An Aboriginal woman's Welcome to Country at the 2024 NRL Grand Final has left fans divided - with some social media commentators attacking the elder's appearance

Indigenous elder Aunty Julie Jones and proud Dharug woman delivered the ceremony on Sunday evening as the Penrith Panthers took on the Melbourne Storm at Accor Stadium.

'I'd like to pay my respects to my ancestors an elders and extend that respect to everybody present here to night,' she said.

This is our traditional lands. Traditional country of our mothers, fathers, grandparents, and ancestors who have walked sung and danced this land since the beginning of our time here.

'Thank you for walking with us and strengthening the Spirit of country. On behalf of the Spirit of country.

'On behalf of the Wangal people and the wider Dharug community, thank you for bringing your hearts spirit and stories an embedding them here on this beautiful country we are so honoured to share with everyone who calls her home.

'Thank you. Welcome. Have an amazing night.'

The crowd gave the ceremony polite applause and there were many positive comments online.

'Well, that was one of the better Welcome to Countries I have heard,' a footy fan said.

'Beautiful Welcome to Country at the Grand Final,' added another. 'It was good was welcoming and fitting for the game and the crowd,' said a third.

But some other footy fans slammed the ceremony - and even attacked the Indigenous elder for her appearance.

'Here is Aboriginal Aunty Julie doing Welcome to Country at the NRL Grand Final. Pretty white for an Aboriginal. How much was she paid for this farce?' asked one fan.

'Blonde, white person giving a Welcome to Country. Joke's over can we move on from this?' questioned another

'Welcome to Country from the whitest person in the stadium,' another fan posted. Several more comments continued in this vein. 

Others hit back: 'Fancy people questioning people's cultural identity. Mixed bloodlines happen in all races

'Coffee and tea is still black - no matter how much milk you mix with .

Everybody is tired of the special treatment Abos and "box tickers" get. Still they have this silly speech to make us try believe they are a protected species?!

Kyle Sandilands has blasted a controversial Victoria Department of Justice and Community Safety plan to include 'white privilege training' in a new, taxpayer-funded cultural awareness course

'If you work for the for the Victorian Justice Department, thousands of people, you're forced to go and be shamed for being white.'

However, his co-host Jackie 'O' Henderson backed the move and said the course aims to make people aware of the challenges faced by other cultures

'I don't think it's being shamed ... I thought it was just making them aware of how other cultures don't have it as easy as what we do, which is the truth,' the 49-year-old said.

The term white privilege refers to advantages afforded to white people by systemic forms of racial injustice.

Addressing media at Victoria's Parliament House on Tuesday, Premier Jacinta Allan defended the move and noted the white privilege training module was voluntary.

'It's a bit rough to call out this one module, one training program, that's optional for those workers,' Ms Allan said.

'I don't think there's anything wrong with efforts being made to make workplaces safe and respectful for everyone.'

White Privilege basically means evolved, White people owe something to primitive Muds that breed what they can't feed and are too dumb and lazy to be anybody in a technological community!

Lidia Thorpe's outburst at Parliament during King Charles III's visit is just the latest in a long list of controversial stunts the independent senator has masterminded

She It managed to top her its list of stunts on Monday when she it aggressively interrupted King Charles' royal welcome at Parliament in front of stunned guests.

Shortly after His Majesty finished his speech praising Australia, Ms Thorpe launched into a foul-mouthed tirade by screaming 'f**k the colony' and 'you are not my king'.

'You committed genocide against our people,' she shouted, cloaked in a native fur coat.

'Give us our land back. Give us what you stole from us.

'Our bones, our skulls, our babies, our people. You destroyed our land.

'Give us our treaties. We want a treaty in this country. You are a genocidalist. This is not your land, this is not your land.'

Ms Thorpe then repeatedly shouted, 'not my king,' before she was ejected from the room by security.

