AUSTRALIA will increase its Syrian refugee intake in the wake of the European humanitarian crisis although total refugee numbers will not rise.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has ordered Immigration Minister Peter Dutton to make a mercy mission to Geneva to meet with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and advise Australia is prepared to play a greater role, after photos of drowned Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi shocked the world and put a human face to the crisis..

Australian officials gave briefings to Germany, Sweden, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Finland and a European Commission representative in Sydney on April 30.

The US and Canada also had representatives at the full round meeting of the Intergovernmental Consultations for Migration, Asylum and Refugees.

As the number of Syrian refugees fleeing Islamic State and making the dangerous journey to Europe continues to swell, Australia is prepared to increase its Syrian intake above 30 per cent of our total refugee numbers.

It's believed Mr Abbott's preference is to drop the percentage of other nations because Australia has already committed to increasing the total intake from 13,750 places per year to 18,750 by 2018-19.

On Sunday Premier Jay Weatherill said South Australia could "absolutely" accept more refugees from the region.

"We certainly will be offering South Australia as an open and welcoming destination for those Syrians fleeing violence," Mr Weatherill said.

"I would like the Commonwealth to open the hearts of the nation of Australia to the people, Syrians, that are fleeing violence and persecution."

YOU are more likely to get your car stolen in the Top End than anywhere else in Australia. That's the stark message from just-released figures showing the number of cars stolen in the Darwin area is greater than in Blacktown, the worst area in NSW. 
 
And the same figures show that when it comes to stolen cars in actual numbers the Darwin area is only marginally behind the worst place in the country for stolen cars.

But Australia's car-theft epicentre, Logan in Queensland, has a population of more than 300,000 compared with the Darwin area's 110,000.

There were 727 cars stolen in the Darwin area (including Darwin, Palmerston and Litchfield) last year, according to the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council.

As same time in Logan, which has a reputation as a Queensland crime hotspot, thieves made off with 776 cars.


Blacktown, with a population of more than 300,000, had 703 cars stolen last year.

Vehicle thefts in the Territory jumped a staggering 18.8 per cent last year, according to NT Police statistics. This came at the same time as a 12.9 per cent increase in house break-ins.

While professionals were responsible for 31 per cent of stolen cars nationally, Deputy Police Commissioner Mark Payne (pictured) said the Territory's typical car thief was a teen*BOONG* from a troubled family.

And Mr Payne said the Territory's young car thieves*BOONGS* were brazen and willing to take significant risks.

"One of the primary reasons we are finding young offenders*NATIVE AUSTRALIAN BUSH GORILLAS/GENUS SPECIES* are breaking into premises is they want your car," he said.

"When they get your keys you will lose your vehicle."

The Territory's young car thieves are stealing cars to go joy riding and in many cases they deliberately try to goad police into chasing them.

Because the offenders are stealing for thrills rather than profit, Mr Payne said a significant number of cars stolen in the Territory were deliberately destroyed, frequently by fire.

On Friday night thieves *BOONGS*stole three cars from Myilly Point after breaking into four units in the same apartment block.

The thieves gained entry to all four units through unlocked doors. One of the units broken into was on the third floor.

Mr Payne said the theft of vehicles, like those from Myilly Point, highlighted the need for people to consider where they left their car keys and wallets when they get home

A 14-year-old girl has allegedly been approached and grabbed by an unknown man in a Northern Suburbs park, police say. 
 
The girl was walking through a park on Dalwood Cres, Malak when she was approached by the man aged in his 30s about 6pm.

Sergeant Leonard Turner said the man allegedly grabbed the girl by the arm and spoke to her.

"The girl did exactly the right thing and has told the man to leave her alone before running from the scene and reporting it to police," he said.

Sgt Turner said the man is described as being of aboriginal appearance, about 170cm tall, thin build aged in his late 30s with short dark hair and a short beard.


He was wearing black knee length cargo shorts, a red and orange basketball singlet with the number 6 or 9 and orange sunglasses.
