod.

"This is news to us. We are her neighbours, but we never heard anything about the incident," said one woman, who asked that her name not be published. "The only headache we have had here is the problem of stock theft, but police are working hard on that together with the community. This is very bad. We really condemn crime in the farming areas, especially attacks on vulnerable, elderly people," said Solani.
