The High Court has struck down the ACT's same-sex marriage laws. 
 
The court unanimously ruled that the ACT's Marriage Equality (Same Sex) Act 2013 could not operate concurrently with the federal Marriage Act 1961.


Couples who have already tied the knot will have their unions annulled.

The High Court agreed with the Commonwealth that it had sole power on determining marriage laws following a hearing last week.

The Abbott government did not seek an injunction to prevent marriages from taking place, meaning couples had a five-day window to wed from last weekend when the laws came into effect.

Some 15 couples took the opportunity last weekend and there had been more since but their unions will not stand.

The ACT Legislature passed the Marriage Equality Same Sex Act 2013 by 9 votes to 8 in October with the support of the Labor Government and its one Greens member.

Earlier today, ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said any High Court decision to strike down the territory's same-sex marriage laws will force the federal parliament to act.

Ms Gallagher said she was anxious about the court's ruling, especially as almost 30 same-sex couples have taken advantage of the laws by marrying in Canberra since Saturday.

But she defended her government's decision to initiate the landmark legislation.

``Even if we are unsuccessful today, we think there has been a step forward in the marriage-equality debate,'' she told ABC television.

If the laws are struck down, because they are inconsistent with the Commonwealth's Marriage Act, the focus would shift to the federal parliament.

FORTESCUE Metals Group is thinking about boosting its indigenous workforce by picking up sacked Rio Tinto workers from the shattered Gove refinery in the Northern Territory. 
 
But Perth-based Fortescue, which regularly trumpets its indigenous employment credentials, says it will focus on employing indigenous people in the Pilbara before flying in workers from the Northern Territory (NT), Queensland or NSW.

Mining giant Rio Tinto recently decided to close its Gove alumina refinery, leaving some 1100 people out of work and crushing the neighbouring town of Nhulunbuy which has a large indigenous population.

TWO Turkish students who posed in front of the former concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau while performing Nazi salutes are facing charges of propagating fascism, the Polish news agency PAP reported. 
 
The two 22-year-olds posed in front of the sign - famous the world over for its inscription "Arbeit macht frei (Work makes you free)" - on Sunday, reported PAP.

They were both arrested and face charges of propagation of fascism.

The use of Nazi symbols is punishable under Polish law.

The two men study history in Hungary, according to the report.

A GROUND announcer was sacked on the spot after making racial remarks at the Chairman's XI vs England match at Traeger Park in Alice Springs yesterday. 
 
David Nixon, an ABC Open producer and ground announcer for the game, was stood down for introducing England spin bowler Monty Panesar to a crowd of about 2000 using an Indian accent.

COWBOY builder and used-car dealer Ali Faraj has been dubbed the state's "dodgiest trader'' by the consumer watchdog, after his latest court appearance this week.                                       
He has a "substantial history'' of "unscrupulous behaviour'' that stretches across different industries and has cost him $150,000 in fines and compensation payouts in the past 14 months, Consumer and Business Services said.

The Warradale man, 31, is a home-wrecking renovator and backyard car dealer who has swindled people out of tens of thousands of dollars using three different names.
He also holds the record for the highest fines imposed by courts for breaching building and car dealing laws.

Faraj, 31, also known as ­Kamel Kassem and Kamel Moussel­mani, was also jailed in Victoria for six months in 2011. He has convictions for at least 68 dishonesty and deception offences in that state.

Consumer Affairs Commissioner Paul White said Faraj "clearly has complete contempt for the law''.
"He is untrustworthy, unethical and CBS have made every endeavour to ensure he is no longer a threat to consumers,'' he said.

On Monday, Faraj was fined $33,000 in the Adelaide Magistrates Court for selling more than 10 used cars without a second-hand car dealer's ­licence.
He was found to have "intentionally'' traded the cars illegally, some over the internet, between July 2011 and ­December 2012.

The vehicles, many brought from Victoria, included Mercedes Benz sedans, a Toyota HiLux and a Nissan Skyline.

The previous Friday, Faraj was banned in the District Court from working in the building industry after continuing to advertise for construction work despite convictions last year for working unlicensed and ripping off several customers for tens of thousands of dollars for renovation jobs.
For these crimes, he was fined $57,000 and paid $1706 victims of crime levy, $800 for prosecution costs and $60,000 compensation in September last year.

He undertook contracts worth more than $700,000 with at least four Adelaide homeowners to carry out renovations, demolition, painting, plumbing and electrical work in 2010 and 2011.
In one case he demolished the interior of a beachfront Hallett Cove home and left the $380,000 job unfinished - despite taking a $50,000 deposit from the owners.

