A teenager has died and at least nine others are injured after a knifeman went on a stabbing spree in the French city of Lyon this afternoon

Sultan Marmed Niazi, armed with a kitchen knife and metal spit, carried out the attack outside the Laurent-Bonnevay metro station in the city's Villeurbanne region. 

The 33-year-old, who is thought to be an Afghan immigrant, lunged at innocent bystanders waiting at a bus stop outside the station in broad daylight.

Of those injured three are believed to have been seriously wounded, while six suffered minor injuries.

The one fatality was a 19-year-old man waiting on a bus to a music festival on the outskirts of Lyon.

Initial reports from local officials suggested police were looking for a second man, but a police source and the prosecutor's office subsequently said Niazi acted alone.

Niazi, who was videoed dropping his knife after the bloodbath, has offered 'three conflicting reasons' for what happened, but none are related to terrorist groups.

Disturbing videos posted on social media showed Niazi being arrested, and some of his victims.

A police source said: 'He targeted a 19-year-old man, who died at the scene, while nine others were also hurt, three very seriously.

'It seemed to be entirely random. The arrested man had been seen lashing out with at least one blade, and possibly two.

'As the attack intensified he was jumped by four bus conductors who managed to get the kitchen knife off him. There were around 30 people at the scene

The kitchen knife and the sharp spit - used for roasting meat - were found at the scene by detectives.

The arrested man was not carrying an identity card, or any other documents, but he has said he is from Afghanistan.

The dead victim was a local man who was trying to catch a bus to the Woodstower Musical Festival, near Lyon.

Several of the city's metro lines were shut down in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

There have been a number of terrorist attacks involving kitchen knives in France since 2015 - most of them carried out by supporters of Islamic State or Al Qaeda.

A 24-year-old suspect who had been caught on CCTV and wearing a balaclava while pushing a bicycle was later arrested and then charged with 'attempted terrorist murder'.

Mohamed Medjoub, who is of Algerian origin, told investigators he had pledged allegiance 'in my heart of hearts' to Islamic State.

His device contained traces of APEX, the compound used in the terrorist attacks on Paris on November 13 2015, when 130 people were killed by Islamic State operatives using Kalashnikovs and bombs.

RAID special forces police were involved in today's on-going incident in Lyon, but France's National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office has not yet declared it a terrorist incident

An Italian soldier was stabbed in the throat with scissors by a man who shouted 'Allahu Akbar' as he was arrested, it was reported on Tuesday

The unprovoked attack, which took place on the busy Piazza Duca d'Aosta in Milan, happened shortly after 10:45am this morning, Milano Today said.

A 23-year-old man reportedly stabbed the soldier in the neck and shoulder with a pair of scissors before fleeing towards Via Vittor Pisani.

He was soon apprehended by paramilitary Carabinieri police officers, and was said to have shouted 'Allahu Akbar' - which translates to 'God is great - as he was arrested, the publication reported

The same man had been reported to police on Monday after allegedly trying to attack people in the station with a pen, reports said.

The solider was taken to Fatebenefratelli Hospital where he was treated for a 'deep' stab wound to the neck and non-life-threatening injuries

The 34-year-old, who belongs to the Fifth Alpine Regiment of the Julia Brigade, was conscious when he arrived at the hospital, the report confirmed.

An investigation has now reportedly been launched to determine whether or not the attacker had 'links to terrorism

'The subject was promptly immobilized by the soldiers thanks to the techniques acquired during military combat training,' the Italian army told the DW.

It comes after two army officers and a police officer were stabbed inside the Italian train station in May 2017, The Local reported.

The attack took place as the authorities stopped a 20-year-old man, known for drug dealing, for a routine check.

When he was asked for his documents, the man pulled out a knife and attacked the officers, who suffered injuries to the collarbone, arm and neck, the report said

We learned that despite the best efforts of German cartoonists, some refugees are still having a hard time understanding how to behave at public pools.

European authorities, increasingly desperate to salvage the "yes we can" refugee narrative in the face of mounting evidence that it may be well nigh impossible to integrate two vastly divergent cultures, have scrambled to put together integration guides and design brochures and pamphlets aimed at "explaining" Western European societal norms to the millions of asylum seekers that now call the bloc home.

