Still Buying Silver

There has been a lot going on in the investment world lately, let me get you caught up.

I have urged my subscribers to buy silver for some time now. Silver has gone absolutely nuts lately. All the publicity has been about gold, but gold has done nothing compared to what silver is doing.

Gold has been diddling somewhere around $1,400 an ounce (up from $300 an ounce when I turned bullish). Silver hit $30 on Monday which is up from $12 an ounce, from $30 when I became bullish.

I believe silver will explode for years, and we ain't seen nothin yet! If you who bought silver coins trying to build your estate, you will do very well indeed.

Although gold gets all the publicity and I write a lot about gold, that doesn't mean that's what I want you to buy. The average person can't afford to pay over $1,400 an ounce for gold, but can pay $30 an ounce for silver.
My main concern is to get you through the uncertain, difficult times ahead in good shape. If things continue their present course, the world will have more difficulties than any of us bargained for.

I don't know how long that will last. I only know that it will last a while, and silver will protect you. I will let you know when it's time to take profits. We may hold our silver for many years to come.

In any event, buy silver now and commit to buying more as long as it in a decent price range. Up to $100 an ounce is that price range.

My wife is Russian and her best friend from there, a medical doctor, just returned to her Mother Russia after a three-week visit with us. She went on an excursion to see sites of New York at the end of her trip, booked out of Brighton Beach. I warned her that it would not likely be a Russian agency out of BB, and, as it turned out for her, I was right. Natasha has since told us just how Jewish the experience was, and how disappointing for her. She hated New York and said it's a rude, Jewish city.

One accurate point from this Jewish article is that many Russian emigres -- non-Jew -- are, in fact, economic refugees of a sort since there are few opportunities for advancement in economically depressed Russia. Materialism is a problem for these Russian newcomers, but that can change as they assimilate. Russian nationalism is White and racist, and, unlike with U.S. White nationalists, strong.

On the boardwalk in Brighton Beach last weekend, it was "From Russia With ... Loathing."

For members of the Russian Jewish community here, the recent tabloid-enhanced saga of the 10 alleged Russian spies arrested here in late June and flown to Moscow last week in a swap for four Russians charged with spying for the U.S., exposed a raw nerve.

In interviews with Russian-speakers strolling on the boardwalk and with prominent members of the Russian Jewish community here, what emerged is a portrait of a community deeply disturbed by the affair. But it is angered less by the revelations about a group of ineffectual gumshoes than by the perception that they themselves had managed to escape Russia to start new lives in America, only to find that Russia has followed them here.

Specifically, they connected the spies with a wave of emigration from the countries of the former Soviet Union that in recent years has been predominantly non-Jewish. And the new emigrants seemingly include many people who came here less for political or religious freedom than out of a desire to get ahead financially in various ways, not all of them savory — all of which has led to deep changes in the character of the Brighton Beach community.

"The whole story is very unpleasant for people like me," said Sophia Tonstonog, an 81-year-old retiree from Lvov in western Ukraine. "My husband and I fled the Soviet Union 20 years ago to escape anti-Semitism and now those who persecuted us are moving here after us. Why should all these non-Jewish Russians be allowed to come here? They have their own country, and as this spy story shows, letting them come here is not so good for America."

Olga, 51, a doctor of internal medicine and her husband Alexander, a 53-year-old programmer, who arrived together from Moscow in 1992, were equally blunt. "These disgusting spies have no connection with us yet besmirch the reputation of the entire community," said Olga, who like her husband asked that their last names not be used because of the sensitivity of the issue.

"What is more upsetting is that Brighton Beach, a neighborhood in which we loved living, is now filling up with non-Jewish Russians and Ukrainians."

Alexander added, "Everywhere you look in Brighton these days, you see Russian-speaking people wearing crosses or selling Russian Orthodox or Baptist books on the street. In short, this is no longer a Jewish neighborhood and won't be in the future either.

"Olga and I are now thinking about moving to a more Jewish place, like Great Neck."   

The sharp comments on the boardwalk — echoed by many others who asked that their names not be used — suggest that an ongoing process of de-Judaization of the New York Russian-speaking community is continuing apace. Jewish emigration from the FSU to New York since 2000 has dropped precipitously, while emigration by non-Jews has trended upward. (Unlike Jews, most non-Jewish former Soviets are not eligible to come here as refugees, but many have taken up residence as parolees, green card lottery winners, spouses of American citizens, and holders of work and student visas who have stayed on.)

In 2007, sociologist and demographer Sam Kliger, who heads the Research Institute of New Americans and is director of Russian Jewish Affairs at the American Jewish Committee, estimated that the percentage of the Russian-speaking community in the New York metropolitan area (estimated at about 750,000 people) that is Jewish had dropped from over 90 percent to around 65 percent over the preceding decade. And anecdotal evidence suggests that the percentage may have dropped even further in the years since.

The change has been especially jarring in heavily Russian-speaking Brighton Beach and surrounding communities, as many younger Russian Jews have moved out to more upscale locations, to be replaced by predominantly non-Jewish Russian speakers.

Writing in the weekly Russian Advertising last week, journalist Leah Moses, who has chronicled the new wave of immigrants, said, "The people who were arrested as spies seemed somehow representative of many people who have come in recent years primarily to improve their economic situation. ... One steals from someone else's bank account, another marries for money and another is a spy. Members of our community should think twice before ... getting involved with those who came from post-Soviet countries mainly to grab something for themselves."

In comments to The Jewish Week, Moses added, "This is not necessarily about Jews and non-Jews but about a materialistic mentality that pervades the third [post-2000] wave of Russian-speaking emigration. Still it is clear that a majority of third-wave arrivals are non-Jewish. They don't particularly love America, and are genuinely surprised when they find out our community is pro-American."

Mikhail Nemirovsky, editor of Forum, a Russian language pro-Israel weekly and director of Russian-speaking outreach at the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater New York, said that the spy affair, "shows that regimes may fall and even the country may change names, but the KGB remains the KGB — even if it is now called FSB."

Of the spies themselves, Nemirovsky said, "These people are not from our community. No one knows them. When their real names were finally published in place of the American aliases they had previously been identified by, I breathed a sigh of relief and said, 'Thank God, none of them are Jewish.'"

Nemirovsky was asked about the fact that four years ago a number of leading Russian-American Jews played prominent roles in a Kremlin-inspired organization known as the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots in the U.S. Many of them eventually left the organization as then-President Vladimir Putin moved Russia in a more authoritarian and anti-American direction. "Being Russian compatriots is not for Jews," he said. "Yet there are many non-Jewish Russian-speakers around New York these days for whom Russia is their true motherland." 

Alec Brook-Krasny, the first Russian-speaking member of the New York State Assembly, who has served a heavily Russian-speaking south Brooklyn district, including Brighton Beach, since 2007, has a similar perspective. "The community doesn't like this spy story, which obviously hurts its image, though hopefully not for a long time. But, in reality, these people had nothing to do with the Russian Jewish community.

"We are a Jewish community that has no loyalty to Russia — either to the Soviet regime many of us fled or the Russian government of today."

Recalling that he himself was involved in conversations with a prominent Russian diplomat in the early 2000s about strengthening Russian-American cooperation in the war against terrorism, Brook-Krasny said, "Back then, I was under the impression that our community could play a role in helping to bring the two countries closer together. Nowadays I am more leery.

Igor Boboshkin, an ethnic Russian publisher and businessman based in Staten Island, who serves as president of the Russian-American Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots, seemed less inclined than his Russian-Jewish counterparts to concede that the 10 arrested on espionage charges here and deported to Russia were necessarily guilty of anything.

"In fact, we don't know if they were spies or not. ... There is no solid evidence that they gave information to Russian intelligence. This is a scandal organized by the media and indeed after the swap, it appears that relations between U.S. and Russia are good. Given all of that I don't think there will be any negative impact on our organization."

Noting that the Compatriots group is an umbrella body for a network of grass-roots Russian-language schools, kindergartens, cultural centers and publications in cities across the U.S., Boboshkin disputed the notion that Russian Jews have dropped away in recent years. "I would say about 30 percent of the people on our coordinating committee are Jewish. But we are a non-sectarian organization and no mention is made of a person's nationality or religion."

Back on the boardwalk, Natalia Egorova, a 40ish freelance makeup artist from Moscow, who moved to Brooklyn by way of Switzerland 10 years ago, stood out among the largely elderly Russian-Jewish crowd because of her striking blonde mane and large cross around her neck. She said that the spy scandal has so far had minimal effect on either her personal or professional life because, "The people I deal with are too sophisticated to cast aspersions on all Russians." She added, "I love living in Brighton Beach, both for the sea and the cosmopolitan atmosphere."

Bill Kristol's 'Emergency Committee?' Give me a break

Via Ben Smith at Politico, we learn that the usual suspects have started yet another organization whose objective is to promote a hard-right, Likudnik agenda in the Middle East. The new group apparently intends to go after anyone who thinks U.S. Middle East policy has been less than totally successful in recent years, and who is willing to think for themselves (and U.S. interests), instead of reflexively echoing the positions favored by AIPAC and other groups in the "status quo" lobby.

To be more specific, Smith reports that hardline neoconservatives such as [Jews] William Kristol, Michael Goldfarb, Noah Pollak, and Rachel Abrams have joined forces (again) with rightwing Christian evangelical Gary Bauer to establish a new group: the "Emergency Committee for Israel." The group says it is going to target candidates in key Senate and Congressional races, along with the Obama administration. It is directing its initial salvo (in the form of a TV ad) at Congressman Joe Sestak (D-PA), who defeated incumbent Arlen Spector in the Democratic primary and is now running for the Senate. Sestak was targeted because he had the temerity not to sign an AIPAC-sponsored letter awhile back, and though he's a strong defender of Israel, he's been critical of Israel's counterproductive blockade of Gaza.

The ironies here are remarkable. For starters, you have some of the same geniuses who dreamed up and sold the Iraq War -- one of the dumbest blunders in the annals of U.S. foreign policy -- joining forces with someone who thinks U.S. Middle East policy ought to be based on his interpretation of Old Testament prophecy. They're going after a retired three-star admiral in the U.S. Navy, who also happens to have a Ph.D. in political economy and international affairs from Harvard. Given their track record over the past decade, this is actually a stunning endorsement of Sestak's candidacy. Criticism from these folks is like having Lindsay Lohan complain about your lifestyle choices, or having BP president Tony Hayward offer advice on environmental safety and public relations.

What is even more ironic is the group's paranoid name: the "Emergency Committee." Its members must think Israel is in real trouble, but what they don't seem to realize is that it is their advice that has helped lead to its current difficulties.  Israel has been following the Likudnik/neoconservative/Christian Zionist program for several decades now, with vocal backing from the likes of Kristol, Pollak and Bauer, and the United States has been providing it with unconditional support for this self-destructive course.

Contrary to what many people think, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not win a great political victory over President Obama during their little love-fest last week. Sure, Obama has largely abandoned his early insistence that Israel stop building settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and he's made it clear that his administration won't use U.S. pressure to bring about a genuine two-state solution. Contrary to his early rhetoric, Obama is proving to be just like most of his predecessors, and for essentially the same reason.

Last week was a tactical win for Bibi but yet another strategic misstep, because, as his predecessor Ehud Olmert and current Defense Minister Ehud Barak have both acknowledged, only a viable two-state solution can prevent Israel from becoming a full-fledged apartheid state. This development will force the Palestinians to seek full political rights within this "greater Israel." And as Olmert warned back in 2007, "once that happens ... the state of Israel is finished." 