A US white supremacist serial killer who also admitted to shooting porn mogul Larry Flynt has been put to death in Missouri by lethal injection.
Joseph Paul Franklin - who was blamed for a string of killings between 1977 and 1980 that he apparently committed in a bid to start a race war - was declared dead on Wednesday (local time) in Bonne Terre, Missouri.

The 63-year-old was convicted of eight racially motivated murders.
He claimed to have committed 20 in total.

A judge had issued a stay temporarily halting Franklin's execution, but that order was lifted a short time later, allowing it to proceed.
Franklin, who was put to death for killing Gerald Gordon outside a synagogue in St Louis, Missouri in 1977, was serving several life sentences following his three-year-long killing spree.
But he is perhaps most infamous for shooting Hustler publisher Flynt in 1978, in an apparent assassination attempt that left him in a wheelchair.

The porn mogul wrote last month that he would like to "inflict damage" on Franklin, but did not wish to see him die.
Flynt said he had been targeted by Franklin "because of a photo spread I ran in Hustler magazine featuring a black man and a white woman".

"He had bombed several synagogues... he hated blacks, he hated Jews.
"As I see it, the sole motivating factor behind the death penalty is vengeance, not justice, and I firmly believe that a government that forbids killing among its citizens should not be in the business of killing people itself," Flynt wrote in The Hollywood Reporter.'I felt like I was at war'In a recent interview with CNN, Franklin blamed his hatred on a poor upbringing and a family that abused him and stunted his mental development.

Early on Wednesday, the Eighth US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Franklin's lawyers had not provided enough evidence, and overturned that ruling.
The execution was the first in Missouri in nearly three years, and the 35th in the US this year.

SCAMMERS have targeted an elderly pensioner in Adelaide's northeast by posing as council workers and forcing her to pay $900 to prune her trees.
                                      
Four men went to 83-year-old Ilse Potitt's Paradise home on Monday claiming to be Campbelltown Council workers sent to cut her trees away from powerlines.
The men "hacked" two trees in half and then demanded $1200 from Mrs Potitt.
"They were wearing orange shirts and came in a car then when I said OK they called someone and a truck came so I thought it was OK," Mrs Potitt said.

"I was shocked because I didn't know I had to pay so I I gave them $900 because that's all I had.
"They said 'you only have $900? Then you better go back to the bank and we'll be back."
Campbelltown Council chief executive Paul Di Iulio said the men were "definitely not council staff" and he "could only assume" it was a scam.

A scam alert has been posted on the council's website and Mr Di Iulio urged residents to seek identification from anyone claiming to be a council worker and contact the council if they had suspicions.

"Council does not work on trees on private property therefore if anyone is approached by people claiming that they are from council to undertake work on their property I would recommend that they ring council to obtain confirmation prior to agreeing to allow them to undertake any work," Mr Di Iulio said.

He said all council workers wore uniform, drove council marked cars or carried ID.
               
Police door knocked the street yesterday and said about seven other homes had been approached by the men and a business card was left at one which they were investigating.
They said it was "too early to determine whether an offence has been committed".

"At this stage it appears there is no widespread scam taking place," Eastern Adelaide Police Chief Inspector­ Christine Baulderstone said.

Mrs Potitt has lived in her Gameau Rd home since 1971.
The widow, who lives with her son Michael, said street was normally quiet.
"It's knocked me about a bit and I feel very nervous now," she said.
               
Mrs Potitt described the men as having dark skin, tall and one had cornrows in his hair.

Mr Potitt said his mother was "shaken and scared" by the incident.
"Mum broke down in tears and was trembling and told me they had forced $900 out of her," Mr Potitt, 46, said.

Angela Bush said she was left absolutely mortified when her son Fred McCoy, who was suffering from an ear infection, was smacked on the bottom by one of the doctors at a Darwin medical centre on Monday.
Ms Bush said her little boy was being more raucous than normal due to feeling unwell but his behaviour had not been out of the ordinary for a two-year-old, and certainly did not warrant being smacked by their GP.
She said Fred had been playing with a wooden sliding door separator in the GP's consulting room when the doctor got frustrated and smacked him.
"He was just being a normal little two-year-old, yes a bit louder than usual, but he absolutely did not deserve to be smacked," Ms Bush said.

