VIOLENCE in a Territory town drove away a police officer whose wife feared for his safety after he was struck with a wine bottle as he tried to arrest a young man for breaking bail, a court has heard.


A gang of youths pelted the arresting cops with rocks before one man, Kelvin Williams, threw the empty bottle at Constable Joshua Tringrove, who was struggling on the ground with his cousin.

In sentencing, NT Supreme Court Acting Justice Dean Mildren said the offending had serious consequences despite the minor injuries.

"He has had flashbacks at night," he said. "He remembers the smile and the laugh on your face after you had thrown the bottle.


"His wife was concerned about his safety and I understand he has transferred to Tasmanian police as a result."

Constable Tringrove suffered an injured left arm, which he raised to shield his face from the bottle during the incident in Alice Springs last April. His quarry escaped.

Justice Mildren said Williams, an initiated Warlpiri man from Wave Hill community, had a long criminal history – albeit no previous violence offences – "for someone who is only 20". He was sentenced to 12 months' jail, backdated to his remand in November, and released with the balance ­suspended.

CHINESE New Year got off to an ugly start at Palmerston Shopping Centre at the weekend when colourful lion dancing was interrupted by a brawl.


The incident, caught on video, shows a woman viciously swinging a chair at a man after he decided to join in with the Chung Wah Society Lion Dancing troupe.

She then throws the chair at the man.

"Oi you motherf**ker!" the woman screams, while being held back by a dance troupe volunteer.

A SEXYLAND worker was allegedly threatened with a broken glass bottle, kidnapped and forced to perform oral sex before she jumped out of a moving car to escape her attacker, a jury has been told.


Brett Daniels is standing trial for the alleged attack in the NT Supreme Court.

Prosecutor Matthew Nathan SC said the woman's main concern was being reprimanded for wearing thongs to work when she started her shift on the afternoon of December 29, 2014.

"At the end of that shift she was abducted with a broken bottle thrust under her chin and forced to drive her car to Mindil Beach, where she was forced to put the accused's penis in her mouth," he said.

Daniels had earlier entered Sexyland, on the Stuart Highway, where he put some DVDs and a portable masturbation kit on the counter.

The alleged victim was working alone.
Daniels reportedly left "to have a cigarette" and didn't return, the jury heard.


The woman locked up the shop and walked out the door, where he allegedly ambushed her outside.

Mr Nathan said the victim tried to distract her assailant from sex by talking about getting him money after being forced to perform fellatio at Mindil Beach.


Daniels allegedly drove away from Mindil towards the Trailer Boat Club, when the "petrified" victim jumped.

Mr Nathan said the vehicle was doing 40-60kmh and Daniels kept driving.

He reportedly became trapped inside Sexyland after he returned and entered using the victim's key.

The jury heard he cut himself, leaving blood at the scene, on the way out after breaking an office window.

The trial continues.

A    BLACK-market Facebook page has sprung up in Darwin, encouraging people to rort the controversial Basics­Card system.


The page's founder, Tommy Tran, admitted he was encouraging behaviour which was "a bit fraudulent" but said the issue was with the welfare system, not his behaviour.

His actions have now att­racted the attention of the Commonwealth Government.

Mr Tran, unemployed for "a few months", said the Basics­Card was inconvenient for many welfare recipients, as "most" stores don't accept it.

"The BasicsCard system I actually agree with, but there aren't enough stores that acc­ept it. People are going hungry when they have money in their account," he said.

"I agree that (what I'm enc­ouraging) is a bit fraudulent in a way but something had to be done about the problem."
The page, called "Darwin NT – Basics Card Cash Swaps", suggested BasicsCard holders could purchase fuel or groceries for non-welfare recipients in return for a lesser amount of cash.

Mr Tran denied suggestions that trading BasicsCard credit for cash would result in vulnerable people buying alcohol and tobacco.


"It will stop people having to humbug," he said.


One individual, David Dwyer, said he would pay 75 cents cash for every dollar worth of goods a BasicsCard holder purchased for him.

Mr Tran described the 25 per cent markup as "cheap as f**k" and insisted trading BasicsCard credit was legal.

Department of Human Services general manager Hank Jongen said welfare recipients suspected of rorting the scheme could face even tougher methods of quarantining ­income.

"Unfortunately, there may be some people in the community who set out to misuse the BasicsCard, which could include swapping their allocated funds for cash," he said.

"If the department suspects or receives information about possible misuse, the department will investigate the matter and, if it finds a person has breached the BasicsCard terms and conditions, it may take ­action and cancel their Basics­Card."

The first iteration of the ­BasicsCard was as part of the 2007 Northern Territory Int­ervention. Variations of that scheme have been trialled since but have been criticised on a number of grounds, ­including that they are easy to defraud

A WOMAN escaped three men during a harrowing sex attack in a concrete drain in Palmerston early this morning.


Territory Duty Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said a man sleeping in a unit on Wright Crescent in Gray was woken up by the victim's screams at 2.30am.

The man then ran to a concrete drain behind the complex to help the woman and scared off her attackers.

Supt Jorgensen said the victim was shaken by her ordeal but the man's efforts prevented the attack from escalating.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police expect to interview the victim later today, but the three suspects were described as indigenous men.

ESCAPED killer Jeffrey Ahwon forgot he was eligible for parole 10 months ago.


Instead of walking out of the Darwin Correctional Centre with a stamp on his release forms, Mr Ahwon walked out when the guards weren't looking 15 days ago and has sparked a lengthy manhunt.

In addition taxpayers will now likely have to fork out an extra $130,000 for Ahwon to serve the remaining two years and seven months of his sentence. He also faces a maximum of three more years in prison for escaping custody.

Ahwon has not been seen since his escape despite a team of eight NT police investigators co-ordinating a round the clock manhunt for him.

Recapturing Ahwon, 20, remains a high priority for police who are still in contact with Ahwon's family and associates.

Ahwon was one of three teenagers who bashed 39-year-old Rick Dermody at Casuarina Square Shopping Centre in 2013.