Most of the integration guides make some reference to the fact that in polite culture, it's not appropriate to grope women even if they appear, by Mid-East standards anyway, to be scantily clad. On New Year's Eve, women reported being sexual assaulted by dozens of "Arab" men in Germany, Finland, and Austria among other countries and since then, officials have focused increasingly on what certainly appears to be a kind of "groping" epidemic perpetrated by asylum seekers.

But it's not just the "groping." If Bild is to be believed, some refugees recently engaged in what one might call some "shenanigans" at the Johannisbad baths in Zwickau. Here are the rather disconcerting details from a clumsy (yet exceedingly amusing) Google translation of the original German:

Needless to say, that won't do anything to calm Europeans' frayed nerves.

Far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders even went so far as to suggest that the "Islamic testosterone bombs" be "locked up" in asylum centers for the sake of "the women."

On Monday, we get the latest bit of migrant news out of Europe, this time from Sweden where "gangs" of Moroccan migrant children have apparently "taken over" the Stockholm train station where, to let The Daily Mail tell it, they are "stealing, groping" and beating women. Here's the story:

Hundreds of Greek villagers have been taking to the streets in anger over the asylum-seekers they claim want to 'Islamize the western world'. 

The coastal area of Makrygialos is one of many areas in mainland Greece where the government is locked in a tug of war with local communities over the housing of migrants.

Just months after the new conservative administration took over promising to get tough on migration, deadlock is rapidly emerging over where to accommodate tens of thousands of asylum-seekers currently languishing in overcrowded, unsanitary camps on five islands facing Turkey.

Another speaker claims that 'refugees steal children' and that 'most people coming to Greece have criminal records and are hunted in their home countries.'

Other residents in the village of 1,000 say that the crime rate will increase in the village, which mainly lives on tourism.

'This is a tourist area. Which tourist would want to vacation next to a (migrant shelter)?,' asks local mayor Anastasios Manolas, a former career army officer.

Similar protests have taken place in other parts of northern Greece in recent months, with locals banding together to keep out buses bearing asylum-seekers from the islands.

Last week, parents in a kindergarten in the village of Vrasna refused to share the building with a small number of refugee children, who were forced to seek schooling elsewhere.

Meanwhile, critics note that the conservatives only have themselves to blame by repeatedly describing asylum-seekers in negative terms. In November, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said refugees and economic migrants are 'besieging' Europe.

The new conservative government which came to power in July has announced that the island camps on Lesbos, Samos and Chios are to shut down this year.

They are to be replaced with new, smaller facilities that are to be operational by mid-2020.

But the islanders say they will only accept small facilities where asylum-seekers are to be screened, and then either moved to the mainland, or sent back to Turkey outright.

The ongoing deadlock, five years after the height of the migration crisis, has caused exasperation among both island residents and asylum-seekers in the camps, where violence is rife.

After extended talks with officials on the islands led nowhere, the government last week caused further anger by announcing that land could be requisitioned for a three-year period to build the new facilities.

The islanders responded by taking their protest to Athens on Friday. On Monday, Mitarachi said the government would give island officials a week to suggest alternative locations for the new camps.

A man wielding a knife attacked residents venturing out to shop in a town under lockdown south of the French city of Lyon on Saturday, killing two people and wounding others, prosecutors said.

The anti-terrorism prosecutor's office told The Associated Press the attack took place at 11am in a commercial street in Romans-sur-Isere. The alleged attacker was arrested by police nearby shortly after the attack. Prosecutors did not identify him. They said he had no documents but claimed to be Sudanese and to have been born in 1987

Media reported that the knifeman first attacked a Romanian resident who had just left his home for his daily walk - slitting his throat in front of his girlfriend and son.

Following that, they reported, the assailant entered a tobacco shop, stabbed the tobacconist and two customers, and then went into the local butcher's shop. He grabbed another knife and attacked a client with the blunt end before entering a supermarket.

Some shoppers took refuge in a nearby bakery.

There have been a number of knife attacks in France in recent months. In January, French police shot and injured a man in Metz who was waving a knife and shouting "Allahu akbar."
