YOUNG people on Elcho Island are sniffing aviation fuel as they struggle to deal with the mental scars left by consecutive natural disasters, the island's top doctor has suggested.

Cyclone Lam smashed Elcho Island in February 2015, leaving hundreds homeless. Less than two months later, Cyclone Nathan hit.


Miwatj Health chief health officer Lucas de Toca said mental scars remained in the cyclone-ravaged community.
He said instances of volatile substance abuse had risen sharply in the past year. In the past few months, children have started breaking into the airstrip to siphon fuel from aeroplanes.
"It is not a coincidence this is happening in the aftermath of Elcho being hit by two cyclones," he said.

Aviation fuel contains lead, opening up its abusers to serious long term health impacts.
Although extra mental health workers provided help to residents in the aftermath of the disasters as part of the cyclone recovery effort, the storms had still taken a toll on the collective mental health of the community, Dr de Toca said.
"I think (the mental health effort) mitigated a lot of the after effects ... but there are some elements that cannot be completely mitigated," he said. He estimated about 100 young people on Elcho and nearby communities were sniffing aviation fuel, but said the behaviour had stopped since a security guard had been stationed at the Galiwinku airport at the beginning of May.
Dr de Toca said lead toxicity could have serious health impacts, and lead to behavioural and cognitive issues.

A WADEYE cop fired "several" warning shots into the sky when confronted by a large group of locals armed with weapons during escalating unruly behaviour to seize control of the situation.

Tensions have continued to rise in the community 400km south of Darwin after more than a week of violence.

It is believed the unrest was sparked by the release of a man from prison who was jailed for killing a rival clan member.

The drastic action taken by the officer came as another three cops were assaulted and two police cars were damaged by locals. Six arrests were made and the same officer who fired the warning shots was forced to discharge a canister of capsicum spray.

A 32-year-old man on bail for assaulting a police officer was rearrested after allegedly attacking another cop on Smith St on Wednesday night.

A police spokesman said it was one of two police assaults that night, the second was on an officer manning a bottle shop alone at Eastside in Alice Springs.

A 26-year-old male allegedly hit the officer with a plastic bag containing several glass bottles. The Alice Springs officer was taken to hospital for bruising and cuts to his head.

The attacks come after officers were assaulted with steel bars and rocks and threatened with spears in separate attacks in Wadeye last month.
Both of the alleged offenders were charged and appeared respectively at the Darwin and Alice Springs Local Courts on Thursday and were remanded in custody.
Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw said an assault on police, or anyone, was completely unacceptable.


"Violence should not be inflicted upon anyone in their workplace, least of all those who are there to protect and keep Territorians safe," Mr Kershaw said.NT Police Association president, Paul McCue said the reoffender showed there was a need for tougher penalties.

A "CRIMINAL" $2 bank transaction fee was enough to tip a mentally ill man over the edge (Abo).and stab a defenceless bank teller in the neck, the Northern Territory Supreme Court has heard.


John Anthony Calma, 34, has pleaded guilty to the October stabbing, which left a Commonwealth Bank staff member with a neck wound and ongoing psychological issues.


Marty Aust, for Calma, said his client wanted to withdraw "effectively his life savings" of $4.70 to buy some bread rolls when he was told the bank would have to deduct a standard $2 fee for an over-the-counter transaction.


"He was infuriated, he felt like he had been targeted," Mr Aust said.


The court heard an officer at the nearby Casuarina police station "giggled" at Calma when he went to complain about the fee, which he had a "genuine belief" was criminal.


The court heard Calma told police he decided to "deal with (the bank) in my own way".


Mr Aust said Calma routinely carried a knife "because he thinks people were out to get him" after years of run-ins with unscrupulous drug dealers.


"Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean people aren't out to get you," Mr Aust said.


Crown Prosecutor Tami Grealy said Calma was overheard saying "this is all your fault" as he walked out of the bank after the "particularly brazen" attack, which was caught on security camera.


Ms Grealy said Calma had shown a lack of remorse by maintaining "the reason for the offending is the bank fees".

A MAN has faced court for holding up a taxi driver with a syringe in Moil.Police allege the man charged with aggravated robbery, David Risk, was the driver's passenger from Karama to Moil at 2pm Thursday.

The 28-year-old threatened the driver with an empty syringe and demanded cash when he arrived at his destination.
Risk appeared briefly in Darwin Local Court this morning and did not apply for bail.
The barefooted Risk, who had a long black beard and wore an orange jumper and black board shorts was remanded in custody until his next court date on August 9.
Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Day said the taxi driver picked up the alleged offender.

"The offender has then threatened the driver with an empty syringe before making off with a small sum of cash," he said.
"Police attended and the offender was arrested on Termansen St by Strike Force Trident members with assistance from the Dog Operation Unit."

Ok ,so now they are ok with saying the crooks have "bare feet and black beards" but not black skin. Given the area it is in we know who did it.

A MAN who stomped and kicked his frail and drunk victim 51 times in 15 minutes near a Palmerston shopping centre has been jailed indefinitely.

Clifford Hughes, who was 28 when he brutally attacked his victim Bede Mulvein, 50 in February last year was given a nominal sentence of 14 years but may never be released.
Justice Stephen Southwood said the brutality of the "sustained and deliberate" attack at the Palmeston shopping Centre was captured on CCTV.
The court heard following the attack Hughes weaing blood soaked clothes caught a bus to Darwin and continued drinking until he returned to the Bagot Community.


"Bagot community" is a Boong community in the inner Darwin area, Ludmilla.
