Greek Prime Minister Alex Tsipras had already made it clear his government would not be paying the 1.6 billion euros repayment required to keep the bailout package and his 11th hour appeal for a stall on the default was seen more as an attempt to again convince his people Europe was at fault for the crisis.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel emphasised that no discussions about Greece could happen before this Sunday's referendum where Greek voters are to be asked yes or no to remaining in the Eurozone with the government urging its people to vote no.


"Before the planned referendum is carried out, we will not negotiate over anything new," she said on Wednesday.

The vote is being seen as yet another step by Greece to leave the European Union; Russia has already said it is ready to form an alliance with Greece and financially assist the nation.

The move is part of a broader official push in Russia that is seeing school curricula and textbooks reshaped to cut out alleged foreign influences and provide a Kremlin-backed narrative of history ... Both Keegan, who died in 2012, and Beevor are reputed military historians with a focus on World War II ... Beevor's award-winning bestsellers, particularly "Berlin: The Downfall 1945", have been criticised in Russia for focusing on atrocities committed by the advancing Red Army. Over the past 24 hours I have been receiving slightly ironic congratulations by email from fellow historians. They were prompted by the order from the Ministry of Education in the Yekaterinburg region of Russia to withdraw all my books from schools and colleges. They are to be removed "from the access of students and teaching staff". (It is interesting that teaching staff are not to be allowed to make up their own minds.) I am accused of "promoting stereotypes formed during the Third Reich" and developing the "propaganda myth" of Joseph Goebbels that Red Army soldiers committed mass rapes of German women. In some ways I am amazed that it has taken them so long.

SWEDEN — a nation that hasn't been in a fight for more than 200 years — has been issued a chilling warning by a top general: expect World War III "within a few years".


"The global situation we are experiencing and which is also made clear by the strategic decision leads to the conclusion that we could be at war within a few years," the statement reads. "For us in the army we have to, with all force we can muster, implement the political decisions."

Major General Anders Brännström made the stark statement in a brochure being distributed among attendees of an armed forces conference next week.

It's since sparked a storm of local controversy.

Is such a threat real? Is Europe strong enough to deter it?

Can Sweden defend itself?

General Brännström wrote that increasing tensions in the region had caused a shift in Sweden's military strategic thinking. No longer is it gearing towards assisting international policing operations. It's now focused on the "capability of armed battle against a qualified opponent".

Sweden's military was now optimising its armed forces for "a threshold effect against military attacks and ultimately defend Sweden", he said.
