Sky News in a Mess Over Interviewing White Nationalist

Sky news Australia has admitted it was "wrong" to air an interview with far-right nationalist Blair Cottrell and has scrubbed the footage from its platforms.

The interview conducted on Sunday evening by Sky host and former Northern Territory Country Liberal Party chief minister Adam Giles sparked outrage cross social media.

It was also criticised by two high profile Sky hosts, David Speers and Laura Jayes.

"It was wrong to have Blair Cottrell on Sky News Australia," SkyNews news director Greg Byrnes tweeted late Sunday night after the interview when to air after 6pm.

During the interview, the former United Patriots Front leader called for immigration cutbacks and warned against "foreign ideologies" in Australian society.

Mr Cottrell, a self-employed Melbourne builder, also said he believed Australians lacked national pride.

Mr Cottrell was convicted in 2017 of inciting contempt and ridicule of Muslims. He also has convictions for other matters, including arson.
He is due to appear in the High Court later this year to fight the 2017 conviction and has sought public help to finance his case

Federal Labor MP Tim Watts questioned why Mr Cottrell was described by Sky as an "activist", tweeting: "Why is a man who has said he wants to see a portrait of Adolf Hitler hung in Australian classrooms and for copies of Mein Kampf to be 'issued annually' to students being given a platform?

Race Discrimination Commissioner Tim Soutphommasane said the interview was a "shameful low".

"We've come not to expect much from the nocturnal programming at @SkyNewsAust -- but featuring a neo-Nazi with a history of crime and violence is a shameful low. It also highlights how extremists are being dangerously accommodated by sections of the Australian media," he tweeted

Perhaps this Cottrell man talks about real issues and actually wakes people up? Now they are remorseful for entertaining this sort of person who might want to make a difference?

The Queensland government has agreed to pay a $30m settlement and deliver a formal apology to the people of Palm Island, after the federal court found police officers breached the Racial Discrimination Act and acted unlawfully in responding to riots over a death in custody in 2004.

The settlement, which is subject to approval by the federal court, resolves a class action involving hundreds of claimants, lead by Lex, Cecilia and Agnes Wotton.

"The parties have agreed on a $30m settlement for 447 claimants, including interest, applicants' legal costs and administrative costs, and the delivery of an apology," said the Queensland attorney general and minister for justice, Yvette D'Ath.

Assuming the court approves the settlement, I know that all parties involved in this settlement hope it will provide some measure of closure and a way forward for the community of Palm Island."

Queensland's deputy premier and minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander partnerships, Jackie Trad, said the government would seek to work with the Palm Island community on a "fitting way" to recognise the apology.

"I know that for many Palm Islanders this was an incredibly difficult time in their history. I look forward to continuing to work closely with the community as we move forward together," she said.

The 2004 riots were sparked by the death in custody of Mulrunji Doomadgee, from extensive internal injuries, including a ruptured liver.

Lex Wotton was jailed for inciting the riots on Palm Island, during which the home of the arresting officer, Chris Hurley, and the police station were torched. The riots began after a coroner ruled Doomadgee's death was an accident. It was later revealed a senior officer had given inaccurate information and failed to give relevant information to the coroner

Wotton finished his post-sentence parole period, which restricted him from speaking publicly, in August 2014. He launched the legal action in 2015.

In 2016 he told Guardian Australia there were two sides to the story and the public had favoured one.

"We don't say the police are all bad, but it was portrayed in that way in the sense of the Indigenous community uprising," Wotton said.

"It made us out to be not law-abiding citizens and that the police were in the right to do what they did. It took this particular case to turn things around in some sense, I suppose."

Doomadgee had been arrested for public nuisance and locked in a police cell on Palm Island in November 2004.

Hurley initially claimed Doomadgee had tripped, but was charged with manslaughter over the death. He was acquitted in 2007

Slap in the face'

Queensland Police Union (QPU) president Ian Leavers said the State Government's decision to settle was a "slap in the face" to officers working in Indigenous communities and did not make sense to him.

"They're awarding $30 million to some people who are convicted criminals who will now get a cash windfall," Mr Leavers said.

"[Police] are not racist — they're doing a job in very difficult circumstances in areas where most Australians would not comprehend what it's like to work and live in those environments.

"They are the ones who are owed an apology."

Queensland Civil Liberties Council vice-president Terry O'Gorman said Mr Leavers' comments were an "extraordinary" attack on the State Government, when they were simply obeying a court order.

"The fact is this is no 'act of grace' payment — it's the State Government doing what Mr Leavers should do and that is respect a court judgement," he said.

Mr O'Gorman said the QPS and the Queensland Government could have appealed the judgement but chose not to.

"Mr Leavers' comments on this are inflammatory and do nothing to improve race relations on Palm Island," he said.

"The police union has learnt nothing from the damning findings of the Federal Court and continues year in and year out to defend indefensible actions of certain police officers."

Mr O'Gorman said it is "ludicrous" for Mr Leavers to say officers on the ground need an apology.

"It just shows how reactionary, how out of touch and how Neanderthal the police union have become," he said.
