Not content simply with entertaining children, Thomas the Tank Engine is on much bigger mission – to be a 'global force for good'.

The latest series of the animated TV programme features a female Kenyan train called Nia to teach young viewers about refugees.

A United Nations adviser worked on the storylines, helping to ensure greater equality and diversity on the fictional island of Sodor where the series is set.

Nia was first seen in August in a Thomas movie but joined the show permanently last month after losing her home and being displaced.

UN women's Africa programme adviser Tolulope Lewis-Tamoka told Radio Times she wanted the series to promote 'leadership and economic empowerment'.

As a kid , I'd go ride bikes, fly kites, catch yabbies in the creek or play cricket with the other neighbourhood kids.

I don't know how safe that kind of play is these days though. Depends on your area.
In the 1980's you'd never really see non whites. There weren't as many cases of kiddy fiddlers or sexual predators. It all comes down to what other people you have share your area with you.

In the area I live in now there are plenty of Boongs. I wouldn't trust them around your own kids. There is a bigger need for supervision.

The 80's was different. If you wanted to race BMX bikes, well you'd have to wait ages as on Saturday the club would be full of kids. Some of these clubs now are struggling to stay open now.

A lot of broken homes . You have to carve up the time with your kids with your ex, could be hard? You have to work harder to pay the house off because the Chindians came and made it more competitive to buy a place!

TV and video games are just " shut up machines".
