ESCAPED killer Jeffrey Ahwon forgot he was eligible for parole 10 months ago.


Instead of walking out of the Darwin Correctional Centre with a stamp on his release forms, Mr Ahwon walked out when the guards weren't looking 15 days ago and has sparked a lengthy manhunt.

In addition taxpayers will now likely have to fork out an extra $130,000 for Ahwon to serve the remaining two years and seven months of his sentence. He also faces a maximum of three more years in prison for escaping custody.

Ahwon has not been seen since his escape despite a team of eight NT police investigators co-ordinating a round the clock manhunt for him.

Recapturing Ahwon, 20, remains a high priority for police who are still in contact with Ahwon's family and associates.

Ahwon was one of three teenagers who bashed 39-year-old Rick Dermody at Casuarina Square Shopping Centre in 2013.

BRITISH Prime Minister David Cameron said he was "battling for Britain" at a Brussels summit — and for a less intrusive EU that would also benefit other countries.


But French President Francois Hollande warned that no individual leader should be allowed to stop closer European co-operation.

"It's the EU in question, not just one country in the EU," Hollande said.

"I want Britain to stay in the EU. But I hope most of all that Europe can advance, can be stronger."

Cameron is seeking changes to the UK-EU relationship that will let him urge Britons to vote "yes" to continued membership in a referendum that could come as early as June.

Cameron told his fellow leaders that he needed a substantial deal that would be "credible for the British people".
The British referendum on EU membership is bound to be hard-fought, since few issues in Britain have as much resonance as its relationship with the EU.

"The question of Britain's place in Europe has been allowed to fester for too long," Cameron said, arguing that this was a chance to settle the issue for a generation.

Britain, which has one of the strongest economies in Europe, has been a magnet for hundreds of thousands of workers from EU nations in Eastern Europe seeking higher-paying jobs.





Britain has no power to stop immigration from other EU nations, leading some in Britain to say that immigrants are taking their jobs.

The EU immigrants can also claim unemployment, child care and other benefits in Britain, which the government claims is straining the country's social services budget.

Since none of the 27 other leaders has a desire to see Britain leave, there is broad consensus, if not agreement, on a deal which Cameron says he needs to win the referendum.

It would give Britain more powers to limit benefit payments to workers from other EU countries for several years — something Britain says will slow the pace of immigration.


The deal also offers guarantees to countries, including Britain, that do not use the shared euro currency, and makes tweaks aimed at boosting competitiveness and giving national parliaments more power.

But differences remain on key details, including Britain's wish to be exempted from the EU's longstanding aim of "ever closer union".

A WOMAN escaped three men during a harrowing sex attack in a concrete drain in Palmerston early this morning.


Territory Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said a man sleeping in a unit on Wright Crescent in Gray was woken up by the victim's screams at 2.30am.

The man then ran to a concrete drain behind the complex to help the woman and scared off her attackers.

Supt Jorgensen said the victim was shaken by her ordeal but the man's efforts prevented the attack from escalating.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police expect to interview the victim later today, but the three suspects were described as indigenous men.

THE management of an 80-year-old Hindmarsh family business that announced its closure this morning, costing 54 jobs, has lashed out at the recent spate of free trade agreements that it says has made its future unviable.


Family owned business Industrial Engineers and Spring Makers will cease operations on March 24, with all 54 employees — the majority of whom are older than 50 — to be made redundant.

The company makes springs for cars, trucks, trailers and industrial applications, along with other allied products. However, management said the demise of the local automotive industry was not the driving factor of its predicament.

Instead, senior manager Chris Coxon, whose grandfather Jack Marsh founded the company in 1935, laid blame on the increasing number of free trade agreements, which he says has created a uneven playing field.

In recent years, former trade minister (now trade envoy) Andrew Robb has overseen the signing of a number of agreements, with partner countries including China, Japan and Korea.

"To us it boils down to a policy issue, presumably in the name of free trade, which in turn assumes that free and open trade weeds out businesses that are inefficient," Mr Coxon said.

"While true at a broad macro level, it can be utter nonsense at the micro community level, particularly when copies of our products are not made under the same conditions and regulatory environment."

Mr Coxon said the writing was on the wall when major client Kenworth Trucks switched to an overseas supplier last year.


"Our issue is with the Chinese copying our products," he said.





"They produce a lower quality good and charge, say, 20 per cent less for it, which, in this economic climate, sees around 80 per cent of people select that good.

"We make a better quality product but can't compete on price."

Managing director Tim Marsh said all of the company's suppliers will be paid in full, on top of more than $1 million in redundancy payments and other entitlements.

"We want to do the right thing by everyone — nobody will miss out," he said.
