aborigine(n.)

A "person, animal, or plant that has been in a country or region from earliest times," 1858, mistaken singular of aborigines (1540s; aboriginal is considered the correct singular in English), from Latin aborigines "the first inhabitants," especially of Latium, hence "the first ancestors of the Romans." This is possibly a tribal name, or from or made to conform to the Latin phrase ab origine, which means literally "from the beginning."

This is from ab "off, away from" (see ab-) + ablative of origo "a rise, commencement, beginning, source; descent, lineage, birth," from stem of oriri "arise, rise; be born, be descended, receive life" (see origin).

It was extended by 1789 to natives of other countries which Europeans had colonized, especially "aboriginal inhabitant of Australia," with capital A-. The Australian English slang shortening Abo is attested from 1922 as a noun, by 1906 as an adjective.

Veteran journalist Peter Overton suffered an awkward gaffe during Channel Nine's election night coverage when he used the politically incorrect term 'Aborigine'

Overton was talking about legendary Australian politician Neville Bonner AO, who was the first Aboriginal Australian to become a member of the Parliament of Australia.

According to Reconciliation Australia, 'Aborigine' is perceived as offensive because it has racist connotations from the country's colonial past, promotes negative stereotypes and puts people with diverse backgrounds into a single group.

'Let's move on to the seat of Bonner now in Queensland,' Overton said during the broadcast.

'Of course, named after Neville Bonner, the first Aborigine to serve in the Australian parliament and a Liberal.

'If those votes (from the early count) hold up, it won't be Liberal for long.'

Overton paused for a split second in seeming recognition of the slip-up, but then Nine's coverage rolled on despite the hiccup.

Abos Demand Black Privilege

Sky News host discusses a "remarkably frank" address from Indigenous leader and former Labor Senator Pat Dodson.

"Earlier this week, in a remarkably frank address, the Indigenous leader and former Labor senator Pat Dodson has told the rest of us that Aboriginal people are owed more than just equality," Ms Credlin said.

"Practical reconciliation, he said, and taking steps to 'close the gap' in employment, education and health outcomes, are not enough, said Dodson, because that ignores the 'inherent and collective rights of the first peoples of Australia'.

"Just as we rejected two classes of citizens during the Voice debate, we must also reject this latest push from Pat Dodson."

YouTuber @WendallExplores visited Kalgoorlie, about 600km northeast of Perth, and recorded a 26-minute video titled Drunk In Australia's Roughest Outback Town.

In the footage, Wendall explored the regional city and interacted with several locals, including an Indigenous man called Jeff.

The video's description reads: 'Known as a wild place where miners risk it all to make their fortune in the goldfields of the area, it is also a place where the streets are unpredictable and wild.

The city has an Indigenous population of about 4,397 and 29,109 non-Indigenous residents.

Hiding the Truth

Glenn Wilson, who has been the mayor of Kalgoorlie since October 2023, criticised the depiction of the city.

'While the questions raised and the intent behind the video may have been well-meaning, the way the footage was captured and presented lacked cultural awareness,' he told Daily Mail Australia.

'When someone shares footage of First Nations community members, without the right cultural understanding or context, it can be counterproductive.

'It's not just about asking permission - it's about understanding the broader impacts and making sure that people are treated with respect and dignity.

'It can also reinforce negative perceptions rather than contributing to understanding.'

Wilson said content that is not 'balanced with local voices or cultural insight' can 'easily perpetuate harmful stereotypes'.

He added: 'While it's important to acknowledge challenges, it's equally important to recognise the resilience and strength of our community. Kalgoorlie-Boulder is a community that takes care of each other.'
