One of Australia's most successful entrepreneurs blames immigration policies for the nation's economic woes

Matt Barrie, the founder and CEO of Freelancer.com, told Daily Mail Australia that the 'unhinged, uncontrolled mass immigration program' is setting off a domino effect on the rest of the country which will only end in 'an economic disaster.

An average of 2,000 people were welcomed to Australia every day during September, adding to the more than 500,000 who arrived last year.

While the Albanese Government announced a decrease in immigration levels in June, Mr Barrie said it still hasn't addressed the issue of housing supply.

The increase in demand without supply has forced rental, housing and commercial property markets to skyrocket to record-high levels.

'It is completely and utterly out of control, the cost of housing increases the cost of rent, which increases the cost of rent for businesses,' he said.

'That's adding a major input cost to everything and squeezing money out of Aussies and their businesses.

'This is not a functional society anymore!

The businessman said that prices would become affordable if the Albanese Government closed the borders instead of continuing to supercharge demand.

'It is mathematically impossible for wages now to pay for houses in many locations, particularly Sydney, parts of Melbourne and even in regional areas,' he said.

'It takes 46 years to save for a house deposit in Sydney, probably closer to 50.

'A house in Woollahra (eastern Sydney) just went for $18million, you could buy a 2024-model yacht for that.'

Increased rental costs have also forced essential workers such as paramedics, police officers and teachers away from their place of work, Mr Barrie said.

He believes the Reserve Bank of Australia is 'beholden' to keeping interest rates lower than other countries and maintaining the strength of the housing market.

'The RBA should have raised rates significantly higher than they have,' Mr Barrie said.

'But they know if they continue to raise rates it is going to potentially cause default correlation in the housing market.


While keeping the market from crashing, not pushing the issue on interest rates also means inflation could continue to grow and effect all Aussies, Mr Barrie said.

He nicknamed the government's boldness against the inflation rush to 'project Zimbabwe', where hyperinflation halved the African country's currency value every day at its peak in 2008.

While Aussies may be feeling the pinch now, Mr Barrie believes the economy is on a path to collapse without diversified industries.

'We used to produce cars, we had a manufacturing industry in the '80s,' he said.

'All we do now is trade fine houses like paintings


He said that the major banks 'don't do anything other than lend mortgages' and would cave in under the weight if the market was to falter.

'If you look at every market in the world where you've had a property bubble, eventually what happens is you have inability for people to pay the mortgage,' Mr Barrie said.

'During the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) you had American interest rates suddenly adjusted from three per cent to about eight. We're almost there right now.

'There's about $350billion worth of mortgages written during the covid pandemic at an interest rate of about two per cent.

'People went crazy gorging themselves on large homes that they can not afford in a normal interest rate environment.

'Now banks want to offer 50-year mortgages and kick the can even further down the road.'

Mr Barrie added that it was ludicrous for Australia to be struggling economically given the natural resources, relatively small population and density.

'We have the same amount of coal and double the amount of uranium as Saudi Arabia yet our energy price is out of control,' he said.

'We can't talk about nuclear plants because will affect the renewable energy projects.

'We're far better off focusing on nuclear and doing more conventional forms of energy generation, but we have blown energy prices to the sky.

'We should be the richest country in the world per capita, but we've completely p***ed it up the wall.

A top economist has urged the government to 'drop the charade and acknowledge that international education is an immigration racket', as he outlines the simple steps to slash the number of foreign students.


Macrobusiness chief economist Leith van Onselen pointed out that Indian nationals have led the surge in Australian temporary migration in recent years, with over 300,000 holding temporary visas in September last year - the largest of any foreign nation.

While that same figure dropped to 282,000 in November, it still represents a 52 per cent increase on 2019 levels.

Within that number, there are 105,000 on student visas and 75,000 on graduate visas - all of whom exacerbate Australia's deepening housing and rental crisis.

Mr van Onselen argued that for the majority of these students, 'Australian residency is the goal'.

This is supported by a recent India Today article which stated that prospective Indian students are more attracted by the pathway to residency than by the quality of study on offer in Australia.

'Indian students now give preference to nations with more straightforward job and permanent residency requirements,' Gaurav Batra, Founder and CEO of Infinite Group, told the publication.

And a vast number of these students use places at university as a backdoor to the jobs market through a loophole that allows them to abandon their courses at proper universities to enrol instead a cheaper private colleges.

Many of these 'colleges' are merely shopfronts to allow students to work and are known as 'ghost colleges' and 'visa factories'.

For example, one university said almost half of its 1200 Indian students did not show up or moved educational institution in 2023, reported the AFR. 

Mr van Onselen called on the Albanese government to tackle this problem by focussing on a drastically 'smaller pool of excellent (genuine) students'.

He called on policymakers to bring in tough English-language entry exams, reduce the number of hours students were allowed to work and to allow 'only top-of-class graduates to receive graduate visas'.

The economist also called for the introduction of a levy on international students for universities so that 'Australians receive a financial return from the trade.

'Universities should also be required to provide on-campus housing for international students in proportion to the number of enrolments to reduce pressure on the private rental market,' Mr van Onselen wrote.

'Sadly, our governments have chosen quantity over quality and trashed entry and teaching standards.'

There were almost 850,000 people of Indian birth living in Australia as of June 2023 - more than double the number recorded a decade earlier. 

Those born in India (846,000) made up the second largest group, with the population for 2023 surpassing the previous peak of 754,000 in 2022.

Following the United Kingdom, the Indian-born population is now second-largest migrant community in Down Under.

Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed a migration pact in 2023, which allows Indian graduates from Australian universities who are on a student visa to work and advance professionally for up to eight years without needing visa sponsorship.

Meanwhile, a program known as MATES is aimed at making it easier for young professionals and graduates from India to work in Australia in specialised areas where their skills are in demand.

The program will give Indian university graduates and early career professionals the opportunity to live and work in Australia for up to two years, with 3,000 places available. 

Alongside their attempt to focus on more skilled workers, the Labor government tried to bring in an international student visa cap by reducing new enrolments to to 270,000 in 2025.

However, it was rejected by the Coalition who argued it did not go far enough and also by the Green, who claimed foreign students were not to blame for the housing crisis.

Instead, the Labor government has attempted to suppress international student numbers by mandating a 'go slow' approach on visa applications.

Immigration officials have been told to process student student visa applications as a priority up until individual education providers reach a 'prioritisation threshold'.

This threshold is set by the government and amounts to 80 per cent of the cap they had tried to introduced.

Once this threshold is met, student visas will be processed at a slower level. 

The government has also has enhanced powers to suspend high-risk education providers from recruiting international students who intend to leverage their student visas to stay in the country as low-skilled workers.
