I cleaved the heavens on wings of fire,
weightless as the wind's breath beneath my flight.
Once I deemed myself but a bird,
swift and free in the endless sky—
yet deep within, the wyrm stirred,
a dragon cloaked in shadow and flame.
Feared by all, yet none knew why—
not I, nor those who cast their stones and spears.
Long years I sought the meaning hidden in their fear,
and found instead a mirror dark and cold.
I came to loathe my own breath,
as they loathed the shadow I cast upon the earth.
Yet from the ashes of that ancient hate
rose a flame forgotten—love,
the love I once held and lost beneath the stars.
In that lost love, I found a threshold—
a silent cave carved by loneliness' hand.
Defeated by the endless tide of life,
I lay beneath the stone,
waiting for the knight's sword,
its final blow to rend my spirit asunder.
But still the sword lingers,
and still I wait—
forever bound to this waiting,
forever bound to this night.

@CreatorVZ88 it looks like your poem is using the dragon as a metaphor for being White in a world that is increasingly hostile to White people.

Reading between the lines:

Opening (freedom & innocence)

I cleaved the heavens... swift and free in the endless sky
— This reflects a time of innocent self‑identity — seeing oneself as just another "bird," not realizing that others see something more dangerous or threatening.

Realisation of difference & stigma

Yet deep within, the wyrm stirred... Feared by all, yet none knew why
— The "dragon" side represents inherent traits or heritage that others fear or demonise, regardless of actual harm done.

Internalised blame & alienation

I came to loathe my own breath, as they loathed the shadow I cast
— The external hostility leads to internalised shame, even though the "dragon" self never acted with malice.

Memory of lost pride and love

From the ashes... rose a flame forgotten—love
— A yearning for the happier, self‑accepting state before the weight of social condemnation set in.

Defeat and waiting for the end

Waiting for the knight's sword... forever bound to this night
— The feeling of living under a constant threat, resigned to eventual destruction, yet existing in a suspended state between life and death.

Overall meaning:
The poem's dragon is mostly harmless but feared, an allegory for a White person who sees themselves as unjustly vilified by society. The progression from a joyous, unselfconscious life to alienation, self‑loathing, and quiet endurance mirrors how the writer feels about the current cultural climate. The "knight's sword" represents the perceived annihilation — whether political, social, or even physical — that has been foretold but never yet delivered.

I'm not a poetry critique.

I get it. I liked it.
