Italian police have arrested 14 neo-fascists and placed 44 others under investigation. Security services moved after a plot came to light to assassinate politicians and attack police stations over the Christmas period.

Police say undercover officers infiltrated the banned Ordine Nuovo group two years ago and fed information back to the authorities. The neo-fascists also planned to blow up a tax collection office and attack the rail network.

Fausto Cardella the district attorney of I'Aquila believes the security forces have an established structure to combat such threats: "We have already a structure, that is the Anti-mafia National Prosecutor, the office has all the instruments and all the potential to carry out this kind of operation."

Reports in the country suggest the gang, at work in central and northern Italy, has been stockpiling arms over a period of time to "destabilise public order."