As Jerome Slater pointed out on his own blog last week, the reason Obama couldn't do the right thing was the power of the lobby, and that includes the endless machinations of folks like Kristol and Bauer. They are right to think that Israel is in deep trouble and that it's likely to get worse. What they don't get is that it is to a large extent their fault.

Bottom line: If you want to kill off any prospect for peace, ensure that Israel's current difficulties multiply, and reinforce anti-Americanism throughout the region, by all means back any of the candidates that the "emergency committee" endorses.

This is part of the videotape showing Russian Navy commandos on a Somalia pirate ship. You may remember that the pirates captured a Russian oil tanker.
The EuroUnion navy that patrols these waters could not interfere because there could be casualties.

All explanations are in Russian and, with a single exception when a wounded pirate tells something in English, all conversations are between  the commandos, in Russian.

If you don't understand Russian, the pictures speak  for themselves.

The soldiers freed their compatriots, moved all the pirates to  their own (pirate) ship, searched the pirate ship for weapons and explosives, and took  seven Somalia pirates.
Then they left the ship and exploded it with all remaining pirates on it.

The commandos sunk the majority of the pirates without any court  proceedings, lawyers, etc. That is, they used the anti-piracy laws of the 18th  and the 19th centuries.
The captain of the rescuing ship has the right to decide what to  do with the pirates.

Usually, they were hanged.

A North Idaho attorney long connected to hate groups like the Aryan Nations has been charged by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Coeur d'Alene in a murder-for-hire plot to kill his wife and mother-in-law.

Edgar J. Steele was arrested Friday at his Sagle residence — the same day he wanted his wife and her mother to be killed in a pre-arranged car crash meant to look like an accident, according to an affidavit filed with the federal court.

"The United States Magistrate had found probable cause for the offense," said Traci Whelan, an assistant U.S. Attorney. "As for the timing of the arrest, it was prudent given he had apparently set a deadline for it today."

According to the court documents, a confidential witness approached the FBI on June 9 and told agents Steele had asked the witness to kill the two women.

The witness, who worked for Steele, said six months earlier Steele had initiated a conversation about a list of people he wanted killed, including his wife and her mother. The witness agreed to the plot and accepted money, court documents say.

The witness told the FBI Steele paid $500 in cash for travel expenses and promised as much as $25,000 if the murders were completed on Friday, June 11. According to the affidavit, Steele promised the witness another $100,000 if an insurance policy paid out after his wife's murder.

Court documents show the informant was wired during conversations with Steele, who told the witness the murders must be completed on Friday because of an alibi, court documents said.

"Prior to the interview ending, Edgar Steele told (the witness) that he has no second thoughts and he wants the plan carried out," the affidavit says."This statement was made multiple times during the meet."

The court documents say Steele told the informant if they were caught he would deny knowing them. But if the informant was caught and did not implicate Steele, the informant's family would be compensated.

It is unclear why Steele was targeting his wife. Wheelan said she believed the couple was still married and was not separated. Steele's wife was visiting or helping out with a health care issue at her mother's house in Oregon, Wheelan said.

Whelan said the complaint is just a charging document and is not proof of guilt. Steele will likely appear at a preliminary hearing on Monday, Whelan said. The case must yet go before a grand jury.

"Neither the FBI or U.S. Attorney's Office would proceed in a case where we didn't feel there was proof to charge," Whelan said.

Steele is in custody on federal felony charges, Whelan said, but she declined to reveal where he is being held.

According to his website, Steele is an author and trial lawyer who graduated from the UCLA School of Law. His law practice is "noteworthy for cases that test the limits of constitutional law on behalf of politically incorrect clients."

He is noted for his unsuccessful defense of the Aryan Nations and its founder Richard Butler in a multi-million dollar lawsuit brought against them in 2000. Steele has expressed his anti-Semitic and racist views in online rants and in the book "Defensive Racism: An Unapologetic Examination of Racial Differences."

Steele said he has appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Early Show, Fox News, Dateline, NBC Nightly News, Court TV, Geraldo and CNN in connection with both his writing and the high-profile cases he has handled.

Last year, in response to the shooting at the Holocaust Memorial Museum of a security guard by neo-Nazi James von Brunn, Steele said, "Why did Von Brunn choose to unload at the National Holocaust Museum? Because it is an edifice to one of the most stupendous lies of modern times, paid for and maintained with taxpayer dollars, that's why."

He has also represented controversial clients like the McGuckins, a North Idaho family who held off police seeking to take custody of several children during a standoff in 2001. He also sought to overturn Idaho's hate crime laws.

For a man who's obsessed with tiny critters, Edward O. Wilson has a strange knack for stirring up controversy about life's biggest questions. The Harvard biologist is a renowned expert on insects, co-author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book "The Ants." But it was his seminal 1975 book "Sociobiology," which laid the groundwork for the new field of evolutionary psychology, that made Wilson a scientific luminary -- and a major intellectual force in America. That book, along with its Pulitzer Prize-winning sequel, "On Human Nature," argued that many human behaviors -- including aggression, altruism and hypocrisy -- are shaped by evolution. Wilson's tilt toward nature in the age-old nature/nurture debate may have put him on the map, but it also made plenty of enemies. Fellow Harvard biologists Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Lewontin denounced sociobiology, saying it provided a genetic justification for racism and Nazi ideology. Wilson's classes were picketed. In one famous incident, demonstrators at a scientific meeting stormed the stage where he was speaking and dumped a pitcher of water over his head, chanting, "Wilson, you're all wet!"

Over the years, sociobiology -- once so controversial -- became a widely accepted branch of science. Ultimately, Wilson won the National Medal of Science for his scholarship. And his own popularity soared when he emerged as a champion of biodiversity and a passionate advocate for endangered species. His 1992 book "The Diversity of Life" became a bestseller. But he stirred up more trouble in the late '90s with another book, "Consilience." This was his attempt to outline a unified theory of knowledge, which had the effect of elevating science at the expense of religion and the arts. In his view, knowledge of the world ultimately comes down to chemistry, biology and -- above all -- physics; people are just extremely complicated machines. Wendell Berry, among other critics, railed against Wilson's scientific reductionism, calling it a "modern superstition."

Wilson is now retired, though -- at 76 -- he still spends plenty of time at his Harvard lab. And he continues to write and lecture. He recently edited a collection of Charles Darwin's books titled "From So Simple a Beginning" (W.W. Norton). In person, Wilson is a courtly Southerner. He's an affable man who laughs easily and -- unlike many scientists -- is quite willing to speculate on the most cosmic questions. This was evident when he stopped by my radio studio before giving a sold-out lecture at the University of Wisconsin. We talked about Darwin and the growing rift between science and religion, as well as Wilson's own take on religion -- his "provisional deism" and his personal horror of an eternal afterlife in heaven.

What were the personal and intellectual qualities that made Darwin such a great scientist?

A relentlessly inquiring mind, a love of natural history acquired as a child, the extraordinary opportunity presented by the voyage of the Beagle to travel around the world at exactly the right age when the mind is opening, the opportunity in the scientific world to make a major discovery, and -- I should not overlook -- being a country squire with no economic pressures.

Did he have any particular agenda when he set out on his voyage on the Beagle?

I don't think so. He was a deeply religious man. He hadn't thought about evolution at all. What he was was an all-purpose observer, with a particular interest in natural history, and of course in beetles, which were the love of his life.

And it's worth pointing out that when Darwin first set out on the Beagle, he brought his own Bible. He had to overturn his whole upbringing to come up with this revolutionary idea.

Darwin departed England a devout Bible literalist. After failing his effort to become a doctor, he had in fact trained as a minister at Cambridge University. As he says in his autobiography, he would even pull out the Bible to settle some argument with other members of the ship's crew. But then as the trip went on, for reasons Darwin really never disclosed but I don't think had to do with the idea of evolution, he gradually dropped his Christian beliefs. Becoming a man of the world and much more aware of other cultures and religious beliefs, he realized that the stories of the Bible were basically no different than the stories of these other religions.

But what really turned him against religion was the doctrine of damnation. He said if the Bible is true, you must be redeemed in Christ and be a believer in order to go to heaven. And others will be condemned. And that includes my brothers and all my best friends. And he said that is a damnable doctrine. Those are his words.

Darwin's own transformation from devout Christian to non-believer obviously raises significant questions in our own time. It raises a very provocative question: If you fully accept the theory of evolution by natural selection, does that logically lead you to atheism?

Well, it does up to the origin of the mind and spirit. And one of the Vatican's scientific spokesmen, incidentally, just recently turned thumbs down on intelligent design. John Paul II took the position that evolution's been pretty well proved, and certainly was acceptable as God's way of creating the diversity of life. But the human soul was injected by God. So that's a kind of compromise position that a lot of devoutly religious people have taken.

But that begs the question, when did the soul enter? I mean, if you accept evolution, at some point humans evolved out of something that came before. So do all creatures have some kind of soul? Or do only humans have a soul?

Yeah, that's the dilemma. Of course, there is no reconciliation between the theory of evolution by natural selection and the traditional religious view of the origin of the human mind.

Are you saying we have to choose between science and religion?

Well, you have to choose between the scientific materialist view of the origin of the mind on the one side, and the traditional religious view that the spirit and the mind are independent of the process of evolution and eventually non-corporeal, capable of leaving the body and going elsewhere.

This is not a view that all scientists subscribe to. Stephen Jay Gould famously talked about how science and religion are two entirely separate spheres. And they really didn't have anything to do with each other.

Yeah, he threw in the towel.

He dodged the question.

He dodged the question, famously. That's no answer at all. That's evasion. I think most scientists who give thought to this with any depth -- who understand evolution -- take pretty much the position that I've taken. For example, in the National Academy of Sciences, which presumably includes many of the elite scientists in this country, a very large number would fully accept the scientific view. I know it's 80 percent or more who said, on the issue of the immortality of the soul, they don't care.

It would seem that religion and science have two entirely different ways of understanding the world. Science is founded on reason and deduction and empirical study. Religion, on the other hand, is grounded in faith -- often a leap of faith, in mystery, in living with the non-rational part of your mind. Are those two utterly alien ways of looking at the world? Or is there any common ground?

The only common ground that I see is the one that was approached by Darwin himself. Religious belief itself is an adaptation that has evolved because we're hard-wired to form tribalistic religions. Religion is intensely tribalistic. A devout Christian or Muslim doesn't say one religion is as good as another. It gives them faith in the particular group to which they belong and that set of beliefs and moral views.

What about the sense of awe, of wonder? That's something you hear about all the time among religious people. And you also hear about it from some scientists as well.

Well, you do. You hear about it from me. Awe is hard to put into words. But it certainly involves a sense of the mightiness and splendor and almost indecipherable intricacy of something greater than ourselves. A lot of religious mysticism arises directly from it. But it's equally experienced by the secularist whose mind opens to the splendor and intricacy of the material universe.

I've talked with some atheists who've suggested what they really need is a spiritual atheism. They need the sense of awe. They're competing with religious traditions, with very powerful stories, that have been passed down through the ages.

Yeah, that's true.

Does the scientist, does the non-believer, need that as well? Can the non-believer have that?

The answer to the second question is yes. The answer to the first question -- do they have it? -- is usually no. The problem with secular humanism is that it does lack it. I think it was Camille Paglia who talked about Foucault and the almost religious awe that the French post-structuralist philosophers once had in France. She compared it to the power of the Judeo-Christian tradition and said 3,000 years of Yahweh beats one generation of Foucault.

Would you be comfortable saying that science can have a sacred dimension?

Sacred, yes, in the sense of spirituality. This would be based upon a deeper understanding of just how intricate and surprising the universe is. The story of the origin of life on this planet -- the time scale, the magnitude of it, the complexity of how it has been put together -- all of that engenders in me even more awe than I ever felt as a devout Southern Baptist growing up.

