A CONTEST to find the most proud, beautiful anti-Semitic woman on a Russian Facebook page has been shut down. 
 
According to Vocativ, Nazis have been voting on photos of anti-Semitic women posted to an Adolf Hitler page on VKontakte, the Russian version of Facebook.

The page had more than 7,000 Russian and Ukrainian followers and recently opened voting for Miss Ostland 2014. About 24 contestants reportedly entered.

Josh Hardy, 21, was thrown to the pavement by two men who allegedly kicked him and stomped on his head as he lay there.

Kyle Zandipour, 27, and investment banker with ANZ, was charged with his murder late on Saturday night.



Zandipour was remanded in custody in an out of sessions court hearing.

He will face the Melbourne Magistrate's Courton on Sunday.

The hearing heard Zandipour and a second man, who police also questioned, had consumed alcoholic beverages and played Playstation at his St Kilda Rd home before walking to the nearby McDonald's for a midnight snack.


Homicide detective Snr Constable Julio Salerno told the hearing the pair purchased meals and sat outside the outlet about 12.15pm.

They were joined by Mr Hardy, who Senior Constable Salerno said "staggered" to the table in an "apparently inebriated" state and sat down with Zandipour and his friend.

Snr Constable Salerno said Josh appeared "a bit lost" and had a conversation with the two men. When the men got up to leave about 1.15am, Josh appeared to try to trip Zandipour over with his foot, the detective said.

Snr Constable Salerno said a fight broke out between Josh and Zandipour, during which the latter "used his arm to hook the deceased under his armpits and flip him" upside down. When Mr Hardy landed on the concrete, Zandipour allegedly kicked him several times and stomped on his head.

A post-mortem on Mr Hardy determined he had died as a result of head injuries sustained as the result of being assaulted.

The senseless death has left Josh's family reeling and they have pleaded for young people to think about the consequences of their actions.

His uncle, AFLNT board director Shaun Hardy, said the whole community had been affected by Josh's death.

"We can only hope that young people can learn something from such a senseless act of violence and such an unnecessary death.

"This is a young man in his prime. It's such a trivial issue at a takeaway place and all of a sudden someone is dead and won't be coming home."

Josh was studying arts on a Melbourne University scholarship and he hoped to move into law, a field where he believed he could make a genuine difference in the lives of Aboriginal people.

A MAN fired from a food processing plant beheaded a woman with a knife and was attacking another worker when he was shot and wounded by a company official, police said Friday.

Police Sgt Jeremy Lewis says police are waiting until 30-year-old Alton Nolen is conscious to arrest him in Thursday's attack and have asked the FBI to help investigate after co-workers at Vaughan Foods told authorities that he recently started trying to convert several employees to Islam.

Mr Nolen stabbed Colleen Hufford, 54, severing her head, Sgt Lewis said.

Sgt Lewis said Mr Nolen then stabbed Traci Johnson, 43, a number of times before being shot by Mark Vaughan, a reserve sheriff's deputy and the company's chief operating officer.

"This was not going to stop if he didn't stop it. It could have gotten a lot worse," Sgt Lewis said.

Sgt Lewis said that Moore police have asked the FBI to aid in the investigation and look into the man's background because of the nature of the attack, which comes in the wake of a series of videotaped beheadings by Islamic State militants.

Ms Johnson and the suspect were hospitalised and in stable condition on Friday, Sgt Lewis said. He does not yet know what charges will be filed.

LEGENDARY Australian rockers AC/DC have confirmed Malcolm Young has officially retired from the band as they reveal their new record Rock Or Bust will be released on November 28. 
 
The 15th studio record from the enduring band will be their first without Malcolm in their 40-year career.

As AC/DC gear up to unleash their first new tunes in six years, they stated Malcolm would not be touring or recording with them in the future.

"Unfortunately due to the nature of Malcolm's illness, he will not be rejoining the band," they said in a statement issued by their label Alberts and Sony Music Australia.

Rock Or Bust is the follow-up to their hugely successful 2008 album Black Ice, which sold eight million copies worldwide and debuted at No. 1 in 31 countries.

When launching his debut solo album last month, drummer Phil Rudd dismissed rumours that AC/DC had considered calling it a day in the wake of Malcolm's ill health.
"Angus Young will never retire," Rudd said.

"We were never going to retire. It'll never happen. Angus will never retire and as long as Angus never retires I won't f---ing retire either."

