The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) crime figures show the Northern Territory still has the highest rate of assaults in Australia, and most are against Indigenous women by family members.
The statistics show the Territory's assault rate grew by 5 per cent last year and is more than three times higher than that of any other state or territory.
There are more than 3,000 victims of assault per 100,000 people every year in the Territory compared with 900 per 100,000 people in the next most violent jurisdiction, Western Australia.
Sixty per cent of assault victims were female and 80 per cent of those women were Indigenous.
The Territory also had the highest percentage of female victims who knew their assailant (90 per cent) and the highest percentage of women whose attacker was a member of their family (60 per cent).
Unlike other states, more women in the Territory were assaulted in a public place that at home.
The report shows that the Australian Capital Territory, South Australia and New South Wales posted a decrease in the number of assaults on the previous year, down 11, 7 and 3 per cent respectively.
Assaults in Western Australian were up by 7 per cent.
Assault data for Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania was not available in the report.

THREE men have been arrested after allegedly assaulting a security guard with glass bottles.
Watch Commander Siiri Tennosaar said the men, aged 34, 24 and 20 had allegedly lit a fire in Stuart Terrace, in the Alice Springs CBD about 6.45pm yesterday.
Police allege the offenders then kicked and punched the man, before arming themselves with bottles and throwing them at the guard.
He suffered a cut to his forehead.
Senior Sergeant Tennosaar said the men are in custody to be interviewed this morning.
Police are also calling for witnesses after two youths allegedly broke into the Alice Springs RSL overnight. Sen Sgt Tennosaar said the youths allegedly smashed through a pane of glass at the rear of the RSL, before stuffing bags with premixed cans of alcohol.
She said the two men were of indigenous appearance, possibly aged between 16 and 18.
"One was wearing a black hoodie with an emblem on the shoulder, maroon pants, and green runners," she said.

THE grandfather of former AFL player Liam Jurrah says his three-month jail sentence for the aggravated assault of a woman is not long enough.
Rex Granites Japanangka, 64, said his grandson's assault on a woman outside the 24-hour store had caused more conflict among already feuding Warlpiri families.


"He divided families with that fight," Mr Granites Japanangka said.


"He divided the Granites from the other mob."


Former Melbourne Demons player Jurrah was jailed for three months for pushing the woman twice and hitting her in the head in the early hours of March 28.


Alice Springs Magistrates Court was told the incident began after an argument between Jurrah's current partner and his previous partner.  The victim was not involved in the argument, but had allegedly smashed the rear window of a car.
Jurrah's sentence was backdated to April 27 to take into account the time he spent in custody.
Mr Granites Japanangka said his grandson received too light a sentence, like many other young Warlpiri men who were convicted of violent offences.
He said that because the punishment was light the young men usually reoffended when they were released.
"That is what is happening to our people," he said.
Warlpiri families from Yuendumu have been feuding since a 21-year-old man, Kwementyaye Watson, was fatally stabbed in Warlpiri camp, in Alice Springs in 2010.
His death sparked riots in Yuendumu, 290km northwest of Alice Springs.

AN ABORIGINAL justice group has called on the Licensing Commission to investigate a Katherine pub amid claims three Aboriginal men were beaten up there by bouncers in different incidents stretching back at least two years.
North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency chief executive Priscilla Collins said she was aware of the alleged incidents at Kirby's bar, which is part of the Katherine Hotel, two of which allegedly resulted in deaths.
Ms Collins yesterday called for the commission to take action.
"We are keen for them to actually investigate Kirby's, really to look into the excessive amount of alcohol that is being sold there, but also to see if these incidences are being reported and are actually getting followed up," Ms Collins said.
"They really need to train their staff on ensuring people aren't drinking excessive amounts of alcohol - and also train their staff on how to handle clients there."
In one incident in March, a middle-aged Aboriginal man was allegedly assaulted by a crowd controller and had his head stomped on, Ms Collins said.    The man later died and two bouncers at the pub were charged with manslaughter over the death of the 30-year-old father-of-six.
They are due to appear again in court next month.
In a separate incident in September last year, Eric Lewis died shortly after being released from a police lock-up in Katherine.
Ms Collins said there were allegations Mr Lewis had gone to Kirby's after his release and had been punched in the chest.
She is waiting to see the coroner's findings in relation to the death.
An earlier case relates to an alleged incident in 2011 in which two Aboriginal men were arguing at the back of the hotel when one man was allegedly grabbed by three different bouncers.
"One of the bouncers grabbed him by the collar and punched him a number of times, and then pushed him on to a table and started choking him - and continued punching him," Ms Collins alleged.
The Katherine Hotel was contacted for comment and further information but nobody was available to respond to the NAAJA allegations.



Sounds like they were playing up and violence was the only language they understand.

SEVENTY-SIX year old grandma Rachel Grainger has a message for the low-life who entered her home in broad daylight and stole her handbag: "We will get you next time."

Mrs Grainger lives in a Territory Housing estate for the elderly in Coconut Grove.
"They don't know who they are messing with now. Cranky old ladies and gents will get after them," she said.


The woman she thinks entered her home to steal her handbag about 8am while she was in the backyard had earlier been at her friend Jessie Lyons' home.

At the time the burglar had pretended she was selling tickets to watch the State of Origin match at SkyCity.

Mrs Grainger guessed things were amiss when she spoke to another friend in the estate who told her the same woman had pretended to be a nurse.
She had locked her door, but the thief poked a hole in a security screen.

John Preston, 77, who lives on the estate had called the police before the burglary occurred, after he saw the woman earlier in the day.
Mr Preston recognised the woman from a few months earlier when she had gone to the estate soliciting as a prostitute.
"I told her I wasn't interested," he said.
But Mrs Grainger, a Blues fan, had her faith in humanity restored after police who spoke to her called up SkyCity, which provided a VIP ticket for her to watch the match.
The police even passed the hat around and raised $50 so she could enjoy herself.
"I am thrilled that they did that. It was very nice of them," she said.
Although many of her cards and some cash were stolen from her, Mrs Grainger later had her handbag recovered after it was found nearby.

MEMBERS of Wadeye's notorious gangs feel forced into joining the groups because of family obligations, a new report has found.
An Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) report into youth gangs in Wadeye interviewed eight members who were in jail in Darwin and surveyed 133 young people from the community.
"Most interviewees noted that they didn't want to join a gang but had to due to kin obligation," the report says.


"The gang chose the individual rather than the individual choosing the gang."
Wadeye, an indigenous community about 400km south-west of Darwin, has a population of about 1600.
Gang violence is entrenched and last year hundreds of people roamed the town carrying axes, iron bars and other weapons.  A study in 2004 found there were 14 gangs operating, many of which are named after heavy metal bands such as Judas Priest, the Metallica Boys and the Megadeth Mob.
Some gangs had members aged only seven to 14, but more established gangs had members mainly aged from about 15 to 25.

One gang member quoted in the AIC report said Wadeye's gangs were in fact more like tribes.
"If you're born into it, you have to be in a gang to the old tribal stuff," the member said. "Gang leader means doing ceremony."
The report found the gangs had evolved in an environment of "substantial social and economic disadvantage".
It said the gangs may be considered a response to that environment as much as the cause of it.



Seems like it is entrenched in Aboriginal culture to be in a gang and be violent. These people don't have a place in our society and this behaviour can't be justified. If they have Bikie legislation in the works.. how about Aboriginal anti -gang legislation too?
