Maths - or Math as you Americans call it ...

Back in 67, Australia got rid of its British Imperial Pounds, Shillings & Pence system and swapped it for the Metric Dollar as used by the Good Ole Boys of the U.S.A. At the same time, Fahrenheit changed to Celsius and weights and measures changed from Ounces, Pounds and Stone to Grams and Kilograms, and Feet, Inches and Miles, to Centimetres, Metres and Kilometres. Sounds great doesn't it?

Being a 69er, I was born after the great change. By the time of my first memories in 72, people were still bitching that "Money doesn't sound real." The reason for that was that they were used to using money that was typically copper and older in style - from the 19th century in fact. When I was born, a Ha'p'ny/Half Penny with Queen Victoria on it was considered as ordinary change. School rulers were 30 Centimetres/12 Inches. Metre long rulers teachers hit us with were previously 90 Centimetres/1 Yard (a Yard Rule). I know Feet and Inches, and typical threads on bolts and screws is still either Metric or 1/4 Inch and so on ....

Why Do/Did We Learn the 12 Times Table in School?

12 pennies to the Schilling. 12 Schillings to the Pound (There were 240 pennies to a pound because originally 240 silver penny coins weighed 1 pound) ....

I'll let you Americans explain a Pint - that's 600 Millilitres. And while you're at it, explain Ounces, Pounds and Stone with the same old 12 times table. A Yard - 90 Centimetres or 3 Feet compared to a Mile?

And then I'll also let you Americans explain why an Imperial Pint is more than a US Pint (473 Millilitres) and an Imperial Gallon (4.5 Litres) is more than a US Gallon (3.8 Litres), and Americans and British didn't bother to sort that out way back when.

Temperature: The freezing point of water is 0^o Celsius. 40o Celsius is bloody hot! And 100^o Celsius is the boiling point of water. Both Fahrenheit and Celsius are EQUAL at 42^o Below Zero. So, in Fahrenheit, a 100 is hot, like on a normal summer's Texas or South Australian day? Get over it and boil some water for a cup of tea.

I could argue forever and a day that Metric is better. You Americans knew it when you dumped the British Pounds, Schillings and Pence. Even Britain agreed and went to Metric Money - but they kept a little Imperial this and that; was it just Miles, Feet and Inches or what? And you Americans and British could argue that your unique Imperial/US system was better. So, all I will say, instead of putting forth a valid debate, is that ...

Historical Note: If you know history, you can blame the French for everything. Or at least for British Imperial Money and Measurements, Metric everything, the Dollar, driving on the right wrong side of the road, and those silly sounding French words in the English language.
I know that English is at best a Pidgin European language - A mix of all. But let us pick on the French because FRENCH CREATORS have lapsed in their duty.
