DRUNKEN neighbours put their lives at risk to extinguish a large fire at a vacant unit in suburban Darwin public housing. 
 
Police have been investigating the blaze at the now-destroyed third-storey unit at Hudson Fysh flats on Shiers St in The Narrows, which is being treated as suspicious. Nobody was injured.

Firies said the fire started in a wardrobe.

The man who lives next-door, Vincent Crowley, was on his computer when he heard commotion outside about 9.55pm on Monday.

"There was two or three people trying to break the door down to get in," the 56-year-old pensioner said.

"The smoke was starting to get blacker and thicker.

"People were saying they thought there was someone sitting on the other side of the door, which thankfully didn't turn out to be true."

Mr Crowley rang 000 while the men finally broke the door down.

Other residents grabbed nearby fire hoses and extinguishers from the stairwells.






"Some were starting to go inside which was stupid because some of them were drunk," Mr Crowley, a retired paramedic, said.

"One guy was pissed-as, but I'll give him is credit — he got all the fire extinguishers.

"These guys turned the hoses on him, which was good.

"He was worried he had a mate in there.

"Although he was drunk, he was pretty helpful."

Mr Crowley said the absent next-door neighbours were unknown to him, and he thought they had only recently moved in.

"I was trying to stop the people going inside," he said.

The father of Melbourne Demons player Dom Barry says he can no longer live at his Alice Springs home because of an ongoing neighbourhood dispute.
 






    Michael Barry, who has been fighting for months to keep his NT Housing home, said it had become "intolerable and fearful" for himself, his daughter and foster son Steven, who has Down syndrome.

He said his anger hit boiling point after his son Ben was allegedly bashed in the street on Wednesday last week, the day before they were meant to be out of their home.

"I don't want to live here," he said.

"Not any more, because of the fact that the neighbours have allowed my family, through their lack of owning up to the fact, that all these horrors have happened."

Mr Barry's involvement in last week's alleged assault led to him being charged with breaking bail conditions over a separate pending assault charge against him.

Mr Barry claimed police were alerted to the alleged assault against Ben, but said his complaints of harassment had been ignored.

He said he had been involved in an ongoing feud with people in his neighbourhood since September last year, and had recently gone to great lengths to protect his family.

Mr Barry said he had been forced to install security cameras, which he claimed were to provide police with evidence when required.

In the meantime, he will continue to fight for a new home while also fighting to avoid eviction in court.

"They can evict me out of this house but don't evict me all together (from the system)."







    NT Housing told Mr Barry late last year that he and his family had to move from their home of 20 years, citing multiple reasons.

From failing to take reasonable care of the premises to the house being too big for the family of three, Mr Barry said he had heard it all.

NT Housing offered the family a new three-bedroom home but Mr Barry said it was a "dump".

Dom Barry, who has played two games for the Demons in his debut year, has been kept out of the ongoing drama so far.

NORTHERN Territory police have expressed "regret" for failing to let the public know about a knife-wielding rapist on the lose in a Territory town for more than 24 hours, and promised to change its processes. 
 
The 58-year-old woman was approached by an unknown Aboriginal man on Middle Beach in Nhulunbuy about 9.20am on Tuesday.

Northern Investigation Section Detective Senior Sergeant David Richardson said: "The woman followed the man a short distance from the beach towards the sand dunes.

"Police allege the man threatened the woman with a knife and sexually assaulted her."

Police failed to release information to the public about the incident until 1pm on Wednesday, even after daily morning-and-night check-up rounds calls from the NT News.

And when police did ask for the public's help, they had enough help to put a 45-year-old man in cuffs within two hours in relation to the incident — proving the people want to work with police.

AN ALLEGED sex offender is on the loose after sexually assaulting a woman and leaving her "distressed and naked" on the corner of a main road in Nightcliff on Sunday morning. 
 
Acting Senior Sergeant Meghan Funnell said police were called to the scene on the corner of Dickward Drive and Craig Crescent, opposite Woolworths, where they found a highly distressed female about 2.10am.

"The victim was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment," Sen-Sgt Funnell said.

The woman was also reportedly taken to the Sexual Assault Referral Centre to be examined.

Police carried torches and scoured nearby bushland searching for the attacker in the early hours of Sunday but did not locate him.

Police said the alleged offender matches the description of a male who "inappropriately assaulted" a woman near Oleander Street, Nightcliff, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Duty Superintendent Craig Ryan said the attacker knocked the woman to the ground and grabbed her by the ankles before he was chased away by dogs.

The offender has been described by police as "an Aboriginal male, aged in his early 20s, approximately 165 to170 cm tall, of slim build with short, dark curly hair and wearing dirty white or dark shorts with no shirt and no shoes".

SIX female youths have been charged after allegedly stealing a Suzuki Swift which was then used in a series of offences. 
 
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said the youths - which included two 13-year-olds, two 16-year-olds, a 14 and 15-year-old - stole the vehicle from Wagaman early Tuesday morning.

"Police allege the youths were involved in a fuel drive off at a service station on Wishart Road and used the vehicle to ram a residential fence in Karama," Senior Sgt Bland said.

"Trident Detectives located the vehicle abandoned in Millner yesterday afternoon and arrested a 13 and 14-year-old.



"The four remaining youths were arrested a short time later at a residence in Alawa."

The youths were charged with a number of offences including:

● Aggravated unlawful use of a motor vehicle

● Drive motor vehicle while unlicensed

● Damage to property

● Stealing

● Breach of bail.

They will appear in Darwin Youth Justice Court on August 1.

A CRAZED woman ran naked and screaming in public in a desperate bid to get her drunk husband's attention just hours before he allegedly murdered her, witnesses have told a ­committal hearing. 
 
Conway Stevenson remains in custody over the death of his wife at Bagot community, in Ludmilla, last November. Witness Nelly Jones said she was sitting in a stationary minibus taxi outside some houses when Stevenson, looking for his wife, told one of the other women on board: "I'm going to murder her."

Ms Jones said she believed Stevenson's threat was "silly talk".

"I thought he wasn't going to do that, he was always a good boy," she said.

The court heard on the evening of November 26 – hours before she was killed – the victim stripped naked.

She was yelling "I want you Bagot mob to see me (like this)" and "where's f***ing Conway".

Witness Sabina Holmes said she believed the victim behaved in the "shameful" way to make Stevenson notice her.

Two women tried to calm her down, offering to help her get some clothes on and go to family at Minmarama community. She ignored them.

Ms Holmes said Stevenson told the victim, "I don't want you any more", but she ­followed him.

Witness Chris Herbert said he was drinking beer with other people on a footpath when Stevenson – "hungover" and upset – walked over.

Mr Herbert said the accused told him in Warlpiri: "I think she's dead".

"He told me to hit him," he said. He punched Stevenson, whom people had started to yell at.

The hearing continues.
