Our safety betrayed by ugly cover-up over refugee program

SATURDAY night's race riot at Moomba proves our refugee program has made our streets unsafe, and the police and media cover-up must end.

This time, about 200 members of two armed gangs — one mainly Sudanese and the other Pacific Islander — stormed Melbourne's Federation Square to threaten police and bash each other.

Other Australians, many with children, fled for their lives.

This level of mass violence — like the terrorism threats and the shootings in Melbourne's north and Sydney's west — is relatively new to Australia and demands an explanation.

It is disgraceful that police and the media so often refuse to give it.

Yesterday's Sunday Age, for instance, refused to mention — again — that one of the gangs was African.

Police shied from identifying the ethnic background.

The ABC largely looked the other way.

This evasion — or deception — is standard. Google "Apex gang" and see for yourself how rarely reporters identify its key characteristic — that most members are African.

There seems almost a conspiracy to stop the public knowing that our refugee and immigration policies have become a threat, introducing new levels of violence and gun crime to our cities.

But if we don't know that truth, how can we take steps to save ourselves from worse?

How will people know we are importing danger when we take in people from war zones who have a martial culture, few employable skills, and very different cultural or religious values?

We are setting them up to join our underclass, and inviting them to salve their self-respect by taking pride in their racial or religious identity, in opposition to the rest of us.

It's no surprise, then, that Melbourne had two more mass brawls of Sudanese immigrants — one involving 100 people — last December, and a rash of home invasions and car thefts by the Apex gang. It's no surprise that Middle Eastern crime gangs, mostly Muslim Lebanese, are linked to many recent shootings in Melbourne. It's no surprise that the 21 Australians jailed in Australia for terrorism offences are Muslim, nine from Lebanese families.

Yet our political and media class often refuses to face these facts — and blinds the rest of us to them.

Let me list — again — examples of its record of deception. Apologies for repeating myself, but you need to know you are being betrayed:

IN 2008, police chief commissioner Christine Nixon claimed Sudanese refugees were "under-represented" in crime rates, when police figures showed they were over-represented by a factor of five.

IN 2010, Nixon's successor admitted that while police recorded the ethnic background of criminals, it was not "appropriate to be putting that sort of information out" because "sometimes they cause offence".

LAST year, the Salvation Army accused police of covering up a New Year's Eve brawl between more than 200 African youths in Melbourne's CBD. Police did not issue a media release and no media reported it.

IN 2014, the Sydney Morning Herald passed on police appeals to find six men who allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl, but omitted the men's most identifiable feature. The reporter later tweeted that while she'd written the men were of African appearance, "it was taken out in the subbing process".

LAST October, The Age reported Victoria had "the worst month for gun violence this year, with 10 incidents" in a report that omitted police claims that the shootings were linked to Lebanese families.

IN 2013, federal Labor frontbencher Mark Dreyfus claimed the "multicultural" community of Dandenong was "harmonious", even though police warned it actually suffered from a high crime rate and African and Pacific Islander gangs.

LAST year, senior ABC presenter Fran Kelly claimed she knew of no "links of people who have come in as refugees and then committed terrorist offences". In fact, the last three terror attacks here — the stabbing in Melbourne of two police officers and, in Sydney, the killing of two people in the Martin Place siege and the murder of a police accountant — were all by refugees, an important commonality rarely reported.

Yes, mentioning the ethnic or religious background of gangs and gangsters risks unfairly demonising the many law-abiding citizens of these ethnic groups or faiths.

But look at the price we're paying for shutting our eyes.

Discussing our Maori and African gangs last year, a detective from the Embona Armed Robbery Task Force confessed: "We are getting to the stage where local youths won't walk down the streets of Frankston any more because they fear trouble."

And now families flee Moomba.

Who imported this danger?

What are they doing to save us from more?

A Salvation Army officer with knowledge of the gangs told news.com.au the culprits "don't care" about the concerns their actions cause, and that a fear of being a labelled racist meant little effort was being done to tackle the gangs whose members predominantly hail from eastern Africa but also the Middle East and the South Pacific.

PLAYING ACTION HEROES

Apex St in Dandenong North, on Melbourne's eastern fringe, is a world away from the violence on Swanston St. With its red brick houses lining the tree-dotted footpath, and mini roundabouts ensuring cars keep a steady pace, it could look like any suburban street in Australia's major cities.

But the street, in an area that is one of the hubs of the city's African community, is said to be the inspiration for the Apex gang's name.

A primary group within Apex is young African men among living in Melbourne's outer suburbs. In recent months, police have arrested more than 30 gang members for crimes including robbery, assault and car theft, as part of Taskforce Tense that was set up in November.

The gang's penchant is for stealing luxury cars — but not to sell on.

"From what we are seeing, it's largely teenagers targeting high-end cars they want to drive," Narre Warren police detective Acting Sergeant Reuben McAllister told the Cranbourne Leader earlier this month.
"When they've finished with them, they dump them or burn them. Some of them still have not been found."