Rudd said Angus took on the songwriting duties solo in his brother's absence and next year's tour details were yet to be finalised.

A YOUNG Palmerston boy who was sucked into a drain has died. 
 
Eight-year-old Richard Baird was playing in a stormwater opening in Contalonieri Park off Wright Crescent, next to Gray Primary School on Sunday, when he was swept into a drain.

He was located about 500m from the drain and pulled from the water, where firefighters from Palmerston station and ambulance paramedics performed CPR.

He was rushed to hospital but did not regain consciousness.

THE father of the boy drowned in a Palmerston drain - who previously worked as a drain maintenance worker in another Territory shire - has told an inquiry drain maintenance in Palmerston has been substandard. 
 
Jason Baird took the stand on the second day of the coronial into the death of his 8-year-old son Richard in January.

Richard had been playing in flooded drains and got sucked 580m to his death.

Mr Baird, who previously worked as a drain maintenance worker for East Arnhem Shire Council, showed Coroner Greg Cavenagh photos of insecure Palmerston drain covers, and rusty bolts and securing straps, which were taken by him after the death.

A MORGUE attendant has admitted he may have had sex with as many as 100 female corpses. 
 
Kenneth Douglas, from the city of Hamilton, Ohio, was arrested, charged and sentenced to three years in prison in 2008 after DNA from his semen was found inside the body of murder victim, 19-year-old Karen Range. The crime only came to light after Range's murderer David Steffen appealed his conviction for murder and rape. He admitted killing Range but denied raping her.

Douglas pleaded guilty in 2012 to having sex with 23-year-old Charlene Appling on the day she died after being strangled while six months pregnant and having sex with another woman April Hicks. Douglas was sentenced for a further three years on each of the offences.

Now he has admitted to having sex with up to 100 dead women between 1976 and 1992 while he worked the night shift.

"I would just get on top of them and pull my pants down," Hamilton said in a deposition to the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

The extent of his crimes came to light as the families of Douglas's victims were told they could sue his employee, Hamilton County, by the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

Douglas said his behaviour was due to drug and alcohol abuse.

"If I wasn't drinking, or hadn't had anything to drink when I went to work, it wouldn't happen. I would do crack and go in and I would drink and go in," he said.

His wife Pat, also featured in a deposition video, stating that her husband "reeked of sex" when she picked him up from work and that she contacted someone at Hamilton County about her husband's behaviour but was dismissed.

"Marty said 'Pat, whatever happens on county property on county time is county business,'" she said.

Hamilton County ignored the warning signs, said Al Gerhardstein, one of the families' attorneys.

"The county had plenty of notice that Douglas was coming to work and was present at work while he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs," Gerhardstein said. "Had he been stopped, these women would not have been abused."

A VIOLENT riot and looting has erupted in Missouri, after a protest over the killing of an unarmed black teenager descended into chaos. 
 
Crowds of protesters broke windows of cars and stores after a day of demonstrations over the death of Michael Brown, an 18-year-old black teenager who was shot dead on Saturday by a police officer in the predominately black neighbourhood of Ferguson, located a few miles north of downtown St Louis, the Chicago Tribune reports.

At the time he was shot and killed by police, Brown was unarmed and allegedly surrendering with his hands in the air on Saturday.

A police officer shot him several times, killing him.

But, the St. Louis County Police Department's chief, which is handling the investigation into the incident, says Brown assaulted the officer and struggled over the officer's weapon.

IN 1956 promising boxer Les Davison, of the Dharawal people of Botany Bay, reached the qualifying round to represent Australia in the Melbourne Olympics, but was told to lose the match. 
 
"I said, 'why do you want me to lose?' And they said, 'because if you win you'll have the right to represent Australia in the Olympic Games, but you're not going to be allowed to'."
Former deputy prime minister John Anderson recounted the tale of racism that Davison told him when they first met "without bitterness and without rancour but with deep sadness" at the Garma indigenous festival in Arnhem Land on Monday.
Mr Anderson is a member of a federal review panel driving the push towards a referendum on constitutional recognition for indigenous people.
"As someone who believes that we as a people base our freedoms on a profoundly important and powerful idea, that every individual has worth, and dignity, and is worthy of respect and a full place in terms of their citizenship of this country, that was a shocking moment," he said of Mr Davison's experience.
Support for constitutional change has been strong from both sides of politics, with former prime minister Bob Hawke and Minister for Indigenous Affairs Nigel Scullion just two to back it over the weekend.
Senator Scullion said the reform "would be a real spear to the heart of racists in Australia" but stressed the need to take the time to raise awareness of the issue.
A recent poll shows 49 per cent of the public now know about the push for recognition.
Mr Anderson believes that "extraordinary stories told by ordinary people" such as Mr Davison would be the motivating force for Australians to vote yes in what will be the 45th referendum. They have a spotted history of success: only eight have been successful, most notably that of 1967, to include indigenous people in the census.