You grew up in a religious family?

Oh yes, I grew up fundamentalist. I grew up as a Southern Baptist with strict adherence to the Bible, which I read as a youngster. As a child, I was warned by counselors and routine religious training that the truth was in the Bible. Redemption was only in Christ and the world is full of Satanic force. Satan himself perhaps -- but certainly his agents, witting and unwitting -- would try to make me drop my belief. I had that instilled in me. You have to understand how powerful the religious drive is -- the instinct which I consider tribalist but probably necessary -- in most societies for continuing day-to-day business.

That's an interesting perspective. Basically, you're saying it's necessary but it's wrong.

Well, you see, that's the dilemma of the 21st century. Possibly the greatest philosophical question of the 21st century is the resolution of religious faith with the growing realization of the very different nature of the material world. You could say that we evolved to accept one truth -- the religious instinct -- but then discovered another. And having discovered another, what are we to do? You might say it's just best to go ahead and accept the two worldviews and let them live side by side. I see no other solution. I believe they can use their different worldviews to solve some of the great problems -- for example, the environment. But generally speaking, the difficulty in saying they can live side by side is a sectarianism in the world today, and traditional religions can be exclusionary and used to justify violence and war. You just can't deny that this is a major problem.

To return to your personal history, when did you reject that early fundamentalist belief? When did you start to question the literal interpretation of the Bible?

THE BAD-MOUTHER

Around the bonfire, in the midst of a small group, or even on the front liner or at the top of a group or organisation, there sits the potential for a cunning & crafty lipped devil. The type of person who only talks bad about other people in the White Power movement. This person says one thing to one person & say a completely contradictory thing to another person. His lips are constantly flapping. A veritable soap opera of never ending double talk, innuendo, rumour mongering & manoeuvring constitutes this persons' entire universe. They have one goal & one goal only: to uplift themselves by destroying others in the movement. Usually this person cares nothing for the movement or his/her race. They are probably profiteers, leeches & bloodsuckers who have a financial interest as a primary motivator. They blame their own inadequacies on others. They cover their own mistakes by pointing fingers. They can never take responsibilities for their actions because the bad-mouther is a pathological liar who believes his own lies. They are obsessively covetous. Any attempt to alert the bad-mouther of his ways will only be seen by the bad-mouther as part of the game, another ploy in the chess match. Years of therapy might help unravel the meandering maze of this sick mind... but l doubt it... because the bad-mouther's whole world is built on a foundation of lies. The truth is only seen as a crack in the foundation & must be patched up with whatever is available. Usually its the crap bucket of more lies that acts as mortar for the bad-mouther. lf the bad-mouther ever ever began to admit to his/her ways, it could very well lead to a complete nervous breakdown. You see, the entire psyche of the bad-mouther is built upon the rotten edifice of lies & delusions. An intricate web of self deceit & false images prop up the false sense of self-worth this type of person needs to confirm their pathetic existence. The bad-mouther will lose many hours of sleep obsessing on how to undermine others he is jealous of or covetous of. The bad-mouther perceives more talented people as a threat. He thinks of them as enemies unless he can use them to his/her benefit. He/she might think to themselves "how dare that asshole make that project. He thinks he's so smart, l'll show him!" The bad-mouther assumes that other people are playing the same game as he is. That's what justifies his actions, in short "I'll get him before he gets me!"

The bad-mouther has very low self esteem. Deep down behind walls of detours, the bad-mouther knows what he is. He/she sees the successes of others as a threat to their own personal self worth. You will notice the bad-mouther saying the most absurd things about others in the movement that have achieved more than they have. People in the movement have got to be happy when others succeed. lf you can't be happy at that, the movement doesn't need you around. lf you can't share the joys of someone else's growth then you should look at yourself in the mirror & not subject others to ridicule & scorn because you're a jealous little snot with a nose full of acne.

The bottom line: When you hear a person badmouthing others in the movement challenge his/her statements. The common things you'll hear are "He's a Jew". "He's a fed." "She's a commie." "He's a pervert." "He said this or she said that." "He hit on my girlfriend/wife." "She's a slut." ad. nauseum. The bad-mouther will usually tell you these things under the guise of strict confidence. The bad-mouther will usually tell someone else something about you under the same guise of confidence. Thus does the bad-mouther weave his diabolical web. Every one becomes suspicious. No one sits down and adds 2+2. But at the centre of it all the manipulating bad-mouther benefiting from the situation. He rules by misinformation & double talk. Subterfuge is his middle name. He/she is often very convincing but there are usually no facts backing up his statements except "trust me" when pushed for specifics, the bad-mouther becomes very angry. Try it.

bad-mouthers are sick pathological lying destroyers who out of jealousy & low self esteem will stop at nothing to preserve their self erected soap opera dung-house of delusions. They have no talent so they lash out at those who do. They are the most potentially damaging individuals lurking in the movement today. (Wolves in sheep's clothing) They are worse than the Jew because so many people believe the lies of the bad-mouther. There is no place now nor will there ever be for this type of disease wasted flesh. Stop them now or you could very well be the next victim of their vicious campaign of lies, Avoid them like the plague, The bad-mouther is the bastard son of the Jew. He/she is worse than ZOG, Losers will lose everything unless they keep their forked tongue disease infested rat traps shut!

The art of the Creator is creation. Creation is the spirit of art and of nature. We remain far from the fecundity of nature.

Most are preoccupied with bread and butter and other everyday needs, snatching what they can here and there. Who has a moment to contemplate creation?

How can a person who has never admired nature or meditated upon the beauty of creation ever hope to admire or understand the artist.

So in the same vein it is the Creator who remains unrecognized.

That the purpose of human life should be comprised by narcissistic ambition and toil in avaricious competition for material status, that the insanity of this brutal system and atmosphere of lies is ever increasing, and that we are forced to live amongst such an atmosphere, foments an absence of beauty. This is apparent enough. A lack of beauty, of creation, creates disease.

When the spirit is cut off from creation and from beauty, one will not seek it. He will not think to look for the beautiful, though it is always beside us...

The tendency to love and admire beauty is a divine inheritance. In all cases, periods of great art has been ethnocentric and unique. It always reveals a spirit of racial, religious and ethnic pride unless it is stripped of beauty and made ugly and aloof. At this point both life and art become empty.

Any sacred space stripped of its art and nature becomes little more than a factory farm, a zoo or any other venue of the vulgar, while a people stripped of their art become hermetically sealed off from the living presence of their nature and can only consume and await death. There is nothing left to uplift, awaken or pierce which is the purpose of art.

Somebody mentioned Shaun Walker. Walker beat up somebody in a bar. As far as I know other members of the NA were never dragged into the prosecution. There is no basis for turning Walker's case into an argument against organizing. It's an argument against getting into bar fights.

I think it can be argued that Bill White was largely the architect of his own misfortune as well. What's the point of publishing a juror's home address? Granted that it's perfectly legal, still there is no point except to be menacing. What's the point of making empty threats? It doesn't do any credit to the cause. But again, White's actions got only him into trouble. So what does it have to do with organizing? White went out of his way to be outrageous even when he wasn't in an organization.

I have some sympathy for Matt Hale. It's outrageous that a private, Jew-ridden organization is the gatekeeper for entry into the legal profession. Hale could have avoided that problem, not so much by avoiding organizations as by avoiding nationwide publicity so early in life. Regarding his incarceration, there is a lesson to be learned, which is, don't tolerate people advocating criminal activity within an ostensibly law-abiding organization.

Tom Metzger's opposition on principle to formal organizations makes sense for him, since he has been trying to encourage illegal activity. My understanding of Metzger's "leaderless resistance" is, Break the law but don't tell me. I doubt that this approach has had any significant success, because people left entirely to themselves tend to become self-indulgent. Wow! I met that Michael Burks character at a Council of Conservitive Citizens meeting in Louisville several years ago. A real dorky looking guy. He looked like a small gust of wind could blow him over. He kept talking to Tom Robb about not being able to find a girlfriend. He also used to post on stormfront under the name Kentucky Kludd and Michael Burks. Personally I took him for a loser with no friends who followed WN orginizations looking for acceptance. I also thought he was borderline insane and my gut feeling told me something just wasnt right about him. I never would of thought he was some kind of informer or agent! It makes me sick to think about it. I think I even gave him my phone number and address at the CCC meeting because we both live in the Louisville area. I guess the feds know all about me now LOL.

The lesson here is if someone doesnt seem quite right they probably arent.

Also, anyone in the Louisville area watch out for two skinheads named Josh Cowles and Matt Roberts. Two ex IKA members turned, or were the entire time, informants. Josh Cowles is a fat ugly fuck covered in tatoos. You cant miss him.

One.

Some time in the second half of the 1990s, a terminological change occurred in the racially conscious community.

Many who previously identified themselves as White Power advocates, segregationists, separatists, supremacists, survivalists, neo-Confederates, biological realists, etc. started calling themselves "white nationalists."

At the time (and I didn't know much about these things then), I thought this reflected a changing political consciousness.

For what began after 1945 as a "movement" to maintain the integrity of America's racial character and prevent alien races from intruding into its various "life worlds" had, by the 1990s, ceased to be a realistic project — 30 years of Third-World immigration, "civil rights" legislation, and various measures imposed by the federal government to subordinate white interests to those of nonwhites had irrevocably transformed the American people so that it was increasingly difficult to characterize them as even a majority-white population.

As a consequence, "white advocates" in the late 1990s started making traditional nationalist claims for secession and self-determination because the United States, in their eyes, had become a threat to their people.

Two.

This interpretation was not at all unreasonable. But, alas, it didn't quite accord with the facts.

I've since learned that those calling themselves "white nationalists" are not necessarily nationalists in the sense of wanting to secede from the United States in order to form an independent ethnostate. Most, I think it's fair to say, are racially conscious conservatives who want to work through the existing institutions to regain control of the country their ancestors made — in order, ultimately, to dismantle the present anti-white system of preferences and restore something of the white man's former hegemony.

By contrast, white nationalists in the strict sense (i.e., those favoring secession) have no interest in restoring the old ways, let alone regaining control of the central state, whose authority is already slipping and whose rule is increasingly dysfunctional. Indeed, the American state system, as its more astute supporters acknowledge, is now beyond reform.

Instead, white nationalists aspire to create a counter-elite to lead disaffected white youth in a movement to found a whites-only nation-state somewhere in North America, once the poorly managed enterprise known as the United States collapses in a centrifugal dispersion of its decaying and perverted powers.

Without an organizational presence in the real world and with a "public" largely of computer hobbyists, white nationalists at present have no hope of actually mobilizing the white populace in opposition to the existing anti-white regime. Rather, their immediate goal is to prepare the way for the development of a revolutionary nationalist vanguard to lead the struggle for white liberation, creating, in the process, a counter-elite capable of founding a White Republic. They aspire thus not to recapture the rotting corpse of the US government, but to free themselves from it — in order to be themselves, in their own land, in their own way.

White nationalists, as such, politically define themselves in wanting to create a sovereign state in North America. They endeavor, therefore, not to "put things back the way they were," as conservatives wish, but to rid themselves of them completely. A National Revolution, they hold, will alone restore "the white man to his rightful place in the world."

Inspired by the birthright handed down by the blood and sacrifice of ancestors, their project, relatedly, is not about restoring the Third Reich, the Confederacy, or Jim Crow, as leftists imagine, but about creating a future white homeland in which their kind will be able "to pursue their destiny without interference from other races."

Three.

White nationalism is a variant of historic ethnonationalism, what Walker Connor calls nationalism "in its pristine sense."

