JERUSALEM -- President Donald Trump on Wednesday granted a full pardon to Aviem Sella, the handler of convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, as part of the outgoing president's spree of clemency actions in his last hours in office.

Pollard, a former Navy intelligence analyst, sold military secrets to Israel while working at the Pentagon in the 1980s. Sella, a retired Israeli air force officer, enlisted Pollard to spy for Israel and fled the United States after Pollard was arrested in 1985. Sella was charged in absentia on three espionage counts, but was not extradited to the U.S. from Israel.

The White House said in a statement that Sella's request for clemency received backing from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli ambassador in Washington, the American ambassador to Israel, and Miriam Adelson, the widow of Republican megadonor and Trump supporter Sheldon Adelson who died last week.

Rubashkin previously ran the Iowa headquarters of a family business that was the country's largest kosher meat-processing company.  In 2009, he was convicted of bank fraud and sentenced thereafter to 27 years in prison. Mr. Rubashkin has served less than 9 years of that sentence.

United States President Donald Trump announced on Twitter last Thursday his decision to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

The tweet sent a sudden thrill through Israeli society just a couple weeks ahead of the April 9 Knesset elections. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu (Likud), currently fighting for political survival, immediately welcomed the announcement, as did his opponents who experienced an obvious sense of political paralysis in the wake of the news.

The new legislation amended an existing law "On Preventing and Countering Antisemitism in Ukraine" passed in 2021 to add criminal liability.

As defined by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, antisemitism when committed by an individual is punishable by a fine or a prison sentence of up to five years.

Public officials would also be fined or imprisoned for up to five years, and banned from holding certain offices for up to three years.

Organized groups committing acts of antisemitism, or acts with severe consequences, are punishable with prison sentences of up to eight years.


International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance

WASHINGTON – Ten US states announced on Wednesday that they are adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism. The announcement came as the world marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Nevada, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming all issued proclamations on Wednesday. The Commonwealth of Virginia issued an executive order.

The IHRA defines antisemitism as "a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities."

"The use of this definition of antisemitism, although it is not to be taken as an exhaustive definition, will increase awareness and understanding of the parameters of contemporary anti-Jewish discrimination in certain circumscribed areas," some of the proclamations read.

Adam Teitelbaum, executive director of the Jewish Federations of North America's Israel Action Network, said that promoting the IHRA definition of antisemitism "is a top public policy priority for Jewish Federations.