Senator Nova Peris sounded on the verge of tears as she told the audience at the forum that the referendum could not fail.

Sydney-based freelance writer Andrew P Street suggests that we try to fight racism with humour.

"It's fun to make fun of people being horrible," he told me. "That's what I love about the Left: we're a bunch of funny smartarses as opposed to a bunch of terrified bigots.

"That is our superpower and that's what we need to communicate."

It might not really seem fair to have a battle of wits with unarmed people, but Andrew has a point.

And he's acting on it with a brilliant plan to make up anti-racism bumper stickers to counter the sadly more common pro-racism ones with hilarious intellectual slogans like "F*** off we're full".

He's intending to create an add-on that says "of racist dickheads". And a positive one reading "People are awesome" that can be stuck right over the top of those charming xenophobic messages.

Sadly, the suggested "I heart Today Tonight" sticker will not be going into production for fear the message is too subtle.

Andrew says: "We need to point out how ridiculous this stuff is.

A MAN who was called a "f***ing Indian" and told he wasn't Australian because he was "not white" has said his patriotism has been hurt. 
 
The incident in which Waqas Haider was racially abused by a strip-club bouncer was caught on video.

His friend filmed the incident outside the site of the former Honey Pot Club on Darwin's Mitchell St in February.

The video is so full of expletives much of it has been censored, but in the raw footage the bouncer can be heard throughout the video taunting the man.

"You're a f***ing Indian mate. Have a respect for our country," he can be heard to say.

"Speak English.

"It's our country. Australia mate. White people."

Mr Haider was born in Pakistan, not India, grew up in the United Arab Emirates, and became an Australian citizen in 2013.
The argument allegedly started when 28-year-old Mr Haider complained about balloons allegedly put on the road by the bouncer, saying they could cause an accident.

Mr Haider had been guiding his friend around the city when the incident happened.

"I told him proudly that in this country you can walk through the roads independently with respect and dignity," he told the Sunday Territorian.

"I told him that everyone was equal here."

In the video, Mr Haider can be heard saying to the bouncer: "I'm f***ing Australian".

But the bouncer can be heard to say: "You're not white.

"Mate you're from f***ing India. You're from India mate. You're not even f***ing white.

"You're boat people."

The argument got heated, and Mr Haider accused the bouncer of being a "f***ing racist", to which the bouncer can be heard to say: "That's right, we're all f***ing racists."

"Go complain to the f***ing government, they'll kick you out".

A voice is heard to say: "Shut up you f***ing gook."

Mr Haider said his "patriotism is absolutely hurt".

"I sang (the Australian) anthem with full excitement and elation on the day when I was told by the Mayor that I am the Australian citizen and have equal rights as other Australians do. In fact, he proclaimed that 'Now you are one of us'," he told the Sunday Territorian.

"I believed in what he said and took Australia as my country. The country you want to spend the rest of your life, the country where you want to contribute the country where you want to raise your children and adapt its culture and represent it proudly in front of the rest of the world.'

Mr Haider has released the video because he said he has failed to get any satisfaction from other avenues that such an incident will never happen again.

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has come under fire for saying Australia was unsettled before British colonisation. 
 
Mr Abbott made the comments while addressing the Melbourne Institute, saying Australia was unimaginable without foreign investment.



"I guess our country owes its existence to a form of foreign investment by the British government in the then unsettled or, um, scarcely settled, Great South Land," he said today.

Labor's only indigenous parliamentarian, Senator Nova Peris, said the comments hindered efforts to have her people recognised in the constitution.

The comments were hurtful, dismissive of indigenous Australians and incorrect, she said.

Labor leader Bill Shorten said the comment was offensive, especially from a prime minister who claimed to be dedicated to indigenous affairs.

EVERY school should have an Islamic presence, clerics say. 
 
"I'm not saying we have to have an imam in every school ... but a presence," Abdul Sayed said.

"We actually have protocols and policies for religious activities in Government schools ... is that not giving us permission to be there?