She was formerly a member of the Greens before leaving the party and declaring herself an independent in February 2023 during her No campaign against an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

'Now I will be able to speak freely on all issues from a sovereign perspective without being constrained by portfolios and agreed party positions,' she said at the time.

'Greens MPs, members and supporters have told me they want to support the voice. This is at odds with the community of activists who are saying treaty before voice.'

In September 2022, shortly after taking her position in Senate, she faced harsh backlash after leading a protest that smeared the wrong coat of arms with fake blood during an anti-monarchy protest.

'The Crown has blood on their hands. Our people are still dying in this country every single day,' she said.

'The Crown's boot is on our neck and we're sick of it.'

She followed the stunt with more antics in 2023 - including getting into an infamous row outside a Melbourne strip club.

David Ross, the general manager of Maxine's Gentlemen's Club in north Melbourne, previously told Daily Mail Australia Ms Thorpe had been approaching 'white men' and 'telling them that they'd stolen her land' before the viral 3am spray.

The senator was filmed as she let loose on a group of men, telling one 'you've got a small penis' and another 'you're marked' in a menacing tone.

One of the men called her a 'racist dog' to which she responded 'f*** you' as a friend held her back.

Abos! Nothing but trouble! Particularly the hybrids! Still don't know they are colonised?! They want the land back? They couldn't organise a root in a brothel!

A council has spent more than $100,000 of ratepayer money on Welcome to Country ceremonies in the last two years

Brisbane City Council has shelled out $135,000 while other councils within Queensland have forked out tens of thousands of dollars.

The ratepayers have no say in the matter, though, as it's the councils they pay their fees to that have decided to spend big on the ceremonies.

The renewed attention on Welcome to Country ceremonies followed the recent AFL finals, in particular the Giants versus Lions semi-final in Sydney where Aboriginal Elder Brendan Kerin said they 'weren't to cater for white people'.

'It's a ceremony we've been doing for 250,000 years BC - and the BC stands for Before Cook,' he told the crowd, referring to Captain James Cook's arrival in Australia in 1770.

But the ceremony's modern form was invented less than 50 years ago by TV personality Ernie Dingo's dance troupe.

The Great Outdoors presenter and his fellow dancers came up with the impromptu routine in 1976 after an awkward stand-off with Maori and Cook Islanders who refused to perform at Perth Arts Festival until they were ceremonially welcomed.

Almost 50 years on, it has reached a point where a surf club was told it would have to pay $2,000 to an Aboriginal corporation for the rights to hold surf events and a fundraising swim at a public beach.

A spokeswoman said Brisbane City Council spent $84,711 on Welcome to Country ceremonies in 2023 and $50,490 so far this year, the Sunday Mail reported.

'Welcome to Country ceremonies are organised for events, including citizenship ceremonies, civic receptions, and cultural and Indigenous events, which make up around 25 per cent of civic events held in 2023 and 2024,' she said.

Rogue senator Lidia Thorpe has branded Australia a 'racist' country and shared a foul-mouthed message for King Charles after she was banned from Parliament

In typical attention-seeking fashion, Senator Thorpe disrupted proceedings in the Senate on Thursday morning - despite being handed a ban preventing her entering the chamber floor the night before.

To get around the ban, she screamed about 'genocide' through the open doors before chanting 'free free Palestine, from the river to the sea Palestine will be free' in the press gallery.

Speaking outside parliament after her latest stunt, Ms Thorpe took aim at Australia in general. 

'This is a very racist, divided country,' she told reporters.

'But that's not what we want, we want peace, we want liberation, we want self determination. We want to decide our own destinies, not this place with the native police.'

Ms Thorpe attacked 'native police' and deaths in custody before claiming there is 'no peace without justice'.

Rounding off her fiery speech, she took yet another ugly swing at King Charles.

We want our land back. We want our babies back, and we want the king to just f**** off,' she said.

The Indigenous senator made headline worldwide by claiming the monarch had 'committed genocide against our people' and urged him to 'give us what you stole from us - our bones, our skulls, our babies, our people'.