Karine Leigh  Maygar, 20, caught the attention of Townsville police on October 15 when she was heard calling an African-looking man a "black c---" and saying she was sexually assaulted by people like him.

When police started talking to  Maygar, others stepped forward and said she had been mouthing off at them earlier and trying to pick fights at other venues.

Magistrate Howard Osborne told  Maygar on Thursday she had a serious problem with alcohol, as he fined her $1500 for the tirade.
She pleaded guilty in Townsville Magistrates Court to public nuisance and breaching a bail condition.
Mr Osborne fined her and banned her from Flinders St East for 12 months.

The 20-year-old cabin crew attendant took to Facebook to respond, saying "its (sic) not me its (sic) tequila that has a problem with me because I turn into a complete wild one".
She also wrote "n----- it's not fun when your (sic) in watch-house overnight", then laughed and wrote it was "like my second home".     She pleaded guilty in Townsville Magistrates Court to public nuisance and breaching a bail condition.

Mr Osborne fined her and banned her from Flinders St East for 12 months.
The court was told others told police  Maygar had been calling random people "fat c----" and "ugly c----" to try to pick a fight.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Richard Scholl said officers warned her and told her to leave Flinders St. They then watched her approach another man at the taxi rank and throw her half-eaten hot-dog at him, before lunging at him and punching him.

Solicitor Ross Malcomson said his client intended to relocate to Darwin to remove herself from bad influences.

Welcome to Casuarina Square- the Top End's biggest shopping centre and magnet for more than 170,000 weekly visitors.

Most shoppers leave happy and trouble free, but the centre's security arrangements have come under fire since the brutal October 28 bashing in the Woolies carpark of Adelaide's Rick Dermody, who died days later from his injuries.

The attack triggered an outpouring of grief and anger on social media and prompted others to share their stories of threats and, sometimes, worse.

The NT News this week visited the centre to chat with shoppers and retailers about security.
Some were scathing in their criticism, others nonchalant, but there was overwhelming agreement that an ever-present tangible or intangible level of intimidation exists, particularly after dark and in the carparks.    One retailer, who asked not to be named for fear of breaching the shop's contract with centre management, described the situation as "appalling".

"You are putting yourself in danger when you're here to a certain extent," he said. "It's been especially bad since the CLP took away the banned drinker register. That sh*t (bashings and threats) happens all the time down there (in the carpark).

"The bus stops are a war zone and it's the randomness of things, like that poor bloke, just the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.
Shoplifting is commonplace at the store, but the retailer said he no longer bothered calling security because "they'll either be engaged or someone will come but they will be 15 minutes late".
Other retailers and shop assistants described running to their cars after shifts and taking the most visible exits.

They said security was on hand to escort them from the centre if they wished.
Security and police were present when the NT News visited.
Most retailers agreed they were around but would like to see more.
One retailer described the centre as like a babysitter for kids without stable homes. She said she had worked in Brisbane shopping centres and had never come across the "gangs" that congregated at Casuarina Square.

A source from inside the centre, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, defended the security but agreed CCTV cameras could not reach every corner of the underground carparks.
He said management had gagged workers from speaking to the media and had even told him to delete a Facebook comment voicing his disgust about what had happened to Mr Dermody.
"Kat", a 34-year-old woman with a young child, said she had been shopping at Casuarina Square for years, but refused to park under Woolworths because of intimidation from youths.   
"Nick", a 49-year-old former policeman who visits about three times a week, said he was confident he would not be troubled.

"You see a few groups prowling around - security seem to do a good job moving them on, but I keep on guard," he said.

Centre manager Ben Gill declined to provide details about the role, but said that it would be filled "imminently".

He also revealed the centre was examining lapel video cameras which could be worn by security guards on rounds.

In responding to criticism about the centre's security, Mr Gill acknowledged: "When there is crime in Darwin, crime will sometimes come to Casuarina Square", but pointed to crime reduction measures.

He said the centre had built a strong relationship with police, which included the establishment of an in-store beat, while an August review of the carpark areas led to more lighting and brighter paint on the walls.
"The overwhelming majority of our visitors are well-behaved, good citizens who enjoy our facilities, but as with anywhere in the community we will come into contact with people who choose to break the law," he said.

"This is why we have built a strong ongoing relationship with NT Police, so they can effectively do their job and crack down on these criminals."
Mr Gill said there were 170 CCTV cameras located in and around the centre which had led to prosecutions.
He also said the centre issued trespass notices when appropriate, worked to minimise alcohol abuse through the Casuarina Alcohol Accord and held parent and offender conferences with minor offenders.   

