A Melbourne ~~man~~ muddy refugeewill face court accused of biting a police officer while attempting to escape a public housing tower in lockdown. Police will allege the 32-year-old was fleeing a Flemington social housing estate when the scuffle broke out. He's facing several charges including assaulting police and resisting arrest. At least 53 coronavirus cases are now linked to the housing estates. About 3,000 residents have spent their third night in isolation and are not allowed to leave their homes until Thursday, when mass COVID-19 testing is finished

Security firms allegedly charged for shifts that were never worked, they paid security guards in cash and made up names for staffers who never existed. There are also reports security guards slept with guests who were ordered to self-isolate inside their hotel rooms. More than 50 cases of coronavirus have so far been linked back to Melbourne's failed hotel quarantining. Hundreds of thousands of Victorians are waking up under strict lockdown this morning and risk being fined up to $11,000 or six months in jail if they break restrictions. Police will be patrolling the city, conducting random spot checks to ensure no one in declared hot-spots leaves their home unless it is for essential purposes

Protesters have threatened to disrupt peak hour traffic twice a day for six months if asylum seekers are moved from a waterfront hotel to Christmas Island

So far 400 people have signed a 'pledge to resist', vowing to cause commuter chaos in Brisbane to protest the transfer of 120 male asylum seekers who have been living in the Kangaroo Point Central Hotel in the city's south for the past seven years

Protests have been held outside the hotel since April.

The organisers said this time the protests will be more consistent and will occur up to twice a day for six months to ensure the refugees are not moved

'We wouldn't have to protest like this at all if the government just released these men into the community. These people have suffered enough already,' protest spokeswoman Dane de Leon told The Courier Mail.

The pledge has been signed by 400 people including greens Councillor Jonathan Sri, who was arrested at the another protest
'If it was safe for them to return home, the government would have deported them years ago, so the crucial question now is whether we want to grant them asylum and release them, or keep them locked up forever,' he said.

Those who signed the pledge agree to: 'safely risk arrest to cause as much traffic disruption as possible if the government transfers detainees to higher-security facilities instead of releasing them into the community

Catherine*, a resident in North Melbourne's Canning Street flats, told The New Daily there had been a growing mistrust of the government – including whether the testing was safe.

"Neighbours are saying if they're locking us in here for no valid reason and refusing family members to give us our culturally appropriate food, then why are they forcing us to eat their food?" Catherine said

"We can't trust what they're giving us. They created that fear in our head so now we're too scared to eat.

"Some people are thinking, what if they've injected stuff in the fruit and veggies?"

The sudden hard lockdown without warning meant residents didn't have a chance to buy fresh food and essential supplies like baby formula

Although some friends and family were initially allowed to deliver care packages, most are now being turned away to prevent food contamination.

The Department of Health and Human Services has been carrying out food deliveries, but some residents have complained of long delays and meagre meal sizes.

To lend a hand, food charities, community organisations and members of the community have conducted huge drop-offs of donations, but there is no guarantee all the residents are receiving them.

The food situation it is just one example of growing mistrust between people trapped in the public housing estates and government officials.

On Tuesday night, there was outrage among food donors after a 28-year-old man was arrested after he was allegedly aggressive toward police in front of a Flemington public housing tower.

It is believed the incident occurred during a food delivery by a local charity, which police said was not involved in the incident.

Catherine also told The New Daily that officials had even been offering to fast-track a special $750 grant payment if they agreed to be tested.

But some were wary of the motives.

"For us Africans, we're thinking, 'they haven't released a vaccine yet, maybe they want our DNA'.

"But some people, they say they don't want the money," Catherine said.

DHHS did not respond to direct questions about allegations residents were being offered money in return for a test.

"A one-off hardship payment will be made to every household," a spokeswoman said.

"For households where no one is currently in work, a $750 per household payment will be made and for households where one or more residents are working, a $1,500 per household payment will be made.
