TROUBLED AFL star Liam Jurrah has been refused bail after being charged with four counts of aggravated assault.

The 24-year-old was allegedly involved in a violent incident at a 24-hour shop in Alice Springs early yesterday, just days after he was acquitted of a serious harm charge in the NT Supreme Court.

Jurrah and another man, aged 33, have been charged with four counts of aggravated assault over the incident on Gap Rd.

CLP senator Nigel Scullion has been forced to build a fence around his office to keep his staff safe from "itinerants and drunks".

Senator Scullion denied the fence was related to his party scrapping the Banned Drinker Register seven months ago and he said he had decided to build it in March last year.

"My office has had an issue with itinerants and drunks since moving to our location in 2005," he said.

"A constituent had their car window smashed and most of the windows in the office complex had been damaged. There were also concerns for the safety of cleaners, who were coming in after hours."

Senator Scullion says the fence was built to protect staff and constituents from "ongoing anti-social behaviour".

Two women who manage businesses next to the senator's office - near the corner of Rothdale and McMillans roads in Jingili - agreed there were too many drunks on the streets, but they said it had become worse since the register was scrapped. Caltex Jingili manager Christine Norris said her staff had been eye-gouged, verbally abused and forced to escort frightened customers to their vehicles after the number of problem drunks escalated.

"We have had some staff that start one day and walk straight out. They can't handle it," she said.
"They feel like they have to be security guards at the same time."

Ms Norris said one female staff member had been attacked by a drunk couple just a few months ago.

TWO men have been charged over the death of a man after an incident in a bar in Katherine.

Detectives from Katherine and the Major Crime Squad have charged the men - aged 24 and  35 -  over the death of a 30-year-old man we cannot name for cultural reasons - in Katherine on Wednesday.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Richard Bryson said the two men, aged 24 and  35, have been charged with manslaughter.
