NT Police are searching for a convicted murderer who allegedly escaped the Correctional Services work camp in Nhulunbuy on Monday night.

Edward "Eddie" James Horrell, 62, is described as being 170cm tall and of medium build.

He was wearing blue and yellow hi-vis button up shirt and dark blue shorts at the time of his alleged escape.

Horrell has previously been convicted of rape, manslaughter and murder.

Court documents reveal Horrell "hit his defacto partner several times about the head with the blunt edge or the side of an axe", causing her death.


Nhulunbuy Police are conducting inquiries with known associates and family members of Horrell in an effort to locate him.

AARON Mamrika was with his older brother on the frontline of Friday's Groote Eylandt violence. 
 
He wore a spear to his lower left thigh — now bandaged with cloth — and can only hobble around the family's home.

He makes a circle with his hands about the size of a tennis ball to describe the wound.

The spear wounds to his 29-year-old brother were fatal.

A younger man, 19, was also killed and a third man seriously injured in some of the most extreme violence the community has seen.


Mr Mamrika's family have gathered each day under the shade of a mango tree outside their home.

"They did the wrong thing, they killed a young one in cold blood," a male relative said.

"The other one had a black magic, in our way, black magic."

Asked to elaborate, he said supernatural forces had been killing the younger man during a

three-day hiatus alone in the bush.

"His missus and family asked about it but he didn't tell them ... then he got stabbed."

Police must navige such deeply traditional systems of belief, grief and law with respect, while simultaneously trying to find those responsible and ensure no-one winds up injured.

"(Traditional law) is always a consideration and that's something we have to bear in the back of

our mind, there will be elements of the community who will want to do that," Commander Tony

Fuller said.

UPDATE: NT Police have obtained and reviewed video footage of the fight that unfolded on Groote Eylandt, killing two men. 
 
Commander Tony Fuller said it showed "a male struck by a spear thrown by a member of one of the opposing groups".

"Police believe the male who threw that spear is the second male who was killed,'' he said.

"We understand that the community is grieving and in shock. However police are asking the Elders and the community to assist in having these offenders come forward so that police can bring them to justice."

Commander Fuller said police understood the community may be worried about revenge attacks.


"We ask the offenders to make contact with local police so that we can make arrangements to protect them,'' he said.

"This is an extremely volatile situation which has been compounded by the death of another person on the island unrelated to this incident. "

More police arrived on Groote Eylandt on Sunday as tensions continue to simmer after clan fighting left two dead and another seriously injured in the small community of Angurugu.

The bodies of the two men, aged 19 and 29, were flown to Darwin on Sunday for autopsy amid an outpouring of grief from community members who turned out in numbers to see the plane off.

Police are yet to make any arrests but last night seized a number of weapons including spears, machetes and hammers.

Some were voluntarily handed in.

There was no repeat of violence on Saturday but the situation remains tense.

On Sunday morning a Landcruiser had a large rock thrown at it as it drove through the streets.

The Tactical Response Group also remains on Groote Eylandt.