All three — racial, ethno, and pristine nationalism — define the nation in terms of blood.

The creedal or civic nationalism of the present regime, which makes loyalty to the state, not the nation, primary, is "nationalist" only in a narrow ideological sense, confusing as it does patriotism (loyalty to the state or affection for the land) with loyalty to the people (nationalism). It thus defines the nation in terms of certain abstract democratic principles, seeing it as a collection of individuals, each more important than the whole.

Though ethnonationalists privilege the nation's spirit above all else, they define it organically, in terms of blood, as an extended family, an endogamous kin group, or a genetic commonwealth.

Unlike European nations, formed around long-established ethnic cores (which had developed in the Middle Ages, as Germanic and other tribal confederations evolved into larger political, regional, and cultural identities), American national identity was, historically, defined in explicitly racial terms.

As Sir Arthur Keith characterized it: "In Europe the stock has been broken up into local national breeds; in America the local breeds have been reunited."

In both cases, a national identity grew out of a real or imagined blood relationship linking the nation's members to inherited customs and institutions.

Because the American form of racial nationhood lacks the ethnic dimension distinct to European nationalism, it is a source of some misunderstanding, especially in its purely negative expression as anti-Semitism or Negrophobia.

For example, even Euronationalists who struggle for a continental nation-state tend to reject white nationalism — because it seems to imply the typical American leveling of cultural and other identities by subsuming them under a homogenizing biological concept that negates the particularisms of European nationhood.

In this, however, our European cousins misunderstand the aim of white nationalism, though some white nationalists in their one-sided reaction to nonwhites may, admittedly, have given cause to their misunderstanding.

White nationalism is a distinctly American (or, better said, New World) nationalism, not a European one, and the two are analogous only at the highest level, where the national community, defined ethnically or racially, affirms it right to control its own destiny.

This is not to say that American racial nationalism — which makes white European racial ascriptions the basis of American identity — has no ethnic or historic component.

The country's original settlers were largely of Anglo-Protestant descent and this had a formative effect on American institutions and folkways.

The organic basis of the American nation, however, was less English ethnicity than "whiteness."

Even before the War of Independence, more than a quarter of the population was of non-English, mainly North European stock: Scots-Irish, German, Dutch, French Huguenots, etc. By about the mid-18th century, the "American English" were increasingly referred to as "Americans," a people "selected by a whole series of ordeals which [had] killed off the weak and worthless" and conferred a distinct vitality on their laws, attitudes, and local institutions.

The bitterness of the War of Independence (the first American war of secession) and the War of 1812, US-British acrimony and rivalry, which lasted late into the 19th century, in addition to the nationalist compulsion to celebrate an American identity independent of the English — all tended to minimize the significance of the colonists' original national origins, as they were reborn as pure Americans. In fact, American nationalism arose on the basis of a certain popular revulsion against the English. Nevertheless, English-Americans were the original native Americans and all the rest of us have since become American by assimilating something of their ethos.

Though Anglo-Protestant ethnicity continues to animate the inner reaches of American culture, it wasn't, however, the genotypical basis of American identity. Rather, it was the racial experience of transplanted Englishmen in 17th-century Virginia, then the "exotic far western periphery . . . of the metropolitan European cultural system."

In the New World part of this system, the ever-looming presence of African slaves, considered "by nature vicious and morally inferior," and "savage" red Indians, who posed an ongoing threat, could not but foster an acute racial consciousness.
Given that economic opportunities, vast expanses of virgin land, and new fortunes prevented the old European social hierarchies from forming, these racial bearings acted as the one fixed hierarchy ordering colonial life.

Forged, thus, in conflict with nonwhites, the colonists' early racial consciousness served to mark the boundaries of the emerging American identity. The historian Winthrop Jordan claims that "Anglo-Americans" were already identifying themselves as "whites" rather than "Englishmen" as early as 1680.

National or ethnic differences in this racially mixed environment were simply less meaningful than differences between Europeans and non-Europeans.

When the American colonists at last declared their independence, they declared in effect their intent to become a self-determined people in the evolutionary sense, by becoming a nation, an organic body with its own sovereign state and its own laws of growth.

Then, following the revolution, as republican principles were gradually extended to all white males, the country's Herrenvolk democracy posed an insurmountable obstacle to the extension of these principles to nonwhites — for the new, explicitly white nation was based not on the liberal fiction of "humanity," but on the assumption that human nature is a product of blood and race.

Indeed, the white egalitarianism of the early republic, shaped largely in opposition to the Toryism of anglophile Federalists (who represented the bourgeois interests of liberal market society and its connection to British commerce) was premised on the Negro's otherness and the primacy of white racial ascriptions, all of which contributed to the nation's self-consciousness, coherence, and communality, as British and European Americans, largely under the leadership of Indian-fighting, pro-slavery, and expansionist Southerners, came to share not just the same horizontal sense of right and identity, but the same vertical qualities and dignities of their stock.

Different in ways from ethnicity, race forged the psychological bonds that joined American whites and differentiated them from nonwhites, just as the language, customs, and early institutions of the original Anglo-Protestant settlers established the cultural-linguistic framework in which white Americans became a self-conscious nation.

God Bless Ted Turner
The mogul among the "losers."

There are few people in American public life as openly hostile to Christianity as media mogul Ted Turner.

"Christianity is a religion for losers," he once said. On another occasion, Turner joked that the pope should step on a landmine. Seeing CNN employees wearing ashes on their forehead on Ash Wednesday, he remarked, "What are you, a bunch of Jesus freaks? You ought to be working for Fox." He is so viscerally uncomfortable with the Christian faith that he blamed his divorce from his third wife, Jane Fonda, partly on her decision to become a practicing Christian.

You might say it was brave of Turner, then, to sit down this past weekend in Washington at a table filled with Christian journalists. He was there to discuss Gods & Generals, the epic Civil War film opening February 21. The movie, which was bankrolled by Turner (who makes a cameo appearance), is startling in its recognition of the central role personal faith played in the lives and decisions of Gen. Robert E. Lee, Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, and other important military figures of that war.

As director Ron Maxwell explains, this has nothing to do with proselytizing; it's simply a matter of the film being faithful to the historical record. Still, it may raise some eyebrows that such a robustly impious man as Ted Turner is paying for a movie so overtly Christian in its content. When asked, Turner rejected the notion that there is anything odd about it.

"That's the rap on me, that I'm impious," Turner said. He denied it, saying that he's read the Bible from cover to cover more than once, and that he "was born again seven times, so one of them is bound to take."

Turner really was a deeply religious boy, despite his father's emotional abuse. He intended at one point to become a missionary. Then, when he was a teenager, his younger sister Mary Jane contracted a form of lupus, and suffered terribly before dying a relatively short while later. All his prayers for her recovery — an hour a day, he said — were for naught.

"She used to run around in pain, begging God to let her die," he recalled. "My family broke apart. I thought, 'How could God let my sister suffer so much?'"

These events happened nearly half a century ago, but he speaks of them as if they had occurred last week. Though none of the journalists pressed him on the point, Turner, who has described himself publicly at times as either an atheist or an agnostic, began talking as if he were justifying himself at a tribunal.

"Look at my philanthropy!" he said. "The Bible says it's better to give than receive. I sponsored that religious conference at the United Nations. It cost me $600,000."

Well, yes, he did sponsor a world religion conference in 2000, but that's not likely to win him plaudits among the Christian faithful. Addressing the ecumenical gatherees, Turner denounced the Christian faith of his childhood as false and intolerant. One conservative Christian observer described the speech as "the most blasphemous thing I have ever heard in my life."

Turner may have turned his back on his faith, but he still has a missionary's zeal to change the world. In addition to his pledge to give a billion dollars to the U.N. (a pledge he's had to revise given the dramatic stock-market reversals he's undergone), Turner donates lavishly to causes that promote his globalist and environmentalist views. He is currently finishing production work on an eight-hour documentary about weapons of mass destruction. For Turner, the world still needs saving as much as it did when he was a would-be missionary; it's just that the gospel he preaches is a militantly secular one.

He counts Gods & Generals to his moral credit, in part because it is not a trashy film. He walked into the room at the junket and said, "Wasn't that a great movie? There's no 'motherf***er this' and 'motherf***ker that.' I get so sick of that." It took some nerve to talk like that to a roomful of Christians on a Sunday morning, and it was patronizing to think this crowd would call the movie "great" because there was no cussin' in it. Still, there was something almost touching about his eagerness to please, and to be approved of by his audience.

"So I'm living like a Christian," he said later, after recounting highlights of his charitable giving. "I guarantee you I'll see you [in Heaven]. I'll be like the guy who has the last two tickets in the stadium. I've lived a really good life. I'm going to say, 'Hey, St. Peter, remember Gods & Generals? This movie is a final bit of insurance that I get in."

Leave aside the basic misunderstanding Turner has about what Christianity teaches about salvation. What's interesting is that a man like Turner is clearly haunted by the idea that Heaven exists, and he might not make it there.

"For some reason, he has a guilty conscience," Jane Fonda told writer Ken Auletta for a lengthy profile a couple of years ago. "He went much further than his father thought he would. So what's left? To be a good guy. He knows he will go down in history. He won't go down as a greedy corporate mogul. Although he claims to be an atheist, at the end of every speech he says, 'God bless you.' He wants to get into heaven."

I found that quote after returning from the junket in Washington. Turner had indeed left the interview saying, "God bless you," which I'd taken to be a smirky remark. Perhaps not. Perhaps he meant it.

I'd thought about Turner on the train ride back to New York. Why does God permit evil, including allowing the innocent to suffer? This is the hardest question for theists to answer, and an entire branch of theology, called theodicy, is given over to its study. Turner had seen his beloved sister linger in extreme pain before she died young, his prayers for her unavailing. I got the impression from being around him this weekend that it's not so much that Turner doesn't believe in God as he doesn't want to give God, who allowed his sister to be crushed by disease, the satisfaction of recognition.

How do any religious believers who have never been tested as severely know that we would fare any better than Ted Turner has? The actor Stephen Lang, who plays Stonewall Jackson in Gods & Generals, said that Jackson would greet any news from the battlefield with a terse "very good," because to a man of Jackson's deep Calvinist piety, even bad news was evidence that God's divine plan was being worked out. Young Ted Turner didn't have that kind of faith. How many of us do? This is why Christians, in their most well-known prayer, petition God not to put them to the test.

Ted Turner will no doubt say something gratuitously obnoxious about Christianity again. And he'll apologize again. Then he'll do it yet again. And yet, after this weekend, it won't bother me like it used to. Regarding this tortured man, I am reminded of a saying attributed to the Jewish philosopher Philo of Alexandria: "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle."

The outspoken Ted Turner, for all his faults, is an interesting personality for Creators to study. He's had a few things to say about the Jew whenever his tongue was sufficiently lubricated with bottled courage. He tried to outJew the Jew and lost when he sold CNN to Time-Warner.

Hal Turner: FBI informant

CHICAGO (AP) — The lawyer for a blogger accused of threatening to kill three Chicago-based federal judges says his client has been an FBI informant.

Attorney Michael Orozco also says his client gave authorities information about a plot to assassinate President Barack Obama.

Orozco made the statement during a bond hearing Tuesday after his client, extremist blogger Hal Turner, pleaded not guilty. Turner is accused of telling visitors to his Web site that the three judges "deserve to be killed" for upholding Chicago's ban on handguns.

But federal prosecutor William Hogan told the judge that he'd "never heard anything about that" and that Turner's contacts with the FBI ended "some time ago."

White's life on fringe puts him at center of storm
The Roanoke neo-Nazi's ideological leanings were foreshadowed by his early feelings of "innate superiority."

