A massive brawl has broken out in the centre of Alice Springs prompting a major police operation ahead of the final night of the town's curfew

Police have descended on central Alice Springs after a major brawl broke out in a prominent thoroughfare as the nighttime curfew could be extended.
The snap 72-hour lockdown announced on Monday was triggered after four off-duty police officers were ambushed by a group of 20 men over the weekend.

The Police Commissioner Michael Murphy quickly acted after laws were passed in May which gave the government the authority to enact an immediate curfew.
But while adults and children are prevented from entering Alice's town centre between 10pm and 6am, it has not stopped violence breaking out during the day.

The massive brawl on Wednesday erupted outside the Coles on Gregory Terrace and Bath Street with witnesses reporting "many weapons" in plain sight, according to the Action for Alice Facebook group.
About 50 people, both adults and teens assembled in the Coles carpark with multiple spot fires breaking out, SkyNews.com.au understands.

Footage has also emerged showing a heavy police presence descending on the area to quell the violence.

Multiple arrests were made while police have confirmed the situation is under control.

Two females aged 17 and 19, as well as three males aged 21, 26 and 42 were all arrested at the scene after multiple police units including Strike Force Viper, the Dog Operations Unit and members from the Southern Traffic Operation arrived on the scene.

However, locals have told SkyNews.com.au there was no visible police presence around the town centre when the brawl broke out

Alice Springs business owner and founder of Action for Alice, Darren Clark said while officers arrived "pretty quickly", there very few police vehicles around the scene during the day.

He explained, during the last snap curfew in March there were typically multiple groups of four officers patrolling the streets in the day.

Mr Clarke said the government had failed to adequately equip the town with appropriate resources this time around.

"The last few hours have been pretty unsteady," Mr Clark told SkyNews.com.au

"They've got to get more boots on the ground and have a really strong presence in the middle of the day."

As the curfew will come to an end at 6am on Thursday, the government is considering extending the measure for a further few days.

Police Minister Brent Potter said the decision would not be made until Thursday, according to the ABC.

The curfew has been welcomed by locals as an effective stop gap measure to quell the emerging crime crisis, according to Alice Springs Mayor Matt Paterson.

Mr Paterson said while the situation at night was not "perfect" there was an obvious and noticeable difference.

He also said after the last curfew ended there were knock-on effects which reenergised the town.

"It was actually a really nice place to live from the last curfew. It's actually made a dramatic impact," Mr Paterson told Sky News Australia on Tuesday.

"So, whatever they did 12 weeks ago has clearly worked, and we've just had a small hiccup.

"But people are frustrated and, you know, they don't celebrate the decision for a curfew, they welcome it because they want to be safe."

However the police response has not been met with universal praise, with the CEO of the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care (SNAICC), Catherine Middleton telling The Guardian there was "no evidence that snap curfews like this work".

Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney was asked on Tuesday if she supported the NT Police's decision, but she refused to respond, instead claiming long-term funding commitments were the "only" solution to growing crime.

Excerpt: Shocking footage has emerged of an elderly man being knocked to the ground by a teenage boy in broad daylight.

Police are now investigating the unprovoked attack which unfolded at Munno Para Shopping Centre in Adelaide's north on Thursday afternoon.

Footage showed the teen confronting the man aged in his 60s, calling him a 'fool' before landing a single punch, which knocked the victim to the ground.

'Get up dog,' the teen appeared to tell the man lying on the ground.

The man got to his feet and grabbed a nearby scooter as he tried to defend himself but was rammed with a shopping trolley  moments later.

The disturbing incident was allegedly filmed by a group of teens watching on who did nothing to help the man, according to Seven News.

No charges have yet been laid.

One witness said: 'It is disrespectful, but unfortunately that's just our society.'

Geraldton assault: German backpacker was attacked by gang of ABORIGINAL youths at a public toilet in Bluff Point, WA

A gang of youths remain on the run after a young German backpacker was bashed with a gardening tool in a late-night attack and attempted robbery in a beachside suburb.

The tourist, 24, was confronted by a group of up to five young males wearing face coverings at a toilet block in the Geraldton suburb of Bluff Point in Western Australia's mid-west at about 10.30pm on Monday night.

The man told police that the group demanded his clothing and jewellery and threatened to chop off his arm with a garden tool if he didn't oblige.

The tourist was assaulted and struck in the head with the gardening tool during the brief scuffle, the Geraldton Guardian reported.

The group eventually fled the scene empty-handed.

The youths remain on the run more than 24 hours later.

Police advise anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers to keep quiet because it's RACIST to hold sub-human filth accountable for their own actions.

The change in Territory government did nothing to stop rogue youths in Alice Springs leaving locals fearing for their lives, with dozens of vehicles smashed, businesses ransacked and Aboriginal Police Liaison Officers outnumbered when weapons were brandished during a dispute at a community footy game over the weekend.

Chief minister elect Lia Finocchiaro has vowed to tackle the issues of youth crime and 'reset the agenda' for law and order after meeting with the NT police commissioner on Sunday.

The Australian has obtained dozens of photographs and video footage of the weekend carnage in the red centre, where roaming youth vandals damaged more than 60 cars, with many of the vehicles dedicated to helping improve the lives of young Indigenous Australians.

One young woman, named Clarin, on Sunday evening had her car approached by a group of children – some whom look as young as eight – fearing she would be hijacked.

Extraordinary footage of the encounter shows the children approaching the vehicle from the Todd River at 8pm before the 28-year-old chef and student from Indonesia slowly reversed her car to get away, when the children started pelting rocks at her vehicle.

"The kids tried to approach the car and then (I) try to reverse the car and then the kids started to throw the stones on my car and I drove away," said Clarin, who was still shaken by the incident on Monday.

Clarin, who requested her surname be withheld, said that before her vehicle was attacked the children had tried following and throwing stones at the friend she had just dropped off.

"I was so panicked, she was panicked, my other friend panicked as well," she said.

"I was worried if they threatened me and asked me to leave the car and then they can hijack my car," she said.

At least eight businesses were attacked on Saturday night, with photos obtained by The Australian showing hundreds of vehicle and business windows smashed.

Over the past week Alice Springs has seen marauding youths break the windows of scores of vehicles, businesses, government and non-government agencies.

Some of the rock throwing has been at moving vehicles.

On Sunday evening video captured a terrified 28-year-old chef and student from Indonesia accelerating away from youths as the heavy thud of rocks hurled at her car was heard.

On Sunday afternoon violence spilled onto the streets after a football match with rival groups attacking each others with hatchets, axe handles, a baseball bat and sticks.

The recent incidents continued the dismal tide of criminality, which brief curfew periods had failed to curtail.
