Migration minister Mark Harbers resigned on Tuesday in a bad blow to the government just ahead of European elections.

His departure adds to the struggle faced by centre-right Prime Minister Mark Rutte as he tries to counter a surge in anti-immigration populists who look poised to win big in the elections on Thursday.

Harbers was caught out over a report featuring statistics on crimes perpetrated by asylum-seekers in the Netherlands that he presented to parliament.

In the report, misdemeanours such as shoplifting had their own separate categories but serious crimes such as sexual assault, murder and manslaughter were lumped together under the category 'other' with no disaggregation

The revelation of that omission by the newspaper De Telegraaf triggered anger among lawmakers, some of whom questioned whether it was a deliberate attempt to skew reception of the report.

Anti-immigration lawmaker Geert Wilders accused the ministry of 'sweeping under the carpet' allegations of serious crimes among the thousands of asylum seekers in the Netherlands. Wilders said the resignation was 'the only correct conclusion.'

The accusations of a cover-up led to a swift internal investigation at the justice ministry.

Late Tuesday, during a parliamentary debate, Harbers announced he had offered his resignation. He assumed 'total responsibility' for not correctly informing the chamber but said it was 'not deliberate,' Dutch media reported.

Rutte responded by saying he 'respected' Harbers's decision to step down, but declared on Twitter that it 'incredibly regrettable that the cabinet must say goodbye to such a talented and committed liberal

A fourth person, a 20-year-old man of African origin, was found earlier in the day hidden in the base of a dump truck, where he was in danger of being crushed by the vehicle's axles

He had to be helped out of the truck by rescuers at the port of Melilla, a Spanish enclave on the north African coast.

Officers shared a picture of a man in his twenties hiding behind a car's dashboard, while another person was found behind a car's rear seats.

Morocco has become a point of access for undocumented African migrants to cross into Europe.

The refugees included a 15-year-old girl, a 21-year-old man and a 20-year-old man

Two had to be treated by medics for asphyxia, disorientation and joint pain.

Three people - who were the drivers of the intercepted cars - have been arrested. They are all Moroccan men, without ties to Melilla, and are aged 19, 30 and 31.

This latest case follows other attempts to cross into Melilla, after two men were discovered hiding inside mattresses strapped to the top of a van in January.

An Afghan asylum seeker who allegedly attacked random members of the public with a knife was 'fuelled' by a desire to kill English people, a court heard.

Samiulahaq Akbari, 32, is accused of swinging a 10ins kitchen knife at three 'total strangers' within a 10-minute period in Thornton Heath and Croydon in south London after 'demanding to know their nationality'.

Jurors at the Old Bailey in London were told he approached the first alleged victim, Nicholas Speight, in a Tesco Extra in Thornton Heath on January 8, tapping him on the shoulder.

After Mr Speight confirmed he was English, Akbari allegedly 'took a powerful swing at him' with the blade


Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe said Mr Speight could not have known that 'events would unfold with such frightening speed' following that 'fateful reply'.

She claimed Akbari 'settled on him because Mr Speight was English'.

Ms Stonecliffe added: 'This defendant had set out deliberately to threaten, harm and kill members of the public by virtue of their nationality, or what Mr Akbari perceived to be their nationality - they were English.'

Despite only lasting a matter of seconds, jurors heard it was more 'by luck rather than any design' that Mr Speight managed to kick Akbari off and escape from the attack without a mark on him.

Within 10 minutes or so he allegedly pulled a knife on two other men 'fuelled with the same intention' in Croydon; first in the Kebabish restaurant and then in the Plough on the Pond pub.

He allegedly accosted John Hoy as he sat at a table with three friends getting ready to eat having just come from a pool tournament at the pub nearby.

Jurors heard Akbari 'aggressively and repeatedly' asked Mr Hoy where he was from before going behind the counter, arming himself with a huge red-handled knife and lunging at him.

It was only when the men fought back that Akbari fled, Ms Stonecliffe said.

Akbari then made his way up to the pub where he confronted Barry Watkins, who was on his way out clutching his pool cue and case.

Jurors were shown CCTV footage of him marching Mr Watkins back inside where Akbari similarly demanded to know their nationality

Ms Stonecliffe added: 'He and his friends replied that they were English, at which point the defendant started lunging at them with the knife

The group 'perhaps somewhat heroically' managed to wedge a table between them and the knifeman, forcing Akbari again to flee.

Akbari, of Thornton Heath, south London, denies attempted murder and wounding with intent against Mr Speight and threatening Mr Hoy with an offensive weapon.

Jurors were told he has admitted two charges of affray over the altercations with Mr Hoy and Mr Watkins along with threatening Mr Watkins with an offensive weapon, namely the knife.

Ms Stonecliffe told jurors Akbari is expected to say he was 'too drunk' to form any intention to kill.

But she said his actions were 'deliberate and considered'.

She added: 'He knew exactly what he was doing and he took care not to be caught
Ms Stonecliffe read extracts from transcripts of the 'frantic' 999 calls made by Akbari's cousin in which he told the operator: 'He said he wants to kill the English people. I can see his eyes, he's serious.'

In another the cousin added: 'He will do it. He's trying to run and he will kill someone. Please come quickly.'

The court heard that when officers finally arrived Akbari jumped a string of fences to try to escape.

They eventually found him lying in a back garden 'pretending to be out of it' so they 'would leave him alone'.

A Kazakh man has been hacked to death in broad daylight in the middle of a German street with a 'samurai sword', police said

The dead man's Syrian roommate was arrested after the 36-year-old victim was repeatedly stabbed in Stuttgart yesterday in front of horrified onlookers.

Authorities confirmed a man was killed in the road in the German city Fasanenhof district with a 'sword-like object' that looked like a samurai weapon.

Screaming witnesses tried in vain to save the man as he was hacked at by his attacker, but he died at the scene.

The suspect then reportedly fled on a bicycle but was caught that evening following a frantic police helicopter manhunt.

Officers also found a 'sword-like object' discarded in a bush near the scene, thought to be the murder weapon

Police and prosecutors said today that a 28-year-old Syrian man who apparently had shared an apartment until recently with the 36-year-old victim was arrested.

There was no immediate details of a possible motive for the stabbing yesterday evening, which followed an argument between the two men.     

The victim - who has not been publicly identified - is believed to be of German-Kazakh origin and used to share a flat in the city with the suspect, Welt reports.

According to Bild, the suspect was heard by witnesses repeatedly shouting at the victim: 'Why did you do that?' However, the motive behind the attack has not been revealed

Footage of the brutal slaying was shared on social media today and has been viewed more than 10,000 times.

It shows hysterical bystanders screaming at the suspect to stop as he stands over his helpless victim in the middle of the street and repeatedly slashes him with the sword.

Watching from the balcony of a nearby apartment, the woman filming says: 'Call the police. Did you call the police?'

A man replies: 'Yes, I did. He's totally stabbing him.

The attacker is then seen lifting the sword above his head and plunging it repeatedly into the victim.

A second more graphic clip filmed by another resident shows the suspect threatening members of the public as they try to intervene and rescue the victim.

After ordering them to get back he lifts up the sword and brings it down on the bloodied victim once more before running away

A spokesman for Polizei Stuttgart told Bild: 'We have arrested one person and it is being investigated whether they qualify as the perpetrator.'

Stuttgart is the capital of the southern German state of Baden-Württemberg and is the sixth-largest city in Germany. It is generally regarded as one of the country's safest cities, according to Welt, with several major car manufacturers headquartered there.