At a time when the power of the Internet was untested, one of the first people to see its dark potential was an 18-year-old college student named William A. White.

In 1996, when White was a sophomore at the University of Maryland, he became convinced, based on hearsay alone, that a teenage girl he'd never met was being abused by her mother.

White aired the allegations online, along with the mother's name and telephone number. He urged readers to call her at home and berate her. About a half-dozen did.

Emboldened by the controversy he created, and thrilled by the national media attention he received, White continued to pick fights from behind his computer screen over the years, even as his personal beliefs swung wildly from far-left anarchist to far-right white supremacist.

After moving to Roanoke in 2004, White formed a neo-Nazi organization and began to rail against his so-called enemies of the white race: the "Negro beasts" and the "Jewish disease."

Now, White is in the midst of a free-speech battle with the federal government.

A U.S. District Court judge in Chicago last week dismissed a charge that White used his Web site to encourage violence against a juror who voted to convict a fellow white supremacist. The judge ruled that White's actions were constitutionally protected.

Prosecutors are considering an appeal, and White faces additional charges in Roanoke of making threats by e-mail and on his now-defunct Web site, overthrow.com.

So it may be too soon to say for sure that the First Amendment -- the traditional sanctuary for those who employ printing presses and microphones -- also protects a hatemonger who uses the Internet to blur the boundary between free speech and illegal threats.

Equally uncertain is whether White will drop out of public view as a neo-Nazi leader once the criminal proceedings are behind him, as he recently suggested he might.

But this much about White seems clear: Diagnosed as a narcissist prone to histrionic behavior, the 32-year-old is driven by an insatiable desire for attention.

"Anything people say or write about me, whether good or bad, is ultimately good for me and my cause," White told The Washington Post in 1996, after his first Internet caper thrust him into a media spotlight.

"Actually it would be better if the media trashed me and made me look like evil incarnate," he said, "because if they said, 'Bill White is a good guy,' everyone would shrug their shoulders and forget about me the next day."

By 2008, White had become "possibly the loudest and most obnoxious neo-Nazi leader in America," according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups. Overthrow.com was his megaphone, and White boasted that the Web site attracted nearly 3 million visitors a year.

Applying the skills he honed as a college student, White lashed out at whoever offended his bigotry.

When thousands marched in Jena, La., to support six black teenagers charged with assault, White issued a call to "Lynch the Jena 6." When Barack Obama ran for president, he published an image of the candidate in the sights of an assassin's rifle, the cross hairs extended to form a swastika.

Even something as innocuous as soul music playing at Starbucks could inspire another rant from a man who loves to hate.

"Whatever gave these animals the idea that they had souls?" White wrote on overthrow.com in 2007, after a visit to the coffee shop. "If we piled them up in camps and set them on fire until the black smoke from their black skins blackened the skies, we would be doing the world no wrong."

Defiance came early

William Alexander White grew up in a suburban neighborhood of Montgomery County, Md. The oldest of three boys, he was a remarkably intelligent child who began to show his defiant streak at an early age.

White's IQ was twice measured at above 150, according to a school psychological report, and at the age of 8 he was placed in programs for talented and gifted students.

"I cannot say I did well with other 'gifted' students," White wrote earlier this year in a letter from his jail cell to The Roanoke Times, one of several in which he described his upbringing and political views in scrawling longhand that filled more than 25 pages.

"In retrospect, I would say that my problem was the overwhelming Jewish population of my elementary schools and the overwhelming black population of the Magnet schools (which were used to integrate black neighborhoods)."

Starting in the ninth grade, White became rebellious and verbally abusive to his teachers and was charged as a juvenile with threatening a principal, according to the psychological report, which White posted online years ago. He also began to develop his outlaw computer skills, hacking into the school computer system.

Manfred Smith, White's eighth-grade social studies teacher, recalled White as an avid reader who loved a debate -- to a fault. "He was argumentative, insulting to students, and wanted to dominate any discussion," Smith said.

Suspended repeatedly, White bounced from school to school, attending three high schools by the time he graduated from Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda in 1995.

White's family declined to be interviewed for this story. His father, a former research associate who specialized in defense policy for The Brookings Institution, mentioned in a letter "the anguish we are experiencing over Bill's childishly impulsive political posturing."

"I love my family very much, and the feeling is mutual," his son wrote. "But they strongly object to my political views."

The 'nihilistic adolescent'

While his juvenile behavior deteriorated, White's intellect grew.

At a time when most of his peers were reading action or romance novels, White was devouring the works of Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx and Roman philosopher Marcus Aurelius. A budding anarchist in high school, White started a student newspaper that advocated a "leftist utopian anarchy."

"In a sense, one gets the feeling that William could easily be Dostoevski's prototype of the nihilist adolescent," school psychologist Robert Mulcahy wrote in his 1994 evaluation of White.

"As he lounges there listening with his long legs propped up on a nearby desk, stroking his sparse goatee, there is a tired, whimsical, sarcastic grin on his face, an adult-like manner in the way he attends, a piercing brilliance in his eyes, and a feeling that his brain is taking in and dissecting the semantic, social and political significance of each and every word and phrase he hears."

The way Mulcahy saw it, White faced a dilemma at 16: He desperately wanted the attention and approval of his peers, but his feelings of "innate superiority" prevented him from emulating their teenage antics in order to gain acceptance.

"So, the only option left to him is to adopt the role of the rebellious renegade, the outlaw, the loner, the one who goes his own path," Mulcahy wrote.

Even today, White insists that he fit in by acting out.

"I was quite popular in high school," he wrote in one of his letters. According to White, he was elected president of the student government association at Walt Whitman, only to have the results thrown out by the administration.

"School administrators viewed me then much as the federal government views me now," he wrote, "as a pain in the ass that must be silenced, laws and the rest be damned."

White did run for association president as an independent, according to Louise Reynolds, a journalism teacher at the school. Given his reputation and penchant for profanity, administrators were concerned about what he might say in his campaign speech. But they allowed him to run. He lost.

Testing the limits of free speech

White headed off to the University of Maryland in 1995. He majored in psychology, dabbled in anarchy, and continued in his role as campus agitator.

Other members of the Utopian Anarchist Party said he showed no signs at the time of the racism and anti-Semitism he would later preach so fervently.

"Bill White is considered a traitor by myself and others in the anarchist movement," said Luke Kuhn, a member of the anti-authority group. "I don't know if he ever honestly supported left-wing causes. I know he used to claim to. But he sure as hell is a Nazi now."

In 1996, the group held a lecture on how to find police officers at home and harm them, using explosives, arson or guns.

White -- who had been convicted of resisting arrest earlier that year -- said at the time he wasn't advocating anything, just explaining what had been done in the past.

"Obviously, it didn't go over well in the law enforcement community," said Paul Dillon, who was a sergeant in the university police department at the time. "But it is a free country, and he had a First Amendment right to do what he did."

At the age of 18, White had become adept at pushing his free speech rights to the very edge of the law. And when he waged his online attack on the woman he suspected of child abuse, it marked a new test of the limits of cyberspace.

White was not the first Internet mudslinger. But his case was one of the first known episodes in which someone published a home telephone number of their target with the intent of inviting abuse, The Washington Post reported at the time.

Following the stir White created, authorities investigated both the substance of his allegations and the way he aired them. No charges were ever filed against him or the woman.

The next year, White dropped out of college, figuring he could make lots of money in computers. He was soon earning $80,000 a year for an Internet marketing firm in Maryland, he said, and later started his own consulting business.

Unable to shake politics, White ran twice for a seat on the Montgomery County, Md., school board, and then for the state legislature. He stuck to his anarchist platform, with slogans such as "Vote for me because you hate them."

He lost every time. "My sense was he was doing it just as a lark, to get his name out there," said Steve Abrams, who won the school board seat White sought. "He's always been on the fringe, and he's never had any followers at all."

White later worked for a correspondent for the newspaper Pravda, he claimed, rubbing elbows with prominent journalists at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. But he eventually grew restless and began to dream of starting a real estate company somewhere in the mountains.

With his savings from work and $100,000 from the sale of his home as capital, White considered doing business in Wheeling, W.Va., and the Ohio River Valley. He wound up coming to Roanoke.

White Homes and Land LLC

In 2004, White began buying houses in the West End, an impoverished inner-city neighborhood with a high concentration of blacks. He fixed the houses up for rent, refinanced them and put the funds toward buying more houses, paying between $50,000 and $70,000 for most. Before long, about 20 homes in a three-block area were under the control of a new company, White Homes and Land LLC.

White married a real estate agent (his wife, Meghan White, declined to comment for this story), had a daughter and appeared to be settling down. The polar opposite of an absentee landlord, he was in the West End almost every day, repairing his properties and dealing with tenants.

But it soon became clear that Bill White the landlord was also Bill White the Internet racist.

"N------ are plotting against my shrubs," he wrote on overthrow.com, explaining how vandalism to his new landscaping had reinforced his view that blacks "cannot be trusted to conduct honest business."

That post and others -- including one in which White referred to his "Ghetto Beautification Project" -- led some people to believe he was evicting blacks without cause in an effort to create an all-white living space. The Roanoke NAACP filed a fair housing complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which investigated but took no action.

As he became more outspoken about his racial views, White found few friends in Roanoke, even among like-minded bigots. When he protested a fair housing symposium, White stood alone outside a Roanoke hotel, wearing a swastika armband and holding a sign.

Although White said in his jailhouse letters that he has friends in town, the only ones he named to be interviewed for this story were people with whom he had casual encounters: employees at Lowe's, for example, or a clerk at the post office.

"It's not like I've spent my life in Roanoke living in a cave," he wrote.

White's former tenants described a landlord who was businesslike and courteous at first, only to turn hostile. Angie Laymen said it was because she had biracial children. Scott Rayfield said it was because he dated a black woman. For Tammy Goad, it was because she had black friends over to visit.

"He was real snobbish toward them and turned his nose up at them," Goad said.

Known as the white supremacist in a black neighborhood, White took to arming himself. Goad recalls seeing him making the rounds wearing a bulletproof vest, a handgun strapped to his hip, holding his infant daughter in a baby carrier.

White was making a reputation for himself, one that would soon extend far beyond the West End.

Alienating his own

An angry mob ran through the streets of a Toledo, Ohio, neighborhood. Rioters threw bricks, bottles and rocks at police officers. A bar was set afire. More than 100 people were arrested.

And Bill White was in the middle of it all.

It was a Saturday afternoon in October 2005, and White had driven nine hours from Roanoke to serve as the spokesman for a march held by the National Socialist Movement, a neo-Nazi group.

Considering that the purpose of the march was to protest black crime, and considering that most of the rioters were black, the event was deemed a huge success by its organizers. The riot drew national attention, elevating White's status in the white supremacy movement.

"I think he was a very powerful influence," said Justin Boyer, a former member of the National Socialist Movement who now denounces White. "Because when Bill White spoke, you could just feel the energy. It reminded you of Adolf Hitler when he spoke. It was powerful and kind of mesmerizing."

Not long after the riot, White had a falling out with the NSM over a controversy he called "Satangate." He and others accused some NSM members of being part of a group that engaged in sexual discussions with juveniles on a "Teens for Satan" e-mail group.

White formed his own group in Roanoke, the American National Socialist Workers Party, which purported to fight for the white working class.

Asked to explain how he got involved in national socialism, White went on for pages. He cited the works of obscure philosophers -- his strongest influence was Julius Evola, a Sicilian author and political activist whose views have been described as "ultrafascist" -- and his own views in defense of Hitler. But he recounted few real-life experiences or observations.

