Northern Territory Police have charged a 20-year-old man following an aggravated assault in Wadeye on Monday.


Police allege the man gave a 25-year-old woman head injuries and also assaulted a health clinic worker while the victim was being taken from the clinic. A vehicle was also damaged in the incident.


The man has been charged with multiple offences, including two counts each of aggravated assault and being armed with an offensive weapon, and one count of assaulting a worker.

He was remanded in police custody and will appear in Darwin Local Court today.

HEALTH staff (i.e. White people) in Wadeye could be removed from the community following the second assault of a nurse in seven days.

A man, 20, has been charged after he allegedly assaulted a woman, 25, causing a head injury and then assaulted a nurse who was taking the woman to the clinic by ambulance. Two nurses attended the call out in the early hours of Monday morning. The latest violent incident comes seven days after a nurse in the same community was allegedly punched and kicked repeatedly while on the ground during a house call.

Health Minister John Elferink told the NT News he wouldn't rule out closing the clinic. "We're going to be speaking to community leaders in next few days and unless I'm satisfied my staff ... are safe we are prepared to withdraw them," he said. "My concern is with the safety of my health staff and that is my primary motivator."

Mr Elferink said he wanted to send a clear message to individuals living in remote communities who abuse health staff. "Their selfishness threatens the health of everyone in remote communities and it's about time they bloody well wake up to themselves," he said.

TWO men have been charged for allegedly causing $3000 worth of damage to a Fannie Bay supermarket.

Fannie Bay IGA owner Manuel Kotis arrived at work on Tuesday morning to find metal plates ripped from the shop front and a broken window.

He said the thieves also smashed the alcohol cabinet and stole booze.

Police arrested two 25-year-olds later the same day after they were identified using CCTV footage.

The men were charged with two counts of unlawful entry, two counts of stealing, damage to property and receiving and possessing stolen property.

The men are due to appear in Darwin Local Court today.

RESIDENTS near Frog Hollow Park are suffering sleepless nights as long-grassers (LAZY, DRUNK BOONGS) congregate to the area for boozy and often violent nights out while family members book out nearby accommodation.


A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, lived next-door to Darwin CBD budget accommodation Frogshollow Backpackers, and has chased people off his property after suffering sleepless nights due to constant screaming, shouting and fighting.

"(I'm) struggling to sleep every night because of all of the people — long-grassers, friends and families of tenants drinking in the park just in front of my home every night until 4am or 5am in the morning," he said.

He said it got so bad, people would trespass on to his property. "I've had to call the police as they were sneaking into my backyard," he said. "I'm not talking about every now and then, it's every night, it's happening even right now."

Frogshollow Backpackers receptionist Kumu Acharya, who has worked there for two months, said the troublemakers were known to the hostel.


"Their family members used to stay in the hostel," Ms Acharya said. "Because they don't have any money they can't afford to stay at the hostel, so they stay at the park. We used to talk to them and close the door and if the situation got worse we'd call the police."
She said the revelry had quietened down recently, but was rampant four to five days ago. "For one week it was fighting," Ms Acharya said.

"They got drunk and then sleep on the roads, then fighting each other again. We had to call the Darwin police so many times." She said the hostel's residents preferred to party on the grounds rather than out in the park.

NT Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said police received a number of complaints from nearby residents in regard to the area, mostly in the early hours of the morning.

A DRUNK long-grasser who stripped naked and shook his penis around at a female police officer was six times over the limit, a court has heard.


Mashak Nabegeyo, 31, pleaded guilty in the Alice Springs Magistrate's Court to behaving in an­ ­indecent manner, furnishing a false name to police and aggravated assaults.

Police prosecutor Steve Haig said after the incident, which occurred at the Mindil Markets in June 2015, Nabegeyo was taken to the watch-house and returned a 0.315 per cent blood alcohol reading.

Officers took him to the Coconut Grove sobering up shelter after finding him yelling and scaring stallholders.

"Once he was about to exit the vehicle, he removed his clothing and exposed his penis to the female police officer – shaking it around," Mr Haig said.


Defence counsel Dev Bhutani said Nabegeyo has a "great deal of shame" talking about the incident.

THE men {sic} who stole a guide dog donation box from a Berrimah newsagent was stoned and looking for money to buy more drugs.


Gerald James Ryan pleaded guilty to the damaging property, stealing and unlawful entry in Darwin Local Court yesterday, following the theft on April 26.

Judge Michael Carey des-cribed Ryan as a "recidivist thief". "There comes a stage when you can't keep calling on your age and intoxication," he said.

The court heard Ryan and a mate had been drinking and smoking cannabis, but had run out of drugs. He stashed the guide dog box in scrub, 300m down a bush track.


Defence lawyer Rory Pettit said Ryan should be hit with a "short and sharp term of imprisonment". Mr Pettit said that Ryan had "relapsed" following a stint in rehab.

The court heard Ryan plans to leave Darwin, and move to Ti Tree once he is out of prison.
