As Ukrainians flee Russian invasion, ordinary Australians are opening their homes

Inna Ilyenko and her eight-year-old son Andrii have fled war in Ukraine not once, but twice.

In 2014, when Russian-backed separatists took over her home town of Donetsk, the family was forced to relocate to the capital Kyiv.

Now, eight years on, the mother and son have just touched down in Sydney after Russia began bombing the country in February.

"The further away from the war we are, the better," Ms Ilyenko told The New Daily through an interpreter.

The 45-year-old mother had wanted to come to Australia for years, particularly to meet her online friend of two decades Anastasia Cortez, a Sydney-based motivational coach who grew up between Ukraine and Russia.

However, her visa application had been knocked back every time until now.

When Russia invaded Ukraine, her friend, Ms Cortez, raised money to pay for the mother and son's airfares.

But first they had to escape to Poland under the cover of night

But as masses of people flee across the border into Poland, Romania and Moldova, very few of them will make it to a faraway country like Australia.

It's not an easy process, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy put a ban on men aged between 18 and 60 from leaving the country last month.

Some Black and brown residents even faced racism and were turned back by European border authorities, regardless of their citizenship.

The Australian government has pledged to send visa applications from Ukrainian refugees "to the top of the pile" after the Russian invasion.

More than 4000 visas have been issued to Ukrainians since the war started in February, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Most of these visas are temporary, and many applicants have existing connections to Australia.

Ms Ilyenko, for example is on a tourist visa.

This means she's not allowed to work, and her son can't go to school permanently.

She now hopes the government will be lenient enough to let her start a life here, at least for the time being.

An MSNBC article was mocked mercilessly for asserting that physical fitness was the latest marker to identify someone as a possible white supremacist.

The article by opinion columnist Cynthia Miller-Idriss pronounced that the "latest scheme" from white supremacists was to "valorize violence and hypermasculinity" on social media.

Miller-Idriss cites a study claiming that white supremacists are recruiting new members by promoting fitness and "positive physical changes" before propagandizing them with white supremacist messaging.

It took four sentences before the column identified physical fitness with Hitler and the Nazis.

Physical fitness has always been central to the far right. In "Mein Kampf," Hitler fixated on boxing and jujitsu, believing they could help him create an army of millions whose aggressive spirit and impeccably trained bodies, combined with "fanatical love of the fatherland," would do more for the German nation than any "mediocre" tactical weapons training.

Miller-Idriss goes on to cite several examples of white supremacist groups using mixed martial arts clubs to recruit members before concluding that opponents of racism need to understand their methods of recruitment.

Critics of the progressive cable news network wasted little time in ridiculing and mocking the attempt to identify fitness with racism.

"I saw my neighbour out for a jog. Should I report him, or wait till it escalates to push-ups?" read one popular response.

"Ok Guys now you've done it. Now you've literally politicized something which should have been left alone. Good job guys you morons," replied seven-time Mr. Olympia winner Phil Heath.

"Wtf, i did 10 pushups and now there's a swastika tattoo on my shoulder," joked another user.

"There's definitely something to this in my opinion. The other day I took a brisk hike at my local nature preserve and before I knew it I had invaded Poland," read another humorous tweet.

The Prime Minister has again rejected claims he made racist comments during a 2007 preselection battle for his NSW lower house seat of Cook.

The Prime Minister continued to deny the claims on Saturday, replying "no" three times when asked by reporters if he made the comments.

Federal Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese said while he wouldn't comment on the allegations, they showed Mr Morrison's character.

"I am not a member and wasn't involved in the Cook Liberal Party pre-selection," Mr Albanese told reporters on Saturday.

"But I do know this – the Prime Minister only received eight votes out of all the votes that were cast in that preselection ballot.

"When people had a look at where he was at, they judged that the other candidates would be better to represent their local community."