"The superiority of the white race, on the whole, for me, is such a trivial given that I no more need to impose it on the world than I need to impose the color of green on grass, or fruit on an apple tree," he wrote.

If such views drew other neo-Nazis to White, his self-absorption quickly drove them away, according to Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has followed White closely over the years.

Following White's arrest in October, participants in white supremacy message groups expressed little surprise or dismay. One poster said White brought his legal trouble on himself with his "stupid, theatrical, self-aggrandizing ways." Another wrote last week after the charges were dismissed: "Bill White skates, but is still shunned."

White has declined to say how many members the American National Socialist Workers Party has. By Potok's estimate, the self-proclaimed "commander" of the national group has no more than 200 followers.

"The guy is clearly an egomaniac," Potok said. "Bill White's chief concern has always been Bill White, and that has hurt him in terms of being any kind of a leader."

'Truth' is in the telling

After flirting with the law for years, White was arrested in October for posting the name, address and telephone number of the foreman of a Chicago jury that convicted Matthew Hale in 2004.

A white supremacist, Hale was sentenced to 40 years in prison for soliciting the murder of federal Judge Joan Lefkow.

Although a judge dismissed White's charge last week, he remains in jail, facing additional federal charges in Roanoke. He is accused of using the Internet and the telephone to threaten people including a newspaper columnist and a human rights lawyer.

Three different courts have declined to release him on bond. Federal prosecutors point to writings on overthrow.com that they say show White is a danger to the community.

Last May, White wrote of waking up every morning with the urge to "kill, kill, kill."

In another post, he said he had developed a "very intricate plot for the murder of about a score of Roanoke city's Negro nuisances and their annoying counterparts at The Roanoke Times."

At a bond hearing last year, White testified that his writings were not meant to be believed. "I write essentially tabloid news, half truth, half sensationalism and exaggeration," he said.

In one of his letters from jail, written before the Chicago charge was dismissed last week, White was as confident as ever, vowing to beat the charges.

"There are many people, including those in power, who believe any dissent should be crushed with the destruction of the dissenter," he wrote. "Further, there are many people who have devoted their lives to destroying me only to find, to their frustration, I am beyond their ability to destroy."

White also wrote that, upon his release, he plans to withdraw from the white supremacy movement and abandon his Web site, which the FBI shut down at the time of his arrest.

"My intent, when I am finally acquitted of all this nonsense, and such acquittal is inevitable, is to close my publishing business and withdraw from public activity," he wrote.

"I do not intend to recant my views, even if I will quiet them."

But as White himself once admitted from the witness stand, while sworn to tell the truth, not everything he writes should be believed.

A tiny Mississippi delta town has elected its first black mayor after the white incumbent, unopposed for 30 years, faced a young challenger inspired by President Barack Obama's feat in winning the White House.

In a shock result in Alligator (population 220), Tommie "Tomaso" Brown, 38, defeated Robert Fava, the mayor since 1979, owner of the general store and once his opponent's boss, by 37 votes to 27.

Mr Brown's surprise victory was a milestone for Alligator, which is named after the curving lake nearby rather than the alligators that once occupied it. Although the only three businesses in the shrinking, tumble-down town are run by whites, three-quarters of the population is now black.

"They wanted a black mayor," said a philosophical Mr Fava, 71. "Another Obama - I think that's what brought it on. I ran on '30 years of dedicated service' and he ran on 'Change'. He promised a swimming pool and a recreation centre, which he can't do.

"He beat me by 10 votes because he had enough family folks to put him in. But we get along good. He used to work here at the store and there ain't no problems between us. They were ready for a change and I was too - it's a weight off my mind."

Alligator, some 90 miles south of Memphis, was once a thriving town whose population swelled to more than 1,000. Its economic backbone was provided by European immigrants, especially Italians, who came to work on the plantations in the Deep South's fertile Mississippi delta at the start of the 20th Century.

In the 1920s, the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley railroad ran eight trains a day that stopped at Alligator, dropping off and picking up salesmen who would gamble all day in the town's Gibson Hotel, built in 1897.

Other visitors would arrive on boats that plied the Mississippi river from Memphis to New Orleans, transporting timber and grain as well as people. Blacks would play the blues along the town's Front Street and labour in the fields but everything was run by the whites.

A yellowing newspaper cutting in Mr Fava's store tells how Alligator once boasted "two schools, two churches, 16 brick store buildings, two blacksmith shops, two lumber yards, two doctors' offices...and three modernly-equipped gins."

The trains stopped in the 1950s and the hotel closed down around the same time and was demolished. Trailer homes now occupy the space where it once stood, one of them lived in by Mr Brown, who works as a cashier at the Fitzgeralds Casino in nearby Robinsonville.

Most of the old store fronts are boarded up and grass grows on the pavements. Vacant buildings have been broken into and vandalised. The alligators in the lake have also gone, chased out by beavers whose dams now have to be blown up by farmers because they cause fields to flood.

All that remains of the town's once teeming commercial activity is Mr Fava's Mary Ann's Country Store, named after his wife; Gator's grocery and diner owned by his younger brother Ronnie; and Bruno's liquor and convenience store owned by his cousin Vito Sbravati.

Though some work in the casinos and on the Mississippi boats, most Alligator residents are farm workers, producing corn, beans, cotton and rice that is shipped the 350 miles down the river to New Orleans, from where it is exported.

Mr Brown was the first black man ever to stand for Mayor of Alligator and it took Mr Obama's election to galvanise him into action. "Obama was a major influence on everybody," he said, almost drowned out by the chirping of crickets in the sweltering afternoon heat. "He inspired me. I'm not going to take that from him.

"After 30 years, I didn't think an African-American would be able to be mayor. I didn't think the position was open to me. When he won, I decided that I knew the changes that needed to be made here and I thought that I could make those changes.

"If we don't look after our youth, what do we have? The population is dying out and I want more people here. I want better living conditions.

I just want the people to be comfortable. Small towns like this depend on government funding and that's what we're seeking.

"I mingle with a lot of the young kids here in the community because if you deal with the people and their problems you understand more what's going on if you're out with them."

The town's facilities were substandard, he said, gesturing towards the humble town hall, where a "No Loitering" sign is nailed next to the door. "There isn't even a phone or a fax machine in there. How can we communicate with the outside world and ask for things?" There was jubilation among the town's blacks after Mr Brown's victory.

""Everybody out here was whooping and hollering and running and trying to flip," said Patrina Brown, 25, the new mayor's niece and newly elected as one of Alligator's five aldermen.

Some youngsters ran into Mr Fava's store to taunt him. "They was pulling down their pants, shouting, 'Kiss my black ass, because we got a black mayor', swinging their things around and throwing stuff," said Jennifer Green, 31, a black mother of 10.

Miss Green is dubious about whether Mr Brown, whose duties will include organising contract labour, overseeing the water and sewer systems and distributing any grant monies, can deliver. "He says there's going to be lots of changes and everything with all these kids running around here.

"But he do the same thing they do, drinking beer and stuff. You've got to stay at home and study the town. Alligator is the kind of place where if you leave your door open, when you come back there ain't nothing in your house.

"There's guns. Kids knock on your door asking for a beer at three and four in the morning. I get 14-year-olds asking me if I want weed or whatever. They should have just left Mr Robert in there.

"Tomaso won't do anything about any of it. He's going to put his hand in the cookie jar just at the wrong time and get caught."

Her boyfriend J. R. Cook, who is white, disagreed. "It was about time for Robert to get out. He was tired. And there ain't no saints around here. They may be Christian people but when they get out of church it makes no difference."

Mr Fava said that relations between blacks and white had been generally good, though crime had increased. "Alligator is a quiet town, except when we get that Voodoo and Rap music.

"There's only been one murder in all the time I've been here. About five years ago, there was a white lady coming in with a black guy and they got into it and he shot her and tried to burn the body up. They got him and he's doing time in the penitentiary."

Mr Brown said: "Robert's coming around and accepting the reality now. I used to work for him and his brother and mow his lawn and stuff. It was a shocker for him after 30 years."

Up at Bruno's, at the entrance to Alligator beside Route 61, known as the Blues Highway, dozens of the town's blacks were spending their Saturday evening outside the store drinking beer and whisky and dancing to music blasting from a boom box. The scent of marijuana hung in the warm air.

Inside the store, Vito Sbravati, 69, and his wife Christine, 65, were doing a very brisk trade. Next to the door was a photograph of President George W. Bush and his wife Laura thanking the couple for their campaign contributions.

The town had changed beyond all recognition, they reflected, since Mr Sbravati's grandfather had arrived at New York's Ellis Island in 1905 before making the journey by sea to New Orleans and then up the Mississippi to Rosedale, 30 miles from Alligator.

Mr Sbravati shrugged that his cousin Robert had not been able to get his vote out but said he thought Mr Brown's election would not make much difference. "I call him Tomaso Obama."

The couple will be retiring in two weeks. "It's not about colour," said Mrs Sbravati, also a third generation Italian-American in Alligator whose mother, an Allegrezza, married Mr Fava's Uncle Bruno.

"I don't care if someone's orange, as long as they're honest. I don't go by black and white. I go by right and wrong."

The Tel Aviv police fraud squad arrested on Sunday nine Israelis on suspicion of netting millions of dollars from U.S. pensioners in a so-called Nigerian scam.

Police raided an office in the city, which is suspected to have been the nerve center of the dodgy enterprise. The defendants, all in their 20s and 30s, allegedly phoned American pensioners, told them they had won the lottery and asked them for a fee of several thousand dollars for the transfer of the prize money, which in fact never existed.

The investigation has been conducted in conjunction with U.S. law enforcement agencies.

Last week, it was reported that the American agencies had urged Israel Police to step up the extradition procedure of another ten Israelis who were suspected of scamming $2 million in similar means.

Most of the ten defendants in the advance-fee scam, which was unveiled by police last September, are in their early twenties, without a criminal record.

The first hearing in their extradition plea took place last week, after a New York law enforcement official said many of the victims are old and frail, and urged the Israeli police to bring the alleged offenders to imminent justice.

The MSM has been questioning whether or not the recent Tax Protests all around the Kwa were bottom-up, grassroots movements as opposed to being top-down, controlled, big-money organized events. The MSM is concerned about this distinction because they, being the major propagandizers, are acutely aware that PERCEPTION IS EVERYTHING. If it can be shown that these tax protests were/are groundswell, grassroots movements as opposed to what they call "astroturf" (fake grassroots), then the MSM and the kikenmedia has a problem. Good News: SPLC loses $50 Million. Bad news: $PLC can afford it

Those of us who know and love the Southern Poverty Law Center [SPLC, or more appropriately, in VDARE.com's considered opinion, the $PLC] have been naturally intrigued to see if this wealthy operation would be a victim of Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme.

After all, so many other Jewish-linked charities were: for example, the Robert I. Lappin Foundation, The Chais Foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union—not to mention poor Elie Wiesel's foundation. The Madoff massacre was remarkably sweeping.

Immigration patriots are particularly interested in the $PLC because of its recent obsessive smearing of essentially every immigration reform group in sight. This includes naming as a "hate group" not merely VDARE.COM (which has responded by naming the $PLC a "Treason Group") but also the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) which the $PLC has absurdly claimed is "at the nexus of the American nativist movement" along with FAIR's equally harmless fellow Beltway herbivores, NumbersUSA and the Center For Immigration Studies.

This new $PLC obsession is obviously odd because the huge post-1965 influx of unskilled legal and illegal immigrants, whatever else can be said about it, has been an unmitigated disaster for low income blacks—allegedly the $PLC's historic concern. Labor leader Cesar Chavez (ironically an $PLC hero) saw this dynamic clearly in the case of his farm workers, at that time largely native-born Hispanics. It's why the Howard Industries blacks cheered last year's ICE raid on their employer.

