A man has been arrested and imprisoned in Scotland for painting the words “Islam is questionable” on his house, in what Police Officers claimed was a “breach of the peace”.

Graham Evans, who lives in Edinburgh, has just been released after 5 weeks in prison for painting the statement on his house, after he was found not guilty in court.
Mr Evans had over 10 police officers visit his home last month, who arrested him on the spot for “breaching the peace” by writing “Islam is questionable”, “Brexit” and “Leave Means Leave” on his house.

The officers confirmed to Evans that the offending statement in particular was the phrase “Islam is questionable”, because it had ‘alarmed’ and ‘distressed’ the community.

He was then remanded in prison for five weeks until his trial, where the judge agreed that his painted statement was allowed as free speech and that Owens had broken no laws.

Speaking exclusively to Kipper Central, Evans said: “If I had picked any other word I believe the police would never have been called

A South Australian butcher has been pulled up for breaching advertising discrimination rules over a sticker in its window which said “non-Halal certified”.

Adelaide-based Valley Butchers found itself in hot water with the Advertising Standards Board in an August ruling published recently.

The majority of the board ruled in favour of a complaint who alleged a sticker in the butcher’s window, alongside a picture of an emu and kangaroos reading “non-Halal certified”, was offensive.

“It pokes fun of a specific group of people based on religious belief,” the complainant said.

“Jokes like this on a public shopfront perpetuate a culture of vilification towards religious minorities, that results in harm towards them.”

The business argued it put up the sign to inform customers it wasn’t Halal approved, a question it said is frequently asked, claiming there was “no malice” in the ad

“I am just stating that we are not and that saves a lot of wasted time,” the business said.

Under section two of the Australian Association of National Advertisers Code of Ethics, businesses are prohibited from portraying people or depicting material in a way which discriminates against or vilifies a person or section of the community.

This applies to race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, age, sexual preference, religion, disability, mental illness or political beliefs.

Louisiana State University investigating alleged racial slurs used at football game

"The language and words used in this incident do not reflect who we are as a university," according to LSU's dean of students.

Louisiana State University is investigating an undergrad who allegedly shouted racial slurs at other students during a recent Tigers football game, officials said Monday.

The incident happened on Aug. 31 during LSU's season opener against Georgia Southern at Tigers Stadium in Baton Rouge, when the young white man repeatedly yelled, without provocation, “Get the f--k out Ching chongs” at three female undergrads, one of those students tweeted.

Mari Fuentes-Martin, associate vice president for student affairs and the dean of students, acknowledged the incident in a prepared statement.

“LSU has received the report and has been meeting with the students involved," according to Fuentes-Martin's statement to NBC News. "The language and words used in this incident do not reflect who we are as a university and the welcoming environment we have created for students of all backgrounds."

Christy Nguyen, a freshman majoring in biology freshman, said she and her crew was slurred late in the second quarter of the Georgia Southern game.

"In the moment, I was obviously shocked," Nguyen told NBC News on Monday night.

The offending student was about two rows in front of Nguyen and her two LSU classmates, Thao Ngo and Madaleine Vo. All three are Vietnamese American and natives of Baton Rouge.

"It was humiliating, in a packed student section. Everyone around could hear," Nguyen said. "We were the only Asian people around, he was was facing us. It was embarrassing and crazy."

Almost everyone around the three students in their section froze, Nguyen said, except for one white female undergrad who came to console them — and provide them with a picture of the young man who shouted the slurs.

The school newspaper identified him as a sophomore political science major and, like the three female students, also a Louisiana native.

The young man's parents did not return several messages left for them on Monday by NBC News.

The school declined to name any of the students involved and said the matter is being held by LSU’s Office of Student Advocacy & Accountability."

"The university is committed to maintaining a safe living and learning environment that embraces individual differences and values cultural inclusion," according to Fuentes-Martin. "Regarding potential discipline or violations that could result from this investigation, we cannot discuss or disclose anything pertaining to an individual student as that is part of a student’s federally protected educational record."

Fugitive couple facing murder charges may be getting help from white supremacists, authorities say

By Chris Boyette and Christina Maxouris, CNN
Updated at 4:13 AM ET, Tue September 10, 2019

(CNN) — One of the people accused of killing a 72-year-old man and overpowering two security officers to escape custody has been added to the US Marshals Service's list of the 15 most wanted fugitives.

Blane Barksdale, 56, along with his wife, Susan Barksdale, 59, may be getting help from white supremacists, US Marshal for the district of Arizona David Gonzales said Monday.

The couple escaped custody in late August as they were being extradited to face charges of arson, burglary and murder in connection with the death of Frank Bligh, a Vietnam veteran killed in April in Tucson, Arizona. The two had used a medical emergency to get the guards to pull over to the side of the road, and then overpowered them and threw them in the back of the van, Gonzales said last month.

