A racist AFL fan who called an indigenous star player a 'monkey' online has been handed a two-year ban from attending games

The league has vowed to impose tough penalties on 'cowards' who taunt and bully stars via their social media platforms, after an increase in the amount of incidents.

The unnamed person unleashed a tirade against 22-year-old West Coast Eagles player, Liam Ryan, on the official Channel 7 AFL Instagram account.

The league traced the account back to a member of the Richmond Football Club, and the two year ban was imposed

The suspension can be lifted from March 2021, but the individual involved will also be required to take part in an Aboriginal cultural awareness and education program.

'We have to continue to fight racism by shining a light where and when it happens, by standing with the person vilified and attacked,' AFL's General Manager of Inclusion and Social Policy, Tanya Hosch told Nine

'The comments directed at Liam Ryan are only the latest in what appears to be an increasing number of racist posts appearing on the players, and broader, online platforms,' Ms Hosch said in a statement.

'The AFL took action regarding on-field racism over 20 years ago, we take action at our stadiums and grounds, but we are now facing vicious commentary appearing on players own accounts, and industry platforms

The issue made headlines after teammate Nic Naitanui called out the comments on his Twitter account on Sunday night, posting screenshots and asking 'when will it end?'

Ryan has since taken to social media, pleading with people to consider the implications of their words and actions. 

The Instagram post attempts to give a brief explanation of why the term 'monkey' is so offensive to indigenous people.

'Educate yourself why we take this word seriously,' the post read.

'When European explorers and settlers encountered Aboriginal people from the 1600s-1800s they often said that Aboriginal people were not humans but were actually animals - like apes or monkeys.

'Such ideas not only justified European superiority, but also massacres, other forms of abuse and stealing the land.

HONG KONG — Officers on the Indonesian resort island of Bali found a primate the size of a human toddler curled up in a rattan basket this weekend — in the middle of an international airport.

"At first, we thought it was a monkey," Dewa Delanata, the head of the quarantine office at Bali's international airport, told the Jakarta Post newspaper. The officers were afraid to open the basket, he added, because they assumed that the animal "would be aggressive and run loose in the departure area."

It turns out that the 2-year-old primate was a sleeping orangutan.

Officials say it was drugged and then smuggled into the airport on Friday by a Russian tourist. "The Russian deliberately used an inhumane method to take the orangutan to Russia," Mr. Dewa said

We should make a business rounding up Abo kids and selling them on the black market to Russians as  pets! But if you sedated them in the suitcase, and opened it in the airport expect mass destruction and more mayhem than an Orangutung!

Extract: The AFL has released a formal apology to Adam Goodes over the poor treatment he received at the end of his football career.

In 2013, the former Sydney Swans player singled out a 13-year-old girl in the crowd after she racially vilified the star by calling him an 'ape'.

Goodes faced backlash for the incident with AFL fans in the crowd constantly booing when he played while others posted racist comments and memes online.

The AFL said. 'The game did not do enough to stand with him and call it out.'