Complaints, even from the Left, about the $PLC's lack of interest in black and "Civil Rights" issues, and its extreme interest in money, date back at least to Ken Silverstein's classic The Church of Morris Dees (Harper's Magazine, November 2000) and JoAnn Wypijewski's ferocious defense of her criticism of the $PLC for ignoring local Black causes in her Nation magazine article Back to the back of the Bus (December 2000).

The standard critical assessment of the $PLC's chosen activities is that it is dominated by the extreme personal greed of its founder, Morris Seligman Dees. There are several stories about this in the (now quite extensive) $PLC literature. On this theory, Dees realized some years ago that his most generous supporters were simply more interested in savaging conservative and other politically incorrect groups than they were in the uplifting of blacks, and he responded accordingly.

The $PLC's Form 990 (PDF), which tax-exempt charities must file the IRS, and its Audited Financial Statements  (PDF) are now available for the fiscal year ending October 2008. And the answer to the Madoff matter—no such luck. Our friends apparently escaped unscathed.

But how did the $PLC manage to resist the allure of the so-called "Jewish T-Bill"—an operation which claimed to produce relatively moderate but extremely consistent returns over many years? Would that not be attractive to the $PLC as a prudent 501(c)(3) Charity—as it was tragically to so many others, and to so many Jewish retirees as well?

Answer: absolutely not. The reason the $PLC dodged Madoff was simply that its financial resources are managed astonishingly aggressively. The clear overriding objective: making money. Safe, slightly above-par returns just did not fit the bill.

Of course, this investment objective did cause the $PLC to sustain $51.2 million in "Investment" losses in the Fiscal year closing 10-31-08. But this left the $PLC with some $167.8 million in total portfolio assets at the end of the year.

And the implied approximately 30.5% FY 2008 loss is actually not exceptional. The S&P 500 lost 37.5% over the same period. (Of course, this makes the questionable assumption that it was prudent for the $PLC to be so exposed to stocks, rather than less volatile financial instruments like bonds or money market instruments).

Essentially, the $PLC balance sheet looks similar to what one would imagine for a retired Goldman Sachs partner: property and working capital, plus a huge sophisticated investment portfolio.

As of 10-31-08, the $PLC showed $35.6 Million (18.5% of its assets) in a kind of current account, called the "operating fund", which contains, curiously, all the physical assets including $16.9 million in depreciated real estate (to be fair— apparently no yacht!) This "operating fund" includes an investment pool of $11.6 million, on which losses of $1.2 million were sustained in FY '08. Presumably this is the management's dabbling/fun account.

The balance consists of an investment portfolio, which stood at $156.2 million at 10-31 08. This is termed the "Endowment Fund".

It is important to understand that, according to the $PLC's own Financial Statements, there are essentially no restrictions on this fund. In the Charity world, this is not what is commonly understood by an "endowment", which is usually dedicated to specific purposes, and often confined to spending income only. As Daniel Borochoff, President of the American Institute of Philanthropy, told Bill O'Reilly in 2001:

"They want to build up their reserves just like you'd probably like to be a multimillionaire so you could live off the interest...It's not really an endowment [just] because the board called it that."  (See NPI/SPLC Report II, Pp17-18)

Proof of Borochoff's view of the $PLC strategy arose in 2008. Endowments are usually tapped in poor years, for operating expenses. But the $PLC transferred $4 million from its "Operating Fund" to its "Endowment Fund" last year—a clear demonstration of the management's Scrooge-like priorities.

It is when one examines the details of this "Endowment Fund" that the $PLC's heroic dedication to money-making becomes glaring. P14 of the Financial Statements reveals that of the $156.2 million:

    * $20.7Million (13.3%) was in "Cash and cash equivalents";
    * $18.8Million (12%) was in "Fixed income mutual funds";
    * $21Million    (13.4%) was in "U.S. equity mutual funds";
    * $14.1Million (9%) was in "International mutual funds".

So far, perhaps so good. But then:

    * $44.9 Million  (28.7%) was in "Hedge Funds";
    * $20.6Million  (13.2%) was in "U.S. equity alternative investments";
    * $6.1Million     (3.9%) was in "Private equity funds";
    * $9.9Million     (6.3%) was in "Fixed income alternative investments".

Some venturing into equity alternative investments (limited partnerships, leveraged buyout funds etc. which in 2008 proved to be horribly illiquid) might be permissible for a very large pool of capital seeking to provide for very long term and heavy spending commitments—a university, perhaps, with a massive payroll and plant. But the $PLC has disclosed no such commitments. With 52% of the "Endowment Fund" in these things, the management was clearly swinging for the fences for its own sake.

An idea of the potential problems arising from this exposure appears in Note 4, P15:

"At October 31, 2008, the Center has outstanding commitments to invest approximately $8,300,000 in limited partnerships and LLC's under capital commitment agreements."

This means that in 2009 the Southern Poverty "Law" Center is obligated to spend in on these investment projects more than the $8 million it spent on "Legal Services" in 2008!

Another insight into the $PLC's aggressiveness from P14: the "Operating fund", which functionally appears to be the Center's housekeeping account, had $4.9 Million in "common stock" and "Mutual fund" holdings – 13.8% of reported assets. Again curiously, obligations under the (relatively small) "gift annuity" and "pooled income" programs are held in the "Operating Fund". One might have thought they belonged where long-term investments are housed.

The unmistakable impression is that the "Endowment" is intended to be wholly focused on making capital gains, undistracted by the day to day (or even year to year) financial concerns of running the Center.

Page 14 also piously states:

"The Center's endowment fund maintains a broadly diversified investment portfolio oriented toward equity investments and strategies to take advantage of market inefficiencies. The Center's investment objectives are...achieved in partnership with an active investment advisory committee and external managers."

But there is no mention of the purpose served by hoarding all this money. Particularly given the heavy use of mutual funds, which are not the sort of thing "external managers" are needed to run but which must be selected by someone, the impression is that a great deal of senior management's time goes to grooming this portfolio.

In FY 2008, the $PLC reported raising $32.4 million from the public.

But expenditures came in at only $30.7 million. In the charity world, this is somewhat embarrassing, because competing fund-raisers can argue that a surplus means you don't need more donations.

Expenditures included $8 million on legal services and $12.9 million on "education"—presumably mainly under the tendentiously-named "Teaching Tolerance" program, which seems to mainly consist of glorifying minorities. Fundraising took $5.4 million (16.7% of revenue). (I have seen it suggested that the "Education" expenditure includes much mailing which should be considered fund-raising.)

Officer's salaries took $1,275,725 (3.9%) Highest paid is Richard Cohen, President and CEO, at $348,652. Morris Dees got $336,072, a 2.8% increase. The top five non-officer employees were paid an aggregate of $747,128 (up 2.3%) including $143,206 for Mark Potok (a 3.2% increase).

Non-officer compensation as a whole took 33.1% of income. Once again poor Heidi Beirich did not place.

For perspective, the cost of living in Montgomery, Alabama, where the $PLC has its notorious "Poverty Palace" headquarters, is just 77% of the U.S. national average. Median household income is $41,676.

On the other hand, the $PLC constantly proclaims the likelihood of right-wing violence. And apparently believes it: three of the top five "independent contractors" it reports provide security services. Under these circumstances, it seems strange and ungenerous that the two figures most in the public eye—Mark Potok and Heidi Beirich—should rank so low in compensation.

From its "Endowment Fund", the $PLC gave nothing ($0) to its alleged causes. By contrast, the Chais Foundation, with approximately the same amount of assets but no public fund raising effort, is reported to have given $12.5 million away in each of the last two years.

However, there is nothing to stop charitable foundations giving grants to other 501(c)(3)s!

No doubt in this terrible year—with like-minded charities suffering from the stock market crash, recession, and Bernard Madoff—the Southern Poverty Law Center will be stepping forward to help!

The $PLC has achieved virtually a sacred status with the Main Stream Media. Its pronouncements are effectively accorded Papal Infallibility. But in reality, it is merely a bunch of bigoted ethnic-special-interest thugs.

VDARE.com does not to expect everyone to concede this. But we look forward to seeing how this group of pirates can be defended from the charge of money-grubbing.

It is not possible to better Joan Wypijewski's scathing advice to her liberal readers in The Nation: (You Can't Get There From Here, February 26 2001):

"What is the Poverty Law Center doing...? Mainly making money...the center doesn't devote all of its resources to any kind of fight....A few years ago the American Institute of Philanthropy gave the SPLC an F for 'excessive' reserves. I did not call you "unsolicited," John, and that is very misleading. You repeatedly urge all WNs to call and speak to you on this thread, if they have something to ask or offer, and I called you with a very specific purpose in mind: to offer you a meeting location in NJ, because your supporter (Burzum88 on ECWU) had asked for my help.

That's right, folks. I called this guy to help him secure a meeting location on private property that couldn't be interrupted, and I did so. He wanted to have a private meeting in NJ following his Boston speech, and I was willing to facilitate that and hear this man out by offering him our hospitality. When April 11th came, his book didn't come out and there was no speech given; John de Nugent stayed in Pa., with no regard for those to whom he gave his word that he was launching this movement on April 11th (including Henrik Holappa), and launched a vicious attack on me for simply saying this was regrettable.

John Derbyshire has rather pointedly described the fate of those who would criticize Jews in a remarkable exchange with Joey Kurtzman, a Jewish editor of the website Jewcy.com:

So far as the consequences of ticking off Jews are concerned: ... I was making particular reference to respectable rightwing journalism, most especially in the U.S. I can absolutely assure you that anyone who made general, mildly negative, remarks about Jews would NOT — not ever again — be published in the Wall Street Journal opinion pages, The Weekly Standard, National Review, The New York Sun, The New York Post, or The Washington Times. I know the actual people, the editors, involved here, and I can assert this confidently.

I thought about this when reading Peter Brimelow's speech at Michael Hart's Preserving Western Civilization conference in early February. Brimelow runs the excellent racial realism site VDARE.com, an immigration reform site that champions the interests of the American majority — European-Americans.

For this, Brimelow and his writers have drawn the wrath of the mainstream and liberal left, particularly the SPLC — routinely referred to as the $PLC at VDARE. [Editorial note: TOO announces that from now on it will shamelessly copy this wonderfully accurate designation.)

He has also been shunned by mainstream conservative publications such as National Review where he was once Senior Editor. Jonah Goldberg, who personifies the changing of the guard at NR after Brimelow left, referred to Brimelow as "a once-respected conservative voice." As Brimelow notes, NR is "a once-conservative, now respected, magazine." I'm sure that the $PLC couldn't be happier that Jonah Goldberg and his ilk are ensconced at NR.

Brimelow introduces the problem he sees the West facing, delivered in the form of an observation followed by a question:

This is a problem which we see throughout the Western world—an unprecedentedly huge influx of non-traditional immigration. The result of this is that every major Western nation will be a minority in its homeland the foreseeable future. It takes less time in some places and more time in others, but the calculations can easily be made. . . .

What's so amazing about this transformation is that it has no economic benefit for the traditional people of the Western nations that are voluntarily giving up their identity — and their political power. As Brimelow phrases it, the question then becomes "Why are these countries doing this to themselves if they are not benefiting their native-born — their own people?"

We at TOO have little doubt about the main force behind these transformations: The organized Jewish community. These transformations have nothing to do with economics but everything to do with ethnic activism and identity politics.

