LONDON Mayor Sadiq Khan's his new violent crime plan has been savaged by a rival member of the capital's assembly, who claims it is a poor and late attempt at copying his Tory policies.

Labour's Sadiq Khan warned today the surge in violent crime in the capital will not be solved "overnight", as he unveiled a plan to focus on the bloodshed as a public health issue.

Echoing an approach successfully used in Scotland, the scheme involves a new unit being set up, including staff from health, police and local government agencies to divert young people away from crime, with initial funding of £500,000.

There have been 100 killings in the capital so far this year, with a third of the victims aged 16 to 24, and three in five of the deaths being stabbings.

Conservative assembly member Andrew Boff, who plans to stand against Mr Khan in the next mayoral election in 2020, said the new plan was too little too late and had copied his own proposals.

He said: "It has been thought up in desperation and he is basically copying what I have have been saying for a long time. It's all already been spelled out in my manifesto for the 2020 mayoral election.

"I'm pleased he is finally taken action but he is a bit late to the game. Along with most other Londoners, I think he has lost control of violent crime in the capital. He has been too keen to put out press releases but slow to make decisions."

Mr Boff's previously published manifesto states that London has "a problem with violent crime", and the mayor "has been slow to respond, weak on action and is intent on blaming everybody else but himself".

He pledged to establish a London Violence Reduction Commission to help bring together the police, city hall, councils, the NHS and the public sector to stamp out gang violence from the capital, stressing that this aped a similar Scottish Government approach.


His manifesto added: "I will chair the commission, which will meet every month. It will focus on disrupting gang activities using higher-profile policing, increasing stop and search and other detection methods to remove knives and guns from circulation. We'll also use innovative methods of engaging with gang members, let them know they are being watched and offer them viable exit routes out of gang life and back into society."

Mr Khan's office was approached by express.co.uk about Mr Boff's claims.

In a statement the Mayor said: "I want to be honest with Londoners that the work of the Violence Reduction Unit will not deliver results overnight. The causes of violent crime are many years in the making and the solutions will take time.

"That's why our new approach is focusing over the long term. This unit is not a substitute for the investment our public services need if London is to significantly cut levels of violent crime."

Mr Boff spoke to LBC's Nick Ferrari about the spate of violent attacks in London back in August.

Speaking on the show, he said: "What we've got to recognise is that this is a public health emergency. It's getting worse and worse.

"We had two shootings in broad daylight yesterday in Rayners Lane. This is not something that the mayor can sit down and theorise about, he [the mayor] needs to take action now, and he isn't."

Police are also cracking down on the bloodshed, with the Violent Crime Taskforce temporarily boosted with an extra 122 officers this week.

The manpower was taken from the Met's traffic unit, and the taskforce will have 272 officers for the next three months.

But it is the mayor who has come under heaviest fire for the climbing crime rate in London, with stabbings, shootings and murder rates soaring over the last year.

New plans will include money for a new unit to involve staff from the health service, police, schools and local government agencies to work together to tackle violent crime.

London bloodbath: Boy, 16, rushed to hospital after being stabbed near underground

The Met, London Ambulance Service and a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service unit were dispatched to the scene.

A boy was treated by London Ambulance, assisted by doctors from the London Air Ambulance.

One Twitter user said he saw the air ambulance land near Heathway Hill.

Photographs of the scene shows a huge crowd gathered on the pavement with a police car and ambulance stationed nearby.

A TEENAGER has been rushed to hospital after being stabbed just before 5.30pm near Dagenham Heathway Underground Station on Heathway.

A passerby who witnessed the emergency response said they felt "horrified" at the knife crime.

He told the Standard: "I hope and pray the young lad recovers quickly."

Dagenham Heathway is believed to have been closed off by Barclays bank toward the station.

Scotland Yard await an update on the victim's condition.

There have been no arrests so far and a crime scene remains.

A police spokesman said: "Police were called at 5.20pm to reports of a stabbing outside Dagenham Heathway Station.

"Officers, LAS and HEMS attended.

"The victim, a 16-year-old male has been taken to hospital.

"We await an update on his condition.

"No arrests enquiries continue."

Barking and Dagenham Police tweeted: "Police are currently dealing with a serious assault on the Heathway, Dagenham.

London bloodbath: Man in his 20s dies after stabbing in London

A MAN believed to be in his 20s has died after a fatal stabbing in London as the city's violent crimewave continues.




Cops swooped on Corinne Road at about 9.17pm on Tuesday, following reports a man had been stabbed.

Once they arrived they found a man, believed to be in his 20s, suffering from a single stab wound.

Officers provided first aid shortly afterwards, but the victim was pronounced dead at 10.07pm.

The victim's family are yet to be told about his death.

Formal identification of the body is yet to take place.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police told Daily Star Online: "A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.



No arrests have been made and enquiries continue.

Earlier this month the number of homicides in London so far this year passed 100.

On Tuesday a 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital for treatment after he was stabbed outside Dagenham Heathway Station during the evening rush hour.