Police could not provide figures for Casuarina Square-specific offences or callouts.

Critics say the program threatens local jobs, but the Immigration Department is pushing the working holiday program.
It is the largest of its kind in the world, with almost 260,000 visas issued in 2012-13, according to the department's annual report.
Australia has visa arrangements with 28 countries and negotiations are under way with another 13, including financially crippled nations with high youth unemployment such as Greece, Spain and Portugal.
The program, which allows foreigners aged 18-30 to work in Australia, has been criticised by unions and some migration experts for threatening the job prospects of young locals.
They say that Europeans, in particular, are fleeing their dismal economies, coming to Australia as working holiday-makers and, in many cases, being sponsored for longer-term visas by employers.
But immigration authorities said that the visa program was providing strong support to the agricultural, mining, construction and tourism industries.
"Research indicates that for every 100 working holiday-makers arriving in Australia, there is a net gain to the Australian economy of 6.3 full time jobs," said the department's annual report.
This meant an estimated net gain to the Australian economy of more than 16,000 full-time jobs, it said.
Other countries negotiating with Australia for the scheme include the Czech Republic, Hungary, Israel, Latvia, Mexico, Poland, Slovakia and Vietnam.

Greek leftists and members of the neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn have faced off in Athens over a protest organised against the indictment of several Golden Dawn members in a government crackdown.
Hundreds of leftist protesters and some 2000 neo-Nazi supporters gathered near Golden Dawn offices in central Athens, an AFP reporter on the scene said.
Police trucks were positioned to keep the rival groups apart, before the leftists dispersed without incident.
The wife of Golden Dawn leader Nikos Michaloliakos, who is in jail awaiting trial, said the party had 'millions' of supporters and would emerge triumphant.
'Millions of Greeks follow us. Rest assured that with our leader in the front line, we will take our country back,' Eleni Zaroulia told the crowd.
Anti-fascist groups wanted to stop the Golden Dawn gathering from going ahead altogether.
'Put the murderers in prison and smash the para-state of Golden Dawn,' read a banner carried by the protesters, alluding to the neo-Nazis suspected sympathies among Greek police.
The demonstration come as authorities prepare to hit additional senior Golden Dawn members with fresh charges as early as next week, following a move by parliament to cut the party's state funding.
Golden Dawn leader Michaloliakos, deputy party leader Christos Pappas and party MP Yiannis Lagos are already being held in a high-security Athens prison on charges of running or belonging to a criminal group.
In total six of the party's MPs have been charged in connection with the investigation, which was prompted by the murder of an anti-fascist musician by a self-confessed neo-Nazi last month.
No trial date has been set for the indicted MPs. If convicted, each accused faces at least 10 years in prison.

A group of four men, aged 66, 48, 39 and 27, and a 62-year-old woman was walking along Blair Street in Bondi at 12.30am (AEDT) on Saturday when eight young males, some of whom were teenagers, shouted "derogatory comments" towards them, NSW Police said in a statement.
The eight then allegedly physically assaulted the group and a melee played out along Glenayr Avenue until police arrived.
All five in the older group were injured, suffering concussion, a fractured cheekbone, possible broken nose, lacerations and bruising.
They were taken to St Vincent's Hospital.
Police said the alleged offenders tried to flee but officers arrested three males not far from the fight.
Two 17-year-olds were charged with affray and breach of bail.
They were refused bail to appear at children's court on Sunday.
A 23-year-old man was charged with affray.
He was granted bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on December 3.
Federal frontbencher and local MP Malcolm Turnbull criticised the apparent racist attack.
"Violence of this kind and in particular racist violence, anti-semitic violence, is completely unacceptable in our society," he told the Nine Network.
"We should have zero tolerance."
Meanwhile NSW Anti-Discrimination Board president Stepan Kerkyasharian said the board would investigate.
"There's been severe racial vilification here, that's a term under the legislation, and I think we should look at taking action," he told Channel Seven.