"We wouldn't have those things in place if they were saying we don't want you there. They might want to kind of control us because they're a little bit scared about what's happening and what our motives are ..."

You can only imagine the jittery outrage if that were true. And it would be outrageous. But not because it's Islam, because it's religion.

Of course, it's actually Christians saying that Jesus should be in every classroom — the South Australian executive director of the Schools Ministry Group Angela Jolly says Christians "must" be involved in schools.

And they are, of course. The Federal Government's chaplaincy program — conceived under former Liberal prime minister John Howard and beefed up under the former Labor government — is delivering God to kids.

The funding model itself has hit some bumps after a Federal High Court finding that  the Government should not be shelling out $245 million for chaplains in schools,  but the Government seems intent on finding another way to ensure that it continues — which will probably mean funding chaplains through the states.

Not only did the Government boost the funding to ensure 3000 chaplains can work around the country, they ruled out having secular counsellors — which is how the program used to work.

So thousands of chaplains in schools. They're not meant to convert kids. But they have to be religious. You follow?

The Government should be crucified for that. The idea that chaplains — who clearly are there to turn people to Jesus even though they're not meant to proselytise — should be in charge of children's well-being is laughable.

Well, it would be laughable if it wasn't so serious. Like a bogus cancer cure, not only are they peddling crap, they're stopping people getting the help they really need.

There is plenty of evidence that they're there to convert kids. Take Ms Jolly's comments, for example, that Jesus must be in schools. And once they're in, it's not all generic Jesus talk about turning the other cheek or being excellent to each other.

It's also dangerous intolerance.

Gay and lesbian students say chaplains have told them to "pray the gay away". Outgoing Labor Senator Louise Pratt told Parliament last week that a survey of children found they'd been told homosexuality was a "degrading sin", and that they should sleep with someone of the opposite sex to "correct" themselves.

Most of the chaplains are probably lovely, genuine, caring people. And their faith is entirely genuine. Which means they believe, deeply, that children should be brought to Christ.

Whether they know they're selling snake oil or not, the end result is the same.

Everything they say is influenced by their belief in an omnipotent man in the sky, in the Bible, and in some cases by humbuggery like Creationism and virgin births.

The people who run the chaplaincy programs would argue that they don't convert. They're just there to provide counselling. Chaplains say they can help students deal with depression, suicide, drug abuse.

You know who else can provide counselling? Trained counsellors. Counsellors with no hidden agendas.

It's true that there are probably cases where having someone — anyone — to talk to might help a kid at risk. But that's no replacement for having someone specifically trained to deal with mental health issues.

It's like prescribing homoeopathy for cancer. It might feel good, but not only is it bunkum, it's bunkum that might stop someone getting what they need to save their lives.

AUSTRALIAN terrorists are calling on others to join the jihadist takeover of Iraq with further proof of their involvement, with the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIS) terror group found in a video released via the internet.

The revelation comes as officials in the Australian embassy in Baghdad go to a heightened sense of alert and have begun to remove or destroy documents to prevent them from falling into jihadists hands should the city fall.

Five Islamist fighters identified as Australian and British nationals have called on Muslims to join the war in Syria in a new video released by the ISIS and believed to have been filmed in Syria.

Titled There is No Life Without Jihad, the 13-minute film shows the five in a field bragging about their plans to take over Iraq and other countries.
The Australians identified themselves as Abu Yahya al-Shami and Abu Nour al-Iraqi, both from Australia.

As previously reported by News Corp Australia, intelligence services confirmed they first identified at least 12 Australians as having joined the ISIL and Jabhat al-Nusra terror groups back in about September last year.

Their having joined the jihadists was being reported by aid agencies and local people and confirmed by allied intelligence services that reported people bragging they had been from Australia.

The number now in Iraq with ISIS is unknown but is believed to be much higher than the initial dozen identified, with up to 300 Australians tracked entering Syria, via Turkey and Lebanon, to fight that rebel war.

In the video the five say they have jihadists joining their cause from all over the world including the UK, Australia and Cambodia.

"We are a State who is implementing the sharia (Islamic law) in both Iraq and Sham (Syria), and look at the soldiers — we understand no borders," one fighter said in English.

A caption said he was Abu Muthanna al-Yemeni from Britain.

"We have participated in battles in Sham, and we will go to Iraq in a few days, and we will fight there, Allah permitting, and come back, and we will even go to Jordan and Lebanon, with no problems."