The group call their strategy for stealing "missioning". It involves sneaking into houses in the dead of night, stealing the car keys and driving off with the vehicle.

Southern Metro Region Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill told reporters on Thursday that a gang — which news.com.au understands to be the Apex gang — of car thieves was behind a recent string of violent aggravated burglaries.

Mr Hill said many of the alleged car thieves were playing out scenarios featured in The Fast and the Furious films and the video game Grand Theft Auto.
"They are playing out and living as action heroes in our streets," he said.

'THEY JUST KICK THE DOOR DOWN'

Late last year, police reported that former rivals from three main gangs had joined forces under the Apex umbrella. Since then the situation has worsened while the gangs have become more brazen.
"They used to sneak in. Now, they'll just kick the door in," a police source told the Herald Sun. There has even been reports of carjackings.

At least two home invasions were carried out by the group in Melbourne suburbs last week. The families targeted for their luxury cars were left traumatised by the thugs who were armed with a steel pole and a baseball bat.

A member of the gang also reportedly threatened to walk into a Melbourne police station and shoot a police detective who is investigating the criminal activities of the group. The officer has since been put on stress leave and a notice has been posted on the wall of the police station warning officers about the threats from the under-age gangsters.

Sometimes, incidents linked to gangs, have been far more tragic. In November, mum-of two Amanda Matheson died after her car was ploughed into by a stolen BMW careering down the wrong side of the road. The driver was just 15-years-old with the collision occurring 20 minutes from Dandenong.

Earlier this month, police claimed to have smashed a million-dollar burglary and car theft racket involving the Apex gang, with several of its members charged in relation to no less than 30 break-ins in the city's southeast over just a two-week period.

A total of 33 gang members have been arrested since Taskforce Tense was set up. Nevertheless, 150 gang members congregated in Melbourne on Saturday chanting "f*** the police" and "it's a public space, we have a right to be here".

It was not the first time gang members have made their presence known in the CBD, having previously run amok on New Year's Eve and last month's White Night.

Commanding Officer of the Salvation Army in Victoria, Brendan Nottle, told news.com.au that the motives behind Saturday's rampage were pretty simple. "I think its driven by this deep seated anger. They don't care what impact they have, they're saying 'we don't care what you think."

"It's no surprise to me this happened," he said. "The only surprise was it happened at 10pm when people were still around."

But a fear by politicians of being seen to target one community had left action on tackling the problem in limbo. "I think it's because there's a nervousness about being labelled a racist but the people that want to do something don't have racist motives,'' said Mr Nottle.

"I went public about this and I got labelled as being racist but my comments were the complete opposite. Having met African youth I know they have a deep sense of anger.

Those people prone to being in gangs needed to talk to other young people and, ultimately, come to feel that Australia was their home. "It's important we don't drive an even greater wedge with the African community. Rather than building a wall we need to be building a bridge."

THE first people to be found guilty by a jury of female genital mutilation in Australia have escaped a prison sentence and referred for a home detention assessment.

The former Sydney religious leader of the Shia Muslim sect, Dawoodi Bohra, Shabbir Mohammedbhai Vaziri, 59, was also referred for an assessment for 15 months home detention for being an accessory after the fact to the procedure.

Police arrested a Kilburn man, 27, over the incident on a bus on Churchill Rd, Kilburn, about 11.15am on March 16, during which the woman allegedly had her headscarf grabbed and was intimidated on the journey.

The man was charged with assault and offensive behaviour, and was granted police bail to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court next month.

Imam Tawhidi said the accused man should not have been granted bail and that laws around headscarves needed to change.

Try Hindley Street in the city on any night of the week and you will see young men of "Middle Eastern appearance" bashing White Australians. The moment the perpetrators are found to be of "Middle Eastern appearance," the police immediately lose interest and that's the end of the case. No arrest, no investigation ... nothing to see here, please move on and stop bleeding on the street. The founder of the Australian Arabic Council and the former Multicultural Affairs Commissioner has pleaded guilty to sexually penetrating a young boy.

Joseph Wakim, a regular social commentator on human rights affairs and a widowed father of three girls, appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court charged with three serious child sex offences on Friday.

The 53-year-old committed the offence in December last year in Bundoora, north of Melbourne, but was only charged in January.

Two of those charges - including grooming - were withdrawn on Friday but he pleaded guilty to sexually penetrating the boy.

Roland Jabbour, current chairman of the Australian Arabic Council, said the news about Mr Wakim's child sex offences came as 'a great surprise and a shock.'

'It's come completely out of the blue. It's completely out of character, and for anyone that has known Joe – he has always come across as of excellent character,' Mr Jabbour told Daily Mail Australia.

'Anyone that would know Joe would be taken aback ... he did outstanding work for the community and the council and contributed to a number of areas in social work and multiculturalism.' [more ...]