There are hints of this in Brimelow's talk, although it was probably impolitic for him to mention it given the strong participation of Jews at the conference. As noted by The Searchlight (an $PLC-like outfit in the UK that is now running a "Hope not hate" campaign against the BNP), the conference was "an attempt to create a new ideological pole friendlier to Jewish participation, but within the broader white nationalist movement. They would bind Islamophobia and nativism with scientific racism." Not quite the way I'd say it, but you get the idea.

Brimelow points to the growing Jewish support for Democratic politics in America — despite their relative prosperity. Jews are an economic elite but their voting patterns much more resemble non-white minorities — they "earn like Episcopalians and vote like Puerto Ricans," as Milton Himmelfarb phrased it.

Indeed, Brimelow notes that higher percentages of Jews voted for Obama than the average for other minorities (83% to 79%). Why this is so "is a good question and in some ways the most important question in the immigration debate. And I recommend it to you for further discussion."

Never one to pass up an invitation like that, I would point out that from the time they came to the US in large numbers, Jews have had a very negative view of traditional Americans and their culture. As Elliott Abrams put it, the mainstream Jewish community "clings to what is at bottom a dark vision of America, as a land permeated with anti-Semitism and always on the verge of anti-Semitic outbursts." As portrayed by the Jewish media, "Western civilization is ... a failing, dying culture, but at worst it is ... sick and evil compared to other cultures." It's all about identity politics.

Brimelow gets right down to brass tacks about one side of the equation—he discusses and defends the interests of whites.

Obama doesn't have 43% of his appointees white Protestants, in fact I don't think even 4% are white Protestants. So you have to ask yourself what's going on here. How can the founding stock of the country have so completely lost control? They could reasonably regard the Obama administration as kind of an occupation government: a coalition of united minorities that succeeded in uniting the minorities and dividing the majority.

As fate would have it, this observation resonated with something I had just read about the way Bolsheviks had assumed power in 1917 at the beginning of the Soviet era. A shadowy Executive Committee ruled, and among those with power "more than half were Jewish socialists." Native Russians did not even make up a quarter. One participant noted that "the most striking thing about the composition of the EC was the number of foreign elements." The deaths of tens of millions of underrepresented white non-Jews followed. Brimelow offered further room for discussion when last month he published Kevin MacDonald's VDARE.com piece Memories Of Madison—My Life In The New Left. There MacDonald reiterated his argument that radical Jews of the 1960s "had destructive fantasies in which the revolution would result in 'humiliation, dispossession, imprisonment or execution of the oppressors.'"

In particular, the dispossession component is being accomplished by support for massive non-traditional immigration. MacDonald argued that "Jewish activism on behalf of non-white immigration can be directly traced back to Jewish activists on the left." Indeed, "Massive non-white immigration into Western societies has been a project of the Jewish left for pretty much the entire last century. The Jewish left has been the most influential component of the organized Jewish community. And even when a significant number of Jews defected from the left, giving rise to the neoconservative movement, they retained the traditional Jewish attitudes on immigration." As with Solzhenitsyn above, MacDonald connected such displacement of a native population with the genocide that occurred in the 1920s and 1930s in the Soviet Union. After the success of the Bolshevik Revolution, "Jewish radicals were able to actually carry out in the USSR the fantasies of the New Left Jewish radicals in the US—i.e., the 'humiliation, dispossession, imprisonment or execution of the oppressors.'"

MacDonald is proposing that a substantial component of the Jewish activism in the area of immigration is motivated by aggressive hostility toward the European American majority. Another, more defensive explanation of why Jews have led immigration reform movements that favor non-whites is the belief that a less homogeneously white America will be less likely to give rise to a powerful anti-Semitic movement. In an oft-cited passage, Jewish activist Earl Raab wrote:

The Census Bureau has just reported that about half of the American population will soon be non-white or non-European. And they will all be American citizens. We have tipped beyond the point where a Nazi-Aryan party will be able to prevail in this country.

We [Jews] have been nourishing the American climate of opposition to bigotry for about half a century. That climate has not yet been perfected, but the heterogeneous nature of our population tends to make it irreversible— and makes our constitutional constraints against bigotry more practical than ever.

It seems likely that Raab's wish to protect Jews is assured. After all, Jews are now famously dominant in media, government, academia and finance (for better or for worse).

Meanwhile, the rest of us Americans are left with many of the less pleasant aspects of diversity and non-white immigration, as last weekend's news yet again drove home. As reported by CNN, a man wearing body armor used his car to block the rear door of an immigration services center, then entered the building and proceeded to murder thirteen people. "A federal law enforcement source identified the suspected gunman as Jiverly Wong. [The spokesman] said Wong, who was from Vietnam, was 41 and had changed his last name to Voong."

I'm sure I'm not the only one who breathed a sigh of relief when it turned out that the shooter was not a white male. As VDARE's Steve Sailer explained, "You can imagine how the Mainstream Media was itching to start typing denunciations of hate-filled white male anti-immigration rednecks when the news came in today that 13 people had been shot dead at an immigration center." Brimelow is even more pointed on this issue: "If the killer in the Binghamton immigration center massacre had been a white American, I have no doubt that much of the VDARE.COM Editorial Collective would be in police custody right now."

What has thus far been left unexplained is why there is any immigration to a region that has been devastated economically since at least the 1970s. Even the New York Times recognized this in a story about an area where "the number of 25-to-34-year-old residents in the 52 counties north of Rockland and Putnam declined by more than 25 percent. In 13 counties that include cities like Buffalo, Syracuse and Binghamton, the population of young adults fell by more than 30 percent." In a perverse side note, The Times adds that "population growth upstate might have lagged even more but for the influx of 21,000 prison inmates, who accounted for 30 percent of new residents." Is this the kind of place that needs legions of new immigrants?

VDARE.com's Brenda Walker today made the broader point clear:

The problem of rampaging immigrants is not guns or unfriendly Americans or conservative radio programs or VDARE.com. The problem is the strangely persistent myth among elites and the media that millions from Somalia and Iraq and Red China can be plunked into our unique society and be expected to get along like they were putting on a different coat. . . . Immigration as a marker of the imaginary one-worlder multicultural paradise has been a screaming failure. The symptoms are everywhere, from ethnic gangs to mass murder.

Someday someone might look into this phenomenon, for it seems to fit the pattern of dispossession of traditional Americans. According to one blog, the US State Department has adopted a policy to spread refugees out to small and middle-sized American cities and away from the traditional "gateway cities." Research found that "eleven top cities that had the largest refugee populations as a percentage of the foreign born in the city" were:

Erie, PA

Binghamton, NY

Spokane, WA

Portland, ME

Lincoln, NE

Waterloo-Cedar Falls, IA

Burlington, VT

Manchester, NH

Odd that all eleven of these cities are overwhelmingly white gentile locales.

When considering this crazy jumble of immigration situations I've described, casual observers may mutter that the system sure seems to be broken. But as I've stressed before, the problem is not that the system is broken; rather, the problem is that it is working as intended. Whereas Ms. Walker notes that "a homogenous nation evokes loyalty, stability and harmony," the sad fact is that Jews in general detest these qualities in others. For Jews, homogeneous masses of white people reminds them of marching storm troopers with swastikas on their uniforms. As I wrote last year, "Jews instinctively fear and feel threatened by nationalistic, particularistic societies."

To me the lesson seems clear: Majority white Americans need to develop a sense of solidarity and then act on their interests. This too was the lesson Solzhenitsyn drew from his experience in the Soviet gulag: "More compact or tribally-minded peoples managed to look out for one another in the harsh conditions of camp life, and so stood a better chance of survival." Time is not on the side of traditional Americans, so let this be a minor wake up call. Are you willing to allow the Powers That Be to elect a new people and replace you? I know I'm not.

Somali Muslims Changing Small Town:

It has been nearly 20 years since Somalia last had a functioning government. Islamic jihadists now control most of the country-and shariais the law of the land. Tens of thousands of Somali refugees have resettled in America in recent years to escape the chaos of their homeland, which is located in the Horn of Africa. But the transition isn't going smoothly in one small town.

At first glance, Shelbyville is your typical sleepy southern hamlet. It's nestled in middle Tennessee, where the walking horse is king. There's Main St., the local sheriff, a movie theatre. It's all very "Mayberry," except for one big difference: the recent arrival of hundreds of Somali Muslims.

Small Town Having Difficulties

So when hundreds of Somalis began turning up in the town—many of them dressed in traditional Islamic garb—locals quickly took notice. "They've had an impact here. Unfortunately, it's not been a good impact," said Brian Mosely, are porter for the local Shelbyville Times-Gazette. "I found that there was just an enormous culture clash going on here,"he said. "The Somalis were—according to a lot of the people I talked to here—were being very, very rude, inconsiderate, very demanding.They would go into stores and haggle over prices. They would also demand to see a male salesperson, would not deal with women in stores"

Different People, Different Culture

The problems extend to local schools—where some Somali students won't talk to female administrators. There have also been issues with local law enforcement. Shelbyville is home to about 17,000 people. The town's Somali populationis estimated to be between 400 and 1,000. "We're talking about people who have not had any experience with Western civilization," he explained. "They don't know the language. Things like running water are a miracle to some of these folks . . . you don't take people from a totally alien culture, put them into a community, and then say 'alright, you must get along.'

Little Chance to Adapt

Abdirizak Hassan is the director of the Somali Community Center in nearby Nashville. He says the state of Tennessee has no programs to help immigrants integrate into their new surroundings. "They come, and the only thing they can do is go to work, and then after work they go back to the apartment," Hassan said. "They're totally isolated and there's no interaction between them and the locals." He added that some have even expressed a desire to return to Somalia. "And sometimes you have families, like, a single mother with eight kids, or seven kids or six kids, and you expect her to go to work in six months time with no English, no driver's skills, nothing? I mean,sometimes it's impossible." So how did so many Somalis end up in rural Shelbyville? The answer canbe complicated.

Taken in by the U.S.

The State Department helps resettle refugees from war-torn countries like Somalia in the United States. The resettlement project is one part of a taxpayer-funded refugee aid program with a billion dollar budget. Immigrants are chosen from UN refugee camps. The selected refugees then undergo a few days of cultural orientation and are soon on their way to America. Pierce said the resettlement program helps improve America's image inthe eyes of the world.

A Rocky Transition?

More than 150,000 Somalis now live in the U.S., most in larger cities like Minneapolis, Nashville, Boston, Seattle and Columbus, Ohio. Gang activity has been a major concern. And according to the U.S.government, at least a dozen young Somali Americans have returned home in recent months to join an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group calledal-Shabab.

Motivated by Jobs

"Our experience has been that refugees are very successful at resettling," said Holly Johnson of the Tennessee Office of Refugees. Johnson said the federal government contracts with social welfare groups at the local level to help set the refugees up in apartments, find themj obs and ease their transition to America. After a few months in their settlement cities, the refugees are free to move around the country and live wherever they please.

Enter Shelbyville

Somalis in other cities were drawn to Shelbyville by the jobs offered at the local Tyson chicken processing plant.The plant came under fire from the Department of Justice in 2001 for hiring illegal Hispanic immigrants.

Getting Past Controversy

Despite locals' continued complaints over its hiring practices, Tyson says it is doing things by the book. A Tyson spokesman said the company is following federal employment guidelines—and that the majority ofi ts employees are local residents. The Tyson plant generated national controversy last fall when it dropped Labor Day as a paid holiday in favor of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr. The decision was later reversed, but longtime local residents say the incident was symbolic of the larger changes taking place in Shelbyville—changes they are coping with as best they can. "We're probably as culturally diversified as any small town in America."said Chief Swing. "There's been a lot of changes. But I think most people just take it in stride and keep going along with it."