The al-Qaeda black flag, that ISIL has been flying over swathes of Iraq since capturing key cities including Mosul, can be seen in the video whose authenticity is still being verified.

But one family of a 20-year-old British Jihadi in the recruitment video said they were "heartbroken" when they recognised their son.
The medical student Nasser Muthana can be seen wearing a turban and using the name Abu Muthana al-Yemeni.

A Ukrainian church in Sydney has been desecrated with racial slurs in an attack the NSW government has labelled vicious and abhorrent.

Members of the Ukrainian community woke on Saturday morning to find the St Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lidcombe covered in spray paint.
Among the vandalism is a swastika symbol and the word 'traitors fascists'.

Father Simon Ckuj said the church partly commemorated Ukrainians who fought against Nazism in World War Two. 'This act completely defiles the memory of those who died fighting fascism,' the parish priest said on Saturday.

From the outset, the City of Bankstown in south-western Sydney's sprawling migrant belt is a picture of multiculturalism. The geographic heartland of Australia's
100,000-strong Lebanese community, its red brick apartments and cement-sheet homes are peppered with mosques, musallas and churches.

Men of Middle Eastern appearance banter amicably in Arabic within tea rooms and coffee shops, while women wearing headscarves, hijabs and, on the odd occasion, burqas wheel prams through Centro, Bankstown's sparkling white shopping center.

But below the surface of this lower-middle class success story is a Middle Eastern ghetto terrorized by members of its community. Restaurateurs in Bankstown pay up to $50,000 a year in protection money or risk having their premises firebombed, while Shia and Sunni Muslims exchange invectives and blows on the streets. Crime families exchange gunfire and trade narcotics with apparent immunity; arrestees in Bankstown are 60 times more likely to use heroin than those in other parts in Australia. And an otherwise law-abiding majority erect a wall of silence when dealing with police they regularly accuse and sue for thuggery and racial profiling.

"In the last few decades unfortunately we have not had peace in Lebanon," Pierre Semaan, of the Australian Lebanese Christian Foundation, tells TIME. "Killing and shooting and illegal activity have become part of daily life. So the problem we have now in Sydney is a ramification of what has been going on in Lebanon."

That much was confirmed by Lieutenant Colonel Rony Ghanem of Lebanon's Internal Security Force. "We are afraid there is some connection between these guys here and the guys in Lebanon," he said during a three-month visit to Sydney earlier this year to exchange information on criminal syndicates with the New South Wales Police Force's Middle Eastern Crime Squad.

And "these guys" are well armed. There were 72 drive-by shootings in Sydney in the first half of this year — one every 2½ days — most of which took place in Bankstown, the City of Liverpool further west and in Sydney's inner-west. Drive-bys were virtually unheard of in Sydney until the mid-1990s, when the sons and grandsons of hardworking Lebanese migrants emerged as serious players in a world of organized crime, hitherto dominated by Vietnamese and Calabrian gangs.

"In the past there was a code among crime gangs in Sydney that bodies in the street were bad for business," says Michael Duffy, the author of Drive By, a new novel about a Lebanese crime family and the efforts of a bigoted, dispirited police force to lock them up. "But with drive-by shootings, the nature of criminality in Sydney has changed. That's what's so disturbing."

Selda Dagistanli, a lecturer in criminology at the University of Western Sydney, agrees that, "When you attach criminal behavior to ethnicity, that's racist, and it makes you question the motivation of the people saying it."

New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner Nick Kaldas says the problem in Bankstown and other parts of southwestern Sydney is not as bad as it seems. "There are certainly criminal groups you could describe as Middle Eastern in origin but the lines are now blurring," he tells TIME. "Criminals are coming together from a really diverse range of backgrounds to do bad things together." Nevertheless he acknowledges Middle Eastern organized crime in the city is not going to go away and more research is needed. "Before we can solve it we need to understand it," he says, "and I'm not sure we do."

Trad thinks the problem can be nipped in the bud by changing the way schools deal with Lebanese delinquents. While working as CEO of the Australian International Islamic College in Brisbane last year, he initiated a new program that saw problem students placed in a behavior-management room where they were closely supervised by an Islamic cleric.

"At first they resisted, but we made them believe that respect is something every child deserves, but that they needed to take action to earn that respect," he says. "What we found was that in a matter of weeks they were excelling the other kids in school. The improvement was remarkable ... Imagine what they would be capable of if they had a better start in life."