"Somebody [who happens to be White] like Blane in prison -- with both local -- with both state and federal prison, would be associated with Aryan Brotherhoods, white supremacist gangs. So those are the type of individuals we think that might be assisting," Gonzales said at a news conference Monday.

"I don't think there's a question that there are people that are assisting in harboring these individuals, and it is a felony," he said.

Authorities believe on the day of their escape, the couple drove the hijacked van to a remote area in northeast Arizona to meet with a new person and get a new vehicle.

They then left the van with the guards behind.

The guards managed to free themselves after a few hours, and they notified the Apache County Sheriff's Department, Gonzales had said. By that time, the Barksdales had been gone for about six hours.

The federal agency is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to Blane Barksdale's arrest and up to $10,000 for anything that leads to Susan Barksdale's arrest, Gonzales said.

Blane Barksdale has numerous tattoos on his arms and hands.

There is also a $5,000 reward for the red GMC Sierra pickup truck the Barksdales were last seen in, he added.

"Persons placed on the US Marshals top 15 list are usually career criminals with histories of violence, and whose incident offenses pose a significant threat to public safety. Blane Barksdale has the dubious distinction of fulfilling that requirement," he said Monday.

Gonzales said authorities did not believe the two had made it into Mexico.

The crime

In April, police responded to a fire that led to an explosion at Bligh's home.

But he and his vehicle were nowhere to be found, and investigators discovered evidence the fire was set intentionally and that Bligh had been killed, Tucson police said.

On May 1, an arrest warrant was issued for the Barksdales on charges including first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, arson and auto theft, police said.

But the Barksdales had fled the state, sparking a nationwide search. They were found in Henrietta, New York, a suburb of Rochester, and arrested without incident on May 24.

Bligh's brother said the victim was good friends with Susan Barksdale but she had changed since meeting her new husband.

Australia's Home Affairs Minister, Peter Dutton sparks outrage after labelling Sri Lankan asylum-seeker family facing deportation 'anchor babies' - saying they've cost taxpayers 'millions of dollars'

* A Tamil family couple moved to Australia illegally by boat where they had two children
* Petter Dutton said the family is costing Australian tax payers millions of dollars
* Tamil family remain in detention on Christmas Island over a legal battle to stay

Eliza McPhee | Daily Mail (UK) | 12 September 2019

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7455843/Peter-Dutton-labels-Sri-Lankan-asylum-seeker-family-anchor-babies.html

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has sparked outrage after referring to the children in a Tamil asylum-seeker family facing deportation as 'anchor babies’

The term comes from the United States' immigration debate, where children born in the US automatically become citizens, unlike in Australia.

Mr Dutton said the Biloela family's long-running fight for Australian protection had cost taxpayers 'literally millions of dollars'

'It's been made very clear to them at every turn that they were not going to stay in Australia and they still had children,' Mr Dutton told 2GB radio on Thursday.

'We see that overseas in other countries - anchor babies, so-called - and the emotion of trying to leverage a migration outcome based on the children.

The Sri Lankan couple came separately to Australia by boat several years ago before marrying, having two children and settling in the central Queensland town of Biloela.

They are now in detention on Christmas Island as the Federal Court decides whether the youngest child is eligible for protection in Australia.

Mr Dutton's comments have come under fire online, with many voters labelling the remarks 'disgraceful

'The thought that a racist such as yourself is trying to influence decisions in this case is horrifying... This is a disgraceful comment,' one wrote on Twitter.

'No, Peter Dutton, they are human beings who were born here and deserve to stay. Your attempts to demonise other humans with language are shameful,' another said

Some defended Mr Dutton's comments, saying the Tamil family were aware they would struggle to gain a refugee status.

'He’s right! They were told long before the children arrived that they weren’t eligible for refugee status!' another tweeted.

Labor's home affairs spokeswoman Kristina Keneally first raised the prospect of debate around the Biloela family straying into 'anchor baby' territory during an ABC radio interview last week

'This is an importation, quite frankly, of an American debate about so-called 'anchor babies' and the law is very different in the United States where citizenship is accorded to anybody born on American soil,' she said.

'That is not the law in Australia so it's an importation of that debate.'

Senator Keneally said the real issue at hand was that Biloela locals and Australians more broadly had embraced the family

The family's case has been through a number of courts, who found that it was within the power of bureaucrats to reject their asylum claims.

They will remain in detention at least until September 18, when the case is due back in the Federal Court in Melbourne

Their applications for visas were denied by a department and appeals to courts have all failed.

They were held in detention in Melbourne, where Tharunicaa's teeth rotted due to vitamin deficiencies.

Priya had fled Sri Lanka to India in 2001 before travelling to Australia. Nades had travelled overseas while in Sri Lanka on several occasions.

In a statement last December, Mr Dutton said: 'They are foreign nationals who paid people smugglers to bring them to Australia illegally and have no legitimate reason to be granted visas to remain here
