Extract: SYRIAN refugee who had been denied asylum in Germany a year ago died when a bomb he was carrying exploded outside a bar in Ansbach, Germany.

Twelve people were wounded in the attack, three of them seriously.

The 27-year-old, who arrived in Germany two years ago, was denied asylum last year but was allowed to remain in Germany because of the ongoing conflict in Syria, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said.

The suspect, who was carrying a backpack, had been targeting a nearby pop music festival, but was denied entry.

Some 2,500 people were evacuated from the concert after the explosion, which was initially said to have been a possible gas explosion, went off around 10:00pm local time.

A dozen people were wounded in the explosion, three of them seriously, added a spokeswoman, without giving any more details.



The man's request for asylum was reportedly rejected a year ago, but he was allowed to remain in the country, according to the Associated Press.

The explosion happened just after 10pm (6am AEST) outside Eugens Weinstube café, about 45km south of Nuremberg.

Extract: Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said the bomb – which appears to have been packed with nails and screws – could have killed and injured many more.

Asked whether the bomber might have links to ISIS, Herrmann said that couldn't be ruled out – though there is no concrete evidence for this yet.

"The obvious intention to kill more people indicates an Islamist connection," he added.



"A video made by the assailant was found on his mobile phone in which he threatened an attack," Bavarian state interior minister Joachim Herrmann told reporters.

"After that he announced in the name of Allah that he pledged allegiance to (IS chief) Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the well-known Islamist leader, and announced an act of revenge against Germans because they were standing in the way of Islam."