AUSTRALIA has got gun control right, says US President Barack Obama, while his own nation "should be ashamed" at its inability to address a surge in school shootings. 
 
The president vented frustration and disbelief that there was no momentum for gun reform in the wake of a recent spate of mass shootings, in impassioned remarks likely to touch off a new row with the powerful firearms lobby.

"Our levels of gun violence are off the charts, there is no advanced developed country on earth that would put up with this," the president said.



President Obama made the comments during a live question and answers session on the Tumblr web forum just hours after a gunman shot and killed a student at an Oregon High School in the latest shooting incident.

He pointed out that Australia hadn't had a single mass shooting since the crackdown on gun violence in the wake of 1996's Port Arthur shootings.

"We are the only developed country on earth where this happens, and it happens now once a week," he said.
The president said he had found it "stunning'' that new guns laws could not pass after the horror of the Newtown massacre in Connecticut which traumatised the country.

He said that the only way that the current status quo would change would be if public opinion influenced lawmakers, who he said were "terrified'' of the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA) lobby group.

THE sale of a horde of Nazi memorabilia in Adelaide has enraged the Jewish community, which argues money is being made from Holocaust survivors' misery. 
 
More than 30 German World War II  items were auctioned today, including a gas canister, ten large Nazi flags, Swastika -emblazoned SS  officer swords, Nazi volunteers' badge and a Waffen SS armband.

The items were offered as part of a 560-lot sale of several estates at a Kilkenny auction house, under instruction from a private collector whose Australian serviceman grandfather had gathered the memorabilia during World War II.

Some auction houses, such as online site eBay, ban the sale of items that "promote or glorify hatred (and) violence ..." such as Nazi and Nazi-related memorabilia.


eBay does not allow: "uniforms, uniform components, weapons, or other items that bear the Nazi swastika or SS runes, whether visible or covered".

Auctioneers Mason Gray Strange  are defending the sale, stressing it was neither endorsing the Nazi regime nor intended to cause offence.

But Jewish Community Council of South Australia president Norman Schueler said the auctioneers should have known better than to inflame horrific memories of the Holocaust  — the Nazi genocide of six million Jews during World War II.

"I would not like to think that people are trying to profit by trading on other people's misery," Mr Schueler said.

Mr Schueler said outrage at the sale of Nazi memorabilia should not be muted because almost 70 years had passed since the end of World War II.

"We must continue in schools and universities to make people aware of the worst crime perpetuated on man ever and not allow its memory to be dulled by time," he said.

Auctioneer Robert Hunkin said he had weighed the sale's ethics with the strong and legal demand for military memorabilia in Adelaide.

He said this was evidenced by the SS officers' swords selling to for between $500 and $700 apiece and the Nazi flags selling for between $200 and $500 apiece to militaria collectors.

"I don't intend to upset anyone. I just know that there's a significant following of people who do collect memorabilia," Mr Hunkin said.

It was unlikely his firm would sell items like this again, he said, given the strong reaction it had provoked from the Jewish community.

"I know of the stigma that's attached to this sort of militaria and I'm fully aware of history and the history of the Germans and the Nazis," Mr Hunkin said.

However, he said the sale went ahead without any prior objections, although Mr Hunkin conceded he had expected some debate.

Mr Hunkin said Australian militaria was most popular with Adelaide collectors and German memorabilia did not frequently come on the market.

A 30-year-old man sleeping in a dumpster had a rough wake up call. 
 
The man was collected by a waste disposal truck 7am yesterday.

He endured two more loads of rubbish being dumped on him before he was discovered in the back of the truck.

Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said the driver heard noises from the rear of the truck as he was pulling into the depot in Pinelands.

Emergency services attended and facilitated the rescue of the man, who was then conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital with shoulder injuries.

"He was very lucky not to have suffered serious injury as apparently a number of other collections were made after his dumpster was emptied," Duty Superintendent Jorgensen said.

"Information to hand is that the male had been sleeping in the dumpster — a practice which is never recommended."

St John Ambulance director of operations Michael McKay said the man suffered minor injuries.

"He had a minor head laceration and was treated for potential spinal injuries due to his fall," he said.

Territory taxi drivers are illegally fitting switches to their vehicles to manipulate their meters to run higher fares, it has been alleged. 
 
