A TOP European official has hosed down Prime Minister Tony Abbott's suggestion that Australia and Europe are in talks on how to stop asylum seeker boats.

EUROPEAN Commission spokesman Natasha Bertaud also said that even if there were talks between the two, Europe would never adopt Australia's controversial asylum seeker policy.

Another 5,800 migrants desperate to reach Europe were rescued this weekend as they tried to cross the Mediterranean, more than 2,150 of them on Sunday, the Italian coastguard said.

The number rescued was one of the highest recorded in recent years, raising fears that the tide of people risking their lives to reach Europe from Africa and the Middle East has not been slowed by recent drownings.

"My understanding is that there has been some contact at official level between Australian people and Europeans," Abbott said, when asked if Europe had sought advice on how to deal with the issue.

"Obviously, Operation Sovereign Borders is an object lesson in how to do the right thing by everyone," he added, referring to Canberra's military-led response to boat people.

"To do the right thing by our people and ultimately do the right thing by poor, misguided people who for all sorts of reasons want a better life but very often end up dead if they succumb to the lure of the people-smugglers.
"There is a lesson in what's happened here in Australia for other countries. Quite obviously there is a lesson here."

But Commission spokeswoman Natasha Bertaud said in Brussels that she was "not aware" of any European-Australian contacts on asylum seekers.
She said "the European Union applies the principle of non-refoulement," or no forced return under international law.

"We have no intention of changing this. So of course the Australian model can never be a model for us," Bertaud added.

Abbott made the comments while flagging $500 million in savings due to the policy, largely through the closure of immigration detention centres and less demand for charter flights used to take volunteers back to their home countries.

http://www.ntnews.com.au/news/northern-territory/taxi-drivers-refused-to-pick-up-indigenous-men-because-they-were-intimidated-by-face-paint/story-fnk0b1zt-1227334482320

THREE cab drivers refused fares to two Indigenous men because they were "intimidated by the face paint" on one of the passengers who had taken part in a traditional ceremony in Darwin.

Blue Taxi Company spokeswoman Nikki Sadiq said the matter was investigated internally and had been handed over to the NT Department of Transport.

"We had a word with all three drivers who were dispatched to the job who said the reason they didn't pick up the passengers was because they were coming out of ceremony and (one of them) had oil paint on his face and the drivers felt intimidated by the face paint," Ms Sadiq said.

"Our policy is that if the driver feels intimidated or doesn't feel secure, they are allowed to refuse the fare."

Ms Sadiq said the company was contacted by the Department of Transport's Commercial Passenger Vehicles (CPV) branch and asked to submit a formal report regarding the incidents after the NT News reported the story.

The Department of Transport did not respond to questions from the NT News.

Ms Sadiq said the drivers had not been penalised.

"It is still being investigated," she said.

"We don't reject the Indigenous people.

"Most of the time we pick them up unless they're very intoxicated or the driver feels intimidated."

The passengers who were shunned by the cab drivers were prominent Territory musicians Jonathan 'Johnno' and Djunga Djunga Yunupingu — the brother and uncle of international singing star Gurrumul.

They had attended a funeral and were waiting for a pre-booked taxi to take them from the Skinnyfish Music offices in Fannie Bay to Palmerston around 4pm on Friday April 18.

Skinnyfish co-director Michael Hohnen said the taxi arrived but took off without stopping when the driver saw the men.

"I rang back and booked another one and the same thing happened another two times," Mr Hohnen said.

"It took four attempts to get one to stop.

"I've seen it time and time again over my 20-plus years working with Indigenous artists."

Mr Hohnen said there was a "need for public education" in relation to Aboriginal culture and stereotypes.

"It's an issue that needs to be addressed because many people wear makeup and paint," he said.

"I suppose it's how and by whom the paint is worn that is the issue."

NT Taxi Council chief executive Les Whittaker said he had "informed regulators about the incident" at a national taxi conference in Melbourne earlier in the week.

Mr Whittaker said the drivers could be fined penalty points for refusing the fares, depending on the outcome of the NT Departent of Transport's investigation.

"One penalty point is worth $140, they could be fined several penalty points, but it will depend on the circumstances," he said.

"Depending how serious an offence is, some drivers can have their licenses suspended for a period of time."

NT Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Sally Sievers said the incident was "potentially discriminatory".

"The legislation I administer says people who supply goods and services shall not discriminate against another person by refusing to supply goods or services or giving less favourable treatment based on things like race," Ms Sievers said.

It is very rare for me to talk to people who have been to Iceland. I think it is possibly the world's most pure, whitest nation.I'd so love to visit there to see their viking festival and their amazing nature. I do understand it is in darkness several months of the year a freezing.. but it'd be an experience.

Is the place still broke though? So in your time there what did you get to see and experience?