The mystery is solved — but the future of the young girl  known only as Maria is still uncertain.
DNA tests have confirmed that a Bulgarian Roma couple living  in an impoverished village with their nine other children are the biological  parents of the girl found in Greece with another Roma couple, authorities said  Friday.
Genetic profiles of Sasha Ruseva, 35, and her 37-year-old  husband, Atanas, matched that of Maria, Bulgarian Interior Ministry official  Svetlozar Lazarov said Friday.
By late Friday, the couple had not returned to their home  that was surrounded by local and international reporters after the news was  announced, and police said their whereabouts were unknown to them.
Three of the couple's youngest children were taken to a  shelter for temporary care, said Diana Kaneva, director of social services for  the central Stara Zagora region.
Ruseva had said she gave birth to a baby girl four years ago  in Greece while working there as an olive picker but gave the child away because  she was too poor to care for her. She since has had two more children after  Maria.
Maria has been in a charity's care since authorities raided  a settlement of Roma, also known as Gypsies, in Greece last week and found she  was not related to the Greek Roma couple she was living with.

Former Australian Nazi and convicted felon Jim Saleam has been blocked from entering New Zealand to speak at a National Front rally in Wellington.

Saleam, who these days is leader of the extreme Right-wing Australia First political party, was stopped from boarding a flight from Sydney to Christchurch on Wednesday.

An Immigration New Zealand spokesman said Saleam's criminal convictions made him an "excluded person", who was not eligible for a visa or entry permission without special exemption.

He spent 3 years in jail during the 1990s for organising a shotgun attack on the home of an African National Congress representative. He also spent two years in jail for insurance fraud.

In the 1970s, he was involved with the Nationalist Socialist Party of Australia - Australia's Nazi Party - and has been photographed wearing swastika armbands.

Immigration NZ said Saleam was allowed into the country in March after declaring his convictions. But new information had since come to light that meant he was now required to apply for a Special Direction to visit.

In September, his Australia First party received 7412 votes, 0.1% of the primary vote, in the Australian federal election.

Called "Jabba's Palace," the set features a giant alien who resides in a building that, according to critics, resembles a mosque. The scenario was first put on sale in 2012 as part of Lego's Star Wars collection, but it wasn't until this past January that the toy started to spark debate, The Independent reports.

The outlet explains the controversy in detail, highlighting the purportedly anti-Islamic nature of "Jabba's Palace":

The game, which is aimed at children aged from nine to 14, features Jabba the Hutt in his intergalactic lair. Jabba, the slug-like villain who first appeared in the 1983 film Return of the Jedi, lives in a domed, oriental-looking building equipped with rockets and machine guns. He also smokes a water pipe and keeps Princess Leia in chains for use as his personal slave.

Furious Muslim critics complained that the Lego set's Asian and oriental figures were "deceitful and criminal" characters such as gun-runners, slave masters and terrorists.

Melissa Gunes, a spokesperson for Austria's Turkish Cultural Association (TCA), told The Independent that the toy doesn't belong in kids' bedrooms, as the palace that is depicted is said to look like the Hagia Sophia mosque, an Islamic house of worship in Istanbul.
"The game is pedagogical dynamite. It depicts Muslims as terrorists," the cultural association added.Initially, Lego rebuffed attempts to have the toy pulled off shelves, arguing that the company had merely followed the Star Wars films in creating the scenario and that there was nothing sinister about it at all. But it seems that the company has now decided to cease production of the toy starting in 2014.
After Muslim officials met with Lego leaders, the decision to pull "Jabba's Palace" was purportedly made. TCA is predictably happy with Lego's decision.
While Lego hasn't yet commented on the latest development in the controversy, the company previously said that the toy was not modeled after any actual buildings.

Prominent barrister and asylum seeker advocate Julian Burnside QC is proposing the entire state of Tasmania be declared an immigration detention centre.

Mr Burnside has been in Hobart to talk about the off-shore processing of asylum seekers.

He floated the idea at a public lecture saying the entire state of Tasmania could be a place of detention for asylum seekers who arrive by boat.

He has previously criticised both the Labor Party's Papua New Guinea solution, as well as the Coalition's plan to process asylum claims in the Pacific.

Mr Burnside is instead suggesting his own 'Tasmanian solution'.

"If politicians are obsessed with the idea that asylum seekers must be kept in detention then that could be legally satisfied by declaring the island of Tasmania a place of detention," he said.
"Have officers of the Commonwealth at each port of departure and then allow the asylum seekers to live in the community in Tasmania. They would still legally be in detention."

Mr Burnside says the solution be the equivalent of community detention and save money.

"That would save on my estimates, in fact on government estimates, around about $3 billion a year."
  "It would look exactly like community detention, although as a matter of law it would look like immigration detention.

"The point of it, of course, is that it's much less damaging to the people involved and it would be far less expensive even if every one of them received full Centrelink benefits, which they'd spend in the Tasmanian community."