It has also been claimed that several taxi drivers are obtaining taxi plates through an underground subleasing system potentially worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The NT Government said yesterday it was aware of the claims and said a review of the Commercial Passenger Vehicle industry would specifically address the availability of taxi licences.

Transport Minister Peter Styles said in a statement that his department had contacted the Taxi Council regarding the issue of fare manipulation and would "continue to monitor taxi vehicles and their operation for compliance".

A Territory taxi operator told the NT News that the practice had been going on for some time.

The NT Government has placed a cap on the number of taxis operating in the Darwin and Alice Springs areas, and licenses are allocated by a ballot system. A taxi licence may only be allocated to a commercial passenger vehicle operator accredited under the Commercial Passenger (Road) Transport Act.

At the moment there are 112 standard taxis operating in Darwin, and 28 in Alice Springs.

The man said the subleasing practice was widespread in the industry and he was aware of 40 taxi plates that were owned by individuals and subleased by others.

He alleged some drivers who were successfully winning plates in the Government ballot would then sublease the plates for between $10,000 and $15,000 – on top of the $20,000 paid for the plate – to other individuals. He said some operators were doing this with more than one plate at a time.

The underground operation means there could be unlicensed taxi drivers on Territory roads. He also alleged some taxis could have their meters manipulated to run up to $1 more per kilometre. He said the cabbies were fitting non-approved switches to meters to achieve this.

Mr Styles said the Department had conducted inspections of taxis targeting hidden switches, but had found no evidence they were in use. However the NT News understands that eight taxis had been found to be carrying the switches.

He has upset the gay community with regular homophobic statements and was criticised by a mental health charity for a column he wrote about dealing with incidents of train-track suicide. ("Change the driver, pick up the big bits of what's left of the victim, get the train moving as quickly as possible and let foxy woxy and the birds nibble away at the smaller, gooey parts that are far away or hard to find.")

As we send this to you, we are advised that some party members have injuries for their participation in today's demonstration action. We fought a veritable street battle today. We certainly did not seek it. In the defence of freedom of speech and assembly, it is no evil thing to be involved in a street fight. We recall the organized thuggery designed to shut down Hanson in the 1990's.



I believe that we have politically won today's fight (and I say that for a multitude of reasons), but it is what shall follow which will certainly prove the point. I shall not say anything further on that here, but I promise that next week will be a very busy one.



On the behalf of the whole party I commend all who participated in today's action and I send our best wishes to those who sustained injuries of any type. I understand there was a broken finger, some bruises, a split lip and other minor wounds. These are badges of courage and honour.



We shall report to you all further as matters develop. Suffice to say that the party has already received several strong enquiries today and sympathetic groups have rallied to us in solidarity. That in particular – is to the good.



Antifa Counter-Rally Against Australia First A Total Flop: A Gang Of CFMEU Affiliated Thugs, Incite Some On A Building Site To Violence And Riot



Contrary to our first report at 1.30 pm, which we will leave below as it contains relevant data, the so-called 'Antifa' and extreme-left counter-rally against Australia First in Brisbane today – was a total flop.



At no time did their counter-rally mass more than about 50 persons.



What was decisive in the events of the day was a small group of CFMEU leaders with some shop-steward associates all of whom lurked about from the start. Whomsoever the leaders were, they were not small-fry in the union's affairs.



Almost at once, as the initial group of Australia First supporters began to assemble at South Brisbane's Musgrave Park, there were threats of violence and scuffles and the theft of a flag by this CFMEU gang.



However, at a certain point about twenty minutes later, some of these CFMEU officials and stewards entered two building sites situated very close by and told the workers – 'something'. We are yet to establish what this 'something' was. However, we have some reason to believe that they were told that we were supporters of Campbell Newman's laws on associations and that we were opposed to trade unions. Hardly.



Once organized around the lies of the CFMEU organizers, a stream of persons left their work on the sites and joined in a series of assaults; some others who also left the sites just stood by and watched. Australia First members were compelled to punch on with about thirty persons. Although some of our members sustained some minor injuries, they gave as good as they took, which was positive!



It is our opinion, today's attack was premeditated. Most likely it was planned yesterday, after Antifa contacted the CFMEU. A certain leader of the Antifa contingent today boasted a couple of days ago, that she "would involve the union". It was planned yesterday, because these CFMEU officials knew of the building sites nearby the Australia First assembly point and were able to strategically plan their response.



This certainly appears ironic!



