A MAN SUDANESE APE has randomly attacked at least six people at the Regency Plaza Shopping Centre, landing one woman in hospital.

Late on Thursday night, police questioned a 20-year-old at his Broadview house in connection with the attacks.

He was expected to be charged overnight with numerous counts of assault and appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday.

Courageous Regency Plaza Shopping Centre store owners formed a vigilante group, managing to warn others the assailant was approaching and eventually chasing him away.

The suspect walked through the shopping centre and car park on Main North Rd just after 1pm.

He randomly attacked and punched at least six people.

The attacks spilt over close to a nearby school, where Ms Tiburzi managed to warn a father collecting his daughter to get away.

She said several of the young students witnessed one of the attacks and were visibly distressed.

Cigarette store owner Eric Montgomery also put his welfare in danger by following the rampaging man and warning others to take cover.

"These were not just little hits — they were king hits of the most vicious kind," he said.

Mr Montgomery said he also "feared for his life" when the man grabbed a "four by two" piece of wood and began swinging it.

The suspect was earlier described as a man of Sudanese appearance in his late 20s with a slim build wearing a white T-shirt and khaki shorts.

A 56-year-old woman who was hit was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital where she was treated for concussion.

The 20-year-old man was arrested at his home in Broadview last night.

IMMIGRATION officials refused to reveal why a convicted rapist was allowed to visit a Darwin tourist hot spot while awaiting his deportation.


Nepalese national Amit Hamal's student visa was cancelled following his conviction for raping a woman while she slept in her Sydney home in 2011.

But Hamal, 27, was allowed to join a day trip to Crocosaurus Cove in Mitchell St where he fled from Serco staff on Monday.

He was arrested in Smith St by Territory Police after eight hours on the run from authorities. The NT News understands Hamal had been fighting the cancellation of his visa since his release from prison.

It is understood Hamal has been detained by immigration officials since his release.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said Hamal's escape would be the subject of an internal review.
"I have asked the Department to launch an investigation into this matter and expect appropriate action to ensure something like this does not happen again," he said.

Solomon MP Natasha Griggs said the escape was deeply concerning.

"This individual should not have been allowed out of detention, even if under escort, to visit a tourist site. This appears to be a breakdown in detention centre processes," she said.

Hamal was charged with escaping detention and was granted bail by Judge Alan Woodcock on the condition he stayed at the Wickham Point detention centre for a guilty plea on May 31.

Darwin Local Court heard Hamal had an interstate conviction for sexual intercourse without consent and served three years in a NSW prison.

A YOUNG man (*piece of Leb trash*) facing a possible life sentence over his alleged role in a gang rape of a teenage girl at a western Sydney house party has failed in his bid to be freed on bail.

Tristan Carlyle-Watson has been behind bars since last year, after he allegedly contacted a 16-year-old girl over Facebook and invited her to a party at St Clair, where he is said to have given her alcohol and cannabis.

It is alleged she blacked out a short time later, and that as she drifted in and out of consciousness as she was sexually assaulted by several men.

During a bail hearing on Wednesday, the NSW Supreme Court heard that the alleged attackers took turns having sex with the teenager and filmed themselves in the act using a GoPro camera, and that Carlyle-Watson was captured on film laughing.

Justice David Davies on Wednesday said the footage depicted "what can only be described as a gang rape of the victim when she was sometimes unconscious, and the rest of the time exceptionally inebriated".

He added that it was reasonable to infer that one of the drinks she had been given was spiked.

RESIDENTS near Frog Hollow Park are suffering sleepless nights as long-grassers (LAZY, DRUNK BOONGS) congregate to the area for boozy and often violent nights out while family members book out nearby accommodation.


A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, lived next-door to Darwin CBD budget accommodation Frogshollow Backpackers, and has chased people off his property after suffering sleepless nights due to constant screaming, shouting and fighting.

"(I'm) struggling to sleep every night because of all of the people — long-grassers, friends and families of tenants drinking in the park just in front of my home every night until 4am or 5am in the morning," he said.

He said it got so bad, people would trespass on to his property. "I've had to call the police as they were sneaking into my backyard," he said. "I'm not talking about every now and then, it's every night, it's happening even right now."

Frogshollow Backpackers receptionist Kumu Acharya, who has worked there for two months, said the troublemakers were known to the hostel.


"Their family members used to stay in the hostel," Ms Acharya said. "Because they don't have any money they can't afford to stay at the hostel, so they stay at the park. We used to talk to them and close the door and if the situation got worse we'd call the police."
She said the revelry had quietened down recently, but was rampant four to five days ago. "For one week it was fighting," Ms Acharya said.

"They got drunk and then sleep on the roads, then fighting each other again. We had to call the Darwin police so many times." She said the hostel's residents preferred to party on the grounds rather than out in the park.

NT Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said police received a number of complaints from nearby residents in regard to the area, mostly in the early hours of the morning.