He has suggested the Federal Government give the Tasmanian Government $1 billion a year as "a thank you".

"At least that would have the benefit of according with history because Tasmania was used as a place of detention some years ago."
Tasmanians more welcomingHe believes community support for the Pontville Detention Centre near Hobart shows Tasmanians are more welcoming of asylum seekers and he would like to see them housed in rural areas.

Asylum seekers have been detained at Pontville since 2011, most recently hundreds of
unaccompanied children.
Most have now been released into community detention.

"The success of the Pontville Detention Centre suggests to me that Tasmanians are in some ways better disposed to asylum seekers than some people on the mainland," Mr Burnside said.

Tasmania's Premier Lara Giddings says she has not heard about the suggestion but she does not support any detention centres.

"You want to be very cautious about going down a pathway too far. We have been very welcoming of the Pontville centre but I can tell you I don't really like detention centres for people who are asylum seekers," the premier said.

Brighton Mayor Tony Foster supports the idea.

"These people want to be well educated, they want to understand Australian culture and they want to work and I think they should be given every opportunity to do so while they are in transition going from where they are at the moment to where they may become full Australian citizens."

Mr Burnside rejects suggestions it would encourage, not deter boat arrivals.

"The problem with a deterrent theory is that a deterrent only works if we make ourselves look nastier than the Taliban or the Rajapaksa government, and I'm not sure that that's something that most Australians want."

"The major deterrent for people seeking asylum here by boat is that it's very dangerous. The fact that people can and do die on their way here is one of the reasons that most of the people that get here by boat turn out to be, on assessment, actual refugees."

Jason Yat-Sen Li, hand-picked by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, last night denied any involvement with the pamphlet despite claims it was dropped into residents' letterboxes by an ALP supporter.
Rosie Dekker, a resident of Smith St, Ryde for 17 years, said yesterday she was disgusted by the material delivered by a man wearing a shirt supporting Jason Yat-Sen Li.

"I was outside my flat at the letterboxes talking to a neighbour and saw a young, tall Asian man wearing a red T-shirt," Ms Dekker said.
"All I saw on the shirt was Yat-Sen on the front and he was putting stuff in our letterboxes.
"I didn't pay much attention to it. My neighbour went to his letterbox and looked shocked when he looked at it. I read it and my temper rose, my blood pressure was about to hit the roof.''

Diana Day, 55, who has knee problems attempted to get Kevin Rudd's attention as he left the clinic following a visit this morning.

Mr Rudd shook hands with Ms Day but then did not take her question.

The Advertiser understands that Sheikh Sharif Hussein, who has previously been visited by Australia's intelligence services, is being investigated for potential "hate crimes".

The father-of-six, 55, was visited by police in Adelaide on Thursday and they told him authorities held "concerns" and "fears" for his safety.

Detectives are examining video of his sermon, believed to have been delivered in part at a tiny centre in Adelaide's west, in which he described Australian soldiers as "Crusader pigs" and called on Allah to kill Buddhists and Hindus "to the very last one".

Labor's Northern Territory Senate candidate says tackling Indigenous disadvantage will be a major priority for her if she is elected.

Nova Peris says she has visited 35 Indigenous communities across the Territory since the Olympian was hand picked for the top spot on the ALP Senate ticket by former prime minister Julia Gillard.

She says the tour has made her more aware of the problems facing Aboriginal people in the bush.
"The high level of unemployment, I think it is about 38 per cent, and the high incarceration rate, and health problems and the education issues," she said.

"I hope what I bring to the table is not only fresh ideas but the ability to listen to people.
"I have done that all my life."

Ms Peris and federal MP for the seat of Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, yesterday travelled to the central Australian Aboriginal community of Amoonguna, near Alice Springs, to asses employment there. 

They had been challenged at a campaign event at Alice Springs earlier in the day by community leader Marie Ellis over the high rate of unemployment at Amoonguna.

A visit to the community was hastily arranged and Ms Peris and Mr Snowdon spent time discussing issues of housing, unemployment and disadvantage with the locals.





Well they don't endeavour to do anything, or move to find work like I had to! Then you give them a place to live and they ruin it. Why should they be disadvantaged:- when they get more in study grant, easier access to apprenticeships and easier access to accommodation and to boot multinational corporations in the NT MUST take 20% Indigenous workforce regardless of ability to do work!




Mr Snowdon promised to investigate problems with government employment services in the community.
"Amoonguna, because of where it sits, has probably slipped off the radar and I don't think it has got the attention it deserves," he said.
