Astronaut then tries to jump up higher to put more weight on the bungee cord, to be able to drop lower and pick up the hammer used to erect the usa flag on the moon.

I'll say it again, that these huge rocket engines are there simply to escape earth's GRAVITY! That mysterious force that shapes every star or planet into a sphere or near spherical shape depending on the effect of other bodies on it. These engines no matter how large must carry an even larger rocket and payload just to get into "space". So what is left in the form of a spacecraft and propulsion system? Not very much!
