The new movie The Woman King has been the subject of all sorts of controversy in the last few weeks. On this video I'll tell you about what's going on and most importantly I'll give you a historical channel's perspective on the historicity of this movie.

Some interesting facts about Africa that were not mentioned in the movie:

The Africans only became civilized because of contact with the empires of Asia and Europe.

The artifacts of their civilization were influences from their conquerors and slavers such as the Muslims, Chinese, Portuguese, and Spanish.

They only learned how to make straw, wood, mud, sandstone and stone buildings, refine ore, smelt metal, refine oil, and weave clothes using looms because of knowledge gained from their conquerors.

They only had gunpowder and guns because they purchased them from these foreign empires by selling slaves.

The Oyo soldiers and officers such as General Oba Ade who were wearing uniforms that resembled what was worn by Muslim Imperial Soldiers, who were Arabs, were stand-ins for the soldiers of the Islamic Caliphate and did not participate in the Atlantic Ocean Slave Trade because they had no contact with the Portuguese and Spanish, especially after the Reconquista where the 2 groups of Whites drove the Muslims out of the Iberian Peninsula to grant themselves independence, form their own empires, which were Catholic, and sever contact with the Islamic Caliphate.

The Muslims conquered Saharan Africa when Muhammad founded the Islamic Caliphate in 636 and they also enslaved the Africans upon occupying the Sahara region, sending the slaves to the east coast of Africa, where they were loaded onto ships and sent to various regions of their empire such as the Iberian Peninsula, Egypt, Arabia, Persia, Byzantium, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Mindanao, Palawan, and Coron. This was known as the Indian Ocean Slave Trade since the slaves were sent on ships that crossed the Indian Ocean, though the ships bound for the Iberian Peninsula, called Cordoba by the Muslims, crossed the Mediterranean Sea, and this predated the Atlantic Ocean Slave Trade in the west coast of Africa started by the Portuguese and Spanish in the 1400s. In total, the Muslims enslaved 17,000,000 Africans, much more than the 11,000,000 Africans enslaved by the Portuguese and Spanish.

The Chinese also participated in the Indian Ocean Slave Trade, bringing the Africans to their empire.

The expedition to map the Indian Ocean, led by Zheng He in 1405, ended in more Chinese slave ships landing on the east coast of Africa to capture more Africans for enslavement. The Chinese enslaved a total of 1,000,000 Africans.