Now, if readers go to the website of the CFMEU (Queensland), they will see an advertisement right at the top 'against the use of contract labour' in Australia. Which is something that Australia First has railed against for many years - as is the case with all Nationalist political groups from the 1860's. Yet, it appears that a pathetic liberal clique has infiltrated the very core of the CFMEU and they've abandoned that policy, because it serves the Labor Party and its immigration policy.



It is significant that at this time of the assaults many of the police in the area seemed to 'disappear'. Certainly, no one was arrested.



It is understood that one Australia First member is a unionist and has contacted his union about the assaults not long after they occurred. This union disavowed the alleged actions of the CFMEU gang and said it "would investigate behaviour on the sites and determine if anyone knew of the matter or had breached work rules".



In due course, the Australia First members withdrew from the area to relocate the demonstration to the city as had been planned. This was done by a circuitous route and will report on that another time.



However, this deranged clique of CFMEU dross did not let the matter rest there. Because some hours later, after the Australia First members had been into the city (by another route to protest), they were stalked by a group of men at a hotel in Wolloongabba. The dozen or so activists who had moved on there after the rest dispersed, were enjoying a quiet drink and discussing the day. Suddenly, half a dozen men stormed into the hotel and launched into a violent assault upon the activists. Before they could effectively fight back several blows were landed and the hotel disrupted. The men then fled on foot. It is understood there is CCTV footage of the attack.



A couple of activists experienced minor cuts. However, their spirit was undeterred!



The responsibility for these two phases of violence today does not rest with any worker who was tricked into action by the CFMEU leader-group. It rests with this small core of union officials and organizers. That must be so, as no ordinary worker or union man would deal with the anarchist psychos or accept their call to violent action.



This group of leaders must also be eminently identifiable. Whether they are ever identified in the 'normal' way is uncertain. However, Australia First will certainly not allow the matter to rest.



It's clear that a small gang of union leaders committed an overarching crime today. But worse than any crime, it was a blunder. Where the affair will lead, many can guess, but it will not be Australia First Party which comes off with any 'loss'.



The Antifa cowardice was in some ways expected. Safely away from us waving flags and shouting slogans, they did not do any of the hard work of the day. It was left to a small deranged gang. We respect them for their 'honesty'.

SOUTH Australia could have different income tax rates to the rest of the country and the lowest minimum wage on the mainland, if key recommendations from the Commission of Audit are adopted. 
 
Under changes to minimum pay rates, low-income earners in SA would eventually earn up to $85 less per week than workers in other states doing the same jobs.

The commissioners suggested that state-based income taxes be reintroduced for the first time since uniform taxation was established by the federal government during World War II.

The commissioners said the federal government should reduce personal income tax rates, possibly by about 10 per cent and cut some payments to the states and territories.

Other recommendations call for a change to the way the minimum wage is calculated.

Within a decade, low-paid workers would be entitled to the lower of a new "benchmark'' or 44 per cent of average weekly earnings in their state.

By 2023, South Australia would have a $637 per week minimum wage while low-paid Tasmanians would earn $622.

Victoria would have a $681 per week minimum wage, Queensland $702 and the other states and territories $722.

The commissioners argued that linking minimum wages to local economic conditions would make it more affordable for employers to take on extra staff.

TASMANIA must harness its tourism kudos overseas to boost its permanent population, multiculturalism advocates say. 
 
Before the election, Premier Will Hodgman pledged to boost skilled migrant numbers and encourage more overseas students to stay.

The Multicultural Council of Tasmania, the University of Tasmania and the Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Australia are urging the State Government to "get moving".

"What's needed now is some meat on the bones of that commitment," Multicultural Council of Tasmania chief executive Anna Reynolds said.

She called on the Government to sponsor more skilled migrants — to ease their visa processes, as was commonly done in South Australia and Western Australia.

The SA Government also funds billboards and other advertising encouraging overseas students to live and work in the state after graduation.

Mr Hodgman said his Government was dedicated to boosting the state's migrant population.

"That's one of the reasons why I participated in the recent national trade delegation to Asia. I was able to hand-deliver that message to our strongest trading partners."

Immigration Department figures show more than 30 per cent of SA's skilled migrants are state-sponsored, compared with 10 per cent in Tasmania.

Ms Reynolds said Tasmania was well behind in cultural diversity.

"Just 12 per cent of our residents were born overseas, compared to the national average of over 24 per cent,'' she said.

Migrants brought skills, fresh perspectives, money and connections, as well as new demand for local services and products, she said.