Her comments outside parliament came after she was banned from the Senate chamber on the final scheduled parliamentary sitting day of 2024.

On Wednesday, the rogue senator tore up documents regarding fellow independent senator Fatima Payman's parliamentary eligibility before tossing them at the One Nation leader Pauline Hanson and repeatedly branding her as a 'convicted racist'.

Senator Thorpe then appeared to flip her middle finger over her shoulder as she stormed out of the chamber.


The Senate on Wednesday night passed a motion to suspend Ms Thorpe for 'disorderly conduct' from the chamber until the end of Thursday.

Ms Thorpe had tabled a private members bill about genocide but was unable to debate it due to her ban.

Yet, she still turned up on Thursday morning to shout outside the open chamber doors.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong swivelled around in her seat as the speaker calmly requested security to 'shut the doors of the chamber, please'.

But Ms Thorpe then turned up in the press gallery where she shouted 'free free Palestine, from the river to the sea Palestine will be free' before leaving, according to the ABC.

The motion moved by Labor Senate leader Penny Wong was passed 46-11 in Ms Thorpe's absence on Wednesday evening.

'We all have a responsibility for our behaviour, whether in this place or contributing to public debate,' Senator Wong told the Senate.

'We are all elected to represent Australians and their interests.'

After leaving Parliament, Ms Thorpe raised her fist in the air while wearing a top that read 'Peaceful Palestinians'.

'It's no coincidence that this government chose today to suspend me from the Senate,' Ms Thorpe posted on X.

Ms Thorpe claimed her bill would strip the Attorney-General of his power to block the prosecution of Genocide and other atrocity crimes in Australian Courts.

'My Bill would help get political interference out of our legal system to give victims and survivors of these most heinous crimes a better chance at justice,' she said.

'It would also mean that our government can be held accountable for their own actions, both overseas and here.

'No politician should get to say who can and can't be held accountable in our legal system, particularly in relation to the most atrocious crimes like genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

'Whether you're a Palestinian Australian who has seen your family murdered in Gaza, or a Blak Mother wanting to hold this government to account for the ongoing removal of First Nations children, my bill would give people in this country a better chance for justice.'

Ms Thorpe's suspension came after a chaotic day in the Senate where One Nation leader Pauline Hanson tabled a document which claimed Labor defector Fatima Payman's Afghan citizenship disqualified her from serving in parliament.

Section 44c of the Australian constitution prevents anyone who holds citizenship of another country from sitting in parliament.

It sparked a vicious spray from Senator Payman, who accused the One Nation leader of racism and claiming she brings 'disgrace to the human race'.

'Senator Hanson has worn the burqa in this place. Maybe it's time she pack her burqa and go to Afghanistan and talk to the Taliban about this,' Senator Payman seethed.

All that Senator Hanson has done in this place is spread hatred, spread division.'

She also listed multiple previous comments made by Senator Hanson, including her first speech in which she said Australia was 'in danger of being swamped by Asians' and that 'Aboriginality would no longer exist' if her party were in power.

'If that is not racist, what is it?' Senator Payman yelled as she slammed her fist down on the table.

The drama unfolded in the last parliament sitting week for the year, as the Labor government scrambles to pass more than a dozen bills through the Senate, including a social media ban for under-16s.

Ms Thorpe today said she was tired of being treated like 'the naughty little black girl' in the Senate and claimed she would 'do it all again'.

'No-one tells me the rules around here until I break them, Ms Thorpe told the ABC.

'I think they make it up as they go along and that is part of the problem.

'We're the ones that are the naughty little black girl again and that's OK if you want to call me that and call me disruptive but I will not stand there, or sit there and be silent when people of colour are being attacked with racism.

It is violent. It hurts and you'll continue to get reactions. We have to lead by example, we have got to have this parliament at the Federal level say that racism is not allowed in this workplace.
